As the train came to a stop, we exited and were met by the cold night air. I walked beside Harry and was followed by Tori and Lia chit-chatting. A familiar voice called and it was Hagrid!
"Firs'-Years! Firs'-years, over here!" Hagrid called holding his lamp.
"Hey, Hagrid!" Me and Harry greeted him with a big smile.
Tori held my hand and smiled, I shriveled and gave a small smile back awkwardly to not be rude. I noticed on her other hand was Lia. When the lot moved, Harry got further away from me, I was uncomfortable with that but still stayed with the two girls to give socializing with others a chance.
After a bit of walking, and continuous talking from Tori about muggles with a hint of inaccuracy which I didn't bother correcting, we arrived at a black lake. Across the lake was our beautiful school that took off my worries about being separated from Harry for too long.
"No more'n four to a boat," Hagrid called and pointed to a fleet of boats in the water by the shore of a black lake in front of us.
Tori finally let go of my hand to run off to see Hogwarts better. Harry was still out of sight. I entered the boat and out of nowhere, Larissa joined Ophelia, Victoria and my boat.
"Hey, mind if I join you?" she asked while gesturing at the empty seat beside Lia in the middle. Lia nodded and patted the wood and smiled.
"No! Not at all!" Tori exclaimed and looked back from the front seat to meet her eyes.
While we travelled across the lake, the other three with me were talking to each other. I try to stay out of the conversation. I wonder around to see any sign of Harry, again, no sign.
"Finding something, or someone?" Larissa looked back and I turned my head to focus on her.
"Oh- er- just finding Harry."
"You guys are close, huh." Lia turned too, they helped search for him.
Before I could say anything else, Tori pointed at Harry, Ron, Hermione and Neville's boat. We were close to shore but Harry's boat was already going down one by one.
When I got down from the boat, Harry was already lost in the crowd of students.
"Hey, do you mind me leaving you guys, I need to find Harry." I was tapping my feet impatiently while I talked to my companions.
"Yeah, sure!" Tori smiled and they all waved, for a quick moment, I thought Larissa huffed.
I quickly climbed the stone steps with the group of students trying to navigate and just find him already. I finally saw Harry at the oak door at the castle that I only noticed now.
"Harry," I sat down and caught my breath for a moment.
"Where have you been?"
"It's ok I'm here now, lets go?" he grabbed my shoulder and stood me up. I gave him a nod and spotted Hermione, Ron and Neville on Harry's right and waved.
"Everyone here? You there, still got your toad?" Hagrid looked at Neville, now with his toad. Then he raised his gigantic fist and knocked on the castle door.
The door swung open. A tall black-haired witch in emerald robes stood, she seemed very strict.
"The firs'-years, Professor McGonagall."
"Thank you, Hagrid. I'll take them from here." She pulled the door wide and revealed the big entrance hall. When we entered it following Professor McGonagall, I spun around slowly to take a better look of our surroundings. Harry smiled at me. While spinning, I saw Lia and Tori behind us looking as amazed as I am. I heard people talking behind another door, the others were already there, we went past the door and arrived in a chamber off the hall. The two girls I met on the train and Ron got beside me.
My right hand touched his hand accidentally and I jumped, we both turned very red. He jolted forward and went beside Harry who was in front of me. I heard a little giggle from Tori and Lia on my left, I simply rolled my eyes.
Professor McGonagall gave a speech about the school houses and the sorting ceremony, I gulped.
"The Sorting Ceremony will take place in a few minutes in front of the rest of the school. I suggest you all smarten yourselves up as much as you can while you are waiting."
Her eyes lingered to Neville and Ron. I tried to fix my fringe, I saw Tori brushing her hair and Lia fixing her messy bun.
Harry and Ron backed up to us. Harry was surprised when his and Lia's both green eyes met. I sighed and asked Ron,
"How exactly do they sort us into Houses?"
"Some sort of test, I think. Fred said it hurts a lot, but I think he was joking." he answered while scratching the back of his ear
My eyes widened and I saw Harry frightened too
"Pssh," Lia huffed, glancing at Ron. I bet she's saying in her mind It's much worse than that.
"What, why?" Tori asked and gave a gulp.
"Nothing, let's just wait for the ceremony."
"Hey, red-head!" both Lia and Ron immediately jerked around. A boy was referring to Ophelia, he 'just wanted to say she was beautiful'.
Lia gave the random boy an awkward smile and half of the boys turned red, one of which is Harry. I elbowed him and looked at him funny. What did I just- he mouthed and stared to his front. (regretting his life decisions, I expect)
"Got a taste on red-heads, huh?" I got on my tiptoes so I can reach Harry's ear.
"You too! I saw you and Ron touch hands, then both of you were flushed."
Harry accidentally shouted, now everyone around looked at us, including Ron. My embarrassment was easily seen through my red face. I caught a glance of Ron and he was blushing deeply too.
Then all of the girls started screeching, thank them for taking our spotlight.
GHOSTS! Ghosts came to greet us and hoped Harry and I would go to their houses when they were alive.
Professor McGonagall arrived and made us form a line. I was behind Ron who was behind Harry, I was followed by Ophelia and Victoria.
We entered the Great Hall and it was A-MA-ZING. There were candles floating above 4 tables covered by golden plates and goblets. These tables were filled with students, but I'm sure some more students could fit. I also noticed the absent ceiling, instead I saw the night sky, I read about that somewhere.
I just thought, the ceremony is close, each breath I had was a heavy one. I was interrupted by the annoying Hermione's loud whisper.
"It's bewitched to look like the sky outside. I read about it in Hogwarts: A History."
"Oh, shut up."
Oh no, did I say that out loud?
I did.
I only want her to stop talking. After all these years having Harry close to me, it was a force of habit whispering my opinions.
She huffed at me and pace walked away.
"That was kinda mean." Lia grabbed my shoulder and whispered.
"I know, sorry." I watched my feet walk so I could have my head down.
She nodded and looked around.
Professor McGonagall places a stool and a dirty wizard's hat.
After the TALKING hat sang it's song about the different houses,
It's time.
After she stated the other first year's names to be sorted it came to,
"Emerson, Victoria." She called
I paid attention when she sat down on the stool.
"Hmm, I know HUFFLEPUFF!" the Hat shouted. The Hufflepuff table of black and yellow cheered, I caught a glimpse of the Gryffindor table, one of the Weasley twins was cheering, he signaled his twin to clap for Tori too.
She sat beside a (I admit) handsome fourth year with dark hair. She immediately started to talk to him. He was nice about it and listened to her chats. All the girls from the Slytherin to Gryffindor tables looked at her like they seemed to despise her.
Hermione and Neville were in Gryffindor, and that little piece of sh- poop Draco Malfoy got into Slytherin with the hat barely touching him.
"Malfoy, Larissa." Professor McGonagall called
She sat down on the stool and when the hat was placed on her the hat said
"You can be in... Huff- just joking, SLYTHERIN!"
Draco looked shocked when he saw his sister almost sorted into Hufflepuff. Larissa ignored it and ran along into the Slytherin table beside Draco. He right away rumbled things to her.
After more students got sorted,
"Potter, Carly."
I was shaking as I went in front. Harry, Ron and Lia bid me good luck. I saw Tori give me a thumbs up from the Hufflepuff table. I heard other students whispering indistinct things, I bet it was about me.
I sat down on the stool, I was not breathing. I thought, well fu- I don't care what house I am.
"Oh, the famous Harry Potter's sister, Carly. You can be in... Ravenclaw? no. Then maybe SLYTHERIN!" he whispered everything except the Slytherin part.
WHAT!?
I walk up to the Slytherin table looking at Harry all distressed, he, Ron and Lia just stare at me. I looked down and felt like crying. I also heard the loud whispering of the whole hall until Professor McGonagall shushed them. I heard the Slytherin chanting "WE GOT THE OTHER POTTER!". I sat down in front of Larissa but I disregarded her trying to talk to me. I also saw Draco stand up to greet me, good thing his sister stopped him.
It was Harry's turn. Everyone in the hall whispered again, then after seconds that felt like forever he was sorted into Gryffindor.
After 2 other people got sorted, Ron got sorted into Gryffindor with Harry.
"White, Ophelia."
The students cheered and I heard other people saying, "She's so beautiful!" or "She looks cute!"
"Hmm," the hat hummed.
"You are totally GRYFFINDOR!"
The Gryffindor table cheered and I saw Harry clapping so hard and smiling. He only stopped smiling and cheering when she sat beside Harry.
I searched for Tori and I saw her talking to other Hufflepuffs. I heard another Slytherin whispering to her friend "Look, a first year is talking to Cedric Diggory" she pointed to Tori.
They totally forgot about me.
After Zabini, Blaise got to our table and the headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, got onto his feet and gave a little speech.
"Welcome!" he said. "Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts! Before we begin our banquet, I would like to say a few words. And here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!
"Thank you!"
He's mental, I thought.
The dishes in front of me are filled with food. We ate but I didn't feel hungry, but I tried eating. I grabbed mashed potato and it was DELICIOUS and I got some more, momentarily forgetting my problems. My worries came back when I saw Ophelia talking to Harry. I wish I was in Gryffindor with them. I think of what my parents would say to me. I'm a failure.
"Potter!" That shitty Draco snapped me back to reality
"Welcome to Slytherin, let's be friends."
"No,"
"Stay away from me." I snapped and got back to my food.
"Draco, just let her be." Larissa stopped him from talking.
"Father will hear about this, Larissa." Draco slammed his fork to the table.
"Not until I tell father about-" I couldn't hear what she said in the last part when she whispered something to her brother.
After that he got quiet.
A ghost sat close to us, he was all bloody with his silver blood. I felt uncomfortable sitting with a ghost...
I saw Harry looking at our table. I mouthed to him Harry, help me, please. but he looked away before he could read my lips.
During pudding, I had (the best) ice cream. Harry glanced past Professor Quirrel and glimpse at a hooked nosed teacher and he clasped his forehead. I almost stood up to go to Harry, but I remained seated. I looked at the Professor again and Larissa informed me that he was 'Professor Snape', he was the head of our house and will be teaching potions.
My life is over now. I then slammed my head down on the table miserably
"Hey, Carly," I peeked up at Larissa and raised an eyebrow.
"I know you feel bad about being in Slytherin, but I'm here to help you" She continued. I sit up and rest my head between my hands, elbows intact at the top of the table. I looked at the Gryffindor table again.
"Sure." I lazily said.
"Ugh, stop staring at the Gryffindors for once in your life." The annoyed girl across the table whispered.
"Pardon?" I wanted to clear things up to see if she was talking to me.
"Oh, no, sorry. I was talking about my friend there, Simon Dalton, staring at White too." she pointed at a dirty blond guy that was, indeed staring at Lia.
"Er- sorry, ok."
Before the feast ended, the headmaster spoke. He talked about the forbidden forest, no using magic in the corridors, and oh yeah, the sport Tori was excited about, Quidditch. He also said something about the third-floor corridor being prohibited. We (I mean they) sang the horrendous school song. No one would hear me sing anytime soon.
It was the end of the feast. Some mean looking Slytherin prefects made the first years follow them. As we exited the Hall, I passed Harry, Ron and Lia. I looked directly at their eyes trying to get them to talk to me, none of them did. When almost all my hope was gone, Tori came running to me when she saw my attempts on talking to my Gryffindor (so called) friends.
"Oh, Carly. Look, I am here for you, I won't ignore you like they did, ok?" she held both of my shoulders softly.
I smiled a bit and nodded.
"BACK TO YOUR LINE, 10 POINTS FROM HUFFLEPUFF." One of the Slytherin prefects shouted at Tori. I want to punch them real bad, if it weren't for my extremely small body.
Tori scuffed, flipped her hair and walked to her new friend, whose name is, I think, Cedric Diggory.
At least I still got one friend talking to me and not just simply ignoring me, unlike my own twin brother. I hope he gets to his senses and finally talk to me, he knows I won't be like other Slytherins, right?
After we walked through the entrance hall, and arrived at a distinct door, we descended deep into the castle and arrived at a stone wall.
"Sanguinem monarchia." the prefect spoke. A passageway revealed itself, on the other side was the Slytherin common room. It looks... cold. Older students were already in the common room talking to one another.
A female prefect showed us a corridor at the far right of the common room. In the corridor, we turned left to the stairs which led us to our dorms.
One door down the stairs had a sign with 5 names on it, most notably, mine and Larissa's. I entered it and it revealed a warm green room with 5 four-posters, and outside the window was, seemingly, the bottom of the lake we crossed earlier. Three other girls were already there talking to one another, they whispered when they saw me enter the room.
"What?" I asked walking towards the bed with my trunks on the side. The other girls rolled their eyes and continued whispering.
While I was fixing the materials on my trunk, Larissa entered.
"Hullo, Carly. Guess we're dormmates." she smiled and approached the bed on my left. It was also in the back of the room, in the middle.
"'Rissa!" a pug faced girl called while sitting on her bed across from me.
"What, Pansy?" Larissa replied with lack of interest.
"Tomorrow's your birthday right? I bought you a gift!" Pansy grabbed a wrapped present from her trunk.
"Thank you, but my birthday is the day after tomorrow. " now she sounds extra annoyed.
"Oh, sorry!"
"Your turning 12 already right?" the tall girl on my right said.
Larissa nodded.
"Then why are you in your first year?" the mousy girl on Pansy's left wondered.
"I don't know, and just SHUT UP so I can get some rest around here." she shouted and the 3 girls were all angry.
"You didn't have to shout." The tall girl stood up.
Larissa looked at me playing with my black quill. I looked at her back and shrugged.
"Sorry, Millicent, Roxanne, Pansy, just tired."
Once I finish unpacking my books and materials for tomorrow, I lay down and think about what I've done to be in Slytherin, what would Hagrid say, what would my parents say. It was not long until I drifted off to sleep.
I woke up in the middle of the night so I can go to the loo. After that, I couldn't sleep anymore and checked the magical alarm clock I got from a store in Diagon Alley, it was quarter to five. I stood up, got changed into my robes, and grabbed my books and wand to go to the common room.
When I got upstairs, a tall man's silhouette was sitting on a chair near the fireplace, writing on a parchment. The only light source was his candle, so I couldn't see his face, plus he wasn't facing me. He didn't notice me arrive.
I built up the courage to ask him if he could light up the fireplace.
"Hi, excuse me-" the man stood up, looked at me a bit, but not enough for me to see his face. He put out his candle and took his things and ran down to their dorms.
Okay~~
I sighed and dropped my things on the couch nearby the fireplace. I pictured the page of the fire spell to inflame the fireplace. I perfectly remembered each and every detail in that page. The words I needed to say were Incendio and drew a fire-like shape with my wand.
I hesitated about whether I should really use it. Would I get expelled? I'm a reckless first year so whatever.
"Incendio." I spoke while doing the wand movement the book said I should do. A little spark ignited in my wand but nothing much happened after that.
I sighed and did it again, this time a small fire shot to the fireplace and lit it up. I was so amazed, I backed up and looked at my wand.
A sleepy Larissa was sitting in a chair with a table in front of her, watching me. I turned around when I heard her drop a parchment and quill.
"Woah, did you just cast a spell on your second time?" she said, picking up her parchment and quill.
"Er- yes? I think so... Wait, when did you get here?" I knitted my brows trying to think.
"When you started your first spell." she readied her quill to write on the parchment, she had no ink but she still wrote, 'Father,'
"How-"
"Oh, it's a self refilling quill my father charmed and gave me, he sometimes likes to... experiment with charms."
"Ah," I sat down on the couch to her right with all my things on it.
"I'm writing to my father about the gifts for my birthday," she wrote down some more words, I turned away to give her privacy.
"Are you and your father close?" I asked.
"Eh, he's closer to Draco. How about you and Harry?"
"Oh... yeah, we only had each other, but now he's not talking to me." I slammed my book beside me and wondered what the day would bring for the now lonely Potter.
