Major Crimes Mysteries
The Family McCoy
Chapter 7
"First, I want to let each and every one of you know that what we walked into today was a highly traumatic scene." Sharon began. "We had several victims who barely had a chance to begin their lives and they were snuffed out by evil. I want each and every one of you to know that if it would help you to see Dr. Joe or any other therapist, please let me know and I will ensure the department will pay for it." Even as she was saying it, Sharon could feel Andy's eyes baring down on the back of her head. She ignored it until she could no longer stand it and turned to face him. He had the most incredulous look on his face that in all the years they had known each other she had never seen him with look as disgusted as he looked at this moment. Anyone who knew Andy Flynn for a second, knew that was saying a lot. Sharon chose to ignore him and instead, turned to face the board.
"So, what do we have here people? Tell me what you've got." Sharon asked the group.
Buzz was the first to answer. "Amy and I met with the neighbor who alleges he saw the murderer leave the house. We are going to be interviewing him later today because there is something fishy sounding about his story, but there wasn't enough to bring him down to the station."
"Why do you say something fishy, Buzz?" Sharon asked.
"Well, he didn't have many nice things to say about Rebecca McCoy and his fascination with Katey McCoy just seemed strange. It didn't pass the smell test with either Amy or I, but definitely not enough to be a smoking gun. We just wanted to get him down here and on the record."
"That is awesome, Buzz!" Sharon said. "I love when you really think out of the box with suspects. It is better to be safe than sorry." As Buzz smiled proudly, the team could hear Provenza groan and rub his face. The only thing was the team listening to Sanchez call him the teacher's pet. It was obvious that Buzz always held a special place with the Commander, and she wasn't shy to show it.
"What does everyone else think?" Sharon asked the group. Mike informed them he had taken all the computers and phones from the crime scene and would be searching them for any information about anyone who held a grudge against the family. Buzz had taken Sanchez's place in being a backup techy for Tao, but with interviewing Jason Walkmire with Amy and then completing the follow-up, his hands would be tied. Sharon thought about calling Lieutenant Sanchez down to assist Mike, but Mike said he would call Julio himself if he felt he was getting overwhelmed in the doing the work. Sharon let him know she would leave it in his hands and moved on.
"What else do we need to do?" She asked the group.
Wes piped up "Well we need to interview Katey's friends. If the neighbor is right and he isn't a cold-blooded killer, the perpetrator sounded like he was close to her age."
"Exactly Wes. Why don't you and Cami spend the afternoon talking to Katey's friends. They will probably open up more to you two than us seniors." Sharon said with a chuckle. Wes and Cami looked at each other and shook their heads. "Great idea, Boss." Cami said to Sharon. The team could hear another groan come from Provenza's desk and let out a chuckle.
"Andy and Lieutenant, why don't you go and speak to Dr. McCoy's office staff. Maybe he had a disgruntled patient or family member." Sharon said. "I will be meeting Dr. Morales to go over the autopsies. When you get done, both of you can join me there. We just need to make sure to be back here before four to interview the parents."
"Hey Boss, what do you want me to do?" Myra piped up. "I could go with any of these guys and get some great stuff recorded." The team could see Sharon thinking long and hard about what to do with Myra. Myra was right, Sharon thought. There were so many potential suspects and so many potential paths this case could take that she wished she had several Myra at her fingertips. Sadly, she didn't though. "I'd like you to go with Wes and Cami. I think having the kids on film will be most important. Just in case we have to remind them of their conversations at a later date." While Sharon hated she felt that way, she was smart enough to know that she raised three teenagers and knew that sometimes a recorded conversation was the best to have.
Both Flynn and Provenza acknowledged her order and grabbed their jackets off the back of their chairs. Sharon touched the sleeve Andy's jacket lightly. It was their hug goodbye when the rest of the team members were around them. Andy could feel his love for her overtake his anger at her comments in the beginning of the discussion. Deep down, he knew it would have to do. He also knew that somehow; they would get through anything thrown at them, including this. He wanted to take her in his arms and tell her that, but both even though now married for three years, continued to be overly cautious about any form of PDA around the team. Instead, he simply turned to her and gave her one of his smiles.
