Darkness

Persephone loved the darkness growing up. It was a seed buried in soil, waiting patiently to sprout, it was the end of a long day of harvesting with her mother, and it was the comfort of closed eyes before sleep.

Hades offered her all that and more when he made her his offer of marriage, to become Queen of the Underworld, queen of the sacred darkness, of shades, shadows, and all that was buried.

But the wall blots out the view past Hadestown, its darkness so thick and consuming that she can barely see the shades attending to it even in the unnatural neon lights above.

With the knowledge that comes with age, Persephone now knows that not all darkness is welcome.
