Sunlight almost blinded Bakugo as he slowly regained consciousness. A sore feeling spread throughout his entire body, realizing he was still alive. As his vision came into focus, everything came flooding back.
"Help me... Kacchan..."
Bakugo jolted upright, causing pain to shoot up his torso and broken arm. His torso was wrapped in bandages, and his broken arm was in a cast and sling.
Looking around the room, Bakugo recognized it as their Common Space, but he almost didn't. The Lounge Area was partly destroyed, and there was rubble and debris everywhere.
A few of his classmates were bandaged up and taking care of each other. Luckily, Recovery Girl was there to heal everyone as much as she could.
Kaminari had it the worst; a lot of bad burns and bruises along with a mild concussion from the explosion. Iida had a few burns and a broken leg, including his engine, which got damaged from falling debris. Minoru Mineta and Yuga Aoyama both had pretty bad burns and bruises, and Aoyama had a broken arm. And Koji Kouda had a few mild burns and bruises. Luckily, Kirishima had his quirk to protect him, and everyone else was okay.
There was an itch in the back of his head once he saw Uraraka with no injuries, but he couldn't pinpoint why it was bothering him. It didn't seem too important since she was okay, so he tried to forget about it. But so many other feelings took control.
Guilt and regret ran through Bakugo's veins, making it almost impossible to repress them.
This is... my fault...
"Bakugo, you're awake!" Kirishima cried as he rushed over to his side as other classmates followed his lead, "Don't move around too much. You were hurt pretty badly."
Bakugo started to sway a bit, but Kirishima helped him sit up on the couch. He was too ashamed to look at anyone or anything, so he kept his face hidden.
They all looked devestated and exhausted, but Bakugo knew more than everyone else. He knew why All for One took Deku, and everything was going to change if they didn't do something about it.
The presence in the destroyed room was eating away at them.
"Where's Mr. Aizawa?" Bakugo asked, trying to think of something else.
"Well, something happened with Eri and the League of Villains, so he went to go check on her," Uraraka informed him with concern, "But from what we know, it seems that Toga might've used her quirk to disguise herself as Mr. Aizawa."
In an instant, All for One's sudden new appearance made sense. Bakugo felt his chest begin to collapse. He lost control of himself for a second, and almost jumped off the couch.
"Bakugo, what is it?" Todoroki asked, "You look like you've seen a ghost."
Trying to compose himself, he forced out what was on his mind.
"All for One. He looked different, as if he were a completely different person. As if..."
Everyone was now just as pale as him, and they understood. Uraraka covered her mouth with her hands, absolutely horrified.
"Bakugo, why did All for One capture Deku? Did that monster tell you anything? Anything at all?"
He gritted his teeth, unsure of what to say. With Deku captured, Bakugo thought that they should know the truth, but he wasn't going to do so without talking to AllMight about it first.
"I can't say anything til I talk to AllMight," he told everyone, "Where is he?"
"Are you sure you can't tell us just a teensy bit of info? This is kind of important," Kaminari asked after being healed somewhat by Recovery Girl.
Seeing his leftover burns and bruises almost got him to slip, but caught himself by biting his lip.
"I made a damn promise, and I have to see it through!" Bakugo yelled as he stood up a little too quickly.
He almost hit the floor, but Kirishima caught him just in time.
"You okay, man? You shouldn't be moving around too much," he reminded him, and then answered his question, knowing full well they weren't going to get anywhere until they talk, "He went up to Midoriya's room."
It only took Bakugo three minutes to walk to the elevator and down the hallway to where Deku's room was, but it felt like an eternity had passed. As he got closer, he noticed that the door to his room was blown off the hinges and in pieces. The wall that the door was connected to was pretty much a goner as well.
Standing by the doorway, gazing at what was left of the room was AllMight. The look in his eyes almost made him stop in his tracks and leave. He had to talk to him though.
I have to do this. All of this is my fault after all.
Bakugo forced his feet to keep going, and AllMight saw him in the corner of his sunken eye. The aura between the two of them was full of so much guilt and regret that you could cut it with a knife. Bakugo stood next to him, looking at the room where All for One forced him to use his quirk and ruined everything.
There were burnt pieces of AllMight merchandise everywhere. He always picked on Deku for having so many collectibles of The Symbol of Peace. But now seeing it all destroyed, added another layer of regret onto Bakugo's shoulders.
"How's your arm?" AllMight asked him, breaking the dead silence.
It hurts like hell.
"It's okay. Not a big deal," Bakugo muttered as he rubbed his cast.
As the silence prolonged, Bakugo felt his frustration grow with every second that passed.
"Young Bakugo, I'm so sorry I put all of this on you. None of this is your fault."
Why is he apologizing?...It is my fault...I broke my promise...I couldn't protect that damn nerd...I'm no hero...Deku saved me from that five fingered freak, but I didn't do anything...
Everything he's gone through since entering U.A., to standing here with AllMight himself, all of his mistakes and losses, guilt and regret kept piling up. And more than anything, a memory of kid Deku reaching out to help him when he fell into a stream of water made him realize Deku's true intentions.
"Help me... Kacchan..."
He felt himself implode and collapsed onto the floor.
"Young Bakugo, are you-"
"W-what have I done?!" Bakugo cried, "It's all my damn fault!"
He couldn't control anything anymore and hot tears streamed down his face. Memories from the past to the present just kept coming and making everything worse.
All of this frustration he'd been feeling this whole time was towards himself and no one else. He wanted to prove to AllMight that he can win and defeat the villain just like him. But the promise he made, finally got him to see a different side of being a hero, and how much work it is to save someone. To protect someone.
"I'm so sorry, AllMight! I wasn't able to protect him... to save him... He forced me to use my quirk! Everything happened so fast, I practically helped him! H-he... he took Deku... One for All! Whatever happens next... is because of me! I'm worthless... All these years... I was such a jerk, and now I'll never be able to apologize to him!"
AllMight kneeled down by his side, placing a weak hand on his upper back for support. He didn't say a thing. Bakugo couldn't stop, tears just kept coming. He kept crying out, dammit! over and over again, but eventually his sobbing stopped him from doing so.
AllMight could feel his emotions getting the better of him, but he held them in for Bakugo's sake. His body was shaking a little in response to his breakdown. He closed his eyes and let him have a good cry.
Minutes passed and tears stopped running down Bakugo's face. His chest felt heavy as he took deep breaths in and out. All he could hear was his heartbeat pounding in his ears. He just sat there, staring at the floor through puffy eyes.
"What are we going to do?" Bakugo asked without thinking.
Seconds turned into minutes as he sat there waiting for an answer. He felt himself doze off, almost missing AllMight's response.
"I have no choice. I have to tell your class the truth about All for One and One for All. Then... we save Young Midoriya."
This chapter was a tough one to write. I really wanted to go from Bakugo to Midoriya for this chapter, but decided it'd be best to separate them into different chapters. So, the next chapter will be Midoriya's. I hope Bakugo's breakdown turned out good!
