The market was full of noise. Today was one of those days when the heat on the Isle was suffocating and people couldn't keep still, so they went outside in search of trouble or some fresh air. Well, the freshest you could get on the Isle of the Lost. Early in the morning, before going to school, Uma had gone swimming and her body was keeping a bit of the coldness of the water. But she could tell that Harry and Gil were dying of heat from the way they tried to take the clothes off their bodies every few minutes.
They had to get some things for the trip, and although they were just a few items, they were taking longer than Uma would have liked. Gil had managed to get out everything Uma had hidden in her room, but she didn't want to run out of items in the middle of nothing and start rationing. That wouldn't make the crew happy, and she needed them working harder than ever.
"Is this so necessary?" Harry asked, echoing her thoughts. "I'm sure we can survive without soap or canned vegetables. It's not like they do a great job, anyway."
Uma elbowed him in the ribs and Harry groaned in pain, rubbing himself.
"Not on my ship, I don't even want to imagine what the place would smell like on the second day. And without those cans we would hardly have any food, so yeah, this is very, very necessary." Uma bit her lip anxiously as she watched Gil try to wipe off the sweat, he looked really miserable. "It's okay. We'll stop for a drink at Frollo's."
Harry and Gil thanked between complaints about the heat, the isle, the market, and the goblins. Harry's shirt was stuck to his body and Uma felt the sudden urge to kiss him, but she held back. She couldn't do it there. Not even Gil knew about their recent… change in relationship, and Uma wanted to wait until they were off the isle to tell him. Gil could be a bit careless at times, and Uma still didn't know what kinds of things might happen if someone found out about the love thing. They were in the midst of a rise in the isle's power ladder and the stakes were high.
A pair of witches walked past them and gave Uma a look that she couldn't interpret. Ahead, a group of whispering vendors, probably closing a shady deal, stopped talking as Gil, Harry, and Uma walked; their gazes followed Uma to the next street, where they entered Frollo's creperie. They choose a table in the corner and ordered drinks and food. Even the waiter gave Uma a strange look, and she snorted when he turned around to go for their order.
"Do I have something on my face?" She asked Harry and Gil angrily. "Everyone looks at me, not that I complain about that, but there is something in their expressions that worries me."
Gil raised an eyebrow, looking at Harry doubtfully.
"She really doesn't know?" He asked.
Harry shook his head.
Uma drummed her fingers impatiently on the table.
"Know what?"
Harry took off his hat and jacket, and the waiter arrived a moment later with the drinks, so the conversation got interrupted and Uma looked at him impatiently to intimidate him into leaving.
"On the dock you put on something of a show when you repaired the Lost Revenge," Harry commented, taking a long sip of his drink. Uma tried not to see how his wet lips closed after he had freshened up. He let out a noise of satisfaction. "And, well, there were a lot of witnesses. The news of Captain Uma doing magic has already spread around the dock and, from what I see, the market."
"And that is not good," Gil murmured, and he was right. For many villains the worst punishment was not being able to do magic and, if they found out that she had made it, they would not be happy. Uma suddenly felt smaller than she really was, but she shook the feeling from her as if she was brushing dust off her shoulders. If anyone dared try to harm her, she would put up a good fight, and everyone on the Isle knew that.
"Then we better finish these purchases as soon as possible and get back to the Lost Revenge, the sooner we get away from here the better, at least for now." Uma said, sounding strained. Under the table, Harry slid his hand up to hers for a quick squeeze.
They cooled down a bit in the creperie with the drinks and the crepes, and then continued their way through the market. They were going to the Fish and Chips when Harry stopped in front of a table displaying trinkets, took out some hoop earrings and bought them.
"I think you missed this last time, Captain," he murmured, and put them in Uma's hand. She smiled at him. "That way we won't be shipwrecked again."
"Will you help me pierce my ears?" Asked Uma, in a cheerful tone. It was a joke because Harry was lousy at anything involving a needle.
"I wouldn't ask him if I were you", warned Gil, who hadn't noticed the intense looks Harry and Uma were exchanging. Uma forced herself to break contact and keep walking. Harry smiled when he saw her playing with the earrings he had put in her hand, passing them between her fingers.
"Where do you think you are going?" Asked a voice, and Uma almost dropped the dishes she was carrying in surprise. Ursula was leaning against the kitchen table at the Fish and Chips. Uma straightened her back and adopted her usual haughty gesture, which she used to do whenever she was with her mother.
"To deliver this plate of crab brains?" Uma replied, taking a chance. She knew that Ursula was not talking about the plate, she knew that she had realized that she was preparing for a trip, but she did not expect her to care. The last time Uma left, the only goodbye Ursula gave her was splash her with a few drops of water.
Her mother raised an eyebrow.
"You don't want to go overboard with me, Uma. Now tell me where you are planning to go."
Uma sighed, she put down the plates that she carried in both hands and her grip traveled by habit to the hilt of her sword, before remembering that she had it tucked under the crew table. Her mother looked her up and down, as if she was trying to decide how strong or weak she was, which was probably what she was actually doing.
"To find something," Uma finally answered. Ursula narrowed her eyes and a tentacle rose to the level of Uma's neck, where her shell necklace hung.
"So, you found it, huh?" She asked. Uma thought she would yank it off and she was ready to fight for it, but Ursula's tentacle came loose, and she jerked Uma's braids back. She was startled, obviously confused, and Ursula laughed wickedly. It was the first time in the life that Uma had received something like a caress from her mother, and her mind could not process what had just happened. "And now you are doing magic."
Uma tried to put herself together.
"How do you know?"
"Oh, clam; I thought there would be a little more in that little head of yours, but apparently it's not like that, right? People talk and rumors spread. Does it feel good? The magic in every pore of your skin, making your body vibrate with pleasure." Ursula purred. "We were imprisoned here, far from who we truly are, but so much magic cannot remain inhibited for long. The end of the Isle of the Lost is near, and then you will feel the true power of your lineage. Although, for magic, you always pay a price. And the one that you'll have to pay you'll not like at all, so I propose a deal: I will tell you how to avoid it if you give me the necklace."
A deal.
Of course, Uma must have imagined it. She almost laughs at herself for having thought otherwise.
"There is no deal with you. I know the house never loses."
Ursula did not seem affected by her refusal. She gave a contemptuous laugh and left the kitchen.
"You learned very well, clam. I'm almost sorry for you. Almost."
When Uma returned to the Lost Revenge in the evening, after her shift at the Fish and Chips, the first thing she did was ask Desiree to put the earrings on her. Truth be told, Desiree was the best for it, she had already pierced a lot of guys on the deck and sometimes they even paid her for it. So the crew gathered on deck and Bonny brought two benches, a candle, a long needle, and rum.
"These are pretty," Desiree said, examining the earrings Uma had given her. "Where did you get them?"
The girl took a clean cloth, some rum, and began to clean the earrings to disinfect them.
"Harry gave them to me. He has a good eye, right?"
Harry took the bottle of rum Desiree had used and took a long drink.
"Well, what can I say?" He strutted, feigning modesty. "Only the best for the best captain."
Gil, Bonny, and Desiree laughed, but Gonzo and Jonas faked coughs while muttering "sycophantic." Uma knew they weren't serious, but she shot them a death glare that made both boys shut up, and Harry looked even more pleased.
"Well. Here we go." Said Desiree, who had finished running the needle through the candle flame. She took Uma's ear and pierced it with a clean, quick motion. She put the first earring on, and then repeated the procedure a little higher on the same ear. Uma didn't even make a sound of pain.
"Gonzo cried like a kid when I pierced him," Desiree scoffed. Gonzo protested offended.
"Of course I didn't! We were in the kitchen and Gil was cutting an old onion on the table."
Bonny patted him on the back; everyone was laughing as Gonzo continued to defend himself, claiming that it was all Gil's fault and saying that he would get pierce right then and there to prove the truth.
Desiree handed Uma a piece of mirror to admire how the earrings looked, and she must have to admit that she liked the way they fit. They were pretty and matched her hat. She just hoped Harry was right, and that they didn't end up wrecking this time.
It was past midnight, and Uma wanted to sleep. Shifts at Ursula's always left her exhausted, but they were nothing compared to having to plan a trip. Harry and she were still awake hours after the crew had turned off the lights and climbed into their hammocks (except Bonny, who had the shift on the Crow's nest), because they wanted to examine the map a little more.
The Isle of the Lost might seem small compared to Auradon, but it was actually quite large. Getting to the other side on the Lost Revenge would take them about four days, considering the stops they had to make to maintain the ship, and not counting unforeseen events. In the portion of sea between the island and the barrier there were some islets where they could stop.
"I heard two more ships are leaving tomorrow," Harry commented, continuing to check his navigation charts. "They weren't even real crews until yesterday, but they bought my father two old ships from his fleet."
"And do they know that the treasure is hidden in the other side of the Isle?" Asked Uma, lighting another candle to light. They were in her cabin; sheets, lists, and compasses strewn across her desk.
Harry bit his tongue as he drew another line on the map, a gesture that Uma found incredibly cute.
"Somehow they've figured it out."
"They will not make it. Also, the Lost Revenge and the Red Tempest together are terrifying enough for they to decide it's not worth the risk. Could you check this out?" She extended to Harry the travel plan that she had been making. Harry put the compass on the table and examined Uma's work, smiling proudly. He had taught her everything he knew about the ship, sailing and making routes. Uma no longer needed to ask him for advice, but she kept doing it as a way to show him that she cared about his opinion.
"It's perfect, captain." He loved seeing the way her gaze lit up.
"I know it is," Uma replied petulantly. Then her expression softened. "Go rest, Harry. I'll see you early in the morning."
Between the two of them they began to collect things to put them in the drawers so that nothing would be lost. The ship rocked gently, and before leaving Harry took a chance and put a hand on Uma's waist. She responded just as he expected, impatiently, and she tugged at the collar of his coat to pull him closer. Their lips met in a furious kiss that made Uma hold onto the doorframe so she wouldn't feel herself falling. Harry's taste was delicious, and Uma could smell his scent, mixed with a bit of sweat, and she didn't think there could be anything that would comfort her more.
"Or you could stay here tonight," she told him suddenly, the second their lips parted, and he tried to catch his breath. "No one will suspect. We fell asleep checking the navigation charts, right?"
"Right," Harry agreed with a mischievous smile. Uma loved the way the madness in his eyes seemed to change when he looked at her, turning into a look filled with reverence and longing in equal measure. His voice sounded hoarse too, as if he was trying to contain himself.
Uma closed the door and hurriedly pulled Harry towards her, searching for his mouth. She loved kissing him. She could do it forever and never be bored. Harry knew how to draw strange sounds from the back of her throat, stroking her lips in disbelief, as if he couldn't believe he was kissing her.
As they kissed, the night slipped away like the sand from a clock. Overcome by exhaustion, Uma sought Harry's lips for one last kiss and settled on his neck, hugging him with one leg, to fall asleep.
Daylight barely illuminated the sky when Uma ordered the crew to gather on the deck of the Lost Revenge to prepare everything. Harriet and Sammy had come on deck to verify that the navigation charts of both ships were aligned, and then they had returned to the Red Tempest. Both ships would set sail at the signal of the Revenge.
"Is everything ready?" Asked Uma. There was more noise and movement on deck than usual.
"All set, Captain!" Gil shouted from the Crow's nest. "The Tempest awaits the signal!"
Uma nodded at Harry in a silent order.
"The signal!" He ordered, as Uma headed for the bow to get a better view. The cold morning wind blew through her braids and she sighed. Although it was painful, Uma imagined what life would be like if she could navigate the world wherever she wanted. It would be so nice to get lost in the ocean. Ursula used to say that the sea was bigger than the sky. She thought of the blue of the sea, and then her mind wandered to another blue that she knew very well.
Gonzo and Jonas raised the flag with the Lost Revenge insignia. Soon Harriet's flag, a red one with a hooked skull, was raised on the mast of the Red Tempest.
The ship advanced on the rising waves, and Uma didn't look back.
If she had, she would have seen Captain Hook watching from the Jolly Roger.
Sorry for the mistakes, I think I fixed them, but I don´t know very well how to do the notes and spaces
