Day 6: "Can you hear me?" / "I don't see you."
"You realize they're the most important people in the world, right?"
Kensuke said that about the Eva pilots. He envied them.
Toji didn't.
Part of him still felt guilty for how he had treated Shinji at first. The truth was, he had barely seen Shinji at all. All he saw was his sister in her hospital bed, and the stupid robot, and the monster who had started it all. He hadn't thought of Shinji as a person. He'd never considered how hard it must be to do what he did.
And now he was their friend. It was weird to think about, in light of Kensuke's observation. Shinji and Ayanami and Soryu, the heroes assigned to protect humanity. But Toji knew that they were just scared kids.
Kensuke saw them too, but he wouldn't listen to them. He had comforted Shinji in his fears, but he still wanted his burden.
Toji shook his head and looked away.
