THE WISE WOLF CHAPTER 7:
Jacob's POV:
Adi got up with her plate. I watched her take a few slow steps towards te kitchen before I saw her slightly wobble. She started falling backwards and I leapt up and caught her. I scooped her up into my arms and set her on the couch.
"What happened?" Sam asked me since his back was towards Adi when she fell.
"I don't know she just kind of stumbled before she passed out." I told him.
"Adi, come on. Wake up. Please." I said to her. She did not wake up, but just laid there. I could here her heartbeat. It was still strong enough that she did not need to be taken to the hospital. I couch opposite to Adi and watched her until I fell asleep.
Adi's POV:
I could hear snoring. I tried to open my eyes. Eventually I got them open, but it was dark in the room I was in.
"Wh-Wher-Where am I?" I stuttered out. I saw Jacob hop up. He was the one snoring, but apparently I woke him.
"Adi! Are you ok?" He asked, clearly worried.
"Yeah, I feel fine." I told him which was the truth, I felt fine now.
"You passed out. I didn't know- I just- You worried me. I didn't know if you were ok. You've been asleep for almost 8 hours." He told me.
"Don't worry I'm fine. I just over did it I guess."
"Ok."
"Here, come on. Lay with me. I can probably sleep for another few hours." I told Jake.
Jacob laid down on the couch and pulled me into his chest. His warmth overtook me, and I fell asleep within a few minutes.
Burning. Coughing. My throats on fire. Scorching hot liquid runs down my throat. I can barely breathe. My whole body is burning and freezing. My lungs are squeezed together. Suddenly the burning stops. The sky is grey. The clouds are red. Suddenly I feel pain in my ribs. Harsh pain that makes me double over panting on the ground.
"Adi wake up! Wake up! Its just a dream!" I heard a voice.
I snapped upright and saw Jacob next to me.
Sam was also in the room and I could see some light outside, so it must be late enough for the guys to be up.
"Are you alright Adi? You scared us all yesterday." Sam asked me.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Just have not been sleeping well." I told him. "I did too much yesterday, but I'm ok today."
"Ok, I'm glad." Sam responded
Adi's POV:
Its been two weeks since Harry died. Bella came back, still human. I haven't seen Seth or Leah since the funeral as Sam said they were still dangerous to be around. They were under strict watch at the funeral, but Sam thought it would be cruel to not allow them to go at all. I rolled my eyes at that comment, but let him be. I was still in school, and the guys showed up most of the time. I was still failing English and Spanish.
The boys and I were doing work for school while Sam and Paul were teaching Seth how to patrol.
"What's the square root of 32?" Jacob asked to everyone.
"Don't you have a calculator?" Jared asked him.
"Nope left it at home." He responded. "Do you have a calculator?"
"Nah"
"Its 5.657 rounded." I told them.
They both looked at me like I was crazy.
"What?" I asked them.
"You don't have a calculator either." Jared said.
"So?" I asked. Maybe I could play it off. I'm probably the only one that knows the square root of 32 off the top of my head.
"But you knew that." Jake said.
"Yeah" I responded.
"How?" Jake asked.
"Extreme photographic memory. Also, I'm just really good at math. Numbers make sense." I told them.
"Pretty cool." Embry said. He was still focusing on his history homework.
"Embry, what are you working on?" I asked him. I knew a lot about history too.
"Greek mythology project. I'm trying to figure out the origin of Arachne, but its not in the book." He responded. I flinched at the name.
"Oh, I know that story. Arachne was a human who thought she could weave better than Athena. Athena invented weaving and the stupid mortal that Arachne was still believed she was better at it than Athena. Arachne challenged Athena to a weaving contest. While Athena wove images that depicted the greatness of the gods, Arachne wove ones that showed the wrongs and foolishness of the gods." I scoffed at the end. "In the end Athena had to admit it was a tie, as Arachne was a good weaver. However, she was still enraged at how the mortal disrespected the gods in her tapestry, so Athena humiliated her. Arachne tried to kill herself, but Athena pitied her, turned her into a spider to allow her and her descendants to weave forever. Now spiders hate Athena and her children as well as humans for ridiculing Arachne."
"Really. Thanks. Its pretty impressive you know that off the top of your head." Embry told me.
"Of course. I like Greek and Roman mythology a lot. I studied it at school in New York." I told him. Ha studied it. More like lived it.
We all went back to our work. A few questions were asked once in a while. I moved onto doing my English homework. It was a practice reading comprehension test. I managed to get through the first sentence and was now working on the second.
"Ugggghh" I groaned and banged my head on the table. The guys looked at me.
"I'm already failing English. Doesn't matter if I do this anyways." I took the paper dropped it on the table and stormed off towards my room.
I heard the door open a few minutes later.
"Adi, are you ok?" Jacob asked me.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Why wouldn't I be?" I asked him.
"You just stormed out of the living room and are failing English." He stated.
"So?" I asked him.
"Why?" He asked.
"I stormed out because I was frustrated at my English homework. I'm failing English because I don't do the homework." I told him.
"Ok" He sat down on my bed next to me. "Why can't you do your homework?"
"I have frickin dyslexia! Ok! Is that what you wanted to hear. That I'm screwed up. That I can tell you the square root of most numbers off the top of my head, but can barely read a sentence in English!" I tucked my knees towards my chest and just sat there. Jacob grabbed me and pulled me towards his chest.
"You're incredibly smart Adira. I don't care if you can read or not. You've maaged to be smarter than all of us combined without being able to read. Its impressive."
We just sat there for a few minutes before I whispered, "Thanks Jacob."
I pulled away from him and gave him a hug. "Come on. Let's go back out there. I think I can handle it."
"Do you want me to help you with your English homework?" He asked me.
"Nah, don't worry about it. I'm already failing and if I start trying she will expect too much."
He laughed, "Ok, if that's what you want."
Jacob's POV:
Sam, Paul, and Seth were patrolling while we all worked on our homework in Emily's living room.
"What's the square root of 32?" I asked.
"Don't you have a calculator?" Jared asked me.
"Nope left it at home." I told him. Maybe he had a calculator "Do you have a calculator?"
"Nah" He responded to me.
"Its 5.657 rounded." Adi spoke up. I'm pretty sure she does not have a calculator either.
"What?" She asked us. We were giving her a weird look.
"You don't have a calculator either." Jared said.
"So?" she said.
"But you knew that." I stated. How did she know that? It seems impossible.
"Yeah" She responded.
"How?" I asked her.
"Extreme photographic memory. Also, I'm just really good at math. Numbers make sense." She told us with a shrug and turned back towards her paper.
"Pretty cool." Embry said. I forgot he was here, he was so focused.
"Embry, what are you working on?" She asked Embry.
"Greek mythology project. I'm trying to figure out the origin of Arachne, but its not in the book." He responded. I saw Adi face flash to scared for a brief second before it switched back to calm. She went on to explain the story of Arachne off the top of her head. She summarized it, but something in me knew that she would have told us more details about it if we wanted.
"Really. Thanks. Its pretty impressive you know that off the top of your head." Embry told her. I agreed with that.
"Of course. I like Greek and Roman mythology a lot. I studied it at school in New York." She told him and laughed a little.
We all went back to our work. A few questions were asked once in a while. I was still working on my math homework.
"Ugggghh" I heard Adi groan and drop her head to the table.
"I'm already failing English. Doesn't matter if I do this anyways." She said angrily and got up and stormed off down the hall.
"Ok..." Jared started.
"I'll go talk to her." I told them.
I walked into her room.
"Adi, are you ok?" I asked her. She was just laying on her bed staring at the ceiling.
She sat up and responded, "Yeah, I'm fine. Why wouldn't I be?"
"You just stormed out of the living room and are failing English." I told her softly.
"So?" she said. It was not rude.
"Why?"
"I stormed out because I was frustrated at my English homework. I'm failing English because I don't do the homework." She told me. Ok now just to figure out why she can't do the homework, then I can help her.
"Ok" I said and sat down next to her, "Why can't you do your homework?"
She looked at me for a second before she started talking. She was not yelling really, just talking a little loud. "I have frickin dyslexia! Ok! Is that what you wanted to hear. That I'm screwed up. That I can tell you the square root of most numbers off the top of my head, but can barely read a sentence in English!" She tucked her knees towards her chest.
I grabbed her and pulled her towards me. "You're incredibly smart Adira. I don't care if you can read or not. You've maaged to be smarter than all of us combined without being able to read. Its impressive."
We just sat there for a few minutes before I heard her whispered, "Thanks Jacob."
I smiled, then she gave me a hug.
"Come on. Let's go back out there. I think I can handle it." She spoke.
"Do you want me to help you with your English homework?" I asked her. She helps all of us so much, I just want to be able to help her too.
"Nah, don't worry about it. I'm already failing and if I start trying she will expect too much."
I laughed at that. My teachers expected very little of me now too. "Ok, if that's what you want."
