Bella
"Well, thank you for your time," Bella said numbly while rubbing her temple. Everywhere she looked for a new job there seemed to be a dead end. It was a numbers game. She just had to throw her resume at enough places. One of them had to be desperate enough to take her. She was coming to the end of the third week of job hunting, and still, there was nothing for her. It was tiring to see the eyebrows raise every time hiring managers realized that she had been a violin soloist. They wondered why she stopped, they wondered why she needed money, they wondered why she was sticking her nose in a place where her education nor experience fitted.
Bella knew that she was choosing jobs that payed much higher than what she had the education for. She just thought maybe she could fake her way until she learned the needed skills, just like how she could go to many auditions and later actually learn the piece. The culture shock was real. She couldn't dazzle a person with her violin skills and then be granted a job that needed wholly different experience.
Bella let out an angry grumble and dialed Angela, a friend from her conservatory.
"Hey, Bella!" Angela's voice was startlingly loud. "I'm so glad you called I was worried sick!"
"Why," Bella asked, scratching her head.
"You disappeared for like three months after your last gig! I was about to contact the police because you didn't call but I decided that you were ok... but now I am not so sure as time went on. I'm not sure why I didn't go to the police now that's so strange of me."
Bella's stomach lurched as she finally registered that the date on her computer was indeed a whole hell of lot later than when she had played previously in the city. She couldn't even remember where she had played, only that now she was in Seattle and trying to stay afloat. Most of the winter was gone!
"Where are you now? Where were you?" Angela sounded like she was frantically pacing back and forth.
"I'm back in Seattle. I was ... wherever my last gig was."
"Oh my god you don't remember?"
"I remember, I remember. I just cannot tell you. Listen, I need help finding a job. I need money." An image of Maria's cracked lips flashed in Bella's brain.
"I could help you out, you know you can always come crash at my place if you need it."
"I am fine for now." She wasn't.
"Ok..." Angela was suspicious but not enough to press further.
"I just need to find something soon." She needed something yesterday.
Bella felt an unfamiliar twinge in her chest at Angela's offer. She was a loner by nature, with no known family to support her. Since her little escapade through hell, Bella felt that she had truly started feeling lonely.
Jasper hadn't shown up at all since their last encounter. Could it have all been some crazy delusion? Brains have a nice way of being cruel. They show an unreachable fantasy and then one is plunged back into an irrefutable reality. Bella couldn't believe the amount of times she had woken up and wondered if he was going to appear that day. He was a stranger! A supernatural one at that. Maybe she could safely categorize him as a delusion and go see a professional. A mental hospital might be safer than being out on the streets.
"I do think you need to switch up your strategy a little bit. I know you worked really hard with your repertoire and being a soloist, but I'm going to be honest. No one will care."
"I've learned that now," Bella laughed.
"You do have some experience waiting tables and volunteering. Slap that shit front and center and then talk about violin and stuff. If you can, look for some free courses and start to expand your skill set. I would definitely aim for more service industry jobs because you have experience there."
Bella wanted to gag at the idea of waiting tables. She had absolutely no tolerance for disrespectful people. Fired spectacularly was the proper word for what happened at her last job.
"I don't want to wait tables."
"Bells, you aren't in a position to be picky. I can send you some of the places I worked after college and be on the lookout for postings. I gotta go now, Henry is awake. Bella do call me if something is wrong, don't let your distrust in other people be the thing that stops you from having a roof over your head... again."
Bella heard one devilish scream from a child before the line went dead. She went back to scrolling mindlessly through job postings.
It was a little bit of time before she got a text from Angela.
hey, here is a retail place I worked for a little bit. nice people. Alice's phone number: 342-555-1717
Bella stared at the phone number for a little while before dialing.
"Oh Bella! I was waiting for you to call!" A very high pitched but soft voice answered.
"Did Angela get in touch with you?"
"I don't know an Angela. Listen, I have a job for you. We need a nice pretty girl to do a little of serving. Our clients are wealthy and respectful. You will just need to stand around and look pretty while I fit people."
"Erhmmm, what do you do?" Bella's brain became mush at the sound of the woman's voice. It was so... pretty. So pretty that the alarm bells in her head were drowned out by it.
"I am the creator of La Vampirica. Anyways, you're perfect for the job. I'll text you an address. See you tomorrow."
Jasper
Jasper angrily threw the man to the ground. There was great satisfaction to see blood running out of the corner of the bastard's mouth. Seeing their blood was the only time he could see the value in an Angel. It was shinier than any ruby in the mortal world.
"Give me a reason not to end you right now. You have betrayed me."
Something akin to fear flashed through the Angel's eyes. Jasper always found it funny that the only time Angels felt emotion was when they were at the end of their immortal tether. Usually, by his hand.
"I know why He spoke to the girl."
Jasper crossed his arms and put on his best unbothered face. Showing any care for her would be leveraged to its fullest extent. He placed his shoe on the Angel's stomach, ready to press where the back had been injured upon contact with the ground.
"And why did He speak with her?"
"He knows her potential," the Angel's tone was sly and evil.
"What potential?" Jasper pressed down in warning.
"The potential to change things as they stand. If you value the status quo, if you value the power you have over your dominion, stay away from her, Devil."
"He created her? He planted her?"
"I cannot say."
Jasper pushed down even more and waited for the Angel to stop coughing. What an old fellow, must have been in His inner circle, Jasper thought to himself.
"Tell me or this shoe will become a drill."
"On my existence, Devil, I do not know."
Jasper pulled a small gun from his waist pocket and shot the Angel swiftly in the head. God would take care of the rest.
I had been suspicious of him from the beginning. This mortal girl was too good for the mortal world, and speaking with the Angel made me even more sure that she was of the Divine, created from the same material as Edward Himself. She haunts my dreams fervently, that little Delilah. In them, she whispers and longs for me and I never have the strength to deny her. Angelic and ethereal, these visions do not allow me to rest. She is the first one that has made me feel truly damned.
If you are interested in Beta-ing this story pls say hi. Otherwise, thank you for coming back, and I will see you soon!
