A Hunter's Tale Part 6
Disclaimer: See Part 1
It was official the Supernatural curse of nothing going right had taken effect. As Jo and I sat having a nice dinner and I was just about to answer her question about how I got into the life when everything went to hell.
A man walked right up to our table and it was a man I knew thanks to Chuck.
"Daniel."
"Joseph."
I looked him up and down. "What brings you out?" I asked what would bring the former Grigori out of his imposed exile.
"I have heard tales of an Angel walking the Earth."
Jo looked at Daniel like he was nuts.
"That is passing odd but what makes it so special that you came to find me?" I asked taking a bite of my dinner so I wouldn't have to answer the question I was sure was on Jo's mind.
Daniel looked as if he was going to wet himself he was excited and at the same time scared.
"It's the Archangel Gabriel." He told us in a near whisper.
I dropped my fork.
"There is an Archangel walking the planet." I asked putting a little bit of fear in my voice.
"And he may come looking for you." Daniel told us.
"Why would an Archangel come looking for him? Jo asked unsure what she just heard.
Daniel looked at me and I gave him a small nod.
"When we first met Joseph stopped me from making a very bad choice. He also showed me there was more to life on earth then I ever thought. I decided to learn what this world had to teach me and I gave me Sword to Joseph and passed to him my Grace. The Source of my Angelic Powers. Gabriel may come looking for him because my Grace is one of a very small number of Graces on the Planet. Gabriel wouldn't be able to sense me as a human but my Grace he can most definitely find. And if he finds you and not me … "He trailed off.
"He might be highly pissed at finding a Human with Angel Grace instead of the Brother he was expecting to find?" I answered for him.
"More or less. Which is why I came to warn you."
"Thanks for the warning Daniel" I told him truthfully.
Daniel gave a small smile and left the table.
"Boy this sure turned the mood of this date in a hurry." I told Jo as she gave me a look that told me I damn well better start explaining what the hell was going on.
"We'll talk somewhere private after dinner. I will explain everything.
….
After Dinner I drove us back to the Roadhouse. Jo practically dragged me into the back.
"Ok Glasses I will take those answers now." Jo told me with a firm voice that had me wanted to make sure my nuts were protected because he tone suggested they would be in my throat the moment she got an answer she didn't believe.
I took a breath and began to explain.
"I was in school studying to be a police officer. In one of my classes I was assigned a research project about Mass Murder in the United States. I was doing a study of Guys like Charles Whitman, Colin Ferguson, James Huberty, and Brenda Spencer. The Pre-Columbine Mass Shooters type of people. While I was investigating those cases and others I found something."
"What did you find?" Jo asked.
"A man. In the Background of multiple pictures different years different states but always the same man."
"The same man you're sure?" Jo asked,
"Yep exactly the same in every picture. You see this man was a Grigori a Fallen Angel that was stealing Souls to try and create some kind of Power Source. He was stealing souls of people who died before their time. And he was doing by creating Mass Casualty Incidents. "
Jo looked at me funny.
"He would find unstable people and somehow push them into doing something worse than they had planned. Like Whitman instead of just killing himself and his wife he was made to think it would be better to climb a clock tower and wipeout anyone moving." Seeing the horror in Jo's eyes I could see she understood what I was getting at.
"So because of this Grigori instead of this people only killing one or two people as they intended to they went on spree's that killed a lot more people and each time some died before their appointed time he was able to capture their souls and was using it to be a power source for a spell."
"A spell for what?" Jo asked.
"From what Daniel told me later a spell to force the Gates of Heaven opened and allow the Fallen Grigori back into Heaven."
"So what would happen if they got back into Heaven?" Jo asked.
"My guess a war between Angels. A grudge match for the ages and who know how that would affect us on Earth."
Jo stood up walked to nearest cabinet and pulled out a bottle and a pair of glasses. Sitting back down she poured us both a drink.
"So you're former Angel friend. He gave you his what did you call it Grace?"
I nodded. It's the Holy Energy that gives Angels their powers. As far as I know I'm just the container for it. All it does it keeps me from ending up as Someone's meat suit from either Above or Below. The only other thing it does it let me do this." I focused a second and pulled Daniel's Angel Sword from behind my back.
"The Sword is linked to the Grace and I can summon it from anywhere. And the damn thing will kill almost anything I've come across as long as I can get close enough to use it. So it's my weapon of last resort."
Jo looked at me like I had two heads.
"Why last resort why not use that thing to put a hurt on all the evil sons of bitches that are out there?" Her rage over her father's dead coming to the surface for a minute there.
"Because you don't want the Rep of being the Unstoppable Bad Ass who can kill anything following you around. Things would start targeting you just to prove you're all hype or that they are better or they want the weapons you have. If you want to survive as a Hunter you've got to be as low key as possible to be under the Radar. "
Jo took a pull on her drink.
"Under the Radar? That's how you work?"
I gave her a smile.
"Jo all my Businesses are geared towards Hunting in some way or another but all so supplying a cover for everything we do as Hunters."
"How so?" She asked.
"What businesses do I have? First I am a private investigator. I have a Government License that I can show to people that they can check up on and let me have a reason for asking Questions of people all over town as well as speaking to the cops. And unlike those Hunters that pose as Feds or Priests or the like I don't have to worry about someone checking up on me because I am exactly who I appear to be. Second I have an Antique Business. I have a functioning website and I have people that work for me buying and selling Antiques all over the Country and the company has a rep for dealing in esoteric items, haunted items, weird stuff that most people are glad to be rid of or willing to pay through the nose for. It lets me gather Intel and supplies that most Hunters can't get. And lastly I have a Federal Gun Dealer's license I buy and sell guns all over the Country. I help Hunters that need specialize hardware or something untraceable for a Job or just need a supply. Hell every Office my companies have are all Hunter Stash Houses."
Jo nodded her head as she thought about what I was telling her.
"Ok let's say I buy what you're selling about that what are you going to do about this Angel if he comes for you?"
I smiled.
"I have supplies that will help me with that."
"Supplies?" Jo asked not believing what I was saying.
"I have a supplier that gets a special kind of Oil. Holy Oil it when used properly will allow me to contain an Angel. I have books on different glyphs that allow me to banish an Angel or even for them from their Meat Suit. I am ready for these Guys I have been ever since I met Daniel. Now I just have to keep my eyes open for the signs that something is up."
Jo took a sip of her drink.
"What would you say if I was interested in joining up with you?" Jo asked.
"I'd say will your Mother kill me if I say yes?"
Jo snorted into her drink.
"Jo tonight however our date went I was going to offer you a Job I am opening an Office Nearby for my Detective Agency which as you now know is also a Hunter Store House. Why don't you take the Job show your Mom that you can handle both sides of the Hunter business? And then if you want I will gladly take you on as a Partner."
"So I would getting paid for this Job?" Jo asked.
"Full pay and benefits. Pull first choice of any of the Hunter Supplies, Weapons and Lore Books you want. You could fully outfit yourself out if you wanted."
"Sounds nice." Jo smiled as she leaned in close to me.
"I take care of my people Jo."
"Oh am I one of your people?" She asked with a smirk.
"I'd like you to be."
Anything else I was going to say was cut off as Jo kissed me.
And the only thought that ran through my head was please Chuck don't let Ellen walk in here right now.
…
The next Morning Ellen came into the Kitchen and found me cooking Breakfast for Jo as I talked to her about the Job I had offered.
Ellen took a seat a listened as I explained my set up to Jo what she would be responsible for in the Office and I was even suggesting a few Courses she could take on-line that coupled with her former College attempt could see her getting a degree in a short time.
Ellen brighten up as she heard that and I served up some Coffee and Toast to her while I made her an omelet.
"So I guess she is going to be taking your job offer?" Ellen asked.
"I made the offer Ms. Harvelle and Jo was interested." I offered.
Ellen nodded.
"And what made you decide to cook breakfast this morning?" she asked nicely.
"It was the least I could do I got the pleasure of your daughter's company for a nice dinner. And you let me sleep her last night and trusted me enough to do so knowing your daughter and I have started dating. I was something nice I could do for you both." I smiled.
Jo smirked as I slid two Denver Omelets with Hash browns and bacon in front of them.
"Please Ladies enjoy."
Ellen took a bit off the offered food.
Then turned to Jo. "If you don't take him I will just so he keeps cooking for us."
Jo laughed then dug into her own omelet with gusto.
…
After Breakfast Ellen allowed me and Jo to have a Moment to say goodbye as I had a meeting with the Realtor for the location of my new office and had to get moving.
A nice kiss later and a sound I was sure was a shotgun being racked and I was heading for the door to keep my meeting.
As I drove I couldn't help but get a feeling in my stomach that a case was going to be coming right at me since I had prevented the pilot of Supernatural from happening the way that it originally was going too.
As I pulled up to the building I hoped to turn into my office I was met at the curb by the Realtor the guy looked familiar to me and it was nagging at me.
I parked and we walked into the building.
And that's when it hit me the Realtor looked like Jim Varney and I had to winch. The Actor who played Gabriel one of his early roles was a Camper in Ernest Goes to Camp.
I turned to him and looked him in the eye.
"So did are you going to kill me Gabriel?" I asked.
The Realtor morphed into the Archangel I knew oh so well.
"That all depends on you Hoss. I've got some questions I want answered and if you want to live past the next few minutes I damn well better like the answers you give me." He threatened as his Archangel Blade appeared in his hand.
"Well shit."
This day was not going to go as I planned at all.
