Friday morning, people normally love Fridays. No school for two days, staying home, sleeping in, going out with friends, partying. But not for Karolina. She hates fridays. More staying at home, more free time, which means more time to think, more time remembering. And more time with friends means more questions. School to her, means distraction, a way out. That's something that she had in common with her mother, even though she didn't know it. And probably if she knew, she'd deny it. The thing is, Quinn never talks about her past, because that's where it is, the past. That's where she's different from Santana. You see, Santana thinks that she can learn from her past. Many years of therapy got her there. She tells her kids stories about her teenage years, she teaches them not to be like her, because she's not proud of it. Santana matured a lot during the years, that doesn't mean she stopped being herself, which means she's still bitchy, gives nicknames to people, and has awesome comebacks, but now she's a better friend, more present, and sometimes nicer.
"Karolina!" Quinn shouted from downstairs "You have to get ready! Valerie's taking you to school from now on!"
"It would have been good if you told me before!" Karolina shouted back. Her mother always forgot to tell her things.
"Don't talk back to me!" Quinn responded.
"Fucking great" Karolina mumbled.
She finished getting ready, and went downstairs. She was already late, she ran towards the car that was already waiting for her. She heard a honk come from the car. She got inside the car, Valerie was listening to something Alex was saying.
"That sounds fun, Lex" Valerie said excitedly. Her brother was telling her what he would play once he got to Oliver's house that afternoon.
"Yeah! We're going to have so much fun! And uncle Jake is going to let me ride his scooter, and aunt Marley is going to make cookies…" The kid kept rambling on and on about what he would do that afternoon. Valerie tried to listen to everything he said, but her thoughts got the best of her. She wondered when she stopped being that happy kid that loved to talk, she wondered if she ever was. They both had different childhoods, Valerie lived her first years of life in a different neighbourhood, it wasn't even close to the luxury she had now. She wanted to protect her brother the best way she could, but even she knew that kids eventually grow up, and they will always get hurt, no matter how hard you try. Karolina was having some similar thoughts. She hated the man that made her brother, who was still a kid, lose that lovely inoscense. They were both so inside their thoughts, that they didn't notice they were already at Alex's school.
"Bye Lex!" Valerie shouted. The kid waved back.
They were riding in silence, but Karolina was curious. It wasn't any of her business, but she wanted, no, she needed to know.
"Why did you leave?" Karolina blurted out suddenly.
"What do you mean? I'm here?" Valerie was playing stupid, and she knew it, but she was tired of responding those questions, especially form the paparazzi, journalists and fans.
"What happened that day that made your mother send you away?" Karolina asked annoyed.
"Okay first of all, my mom didn't 'send me away', you make it sound like she's a bad mother. And second, this is none of your business Karolina" Valerie said, mad. She knew she would have to talk about it one day, but she didn't expect it to be today. No one had asked her yet, they all made their own assumptions, at least Karolina had the decency to ask her about it. She had snapped at her, and now she regretted it "look, I'm-" she was interrupted.
"No, I'm sorry. I was out of place-"
"No Kar-"
"I'm sorry, just forget it" Karolina said harshly.
The rest of the ride was silent. Both of them were really uncomfortable. Karolina was kind of mad that Valerie had snapped at her like that. They weren't exactly friends, so she was out of place, but curiosity was killing her. The latina on the other side was thinking she had lost all her chances of friendship or something more with Karolina, and she was mad at herself. I always ruin everything. Those were both of their thoughts.
The rest of their school day went normally. But then it was time for Valerie to take Karolina home. Both of them were dreading that uncomfortable moment. Karolina walked up to Valerie, who was putting away some books in her locker.
"Hey" the blonde said in a small voice.
"Hey, you ready to go?" Valerie asked her
"About that, Audrey offered me a ride, so I'm gonna go with her" Karolina said. Actually she had asked Audrey to take her home, and when she did Audrey was more than happy to get her away from the latina.
"I live next to you, let me take you" Valerie tried to make sense with her. The truth is the brunette wanted to apologize to her, and the only way to do that was being alone with her.
"She's gonna take me" Karolina insisted.
"Kar, if it's about this mor-" she was interrupted.
"It's not, just forget about it" the blonde said walking away.
"Fucking great" Valerie muttered, bumping her head against her locker.
When Karolina asked Audrey to take her home, she hadn't expected it to be even more uncomfortable than sitting in a car alone with Valerie.
"So, why aren't you with your new best friend?" Audrey asked teasingly.
"She isn't my 'new best friend', she isn't even my friend" Karolina explained.
"Well, you sure looked friendly" Patti muttered.
"Patti, be nice" Audrey scolded "but she's right"
"She isn't, and I still don't get why you hate her so much" the blonde said.
"Yeah, well I don't get why you like her so much…" Karolina tunned off all of the talking the rest of the drive. She truly regretted riding with her.
Karolina entered her house a little later than usual, the ride with Audrey took longer than expected, she stopped for food in the middle. When she closed the door she heard her mother shouting. That wasn't usual, she only heard her shout when she was arguing with her father. She walked a little further to look for her mother. She was talking on the phone. Now that makes sense, Karolina thought. She was talking to Puck on the phone. Karolina was surprised she even answered. Where's James? She ran upstairs looking for her brother. She opened his door and entered his room. He wasn't in there. Where the hell is he? She opened her door, and found him in a corner with her headphones on. She quickly came near him, and sat next to him. He had his knees up and was hugging his legs. He looked scared. Karolina grabbed the headphones from his head, and looked at him in the eyes.
"James, it's okay" she softly said.
"I'm sorry" he muttered repeatedly.
"It's not your fault, you didn't do anything wrong" she said while hugging him. Quinn shouts were getting louder. She had to get him out of there, he would have a panic attack. Or maybe we'll both have a panic attack. Karolina thought. "Come on" She said, getting up.
"Where are we going?" he asked confused.
"Don't worry"
The Lopez family was having a movie night. Unluckily for them, it was Alex's turn to pick a movie, and as expected, he chose a kids movie. Santana was sitting there wondering what Quinn was doing. Valerie was having similar thoughts, she wanted to apologize to Karolina for being a jerk. Jayden on the other side, was having other thoughts. How the hell does a truck talk? Luckily for the three of them, the doorbell saved them.
"I'll go!" Jayden, Valerie and Santana said at the same time, but Valerie stood up first and ran to the door. She opened the door and found someone she didn't expect.
"Karolina?" she asked confused "what're you doing here?"
"I need help" she said softly. Valerie then noticed James in front of her.
"Come in" she moved aside to let them in. "James, do you wanna go with Em and Alex?" she asked him. She wanted to help them, but needed to calm down Karolina for that first. He nodded, and left. "Mami!" she called Santana.
"Who was that at the door?" Santana came running in. "Oh, hey kid"
"Can I talk to ya for a second?"
"Sure" They moved to talk aside.
"Okay, they don't look good, so Imma take care of her, Jay takes care of James and you go see how Quinn is doing"
"Okay, you sure you can take care of all of them?" Valerie nodded "Okay, if you need anything call me or Quinn"
"Okay"
Santana was currently knocking on Quinn's door. She was scared for what she was going to find. She was scared for the kids, she was scared all of this was too much for them. Being a mom made her want to protect her kids, she didn't want anything bad to happen to them. She tried so hard to protect them, but she just couldn't, and apparently Quinn couldn't either. Nobody can. The door opened forcefully.
"What are you doing here?" Quinn asked. She had puffy red eyes, and her face looked swollen. She had clearly been crying.
"Your kids are at my house, I wanted to see how you were doing" Santana mumbled.
"What do you mean they're at your house? They should be here, they were here" Quinn said frantically. Santana grabbed her by the shoulders to stop her moving.
"Quinn, stop. Stop. They're okay, I took care of that. Are you okay?" She asked. Santana saw Quinn's eyes, she had tears pooled in them. "Come here" she mumbled. She hugged her. Quinn was stiff at first, but then she broke down. "It's okay, it's all gonna be okay" She kept mumbling in her ear. She picked Quinn up and took her to the couch. They laid there for a couple of minutes until Quinn stopped crying.
"I'm sorry, you shouldn't have to deal with this" Quinn said, wiping her tears.
"I want to, besides whatever we have, you are my friend first. And you get to choose who you want me to be here. The person you're dating, or your best friend?" Santana asked.
"I just need you, I don't care how" she said, whimpering.
"And you have me, don't worry, you have me" she told her, softly.
"Thank you" Quinn kept crying.
"You don't have to thank me. Do you want to talk about it?"
"I actually do" the blonde responded shifted on the couch.
"Okay, you do it at your pace, princess" Quinn smiled at the name. "What? Why are you smiling?" Santana asked, confused but with a smile herself.
"You called me princess" She said dreamily.
"Does it bother you? I can totally stop calling you that if it bothers you. I can call you something else, or I can just call you Quinn-" the brunette started rambling.
"Stop! I like it when you call me princess, and you're cute when you ramble"
"Oh, okay. That's good. I'm about to ramble again, aren't I?"
"I think so, yeah"
"Well, what do you want to tell me?"
"Yeah. Okay, so you of course know that I was married to Puck. ANd you of course know that I am now divorced, and the kids decided to change their names to only Fabray. And you also know that nobody heard from Puck in the last few months"
"Yeah, where is he?"
"Jail"
"Do you want something? Water, some snacks or anything?" Valerie asked to Karolina. The blonde hadn't said a word since they got to the brunettes room. "Do you want to tell me what happened?" the blonde just shook her head.
Valerie didn't know what to do. She didn't know how to deal with feelings. She normally doesn't have any, and when she does, she pushes them away. Karolina was thinking she should've gone to Mia's house, she knew how to talk to her. But something inside her told her that going to the Lopez house was a better idea.
"You know I had two moms," Valerie started saying. Karolina looked confused. "You asked me this morning what happened, why I went away. This story is much more complicated than what everybody thinks. The guy was not my boyfriend or stole my girlfriend. I didn't have depression because somebody broke my heart, and I didn't go crazy"
"You don't have to tell me" Karolina mumbled.
"I want to. I trust you not to tell anybody about it" Valerie looked at the shorter girl for reassurance, the blonde just nodded. "Good. My other mom was Brittany Pierce, at the moment Brittany Lopez-Pierce. They were in love, at least that was what everyone said. Brittany wasn't a person that could love like my mom did, like she does. Brittany was capable of loving many people at the same time. My mom didn't want to have children at such a young age, she was twenty-one, and still in college. But Brittany wanted it, so she did it" Karolina almost never heard her aunts and uncles talk about Brittany, only when she heard Rachel and Kurt gossip. Her mom never mentioned her, her father did sometimes. "They were already married, and my mom used all her savings to pay for the process. Brittany wasn't there for our birth, she said she was working. Your mom was in the room when we were born. She cut our umbilical cord. That's why I'm named after her, my mom didn't tell me that, I figured it out"
"Your name is Valerie, and her name is Quinn. How exactly does that work?" Karolina asked.
"My middle name is Lucia, Quinn's first name is Lucy. Lucia is Lucy in spanish. My mom chose middle names in spanish for all of her children. Well after that, Brittany was always working, and barely spent time with us. One day my mom came from work and found us crying. She was supposed to take care of us. But she didn't. My mom went looking for her, but she found her sleeping with someone else"
"Did Santana know him?"
"I don't think you wanna know who it was"
"Do I know him?"
"You do, and that's why I don't want to tell you"
"Please tell me"
"You sure?"
"Yes"
"Okay, she was sleeping with Sam"
"Sam, as in Uncle Sam?"
"Yeah"
"But Thomas was already born, and Mia too. How could he do that?"
"I told you you didn't want to know. That's not exactly the point. Well it kind of is. My mom was mad, of course. Things went badly, and Brittany left to Florida, to pursue dancing. The thing is, Sam actually got her the job, he helped her leave. She never came back. Never called, never wrote a letter, and never sent money. My mom struggled for years to get to where we are now. The story ended well, but not exactly. I fucked up, like I always do. I would like to tell you this part of the story later if it's okay with you?"
"You don't have to tell me at all"
"I want to, and I want to have somebody to listen, so you're helping me"
"Okay. Can I ask you a question?"
"Sure"
"How do you know all of this?"
"Well, at one point I started searching things on the internet, and Brittany appeared. I asked my mom about her, and she told me the truth, all honesty. I asked her to be honest with me, as she always is. She thought I had the right to know. And she wanted to tell Jayden, but he didn't want to know. She always talked to us with the truth. It was always us three, she protected us with all she could, because that's what mothers do"
"It should be" Karolina mumbled to herself. She thought Valerie didn't hear her, but she did. And she didn't comment about it.
Okay, I'm sorry I haven't been posting. School is crazy. I promise I will post more. And I am working on some new stories, But I'll try and keep this one updated. Next chapter, lots of Quinntana, and the story of the Fabray family.
