Brooke wiped her eyes and thought to herself how old her child would of been by now.? What would her child look like.? Whose personality would he have.? She would never get those questions answered. She was beginning to wonder why she put herself through this at all every year.
Reopening the darkest most painful period of her life. But in a way it was healing for her. So she continued. Before allowing herself to be lost in thoughts and emotions.
She heard knocking at her front door. Brooke sighed deeply. Pulling herself together fast. She washed her face clean of tear stained make up. And took deep breaths to push down the urge to cry.
When she got to the front door and opened it she smiled at the sight of Lucas.
"You've been hard to get in touch with all day. Is there something going on.?" He asked.
"No. I just needed some time alone. Is that all you wanted.? To see if i was okay. Because there is no reason for you to stick around and hover. Look when i gave you my cellphone number. I wanted us to be able to be in contact. That doesn't mean my world. Revolves around you."
"Believe it or not. I had a life before we met!" Brooke exclaimed. Louder then expected.
Lucas was taken aback by this sudden shift in behavior. This is a verison of Brooke he hadn't met yet and he was unsure how to approach her.
"I'm well aware of that. We are keepers of moments and memories. We are just getting to know each other. But our life experiences and pain we endured isn't that different." Lucas replied.
She stared back at him. The expression on her face hardened.
"What the hell are you talking about.?" Brooke asked.
"I ran into you're friend Peyton. She came by the cafe. Introduced herself. I was grabbing dinner there with my sons and she told that it was about time she met the guy her best friend couldn't stop talking about."
"After she explained that today would be hard for you. She didn't go into more detail then that and wanted me to know that if i saw you to not take you're mood swings to heart. So i dropped my boys off at home with dessert and came over wondering if you wanted to talk.?" Lucas asked.
Brooke let out a frustrated sigh. Silently cursing Peyton. She doesn't bring up this day for a reason.
"Honestly it's none of you're business. I understand that you meant well coming by. Wanting to check in on me but i didn't invite you here. I don't need you to rescue me or to take care of me. Just go home Lucas. You have a family waiting for you."
"You drove over here for nothing." Brooke proclaimed.
"There is nothing wrong with needing support and understanding. Especially when you're hurting and feel out of control. I just want to be there for you." Lucas replied.
"I don't want you here! Leave!" Brooke shouted.
Lucas stopped pushing and looked to her.
"I'm only a call or text away." He stated. Before leaving the home.
Brooke closed the door behind him. Grabbed ahold of her car keys and drove over to the mansion her younger brother was staying in.
She had a key there was no point in knocking,
Kennedy raced over to her. Smiling shyly. Pacing around clearly nervous.
"Who were those people leaving my house in those expensive cars and darkened windows.? What exactly are you doing in this house i'm letting you stay in.?" Brooke asked.
"My friends. Came over to hang out and check out where i'm living. That's all." Kennedy replied.
"I'm giving you a chance to pull you're life together. Do not make me regret it. You fuck this up. I won't be there to help you out anymore." Brooke stated.
"I get it. I do. This is my last chance to prove that you're faith in me is worth it. I want you to be proud of me." Kennedy replied.
...
Brooke made her over to the local flower shop and picked up a bouquet of sunflowers. She drove over to the cemetary. Parked her car in the street and walked into the sacred space.
She paused when she reached the tombstone with the name she recognized.
Wes Davis
Beloved son
Brooke placed down the flowers. Brushing away the dead leaves and melted snow.
She swallowed hard.
"Happy birthday. You would of been 14 now. A teenager. You were such a gift to me. I didn't appreciate it. What being you're mom meant until you were gone. And i was forced to just go back to being me. I miss you everyday. I love you." Brooke said. Her voice breaking with emotion as she left graveyard.
...
Arriving back home to an empty house in exactly what she needed.
Brooke retreated into herself. Changing into her pajamas. Climbing into bed. As she replayed the day of her son's birth and the day he died which was only hours later.
She clung tightly to her pillow. As sobs filled the bedroom. At 18 ending up pregnant by the husband who somehow found money for her to get an abortion. Was not the life she planned. But pregnancy had changed her.
She was going to raise him on her own. Yet life was cruel and took him from her. Before he could experience her love. Her body was damaged from the birth. When the doctor told her she couldn't have children. She cried out of relief. She couldn't bare it. Going through such pain again.
