Chapter Seven- The Luthor Meets the Maelstrom

"Ugh…, I hate these types of places."

Lena Luthor found herself for the first time in a long while, attending another stuffy gala. Clad in a beautiful black dress, and holding a glass of champagne in her hand, she slowly drank, hoping that something exciting would happen.

A small envelope had arrived to her home, as she opened it to reveal an invitation to a gala being held at LexCorp. Her mother had stressed it was important for the Luthors to be seen together and in solidarity. The gala was also done for the rich and powerful to feel assured that things were going okay, that everything post-Incident was doing fine, and the city was healing. Of course, the gala was a place for the powerful and rich, not really anything else.

Lena scanned the large ballroom where the gala was being held, and she was proven right. It was nothing but a party full of rich, elitist snobs who hardly gave a damn about anybody; they were just here to mingle. However, there was one highlight of this gala that she never expected. And it seems, it took a Japanese delegation coming to the city to invest in it, that made something like this possible.

There were bowls upon bowls of fresh ramen being served and the smell was intoxicating and heavenly. A new restaurant specializing in ramen and fried foods had taken the city by storm, and people just could not get enough. She noticed a blonde-haired man marrying brother, noodles, and meat together in such a way, that he had a small crowed just enjoying the show. She had to do a double take as she actually saw people eating ramen, slurping noodles, enjoying the soup, actually having fun. Perhaps, she was too quick to judge. Maybe, people were capable of change.

She gently walked to where they were serving the ramen, and saw it was being served by a handsome blonde-haired individual. He had a smile on his face, as she took in his features. Spiky, shaggy blonde hair, sky blue eyes she could get lost in, and whisker-like birth marks on his face. His clothes were covering an obvious muscular physique. However, that is not what she truly noticed. She noticed his genuine smile as he proudly and happily served the guests bowls upon bowls of ramen, as they all sat and enjoyed a sumptuous meal.

She too was given a bowl and chopsticks, as she took a seat and took her first bite. As she ate, she swore a tear fell from her eye. This single bowl of ramen was so warm and comforting, it reminded her of a simpler time, of home. Of a time where she shared the best memories with her mother, and how they lived such a simple life of joy.

When she looked up, she saw the blonde reward her with a megawatt smile. For some reason, she wanted to caress his face, and kiss him senseless right then and there.

"It's okay, isn't it? Yeah, that happens to everybody. It reminds everybody of home."

Lena looked at him incredulously. "All right? This is amazing. What's the secret?"

The blonde laughed. "I am glad you like it. I am always improving the recipe. There is no real secret. Just hard work, patience, and love. That's it really."

"Anyways, I am glad you love it. I have to serve some more people. Do enjoy."

The blonde gently nodded his head, as Lena gave him a rare smile. She made a mental note to speak to this man later, as he disappeared into the crowd. As she returned to her meal, her good mood had soured by the arrival of her mother.

Lillian shook her head. "I cannot believe you enjoy eating that."

Lena gave her mother a glare. "You should actually eat… food, mother, instead of souls. Who knows, it could actually do wonders for you."

Lillian sighed, and responded in a gentle manner. "Must we fight, Lena?"

Lena was taken aback by her mother's gentle tone. Perhaps this day, she too could be civil.

"We don't have to fight, mother. We never had too in life. You just couldn't bother to see past your prejudices, and treat me like a decent human being, instead of second class, compared to your favorite child."

Lena did not want to say it like that, but she could not help stop the venom from creeping into her speech, as her mother sighed again.

"I am trying, Lena."

"Why did you want me to come here?"

"You may not believe this, but I do miss my daughter. And as for this gala, it is important for the both of us to be here. After the Incident, I poured much money into helping revitalize the city, attract investors and businesses to the city, and create jobs. In a long time, we have finally found something to celebrate. That's why I want us here, as a united front. I do miss my son, but I do not miss my daughter any less."

Lena's sour disposition softened, as she heard her mother's speech. Maybe, her mother was willing to be a better person. The least she could do was meet her halfway. After losing her biological mother, she did not want to lose more family. Perhaps, she too could make an effort. For some reason, she wanted the love of her stepmother.

As time at the gala had passed, the lights dimmed as they were being primarily focused on the stage. Her mother was the star attraction as she asked for the attention of every guest in the room. Lena snorted into her glass, this ought to be interesting.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I thank you all for coming here on this fine day. Years ago, National City went through a serious crisis, an invasion. Aliens came knocking on our doorstep and wreaked such havoc and chaos upon us. And on that day known as the Incident, our losses were beyond the count of grief. We all suffered deeply. Even…, my own daughter was not spared."

Lena narrowed her eyes, as some of the attention fell upon her, as she noticed her mother brush away a fake tear. She shook her head wondering what was going to happen now.

"Many of the rich and powerful chose to leave the city in the aftermath of the incident, and I do not blame them. However, I am prouder to see that many of you chose to stay and help out the city in its time of need. To that end, LexCorp donated much in terms of revitalizing the city, and to attract business and much needed capital. And I say, we all did phenomenally well."

There was a round of applause, as Lena faked-gagged into her drink. These people had no idea what they were doing at all.

"However, this gala is not just to celebrate myself or all of you for that matter, it is about something more serious and somber."

Lillian clapped her hands as the lights dimmed, and a large tv screen appeared. On the screen, people saw metahumans and the things they did. Banks were robbed, hospitals were attacked, there were dead bodies everywhere. Lena swore she could see her mother give a faint smile, as the people at the gala gasped in pain and sorrow.

"Do not avert your eyes, ladies and gentlemen, do not avert your eyes. This is what humanity is facing. First it is banks, and hospitals. And now, the body count has increased. Soon enough, they will be poisoning our children, and the skies will burn, and the city will crumble. Pay close attention. We are dealing with a scourge, unlike any other."

And then, the Tv screen played out the images of the Incident, all the chaos and bloodshed in full view, as three powerful individuals wreaked havoc all across the city as the screams of humanity could be heard, and the image of the dead leaving a deep mark upon everyone watching the screen.

Lena too, had turned her head away at the carnage. That day, was not a wonderful day, let alone for anyone caught up in the chaos that unfolded in the city. She still narrowed her eyes at her mother. Where the hell was, she going with this, she wondered.

"Understand this, ladies and gentlemen, that something is being done about all of this." There were pictures of metahumans being imprisoned and arrested by the police, which elicited a cheer from many.

"I assure you, that soon, one day, humanity will be free from this scourge. This world is a world for humanity, and humanity alone. Soon enough, we will send them back to where they came from. For our families, and for our loved ones!"

Lena shook her head in disgust, as her mother's speech had elicited a thunderous round of applause from the crowd. Lena scoffed. In her mind, people were like sheep; they needed someone to lead them. Only very few people could really think for themselves and think critically in the search for the truth. Did people not realize that there were good and bad people in the world? Of course, her mother would not show videos of atrocities committed on metahumans, it would not fit her narrative.

This is what she wasted her day for. She could have spent the day training, making the suit better. She was wrong, her mother was incapable of change. She could not help but say the next word that came out of her mouth.

"Bullshit." Lena did a double take, as she saw the same blonde-haired man, who uttered the same word as her. She never believed in coincidences, perhaps, this was fate that she would meet this man again so very soon.

The blonde-haired man walked towards her and extended a hand. "My name is Naruto."

Lena returned his handshake. "Lena Luthor."

"If its okay with you Lena, maybe we can talk some more?"

Lena scanned the room and found an empty table near the windows. They both walked towards their destination and took a seat.

Naruto decided he should be the first to speak. "I have to confess, I am glad to see that I am meeting the elegant and refined beauty that is Lena Luthor so soon. I thought I would have to wait very long for another meeting.""

Lena smiled gently. "Well, I do aim to please. However, I have to wonder why you are speaking to me. We Luthors do tend to infect others with are unpleasantness."

Lena noticed that something changed in Naruto's gaze. "People should only be judged by their deeds, and not their last name or circumstances beyond their control."

Lena was touched, feeling a sort of fondness for this man already. It was rare to see someone speak to a Luthor regardless. However, life with the Luthors had taught her to never take anything at face value in this world, and to question things and to be perceptive.

"I like the way you think. This gala is boring as hell. Maybe, you can liven up my night here."

Naruto cleared his throat, as he pulled out what looked like a piece of armor with LexCorp's faded logo on it, covered in dried blood. Lena's eyes widened as she swore she saw this armor before. This armor was worn by those used to harm innocent metahumans. Using Hope, she was able to learn things she wished she never learned.

Lena hardened her gaze. "Where did you get this?"

Naruto gave her a cheeky grin. "Oh, I know a guy who knows a guy."

Lena was serious. "Look, this is not funny. What you have shown me, in the wrong hands, this stuff could be nuclear, and it can burn a lot of people."

Naruto nodded. "I am sure it can. And I am sure there is someone, who would do whatever they could to make sure this never came out."

Lena gave Naruto a glare. "Hmph, you are speaking about my mother. She is many things I will admit, but she is not devil incarnate, and for you to imply that she is…"

Naruto held up his hands in a placating gesture. "I am not saying that she is. However, perhaps LexCorp is responsible for this in some way. And can you truly accept that your mother has no idea or inkling of this, that she is not responsible?"

Lena closed her eyes and groaned inwardly. It was possible that her mother had nothing to do with any of this, and yet, with her fervent dislike of anything non-human, could there be truth in this, she wondered. Her mother was very secretive and could cover her tracks with ease. She would not be able to get answers here. She would have to think on this further.

Lena decided to change topics. "Regardless of whatever you have shown me, why come to me? What could I possibly do for you?"

"Its simple. You have resources, and you can use those resources to help me find someone important."

Lena could not hold back the snarky tone she chose to speak with. "Let me guess, a woman?"

Naruto smiled, unaware and uncaring of her tone, as his own tone softened. "Yes, a woman. A tortured soul who is being hunted without just cause. A woman who is fleeing from her own demons, but is still pure at heart."

"Anyways, she really is a pure soul, and I believe she is in danger. I want to protect her, and keep her safe, because I love her, and I know she loves me."

Lena turned her head away, hearing all of this. She hated that she felt jealous over a woman that she did not personally knew, and a woman who was in danger. She longed for love, even after losing the ability to have children. She subconsciously placed her hand on her stomach, wondering if she would ever have the joy of feeling real love.

Naruto saw her sad state and was worried. "I am sorry. It seems I have touched a nerve. Forget about what I said."

Before Lena could say anything, an explosion had rocked the building as everyone started screaming. Individuals covered in armor and carrying weaponry were firing lasers at everyone, as the screams had started. Corpses had littered the gala, as Naruto moved Lena to a safer place. The Assailants attacked whoever they wanted, the wife of a husband, a girlfriend, a father, no one was sacrosanct.

Lena cursed her luck as she was defenseless without her armor, otherwise, she would have given these fuckers a great reply. She looked around and saw Naruto was no longer there. Bewildered as to where he went, she was suddenly lifted into the air and thrown across the floor.

The assailants began kicking and punching her, as Lena did her best to defend herself. They pressed a gun to her head, as the leader began to speak.

"Look at you fancy people, enjoying your parties and joys. How come we weren't invited? You all should pay for that."

The Assailant lifted Lena to her feet, as he pressed his weapon into her side, and gripped her hair, as he whispered nastily into her ear. "Don't worry darling. It won't be fast; it will be slow. I am going to take my time, and when you beg for it, you will have my permission to die."

Lena closed her eyes, as she remembered her loss and her pain. She had not survived all these years to end up a victim. She brought her heels down on the idiot's feet, as he grimaced in pain, and then turned around and backhanded him as hard as she could. She stood in the center, as they trained their weapons on her. If she was to die this day, she would go down swinging.

And, as if fate answered her call, a man emerged from the ceiling, as Lena was pulled away to a corner of the gala, covered in a small dome made of rock. And so, Naruto stood in front of the assailants, garbed in black, wearing a Pikachu Mask, as they laughed at him.

"This ain't the Comic Con, loser. Don't worry, the more the merrier I say."

Naruto grinned coldly behind his mask, as he unleashed a wave of killing intent. The Assailants saw themselves being murdered in gruesome ways, as a demonic Fox-Like entity lorded over them as judge, jury, and executioner.

One of the assailants pissed himself, as the rest of them tried to get their nerves under control. They targeted their guns and screamed, ready to unleash a world of hurt on Naruto.

"You never seen a Pikachu Mask before? Good. You get the honor…, of a 100,000-volt beatdown."

The Assailants screamed as they fired their weapons, brightly colored energy beams simply bouncing off Naruto, as he was covered in the lightning based-chakra. He yawned through his mask, as he casually sauntered over and unleashed violence.

With a grin, he ripped off an arm and leg, and through an assailant out of the building. He grabbed the other one and headbutted him, as the crowd heard a sickening thud. He lifted the second assailant, and broke his back, as he lay there unresponsive.

The other assailants rushed to his location, as Naruto formed a hand seal. Multiple clones emerged violently from the ground as they uppercut the assailants and sent them crashing through the walls. Using his superior speed, Naruto grabbed one of the Assailants, and formed another seal, as two walls of Earth were formed. He moved the assailant violently across the walls, as if he was playing pinball, and then shattered both his kneecaps, as he enjoyed his screams and sobs.

More lasers were being launched at Naruto, as he launched himself at them, as elbowed them hard, sending them into the wall, as they turned into a pile of broken flesh. The last assailant tried launching a punch at Naruto, as he screamed and covered his hand in pain.

"Mercy, please. Please…, show mercy…"

"Mercy? No, you are saying this because you are losing. You and your friends have taken the lives of innocents. Fools, you are going to have you finish what you started. Time has run out for you."

Naruto grabbed the final assailant, as he lifted him into the air with a roar and unleashed the Liger Bomb. The ground ripped itself apart, as furious winds and the power of lightning had reigned throughout the building. When the dust cleared, the final assailant was nothing but a bloody, unrecognizable, mangled mess.

Naruto could hear the groan of one of the attackers who harmed Lena. He pulled off his mask and wanted answers.

"Who the hell are you people? Who sent you? Why was this place a target?"

The man grinned, as a beeping sound could be heard. Naruto looked around in horror, as the beeping intensified. Naruto roared as he formed another seal, and a massive number of clones emerged, getting everyone to safety. Naruto ripped the dome covering Lena, and flew her out of the building, as an unholy explosion ripped through the building, causing untold chaos.

As Naruto looked on in disgust, he saw Lena looking at him in fear. He removed his mask, as Lena looked at him in awe and anger.

She rushed at him and began smacking him with her fists. Before she could get in another blow, he held her in his arms, and gently brushed his hands across her forehead.

"I am sorry, Lena. I will tell you everything. You are safe now, you are safe."

She slowly relaxed herself in his arms, as Naruto carried her to his home. She was going to get her answers, one way or another. And if what her gut was telling her to be right, her life was about to become a whole lot interesting.
