No one likes to be told that your dreams are out of reach and to give up. For an Uzumaki, that was an insult. Now if you actually did then you'd be filled with regret and loss. Ame felt those and much more when she was told the news.
For over a week she has worked everyday to learn medicine, hand to hand combat, to make perfect ramen, making meals, training, and studying. More than once Naruto came home to find his cousin asleep at the tea table with books, notes, and a cup of cold, half filled tea. He would sigh and go pick her up and put her to bed. He would discover dinner in the fridge with reheat notes. As well as his lunch for the next day along with Iruka's meal.
Naruto hated to see his cousin like this but he understood. Ame was working hard to become a ninja. So he would clean up the table. Stack all her stuff on one corner of the table, reheat his food, eat, then go to bed. That is until the day Shino and his team returned from their mission. They had to take the rare herb to the hospital to their client. Shino was nominated to give it to the doctor. She was seeing a patient so he waited outside. To anyone who passed by he seemed like he didn't care he was there. Truthfully he was focused on the patient and the doctor.
"Ame, I'm sorry. There is nothing I can do about it. You have no chakra. I can't make that just appear."
"You don't understand! I have to have Chakra so I can heal. I have to be able to help. I have to be able to-"
Her sobs break her sentence. After a second the clipboard drops.
"Ame? Ame!? What's wrong? I NEED HELP IN HERE!!!"
Shino just goes in and goes to Ame. He picks her up and lays her in the bed. The doctor sends him to get more help. Ame lays on the bed gasping as she holds the middle of her chest in pain. Soon help arrives, a nurse takes the flower and ushers Shino out. He stands in the hall staring at the door. He isn't sure how long he stood there. But soon it quiets down and the room slowly empties out. The doctor comes out and sighs. Shino goes to say something but a nurse comes over with papers.
"It's her heart!"
The doctor shushes the nurse.
"Sorry. It appears that she took extensive damage to it. She is running on only half of a heart."
Shino wanted to say something but the ramen guy appears and goes into a different room with them. He slowly walks down to the lobby with his hands in his jacket pocket. He had failed. His fingers brush along the cold butterfly comb in his pocket. Shino had failed and now she will believe that she has too. They both fail at reaching a goal.
Ame lies asleep dreaming of better things. The heart monitor is the only sound in the room. Beep...beep...beep...beep. She was alive but how long with her frail heart. Naruto turns as a ninja calls his name. He takes off running to the hospital at the sound of the news.
