Chapter 7
Angie and Jackson walked along the river walk in Bricktown as Angie explained what happened.
"And because of my careless mistake, she lost her life," Angie said. "Those people were her parents."
"Oh," Jackson said.
"If I had called for backup, Amber would still be alive," Angie said. "It's all my fault."
"You need to stop blaming yourself," Jackson said. "And you don't know if calling for backup would've saved her. All the police officers in the Oklahoma City Metro could've been there and the outcome would've still remained the same. It wasn't your fault."
"I just don't know how to stop feeling so guilty," Angie said. "I've tried so hard to go on with my life."
"Maybe talking to a therapist would help," Jackson said.
"I don't know," Angie said. "That makes me sound too needy."
"It's not needy," Jackson said. "Sometimes you just need to talk to a therapist. It helped me get through the stress of college."
"Maybe you're right," Angie said.
Angie looked at Jackson.
"I'm so sorry," Angie said. "Here we are on a river walk on what is supposed to be our first date, and I've been going on about my pain and guilt. You know, I really like you."
"I really like you too," Jackson said. "And I'd really like to go out with you again."
"You mean that?" Angie asked.
"I do," Jackson replied.
Jackson and Angie looked over at one of the restaurants to see a band performing outside on a stage.
"Oh yeah," Angie said. "The Bricktown Music Festival starts tonight."
"Let's go," Jackson said, taking Angie by the hand.
A few hours later, Angie and Jackson walked up to their cars.
"I had a lot of fun," Angie said.
"Me too," Jackson said. "I can't wait for our next date."
Jackson and Angie shared a kiss.
"See you," Jackson said.
"See you," Angie said.
Angie got into her car, buckled, and drove away. She then smiled.
"What a kiss," Angie said.
As Jackson drove home, he sang along with the radio. He came up to a four-way stop and continued singing as he stopped. As he resumed his drive, a car ran a stop sign and slammed right into him, knocking him out and causing his air bags to deploy. Jackson's car spun around and hit a tree.
Half an hour later, Jackson regained consciousness and looked around.
"Oh my God!" Jackson screamed.
Jackson looked to see his phone on the front passenger's seat. He then picked it up and dialed 9-1-1.
"9-1-1," the dispatcher said. "What's your emergency?"
"This is Jackson Callerson," Jackson said in a painful tone. "I've been in a wreck. A car ran a stop sign and hit me."
