Toshinori didn't flinch when the phone rang. He knew who it would be. After all that he had said about UA, a call was inevitable. But he still didn't care for the conversation that would come after.
Letting out a defeated sigh, Toshinori stood up and picked up the phone. The voices in the back of his mind shouted to stop. He shouldn't answer it. This was a mistake. His secrets would all be exposed and then his work was for nothing! Don't answer! Don't!
But he did anyway. "Hello, Mr. Yagi speaking." He spoke with a cheer his older self would've used, but it sounded too fake, even in his own ears.
"Ah, hello again, All Might." Nezu's voice came through so clear, it was as if the small mammal was in his very living room. "It really has been too long since we last spoke. How have things been on your end? I heard you got a new home out by the country side. I've never been a fan of houses so far away from the rush of the city, it makes my fur irritated and you know how much I value hygiene."
So this was how Nezu planned to be. Fine, Toshinori could play along with his stupid conversations and lectures. He could always get rid of the little rat with a few more rumors of mistreatment of their poor Symbol. He had the police chief's sympathy already.
"Hello, Principal Nezu, Sir! It really has been a while. I'm sorry for not calling before now. I was a bit caught up in my own recovery, though, that isn't really much of an excuse, is it?" He laughed softly. He knew Nezu didn't buy a single word of it, but this was always how their mind games went about. The mouse would pretend like nothing was different while giving away hidden messages and hints at what he truely wanted to say. Most were too stupid to ever pick up on them, but Toshinori was anything but stupid.
"Oh, all is forgiven, my friend." Nezu laughed. "I must say that I'm surprised to hear from the police chief that there's a murder case so close to your establishment. That must be very stressful for you, since you could've saved those teenagers, had you not lost your quirk in the fight at Kamino Ward. Oh, a shame it is."
Now this was bold. Nezu must really be upset in order to be so direct with him. "You really know how to play onto someone's deepest insecurities, don't you." Toshinori didn't bother to hide some of the bite, though, he didn't really care about what his old powers could do. He was stronger now, even though it wasn't obvious. He wasn't some weak idiot who fought for the lives of people who never even cared for his safety. That's why he never told the public about his injuries. They would throw him out and move onto the next big hero. In fact, they likely already have.
"It was forward of me, yes. Though, I mean no harm when I say that I'm astonished no one found any evidence involving you. We both know your track record, despite your months in a mental institution. Perhaps I'm not as good of a judge in character as I thought? Or maybe the police chief is the one who his mistaken, hm?"
Toshinori chuckled through the line. "No offense, Mr. Nezu, but the police chief has been working with criminals and potential suspects for how many years? And all you do is oversee a high school. I'd have to say that you're far less experienced in these matters. In fact, I'm not entirely sure why you're even calling me. You're not my employer anymore."
"Ah, that is true, isn't it." Nezu hummed softly to himself. "You're free to go about your business on your own and I've likely interrupted said business, but I didn't call for nothing, All Might. You know this already." There was a pause and Toshinori waited for those harsh words he knew would come out in a kind tone. "I can't let you insult my school, All Might. I can tolerate the police chief's ignorance but once you involve UA, I must step up."
It wasn't a surprise, but the phrasing was a bit odd. "You'd let someone murder people without batting an eye, but as soon as I tell the truth about UA, you get defensive? I have to say, I thought you were better than us emotionally charged humans."
"Are you trying to start an argument you can't win, All Might?"
There was a long pause where Toshinori couldn't figure out what to say. He was, honestly. He wanted to get a chance to insult Nezu for every hard task he was given. Nezu kicked him out of UA, promised that the man would end up in mental hospital if he were to return and then did just that. How is that fair? Wasn't Toshinori supposed to be mentally ill and struggling to get over the mistakes of his past? The guilt of what he had done?
"Tell me what you want, Nezu." He didn't feel up to playing games so much, anymore. "Did you just call to threaten me?"
"Oh no. I know better than to leave you with another threat, even if I do fully intend to come through with it. No, I'll be sending someone over to speak with you on UA's behalf."
This, Toshinori didn't want. At all. "You're sending someone to talk to me? Aren't I dangerous?" He hissed it out despite the clear point he made.
"I'm sending our most capable staff member. I do insist that you play nice, though. If you decide to involve UA again, or hurt my massagers, then I will give the police chief every scrap of evidence I can find to get you locked up in Tartarus for the rest of your meaningless life. Understood?" Despite the threat, Nezu's voice still sounded chipper as ever. Almost as if they never strayed from the light topic between friends. It made him sound like he had the upper hand, but Toshinori knew better. He was far more powerful than anyone else!
"Fine. I'll meet with your little escorts." With that, Toshinori threw the phone, ending the conversation. Now, he had to relieve some stress. That conversation went worse than he would've hoped for and a nice, long bath would truly be nice at a time like this. He could even light a few candles to set a nice aroma-
But the voices started to raise in volume. They were louder than their constant whispers, something he couldn't just ignore anymore. Toshinori gasped as he fell back into the couch cushion, holding his head as his skull rattled with the words they spoke.
Kill them. Why should Nezu get the chance to send someone to you? You should destroy everything he has left.
Who do you think will come visit us? Could it be a teacher? Oh, wouldn't you love to rip out Midnight's heart? Or maybe tear open Present Mice's throat?
What about Ectoplasm? He could make clones and it would be twice as fun to destroy him so many times. You know you could, so easily.
Or maybe they'd send a student? It would be unexpected and perhaps Nezu underestimates your power. He may think that you wouldn't hurt a child you used to teach.
Tear open Tokoyami's lungs! Let's see if his quirk can protect him in time!
No! No! That Iida looks like he packs more blood! You could split his head in half with our axe!
No! Kill Kaminari!
Kill Kirishima!
No! Destroy Jiro! Show him what a true hero can do!
Murder Uraraka!
"NO!" Toshinori screamed into the air. His palms were squeeze either side of his head, trying to clasp his ears shut. But the voices were all inside of his head. He couldn't stop their words from coming, begging him to maim each student they thought of.
"I can't...I can't!" He wheezed out, his lungs burning as he gasped for air. He felt like he couldn't breathe. Like sharp fingernails were digging into his lungs.
Kill Todoroki!
"Leave me alone! I fed you already today!" He pleaded.
Kill Bakugou!
"Please, stop! I can't do this! I can't!"
KILL MIDORIA!
Toshinori sank to his knees as he screamed into the open. His voice echoed across the tree line. His hands shook below him, no longer covering his ears. His breath came out in sharp exhales and he never felt like he could suck in enough air to replenish it. His head was spinning, but finally, the voices were slowing down. They were getting softer and his panic started to ease. He could control himself again.
But his throat closed once he saw the blood on his hands, the dark liquid running up his wrists and splattered along his forearms. Before him was a pile of those little rabbit babies who were now cold and lifeless, just like their mother. His axe was nowhere to be seen. That meant that he killed them all with his bare hands. He must've squeezed the very life out of them.
"No." He sobbed to himself, his fingers running into his light hair. He didn't care if the blood stained his scalp. "Please...no." He reached down and picked up a few of the corpses. They were so small. Gentle, like innocent children. Like his own innocent children. The ones he taught at UA.
They didn't know anything better than the hole their mother made for them and he ripped that apart from them too. They did nothing wrong, yet he killed them to satisfy his own needs.
He was losing control.
No, he was beyond that. He had lost all control a long time ago, but was just barely learning this now. He had to hide this before the escort came.
...
Toshinori took a scalding shower after that, trying to rid himself of the blood he knew would never leave his hands. At the very least, it came off of his skin and hair, which was a relief. He wanted to look presentable for whoever Nezu sent to him. It would likely be a teacher, since they were all pro heroes and could hold him back if anything happened.
You should let something happen, Toshinori.
He ignored the voice as he dressed in a button up shirt and put on his finest vest. He wore his older stripped, yellow pants that he loved so much while he worked at UA. Then, with a leopard print tie to top it all off, he looked at himself in the mirror.
He was different. That much was very clear with how he stood. He didn't hunch over like his scar would rip open if he just stretched out a bit. He also looked fuller, like he had actually eaten something before the day started, which was a change from how he used to be, he guessed. But the most distinct difference was the look in his eyes. Instead of insecurity or guilt, his eyes held despair and fear. He wasn't sure what to do with himself anymore. He wasn't sure if he could even fight back.
All too soon, a knock came at he door and he rushed out of his bedroom, habit making him close his behind him. He rushed towards the door while dusting off anything that may be out of place. He was just nervous, that much he knew, but who would blame him? He had always been a bundle of nerves and to learn that he may be meeting one of his past co-workers again? Well, it was agonizing just to wonder who it might me.
He didn't name anyone out of fear of what the voices would say, so he kept his mind blank as he tried to smooth his unruly curls back once last time before opening the door.
The sight that he came to made him stop dead in his tracks. His eyes went wide, he could feel it, but he didn't care to school his expression from these two.
There, on the steps of his home, stood Aizawa and Young Izuku Midoriya.
Author's Notes: Hello! I really like this chapter actually and don't worry! The last chapter, which will be next, is coming soon after this! It was on such a long hiatus that I feel it really needs a solid ending for all of you! Also, I've had this story going for so long that I'm finally willing to part with it. I have to make room for more projects but don't think that I'll be rushing this. I'll give my heart and soul to this ending! Plus Ultra style!
