A Study in Emerald: Silver Linings

Summary: "People don't get pauses like these very often. Some people never receive them at all...I did." Kagome looked at Draco, her cheeks flushed as she smiled up at him, the cold air was nipping painfully at her nose, but she didn't care. If there had been a clock nearby, it would have stopped. Occasionally, there were minutes that got extra seconds. Moments so precious the universe stretches to make additional room for them...these moments were hers.

"What's on your mind, Kagome?"
Returning to Hogwarts after Christmas holiday, Kagome looked carefully over her trolly. Holding her mothers hand, she was swaying it back and forth, completely lost in thought. "Was Dumbledore a Gryffindor?"
"...a Gryffindor? No, he was a Ravenclaw. Why do you ask?"
"Then why does he blatantly spoil the Gryffindors?"
Rai frowned, "spoil? Would you like to clarify?"
Shaking her head, she didn't want to be that girl who ran home and cried to her mom. "I'd rather not."
Sighing, Rai stopped walking and tugged at her daughters hand a bit, turning her to meet her eyes. "I can't say what Dumbledore is thinking, however, you shouldn't fault him too much. He is only human, Kagome. We are all prone to make mistakes, even in our infinite wisdom. I will add, that while his actions may not make sense to you at the moment, Dumbledore does tend to think in a more complex manner than most. That's what so many think he's mad." Thinking carefully over her next words, Rai gave her daughter's hand a squeeze, "is his favoritism most notable with the Potter heir?"
'Heir?' Kagome was shook at the word, like Potter was some heir to a famous Pureblood line. 'Wait, is he? I know his parents were both magical, but his mother was a muggleborn from my understanding...but the Potters? Were they a powerful family like the Malfoys and the Blacks? Is that even possible?'
"Kagome?"
Pulled from her thoughts, she looked up into her mothers misty blue eyes. Those knowing blue eyes. "I... he lets Potter get away with numerous things that any Slytherin would be punished for."
Her mother's eyes peered curiously past her before meeting her daughters again, "those who believe in prophecies are often the cause of their coming to being. I've told you before, the Dark Lord met his destiny on the road he'd taken while trying to avoid it. Dumbledore is the opposite. He's not trying to avoid a prophecy, he's trying to see to it that it comes to pass." Her eyes gave a subtle blue shimmer before catching her daughters understanding stare. "Forget about Dumbledore, and forget about Potter. These will be the best years of your life, Kagome, so make them count."

Looking through the compartments, Kagome stopped at a familiar face. "Nott? Have yo-"
"He's outside talking with his mother," not bothering to conceal the roll of his eyes, Nott moved over so that she had a place to sit. "I don't know what you see in him. He's such a prat."
"Aren't you two friends?!"
"Sure, but that has nothing to do with what I said." He returned to the book in his hand. Almost as soon as Kagome settled beside him, the compartment door opened and Draco came strolling in with a huge grin on his face. "Malfoy, you look positively devious, what Gryffindor have you managed to traumatize so soon into our return?"
"Longbottom,"
"Too easy," Kagome smirked, "you should set your eyes on a harder mark. The twins, perhaps?"
Draco raised a brow at that, "I actually quite like the Weasley Twins. I can't be the only one confused about their placement." Pulling out a book from his trunk before placing it atop the racks, he sat down comfortably across from Nott.
"Reading, Malfoy? Are you sick? Dragonpox?"
Draco kicked him in the shin, not hard enough to actually hurt his childhood friend, but hard enough to get the point across. "It's..." he blushed, "actually interesting. Also, I'd like to point out that you and I are tied academically in our year."
Nott sneered, "tied, second to a Mudblood!" He shook his head and turned his attention away from the undesirable topic. "So that book, what's it on?"
"Plays! That is, Quidditch Offensive and Defensive Game Play Strategies and Tactics! It's all put together by a student from some years ago."
Kagome smiled, 'so he really did like it!'
"Anyone we would know?"
"Mm...no, the book has an extensive translation spell on it. He didn't go to Hogwarts, from my understanding." Draco's eyes wandered to Kagome who dropped her eyes a bit to avoid his. Though she gave a barely noticeable nod, she didn't say anything.
"How'd you get it?"
"It was a gift,"
Draco didn't specify. Though, this only caused Nott to become more curious than he'd been before. See, he knew his friend, normally, he'd brag about who'd given it to him. That he wasn't giving a name, it meant that he didn't want to drag attention to the gift giver. Pointedly, Nott glanced at the curiously quiet Kagome and smirked. Really, were they even trying? It's not like the two were dating, he knew that they were just friends, but Merlin were they an awkward duo to watch! "Well," Nott chuckled, "whoever got you that book must have really cared enough to pay attention to the things you like." Withholding a knowing grin, he wondered why he got such a thrill watching her cheeks glow in embarrassment? He was a Slytherin, but she was also such a Hufflepuff. It was laughable! That Draco was so keen on her was even more interesting.
"It's no secret that I like Quidditch," Draco argued, turning a page of the book while trying to focus on what was in front of him.
"True, but that's not just any Quidditch book. Isn't it more of a book to better your Quidditch skill? The person who gave you that book, knows you'll be trying out for the Quidditch team next year. This person must also know how badly you want to beat Potter. From here, I can tell that those aren't your average tactics. Nothing like the Rowntree Counter or Woollongong Shimmy."
"D-did you guys enjoy your Christmas holiday?!" Kagome nearly squeaked as she tried to alter Nott's attention from the book in Draco's lap. The blonde reading the book had taken in his words, however, and was now looking at the book with a new consideration. It wasn't that she was paying so much attention to him, she just... wanted to see him succeed. Her father was a Seeker at Mahoutokoro School of Magic, and had even played for the Toyohashi Tengu's. This was his gamebook, his cheat sheet, so to say. Or at least... that's what her mom said. She hoped it would help Draco to read about some other tactics outside of the normal ones.
"Great, the Nott Soiree is always a delight," Nott didn't sound as if it had been all that great at all.
"Don't force yourself." Draco muttered, turning another page as his eyes followed the intricate illustrations.
"My mother does this every year, and I'm forced to make an appearance, but trust me when I tell you. I'd much rather be anywhere else than in the company of a bunch of old traditionalists. Not that I don't believe in the traditionalist view, but the conversations are quite drab to listen to."
Understandable, Kagome glanced at the door as it opened to reveal Zabini in all of his charm and charisma. Leaning against the compartment frame, he held out a hand, "were you guys aware that Greengrass's mom is trying to negotiate a marriage contract with the Malfoy's?"
Now that had to be distorted gossip. They were only eleven!

Me: Wow... they start discussing marriage early! Damn... I wonder how Draco feels about that. Actually, let's take a moment to consider how we'd feel. Finding out at eleven that your parents were even discussing the idea of marriage between another family's child. Like... excuse me, my life, you want to check yourself!? Oh, anyways. Here is chapter 7...Book.
