CHAPTER FIVE

Dean POV

I scanned the tablet screen, biting into my burger. Sam wandered in, grabbing a beer from the fridge.

"Hey," I greeted.

"Hey," Sam responded, taking a seat across from me. "Got anything?"

"Maybe..." I slid the tablet across the table. "Beaverdale, Iowa... more than a half dozen cattle mutilations in the last month."

"Could be nothing," Sam sipped his drink.

"Or could be our type of thing," I countered.

Sam hummed a noncommittal response, sliding the tablet back over. I opened my mouth to say something else when Cass appeared in the doorway along with a young girl I didn't recognize. She had long brown hair and piercing blue-green eyes behind a pair of red wire rimmed glasses that were red and puffy like she had been crying. She wore faded blue jeans and a light pink blouse with dark pink and blue flowers adorning it and a pair of heeled leather ankle boots.

"Cass? What's going on?"

"This is Isabelle. She needs somewhere to stay for a while. Her mother was killed by demons."

I noticed Isabelle was holding onto Cass's hand like a lifeline.

"Well, we have plenty of extra rooms. I'm sure something can be arranged," I responded.

Cass looked to the young woman, muttering something softly in her ear. I narrowed my eyes as he gave her hand a small squeeze and let go. She turned and walked off, leaving Cass alone with us.

"What the Hell, man? Why bring her here?"

"I was given very specific instructions by her mother."

"Which were what?"

"To bring her to her father."

Silence fell on the room as Sam and I stared at Cass. I was standing now, food and potential case forgotten as Cass's words sank in.

"Her father?"

"Yes, Dean, her father. You."

Sam made a sound like he was laughing but covered it with a cough.

"Dean has a kid?"

Cass nodded once at Sam's question, eyes never leaving mine.

"You said demons got her mom?" I questioned him.

"Unfortunately, yes. They haven't shown up since Isabelle was born. I suppose since her 18th birthday is in a few months they decided to try again."

"Her 18th... They were after her?"

"Yes they were. She was at school and so they had to settle for her mother."

"Who is... was her mother?"

"Lyla Griffin."

"Lyla... oh..."

I had a vague memory from November of 2000. A poltergeist. Lyla had been caught in the crossfire, but I managed to save her. One thing led to another. And then I skipped town like usual. I never thought about it again. But apparently Lyla had been left with a permanent reminder of that night...

"When's Isabelle's birthday?"

"August 28, 2001."

"I need some air."

"Dean-"

I ignored Cass, pushing past him and heading to the garage, grabbing the keys to Baby as I went.
