Emily has been keeping in contact with the team since she left for London. JJ, Garcia, and her had ladies nights over the skype and other platforms when they had the chance. The only person that she hadn't heard from is Spencer and while that wasn't surprising, it still upset her.
It's early in the morning for Emily when JJ calls, which means it's pretty late for JJ, immediately making Emily a bit worried.
"Hey JJ is everything okay?" she asks as she answers.
"Not really," JJ replies and Emily can hear the sadness in her voice and can tell she's been hurting.
"What happened? Is everyone okay?"
Physically yes for the most part, although Spence got shot in the arm but it's fine. But mentally and emotionally? Not at all. So since you probably didn't know, Spence had been together with a woman named Maeve who was a geneticist. But they hadn't been able to meet in person, they just had phone calls because she had a stalker."
Normally Emily would be annoyed at having to talk about people Spencer was dating but she quickly realized this story was not going to have a happy ending.
"So the stalker kidnapped Maeve and taunted Spencer, who was barely keeping it together. But eventually we figured out it was a former student, named Diane Turner, who had gotten her thesis rejected by Maeve and found where she was holding Maeve. Spence went in unarmed and without his vest in order to talk down Diane.
"JJ is Spencer actually okay?"
"Ya he's alive and not doing alright but it's hopefully going to get better soon. So, anyway, Spence was doing well and had convinced her that he loved her, not Maeve. This was also the first time he had seen what Maeve looked like as well. But something happened and Diane snapped and Spence got shot while trying to get the gun from her and we made it into the room when Diane was holding a gun to Maeve's head. But then she lost it and killed both herself and Maeve by shooting herself in the head. The bullet went through her skull and then into Maeve's.
"Oh. Oh my God."
"Spence was right there. All of us watched it happen. But he was the closest. It was horrible Emily. He pretty much laid in the pool of blood next to her til we got him up and outside. And he hasn't spoken to anyone or even left his apartment. The best we got was him knocking to let us know he's at least conscious. I was thinking maybe you could try and talk to him?"
"JJ-"
"I know that you guys haven't spoken since the breakup. And I know that's almost a certainty he won't answer or respond. But I also know that you both still care about each other and I think it'll do some good. So can you please just try?"
"Fine JJ. I will."
"Thank you Emily," she says and they talk a bit more before ending the call.
From then on Emily calls and texts Spencer at least once a day, never getting any answers or responses. She assumes he doesn't even listen to her voicemails or read the texts. But she keeps doing it, makes sure he knows she'll be there for him. She knows they'll see each other again sooner, rather than later, but no one expects what causes her reunion with the team.
JJ is kidnapped, along with Mateo Cruz and the team is hitting wall after wall in their attempts to gather information and find her. By this time Spencer has recovered enough to at least be able to act like he's alright when around others, and isn't as deep into his abyss of despair as he was before. Hotch calls in a friend in order to help them find her. Spencer and Morgan are talking at the former's desk when Hotch interrupts them.
"I wanted to let you both know that I called in someone who can help us find JJ," Hotch states bluntly.
"Who?" Spencer asks.
"Hey guys," the voice of Emily Prentiss says, and Morgan and Hotch quickly go over to hug her and say hi.
But Spencer stands there, frozen, a mix of shock, panic, and despair on his face, which everyone quickly notices, as their smiles all fall.
"Hi Spencer," she says and he opens his mouth to respond but no words come out.
"Hotch, Reid and I are gonna go look into a few more files," Morgan quickly interjects and for confirmation looks to Spencer who quickly nods.
Hotch nods his approval and Morgan quickly ushers Spencer out of the room.
Noticing the hurt in Emily's expression he says,"I know it's not what you'd hoped for, but even if it hadn't ended how it did, Reid's has a rough few months."
"Ya I know, but it doesn't make it hurt any less," she replies before adding,"Anyways, this isn't the time. Let's find JJ."
Meanwhile Morgan and Spencer are talking in another room.
"Kid, you gonna be alright? I've never seen you completely freeze like that." Morgan tells him.
Spencer lets out a deep breath and says,"Yeah, I'm fine. Just wasn't expecting to see her. But I'm fine now."
"Alright, but if you need to get out again let me know okay?"
"Okay. Thanks Morgan."
"No problem kid."
The team works and works and eventually finds JJ and Cruz and successfully rescues them. Later that night everyone goes out to a bar for a get together, even Spencer. He avoids Emily for most of the night, bouncing between all the members of the team, but mainly with Blake, Morgan, and JJ.
Emily corners him as the night is drawing to close.
"Hi Spencer," she says, making him noticeably wince.
"Hi," he replies, avoiding her eyes.
"Do you have a bit so we can talk?"
"Um actually no I really have to uh go home," he says and then almost sprints out of the bar.
The next day the team is off and later in the evening Spencer hears a knock at his door, assuming it's probably JJ. He's surprised to see Alex Blake standing there instead.
"Hi Spencer. Can I come in?" she asks to which he nods and asks if she would like anything, but she declines.
"Everything alright Alex?" he asks.
"Ya everything is fine, I just wanted to come see how you're doing and have a chat. So, I got to know Emily a bit the other night," she says and he nearly chokes on his coffee(yes it's the evening but Spencer loves coffee).
"Oh well that's uh good I guess."
"Uh huh. And I can see why you like her. She seems great."
"She is."
"Hmm, that doesn't sound like someone who can't stand her or anything like that," she replies, raising an eyebrow.
"I don't really know how to explain it."
"That's okay. I've heard how you guys split up. Sounds like both of you said things you regret."
"I do regret it, but she's the one who left," Spencer says, tears beginning to flow as he sits with Alex.
"Yes I know. But she regrets it too. She's sent you voicemails and texts everyday for the past few months right?"
"Ya but it's just to check up on me. Everyone did it for a while after what happened."
"Yeah but she's still doing it. I think it's a little more than what you say it is."
"I don't know Alex. I can't go through it all with her another time just to lose her once again. Just to lose her like I lost Ma-"
"I'm gonna stop you before you start spiraling more Spencer. What does your heart tell you? Because you spend too much time only listening to what that brain of yours is saying, and nothing else," she says, standing up to leave,"And I also think maybe you should start listening to those voicemails too."
"Okay. Thank you Alex," Spencer says and she smiles and nods before heading out.
Spencer sits there for a while before grabbing his phone and finding the first voicemail from Emily. He just stares at it before closing his eyes and hitting play.
