New chapter! I see that a guest left their thoughts on Kaito, we'll just have to wait and see where will the story go and what will be Kaito's purpose. Thank you for the review!
I do not own Hayate the combat butler or any of its characters, all rights to Hata Kenjiro.
(Hayate's perspective)
The week went by quickly and before I knew it, it's already Friday. "It's the weekend Ojousama! What are your plans for tomorrow?" I asked, usually during the weekends Ojousama would just sit around the house playing video games or work on her manga. I do try encourage her to go out and do some outdoor activities, but it mostly doesn't happen.
"I'm going to Kaito's place tomorrow" My head popped up from surprisement, she doesn't usually go to other people's houses unless she needs to or there's an occasion, so I'm quite curious as to why she wants to go to someone's place she just met a week ago. If I were to think about it, Ojousama has been spending some time with Kaito lately.
"What are you going there for?" I asked curiously, "Kaito is helping me with my manga and he suggested on working on it at his place"
"I see.. "
"Don't get any ideas! I only accepted to do it in his house since I'm digging dirt on him. His family might be familiar to me so I'm gonna get to the bottom of this!"
Tomorrow came, and I just dropped Ojousama off, "Call me when you need me or if anything happens". I went back home and finished most of my daily chores. I sat on the couch and relaxed my body from the hours of cleaning. Now that my duties are done, I don't think I have anything else to do. I guess I got used to always being dragged by Ojousama in playing video games with her on the weekends, but because she's not here, it kinda feels..lonely. As I contemplated on what to do, Maria entered the room, she looked at me and let out a sigh,
"You're bored, aren't you? Without Nagi, no one seems to be keeping you company or nagging you around" She sat beside me on the couch and gave a little chuckle,
"I guess I just finished my chores too soon" I returned my gaze to the clock and watched it ticking as time goes by.
"Hayate.." I faced Maria as she called my name, "I want you to keep an eye on Kaito for awhile". I was confused for a moment, is there something going on?
"I've talked with Nagi's grandfather about him and it seems that.. the Tanaka family had a troubled past with them"
(Nagi's perspective)
"So, this is where you live huh" I followed Kaito as we entered his home, I didn't expect from him to live in this kind of house. Seeing that he goes to Hakuo Academy, I thought he was pretty well off or with some sort of rich relative that I just don't know of.
"Yeah, unlike your humongous mansion, I live in this small minka"
Though it is small, I kinda like it, it gives a comfy and solitude feeling, it reminds me of the time I lived in the violet mansion. The whole structure of the house is very traditional, the paintings on the wall are fascinating and with intricate designs. We settled in the study room and started to work on my manga. The progress was quite good and we managed to finish a few pages. I also got to check out some of the stories he has written and it has given me some inspiration to work with. After hours of constantly working we decided to take a break.
"Would you like some tea?"
I responded with a nod and as he went to prepare it, I realized it has been quiet since we've began working and I have not seen anyone else here. After waiting for awhile, Kaito returned with cups and a kettle. "Do you live alone?" I asked as I poured my tea into a cup,
"Well kinda"
Kinda? What kind of answer is that?
"My father sometimes stays here, but, most of the time I'm on my own"
"How about your mother?" I looked at him and noticed a change in his expression
"Oh, uhm.. I don't have one"
Ah, so he's just like me
"She died giving birth to me.. I've never met her..." He shifted his position facing the wall and stared at a painting of a woman. I looked at the painting and assumed it was his mother. "She's very beautiful" I commented and noticed him smiling.
"Yes, she really was" he shifted back to the table and poured himself a cup of tea. I decided to take this opportunity to ask more about his family since we're already having this conversation. "What does your father do?" He seemed hesitant when I asked that question, "Business stuff maybe?" He looked me in the eyes and let out a sigh,
"I'm not actually sure.. we rarely see each other or even talk. He's always busy for work and giving what's best for me, but he never really considers what I want..just to spend time with him" the room was silent for a moment, that silence then broke when I heard a laugh from him.
"It's quite sad, isn't it? I don't have a mother, and my relationship with my father is one sided.
I can see the sadness in his eyes, and I.. can relate to it.
"I-I'm sorry for talking about this, you probably wouldn't understand—"
"I understand, I.. understand your loneliness"
He laughed a little and gave me a confused look, "No need to pity me, compared to my life you have extreme wealth and people taking care of you, isn't that enough to say you have it good?"
"I guess so... but, I lost both of my parents. My father died before I was even born, and my mother.. left me too soon" I lowered my head from the thought of missing my mother.
"I'm.. sorry to hear that"
I tried my best not to feel melancholic, I raised my head and gave him a smile, "It's okay, At least now you know you're not alone!"
I guess he was quite moved, he turned around to hide his face and mumbled a few words.
"Y-yeah..thank..you"
(Hayate's perspective)
The day came to an end, I got up and made my way to pick up Ojousama. "Thanks for the help, Kaito" they waved their goodbyes and I escorted her to the car.
"Phew! I'm quite tired" said Ojousama as she buckled her seatbelt.
"Did you enjoy today?" I asked,
"I did actually, my manga made some improvements and I got to talk to Kaito"
"Oh, that's.. great"
It kinda feels unfair, she enjoyed her day with Kaito, while I... spent the day staring at the clock or waiting for the phone to ring in case you needed me. Is it wrong to think like this? Is it selfish? If this keeps on going.. will I be okay leaving you one day? I stared outside the window when I felt her head resting against my shoulder,
"But I'd still rather choose to spend my days with you, Hayate"
I don't know why...but, hearing those words gave me reassurance that everything will be okay, not only that, it also gave unexpected butterflies in my stomach. Staring outside the distance from the window, it made me remember the words Maria said to me awhile ago. I want you to keep an eye on Kaito for awhile. I wonder if Ojousama knows something, "Ojousama, have you successfully found out something about Kaito?" I waited for her response, but then I realized as I looked at her, she has fallen asleep on my shoulder. I smiled and gently moved her bangs to the side. No matter what it may be I have to look after for, I promise I'll be there and protect you..
