Chapter VI

Rosalie drove her red convertible down the road, driving both her and Bella out of Forks and eventually into Port Angeles. They had gotten there so fast it seemed, that Bella was sure the blonde vampire had broken several traffic speeding laws. Once in Port Angeles, they drove for some time until eventually, Rosalie stopped her car, pulling into a parking space and parking. Looking around as Rosalie put the top back on her car, Bella noticed that they were in the parking lot of a restaurant that she didn't recognize, and a rather fancy one at that. Getting out of the car, she said, "Rosalie?"

"Come on, let's go eat," Rosalie said, beckoning the brunette to follow her.

Bella frowned in confusion at the vampire saying they were going to eat—vampires don't eat anything!—but followed her into the restaurant. They were greeted by the hostess and taken to a table to be seated. Once they were seated, Rosalie instantly ordered food and drinks for the both of them with the waiter that walked over, not giving Bella a chance to even consider what she was going to eat. After the waiter left, Bella mumbled, "I can order myself."

"I know," Rosalie replied. "But knowing you, you'll hesitate to order anything seeing the prices listed in the menu and we'll be here all day. Just accept it, okay?"

Silence followed Rosalie's words, Bella annoyed by what she said, though also knowing she was right. That was kind of funny, considering this was the one Cullen she never spent time with, the one that honestly didn't like her. She really didn't know why she didn't like her and was the only other person other than Edward that wanted her to stay human after the family vote. Rosalie was just so different from the others and she wasn't sure how to proceed with her. She wasn't friendly and open like Alice and Emmett, not warm and welcoming like Carlisle and Esme, she wasn't like Jasper in the way he was awkward, yet respectful, and she wasn't like Edward. She was an entire breed of her own, and Bella wasn't sure how to navigate her waters.

After another bit of silence, the waiter coming back to bring their drinks and telling them their food would be ready in another ten minutes, Bella shifted in her seat for a bit before saying, "Thank you. For saving me, I mean."

Rosalie waved her hand and said, "Don't worry about it. Can't believe it's the only way you wanted to be saved from my brother, but whatever. You're welcome. Besides, I figured you'd need help once I found out the jerk went to go talk to you about your baby."

Bella flushed a bit before clearing her throat. She took a sip of her water before asking, "How um…how do you know I'm…how'd you find out?"

"Alice. She had a vision and started freaking out about you holding a newborn in a hospital bed."

"That freaked her out?"

"Well, not that per se, but rather who the child resembled. You know, a certain tall, dark, and sexy whose last name is the color of Edward's soul."

Rosalie had said that with such a straight face and bored tone, Bella couldn't help but laugh a little, though she was blushing from her statement. She didn't want to think it, because she was still with Edward and Jacob was her best friend overall, but Jacob really was tall, dark, and handsome. And he was sexy too, she supposed. Not suppose, he is, her mind couldn't help but supply.

They were silent once again, and still silent when their food eventually arrived. Bella looked down at her plate of salmon and broccoli before looking up at Rosalie. Her chocolate brown eyes nearly popped out of her head seeing the blonde stick a forkful of chicken marsala into her mouth and chew it, even swallowing it. Blinking in surprise, she couldn't help but say stupidly, "You just ate food."

The blonde raised an eyebrow at her. "I know."

"But…" Bella lowered her voice. "Vampires don't eat."

"Is that what Edward told you?"

At her nod, Rosalie rolled her eyes. "Technically no, we don't. Real food doesn't sustain us, therefore there is no reason to eat it when it does absolutely nothing for us. I'm sure he also mentioned that real food tastes like ash or something along those lines in our mouths, which is not true. It tastes like what it's supposed to taste like, just stale and…flat."

"So, like, little to no taste?"

"Yeah, that's another way of putting it."

Surprised yet fascinated with that knowledge, Bella began to eat her own meal, loving the wonderful sear on her salmon. As she took her second bite, Rosalie shocked her with what she said next.

"So, tell me how you got pregnant," Rosalie said casually.

The brunette chocked a bit on her food and coughed, not having expected that. Taking a sip of her water, her eyes watering a bit, she caught her breath before saying, "Um, you know how I got pregnant, Rosalie."

The blonde nodded and replied, "That's true, that's a no brainer. Well then, how do you feel?"

"I feel fine."

"That's not what I mean, and you know it."

Bella looked at her before looking down into her plate of food. Sighing, she set down her fork and said, "I don't know, honestly. I'm pregnant, Rose. This is still a lot to take in. And…and I don't know what I'm going to do now."

Rosalie regarded her for a moment. "Don't tell me you're still thinking about what my brother thinks, thus prohibiting you from figuring out what to do or what you want."

"I can't help it, Rosalie. I've betrayed Edward by being unfaithful with Jacob, so it is understandable why he's angry about this. But I still can't believe that he tried to dazzle me into getting rid of the baby before I could make a comprehensive decision."

"First of all, fuck him. One thing Edward has never truly been is smart, and that's because he's still stuck in a teenage body with teenage thoughts, despite all the decades he's lived through. He can't be angry with you for being "unfaithful" when you technically weren't, especially since he's the one who broke up with you."

"But he lied about that; he never meant it."

"Doesn't matter. He broke things off and pretty much told you to move on. No one expected you to continue to stay faithful to that whack job, and it's stupid for him to be upset about something that has absolutely nothing to do with him. Secondly, any decisions concerning your baby should only be up for you and Jacob Black to decide. You two need to talk anyway about the baby and do it without tense emotions and interruption. If Edward is trying to call shots and they're not in the best interest of your baby, you need to step away, far away. In fact, you should have run from the beginning with his controlling tendencies, but I also didn't say you were smart either."

"Okay, can you stop taking jabs at me? I know you don't like me, but that's no reason to be mean."

Rosalie pursed her lips as she stared at the brunette, amused by her annoyed expression. Deciding to lay off, she nodded and instead asked, "How do you feel about kids? What do you think about having them and being a parent, especially now that you're expecting?"

Bella thought for a moment before answering, "I've never really thought about it. Having a baby wasn't something that I saw for myself in my future, especially being with Edward. That's why this whole situation is so overwhelming for me. Everything is changing, and it freaks me out. A baby is something that is so small yet will cause such huge shifts. I don't know what to do. What do you think I should do, Rosalie?"

"I can't answer that for you, Bella. That's something you're going to have to figure out on your own. But I know what I would do if it were me."

A melancholy expression came over Rosalie's face, making Bella frown in confusion. Seeing such a sad look on the blonde's face was…odd. And yet, she could tell that sadness was coming from somewhere deep, somewhere real. Knowing it was something probably deeply personal, Bella knew not to ask. And yet, she couldn't help herself. Opening her mouth, she asked, "What's wrong?"

Giving her a pained smile, Rosalie answered softly, "It's just that you are experiencing something that I wish I could have. But being what I am, that chance was taken from me the moment Carlisle sunk his teeth in. I would give anything to have a baby of my own, to be a mother of a child that I can raise and love me like I would love them. It's because of that reason that I'm always happy for new and expecting mothers, but it also makes me sad because I know it will never be me, and angry when said expecting mothers get rid of their baby, not understanding the amazing gift that they have."

Taking a deep, shaky breath, Rosalie shook her head again as if to shake away the sad mood. Looking back at the brunette, she continued speaking. "I'm not saying this to guilt you or anything Bella, but I want you to at least consider the wonderful blessing and opportunity that you have now."

Bella stared at her for a moment before looking back down at the table, no longer feeling hungry and willing to eat. It became obvious that neither of them was going to finish eating, both having barely eaten their food. Standing, Rosalie placed more than enough money on the table to pay for their pretty much uneaten meals and tip for the waiter, and left the restaurant, Bella following behind her. Exiting the building, they walked back to Rosalie's parked car. As they did, Bella couldn't help but think about what the blonde vampire had said to her. Particularly, she couldn't stop thinking about the face she had made when talking about never having children of her own; it was so heartbreaking.

Climbing back into the convertible, Rosalie told her that she would take her home now. Starting the car, Rosalie pulled out of the parking lot and the two of them were leaving Port Angeles and heading back to Forks. The ride back was silent, not even the radio was playing, thus it left Bella to her thoughts. Halfway to Forks, Bella soon realized that she didn't want to return home, knowing good and well Edward was probably still there in her room. Not only that, but he was probably going to attempt to dazzle her about the baby again, something she still couldn't believe had happened. She wouldn't have room to breathe the moment she stepped foot back into her home, into her bedroom. She still needed to think, not ready for a confrontation from the vampire that she called her boyfriend.

Knowing the one place she would be safe to be and think on her own, Bella turned to the blonde and asked her to drop her off in La Push. She understood she wouldn't be able to drop her off inside La Push, the treaty line acting as a border to where Rosalie could not cross. Rosalie glanced at the brunette before a small smile appeared on her lips. Nodding, she headed in the direction of the Reservation, obviously happy with her choice in location to be taken to.

It seemed like just minutes later when Rosalie slowed down to a halt. Putting the car in park, Rosalie said, "Alright Bella, we're here. I can't go any further because of the treaty, but I trust you got it from here."

"Yeah, I got it from here," Bella replied. "Thanks for bringing me."

"No problem. Well, I'll see you whenever. Good luck, Bella." With that, Rosalie put the red convertible in reverse, turning around and speeding off in her car.

Bella watched her go for a moment before turning and walking along the road, breathing in the fresh, earthy scent that La Push seemed to be made up of. It was a scent she absolutely loved because it calmed her mind. That, and being in La Push, even when he wasn't around, made her feel closer to Jacob. She walked all the way from her starting point to First Beach, the smell of the ocean hitting her before she even saw it. Walking on the sand, she made her way to the old, washed up log that she and Jacob called 'their spot' and sat down, a sigh escaping her lips. Once she was seated, she looked out at the ocean for a bit, her mind wandering back to the last time she had been here.

It had been the day she had stupidly jumped off the cliff, nearly drowning and Victoria catching her. She could have died that day—either by drowning or Victoria—but Jacob had saved her, and she would always be grateful for that. Jacob had then taken her back to his home, gotten her a change of clothes, and despite his anger at her for jumping without him, he had been glad she was alright. She remembered distinctly that she wanted him to not be upset with her any longer, thus prompting him to kiss her. He had even questioned her feelings for him, believing they weren't the same as his, yet she told him that they were. And it wasn't a lie, she had meant it. Her feelings for Jacob were the same, and it led to them making love. Of course, Alice's return and then her running off to Italy to save Edward, only to return with them back together as a couple again, it isn't any wonder Jacob believed she had used him. Honestly, who professes their feelings and has sex with someone one moment, then turn around and get back with the person that broke their heart the next? Apparently her, it would seem.

Sighing, she leant forward and placed her face in her hands, her elbows resting on her knees. How did her life get so out of control? It's never been in your control since you got involved with those vampires, her conscience supplied as an answer.

The brunette shook her head from that thought, though it didn't fully go away. It wasn't like her mind was wrong. Ever since she had met Edward and let him and his family surround her life, her life had never really been in control. It would explain why she so easily fell apart when they had left, because she needed them to stay afloat, to help move her around like some sort of marionette. God, that sounded so wrong, even to her, and yet that was how she had acted. But now Edward and his family were back, she was in full control, and she was happy again. At least, she thought she was.

Honestly, she thought she would have been more ecstatic, completely happy now that Edward was back with her again—she should be—but she wasn't. It was all she had wanted for all those months, to have him back with her in her life, yet she wasn't all that happy. Bella then realized that it was because of Jacob that she wasn't completely happy again. She wasn't blaming him, for he had done nothing wrong. No, she realized that she wasn't completely happy with Edward being back was because Jacob had made her happy during his absence, really happy, and they had gotten so much closer during that time. It wasn't really a surprise that her feelings had changed during that time, but she should have acknowledged and appreciated the happiness Jacob brought her. He kept her head above water the whole time, even if she felt like she was still drowning in her sorrow over Edward's absence. But now with everything that has happened, underneath all the crazy events, she had hurt Jacob. She had hurt Jacob badly and she wasn't sure she would be able to fix it. It had been hard enough trying to talk before after coming back from Italy. And now a baby was involved in the mess that she called her life, Jacob's baby. Oh, she just wished she knew what to do.

Closing her eyes, she thought about what Rosalie had said to her at the restaurant. Rosalie had said that she should talk with Jacob without interruption and tense emotions involved. That seemed like a tall order concerning all that had been said and not, as well as Edward always being around. But being on the wolves' side of the treaty line, Edward couldn't stop them from talking. As far as tense emotions, she was sure her and Jacob could manage that somehow. She also thought about the blonde's little speech about not being able to experience motherhood, how that seemed to be her ultimate wish, something she wanted and couldn't obtain. Rosalie had seemed to sad and her heart went out to her. Not being able to help herself, she placed her hand over her stomach where her baby was residing, thinking on how Rosalie had said she was experiencing a blessing she could only wish to have. Not only that, she also thought of her mentioning Alice's vision of her holding the baby. It seemed so surreal…

Taking her hand off her stomach, Bella stood up from the log and turned to leave the beach. Walking towards the road, Bella decided to trek to the Black household. She had made a decision, not a full one, but one that she knew she could do. Though she still didn't fully know what she should do, she did know that the next step was to talk to Jacob. No one else needed to be involved either; no Charlie, no Billy, no Edward. No one, just Jake and Bells. As she thought that, a small smile slipped onto her face, her heart warming as she did. And as the little red house eventually came into view, Bella knew that despite everything that has happened, she and Jacob will work something out; she just knew it.
