"A bit woozy and my head hurts." It takes Harry a few moments to work out where she is. The cool hand that he's not holding flies to her stomach, her eyes wide and alert, "Dempsey, please.. is our baby alright?"

Despite his confusion and a whole load of emotional turmoil he can't work out, he smiles at her words, our makes him feel a whole lot better. "Fine. Two different doctors and a paramedic have checked you both over. Everything is good."

Now she's awake, he can deal with the sonogram. He takes a peek at the black and white stuff that makes no sense apart from one small dot that instinctively his partner knows is the baby. He still points it out and Harry indulges him anyway.

"Maybe I'll feel better if I sit up." She tries to find the button to move the bed. He locates it for her and the mechanism winds into place. He wishes his brain worked so easily. He has a million questions but he goes against his usual nature and holds back.

"I wanted to tell you." Harry begins after a moment of studying his face and the sonogram, perhaps judging his reactions and finding that he measures up. "It's been awful. First Simone, and then all that stuff with the bank robbery. And I panicked, I didn't know what to do. Especially after you said to Simone about…"

"You've got nothing to apologise for." He says quietly.

"Yes I do." She admits and he watches her eyes fill with tears for the second time today wish he could stop it but waiting it out until she finds the words. "I could have lost our baby before you even knew and I don't think I could have lived with that."

"Harry, I get why you put it off after what I said when we were with Simone." He can't blame her for his stupidity and leans forward to make his point, relieved when the guilty frown finally leaves her face. "I sure as hell wasn't going to tell you about what I felt in front of her, not about about loving you. But we haven't lost the baby."

He's slightly in awe at the words. She's really pregnant with a life that he had a small part in creating. "We've gotta focus on what we've got. I know it's tough, I figured that when I saw the ultrasound but we've got to try, for the peanut in here."

Harry's eyes soften at this as she realises that he's not running away or blaming her. Then he has to know. "When did you find out?"

"Just after Swabey for certain. I think the peanut was conceived at the time of Chas's wedding. I was so ill with the hangover but I forgot about the pill." She looks nervously at him. He remember the wedding well. Some of Chas's wife's friends had tried to chat him up and Harry had drunk her way to oblivion in a pique of misplaced jealously. He'd taken her home, commiserated over the morning after the night before and secretly fell in love a bit more. She'd wrapped herself around him as soon as she was better. Neither of them remembered extra protection as he'd showed her how nobody else mattered but along the way forgot to tell her for extra clarity.

"I didn't think either." He runs the back of his fingers down her cheek, a gesture he's done with her a million times now. Him and Harry, against all odds. He really isn't mad at her and the action seems to sooth them both.

"The sickness began, off and on, after then and I thought it might have been Swabey case, it took a bit out of me." She takes a sip of water and the both shiver. He shares her fears of what might have been on that night in the van. "Nobody else knows."

Dempsey is grateful for that detail, he'd be mortified if Spikings' knew the real reason she'd left. But he hates to think she's carried this news alone. "But you saw a doc, right?"

"Yes, after you got our photo taken at that wedding and the champagne made me feel queasy." She nods. "I was a coward, Dempsey. I ran away from you and the job. I lied to you about why I left. I said some awful things to you."

"Understandable. I ain't getting mad at you, I have something to do with this." He shrugs at her disbelief. "I don't understand completely but it makes more sense. I just wish I could go back in time and seen the signs, got involved."

"Well now you can be. If you want to be?" She suggests quietly.

"Jeez, Harry, yes. We can do this, there's nothing you and me can't do." He's never more certain about anything now he understands her panic and realises that he'd already predicted the cause was his own big mouth. He can't change that but maybe they do understand each other better than he thought.

"You okay with being back?" He queries, aware she'd said yes without explanation.

Harry nods, "But we need to tell Spikings when I'm out of here. I don't suppose there will be any choice, it'll be on my medical notes."

Dempsey thinks that over, it's not going to be easy on them both but he thinks the boss will be pleased for her and probably tighten the reins on them both for a while. That's no bad thing, he can't afford to be played by the likes of Edwards or Simmons now.

"Do you want a boy or a girl?" Harry asks.

"No idea, long as you're okay and whatever we're baking is fine." He means that too. "Never thought I'd be a pop to anyone."

"You'll be a great father." She yawns as he tries to assemble that significant detail. Harry thinks he'll be a great dad. That's good enough for him. "When can I go home?"

"Tomorrow, they just want to keep an eye on you. That's a real goose egg on your head, Makepeace. Don't try and get out before." He tries to be stern but she shakes her head with a smile, amused at his overprotective attitude already.

She's sleepy beside him. He pulls the chair closer and eventually settles for sitting on the side of the bed, unable to keep away from his small family anymore. From here, he can see over London and the evening darkness. Traffic moves like illuminated ants and the lights of the buildings are magnified by rain drops on the window in this city he now calls home.

"I'd better get my residency stuff sorted out." He remembers.

"Yes, you should. Better ring Freddie and your mum too." Harry murmurs. In the quiet space of her room, her head sinks to his side in sleep.

He is here to stay.
