Chapter 7
"It all started when we were apprentices. Pinepaw used to be clumsy, he could never catch enough prey, he was bad at fighting, and well, as for climbing trees lets just say he fell down a lot. Our parents weren't pleased that their son was so bad at everything and to make matters worse, I happened to be a natural at all those things. Pinepaw and I didn't care that I was better than him at all those things, we were best friends. But it did matter to our parents. It started off as small things, a cold glance here a nasty comment there but soon they wouldn't even speak to them. Pinepaw didn't care though. In his mind as long as we were together and friends it didn't matter if the whole clan hated him, but that all changed on the night of the battle with Thunderclan. We had both been selected to go to the battle and we were both excited as can be. This was our first battle after all. Pinepaw was fighting a Thunderclan warrior and I saw he was struggling so I went to help him. The warrior had him pinned and was about to strike but I crashed into the warrior and freed Pinepaw. Unfortunately that meant that I took the blow instead. That's how I got the scar on my ear. I didn't care, I got the scar saving my brother to me that was the best way to get injured, helping someone you loved. Our parents did care however and they were very angry. They didn't like Pinepaw before but this just pushed them over the edge. I tried explaining to them that I didn't care and that this was an accident but they wouldn't listen. In their minds, the only thing was that their clumsy good for nothing son's mistake caused their perfect little daughter to be hurt. They went to Darkstar and asked her to change Pinepaw's name to Uselesspaw so that he would be ashamed forever but Darkstar wouldn't do it, she said it was an honest mistake. Pinepaw was so upset because not only had his mistake hurt me but our parents wanted to rename him Uselesspaw to remind him of his mistake. That was where he drew the line. He just couldn't take it so he just shut out the entire family. He shut out our parents, he shut out you kits, and he even shut me out. And he's never been able to forgive our parents or himself since." Rosepaw sighed. "And that's the story of why Pinepaw is acting like he has." Frostkit couldn't believe it. Were her parents going to do this to her too? Either way she knew she had to fix things with Pinepaw.
