Blueeyeddevil06, thank you for being my beta and helping me wrap this story up well. You were right about the ending!
A few weeks later, when Zuko arrived for the weekend, there was a vehicle in the driveway where he usually parked. He grabbed his bag and locked his car. He then made his way to the front door and knocked.
A nervous-looking Katara opened the door and whispered, "I promise he just got here. I didn't know he was coming."
He then heard a man yell out, "Who's here, sweetheart?"
Zuko's stomach dropped. Sweetheart? He didn't like the sound of that.
Katara rolled her eyes at Zuko. "You're an idiot," she whispered. She then yelled out, "It's Zuko, Dad." She then shot Zook an annoyed look.
"Sorry," he whispered.
"Where's Sokka?"
"What?" Zuko asked in confusion.
"I'm assuming you came with Sokka. Why else would you be here?" Her father looked at him in confusion.
Katara blushed and said, "He's my boyfriend." She then looked to her father for his reaction.
"You didn't tell me you're seeing him," he said accusingly.
"No, but you had to be reached by your satellite phone!" She huffed out and took Zuko's bag from him. "Dad, I'm dating Zuko. Sokka approves of him."
"And what about me? Doesn't my opinion count?"
"Only if you're reasonable."
"He's not sleeping in your room."
"Fine. No problem there. My father sleeping in the room next to me would kill the mood anyway."
Zuko took his bag back and said, "I'll go drop this in the guest room. I'll let you two… talk."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I already explained. I didn't tell you I'm going to counseling either."
"You are?!" He was thrilled to hear that, and his smile let her know that too. "What made you decide to go?"
"Zuko convinced me. It's helping. I've stopped having the nightmares."
"Sweetheart, I'm so glad to hear that!" He hugged her. "Is that why you're going to university full time with your brother?" He then scowled, "Or are you going there because of Zuko?! You can't just follow a boy. I didn't raise you to be like that!"
"Dad, calm down. I decided to go there before we told each other how we felt."
"Good." He then sighed, "He's been sleeping in your room, hasn't he?"
"Do you want the answer to that?"
"No. I don't." He then went back to a safer topic. "He got you to go to counseling? Did you make the woman cry again?"
"Yes, he got me to go. And no, I didn't make her cry." Katara shrugged as she said, "She's right about things. It helps."
"And?"
"Well, besides the dreams and university, she has me confronting my issues. We talk about Zuko too. She's a big fan of his."
"She is?" her father asked.
"Yeah, he's incredibly supportive. She said he's good for me and not afraid of a strong woman."
"That's good." Her father sighed. "I'm going to have to like him, aren't I?"
"Think of it this way. Sokka and I both really like him. I think you will too." She then chuckled. "Although, of course being Sokka, he pretended for a whole day to hate the idea of him visiting on the weekends and wouldn't talk to Zuko."
"And Aang?" He shrugged, "I have to ask."
"Aang's annoyingly okay with this."
He looked at her questioningly, "Annoyingly?"
"Yeah. It's a little insulting how much it doesn't bother him." She huffed out in frustration.
"You want him upset?"
"Honestly, yes. At least a little bit." She rolled her eyes. "I know it's dumb. Sorry." The fact was she didn't like that Aang and her father could so easily walk away from her. She did realize it was her issue. Well, the therapist pointed that out to her.
"Are Zuko and Aang okay?"
"Yes. And really, that's a huge relief. I don't want to come between friends." She then changed the subject. "How long are you home for?"
"Tonight, then I have to get going tomorrow." He sighed out. "Now I wonder if I should stay. Zuko's here."
She ignored that comment. She knew he would leave in the morning. "What animal this time?"
"Back to the Aye-Aye. Sokka keeps asking me to bring him one, which is illegal." He laughed, "He wants to call it Momo and teach it to give people the middle finger." He rolled his eyes. He then spoke up and said, "It's safe to come in, Zuko."
Zuko stepped in, "I didn't want to interrupt."
"My daughter says I should like you. Apparently, her therapist likes you too."
"You discuss me with her?" He looked concerned.
"Yeah, she really likes you." She gave him a hip bump. "Something about you being a supportive boyfriend."
He smiled, "Well, that's easy since you're amazing." He then looked at Katara's father. "If you want me to leave, I can go."
"No!" Katara yelled out. "He's leaving tomorrow morning anyway."
Zuko's heart broke for her. He'd just gotten home, and then he was going to be off again, leaving her alone. What he said was, "Then I think I should take us all out to dinner. What do you think?"
Later that night, Katara snuck into his room. "I thought you said we'd sleep in separate rooms?" Even as he asked, he scooted over to make room for her.
"I said you wouldn't sleep in my room." She climbed under the covers and rested her head on his shoulder.
"So, what do you think of my dad?"
Zuko knew criticism wouldn't be helpful to her right now. What he said was edited, but still the truth. "His work is fascinating. It's incredible the impact that he can make. He's also a very gifted storyteller."
"It is fun listening to him talk about it all." She rested her hand on his chest.
"I also think he doesn't hate me."
"No, he's already starting to like you." She then looked up at him. "By the way. You really started to get upset when he called me Sweetheart. You thought I had another boyfriend."
"My brain wasn't working in overdrive like it needed to. A man I'd never met called you sweetheart, and you looked nervous. Sorry."
She laid her head back down, chuckling, "I was nervous because I knew it would be obvious what we were doing together."
"And that is?" He asked, with humor in his tone.
"I believe you call them 'naked weekends.'"
He smiled and kissed the top of her head. "Yes, but I don't think he's figured out that much, by the way. You're wearing pajamas. I believe this breaks the rules."
"When my father's in the house, the rules change a bit."
He pretended to pout. "So I'm not going to have you screaming out in ecstasy tonight?"
He felt her laugh more than he heard it. "No, that would be… awkward."
"Fine. No sex tonight." He held her tightly. "You know I'm teasing, right? I'm more than happy just to hold you."
"I know." She kissed his bare shoulder. "I know the truth."
"And that is?"
"That you love me."
"I love you so much, Katara."
She smiled and said, "And I love you too."
He pulled her underneath him and hovered over her. "You better. I would be a wreck if you ever stopped."
"I think your heart is safe with me."
"You think?!" He then began tickling her.
She was laughing when she said, "I know! I know it's safe with me." She then giggled.
He stopped and kissed her. Then he laid next to her and spooned her. "That's much better. Good night. I'm looking forward to some alone time tomorrow."
"So am I." She then closed her eyes. She loved him so much.
It was a week before the start of the semester and Katara was moving into her dorm room. She was nervous about her new roommate. Word was she'd chased out the roommate she had the first semester.
She tentatively knocked on the door. When it opened, she introduced herself, "Hi, I'm Katara."
"Ah, my new victim. Come on in, Sweetness. My name's Toph." The girl then motioned for her to come in. "Don't move my things around, I'm blind."
"No problem. I'll leave your things alone." Katara looked around the room and noticed that Toph really hadn't put much effort into making the room comfortable.
She chuckled, "You're going to hate all my throw pillows, aren't you?"
Toph shrugged, "It's not like I care if they have cute puppies on them or something."
"You just don't seem to like clutter."
"What do I care? I can't see it." She then sat on her bed to stay out of the way.
"Well, I should introduce these guys," Katara said. "This is my brother, Sokka, then there's my boyfriend Zuko, and here is Aang."
"Her ex!" Aang said excitedly.
"Is that a joke?" Toph asked. "He sounds way too excited to be dumped for another guy."
Sokka burst out laughing, "They were broken up before she met Zuko. They're both my best friends." He shrugged. "It works."
"So you don't mind if your friend is sleeping with your sister?"
Sokka shuddered, "Ew! My sister isn't a girl! We've discussed this."
Katara had blushed, "What makes you think…"
Toph sighed, "It's that or you wear men's cologne. I took a guess." She then shrugged. "Zuko, you're responsible for bringing us breakfast every Saturday morning. If I'm going to be having to deal with you, I should get something out of it."
"Deal," he said. "If I supply you with lunch too, will you lie to Sokka about how many nights she sleeps in here?"
Toph burst out laughing. "I'm going to end up liking you."
The End.
