Everything felt numb, it was a pleasant change to how he had been feeling before, but he didn't deserve being numb, he deserved the agonising pain, he had to find Christopher.

One minute he was following the rescue worker the 2 blocks to the VA hospital, the next he was standing alone in one of the tents put up as a triage area looking tired at all the people, half in search of Christopher and half not knowing what he was doing. At one point a woman working there came by and he asked her if maybe Chris name was on her list of survivors found, he wasn't.

Eddie was holding Buck's hand, never leaving his side even though the doctors promised he wasn't going to wake up due to the sedation, but he couldn't leave him again. Eddie looked again amazed at the wonderful man who had sacrificed everything to protect his kid

"Your going to survive this, and then your coming home with me, I know Chris would love for you to come over, his Buck who saved him, so you just keep on fighting there Buck, you keep on fighting so you can return to Maddie and Christopher, so you can recover and return to the 118, you keep on fighting so you can return to me", the last bit Eddie felt tears going down his chin, but he meant what he said he needed Buck to come back to him, he knew he would never be able to repay him, but he was gonna work hard everyday to at least do an effort.

He was looking straight at Eddie, trying hard to explain to him how he had lost his son, how he had failed Eddie, that's when the world stopped making sense. He was sure he had heard Eddie breath out Christophers name before leaving him, of cause Eddie would leave him after realising what he was saying, but then he turned and for just a second he could have sworn he saw Eddie holding Christopher in his arms before Cap, Chimney and Hen got to him and his body gave in to the pain and exhaustion.

Buck was seizing, machines were going off, hospital staff running into the room pushing Eddie aside and out into the hallway. Eddie just looked at the doctors work on his best friend, unable to do anything but stare.

"Were taking him back to surgery, the drain we have put in has clocked up and we need to do some more boreholes to alleviate the pressure on his brain" the doctor hastily explained before running after the team that was already loading Buck into the elevator, Eddie picked up his phone and texted Chimney: "Buck is going back into surgery. Need you and Maddie back here. Eddie", after a minute he got a text back: "On our way", then he went back into the room to sit and wait for either Maddie and Chimney or news of how Buck was doing.
