Best Kind of Surprises

Chapter 7

Mike and Andrea went back and forth on names, not knowing what ones they liked. Andrea's due date was getting dangerously close when they finally settled on Harlow Elizabeth and Micah Alexander. Christmas was also upon them and Mike insisted on decorating the house. Andrea was just all about nesting but she suspected Mike wanted a normal Christmas. He hadn't had one in years and even though there was some sadness missing their kids, Harlow and Micah gave them something to look forward to.

On Christmas Eve, Mike had been shopping and had returned home with dinner. Andrea was settled on the couch with a cup of hot tea, a warm blanket and a good book. Mike settled next to her and kissed the side of her head. He could be incredibly sweet when he wanted to be. She put her head on his shoulder and sighed.

"Still the Braxton Hicks?" Mike asked.

"Yeah. How was shopping?" Andrea asked.

"Busy. Dinner is ready when you are." Mike told her. He had his hand on her belly and at the moment, one of the babies was kicking his hand.

"Good. I am a little hungry." Andrea said. Just as she was about to stand up, she felt her water break. Dr. Spellman had decided to see if she would go into labor naturally, and sure enough, she was. "Mike; change of plans. We need to get to the hospital. My water just broke." Andrea said and Mike nodded.

"I'll get your bag and call the hospital." Mike said. While she waited, she put the dinner away and Mike helped her out to her SUV. The car seats were installed and ready to go, and they were completely ready.

Thankfully, when they got to the hospital, Dr. Spellman was already there and Andrea's labor was progressing normally, but because of Andrea's multiple health issues, she was prepped for a C-section. Andrea laughed when she saw Mike walk into the room wearing the pink scrubs that were standard in the maternity ward, even for the dad's to wear.

"Pink is your color. Looks great with your complexion." Andrea teased.

"Yeah, sure." Mike said. Just then, Dr. Spellman came in and everybody went to work. C-Sections were not painless and through it all, Mike was wonderful. Several minutes after it all starter, Micah was born first and put on Andrea's chest for a moment, and then Harlow arrived.

Both babies were perfect. A little small but they were doing just fine and were given a clean bill of health. Both Mike and Andrea were completely entranced by the babies. Finally, Andrea was settled in her room and was holding both babies when Mike sat down on the bed next to her.

"Merry Christmas." Mike said before giving her a long kiss.

"Merry Christmas to you too. Even if it wasn't quite what you had planned." Andrea said.

"Its way better then I could have planned. They are perfect." Mike answered as he kissed the top of Micah's head. The baby boy opened and closed his eyes in response.

"They are." Andrea agreed. She could feel Mike shuffling around a bit and was surprised when he pulled something out of his pocket. It was a ring box. "What's that?" Andrea asked.

"Little something I picked up while I was shopping. Call me a bit of a traditionalist, but I thought it was about time I make an honest woman out of you. Besides the fact of course that I love you." Mike said with a grin. All Andrea could do in response was throw her head back and laugh.

"I love you too. And I suppose you're right." Andrea said. She positioned Harlow to where Mike could put the beautiful ring on her left ring finger and then gave him another long kiss.

Even a year before, Andrea had never imagined getting married or having twins. She was still trying to recover from being injured at Mayport and being involved with Mike would have been impossible. Now, she couldn't imagine not having him in her life and Harlow and Micah were going to be what kept them both going in the years to come.

I'll do one more chapter on this because I want to feature them being married.
