[3 weeks later]

Bella was finding it hard to hide her small protruding bump, but she was going to announce it today anyways. She called her parents to come to the apartment, and her brothers. Stefan was even there because Damon needed him there. They were 15 weeks pregnant, and they were having a little girl. So Damon's intuition was right. They gave the pictures to Mason, and her phone, so they could try and do whatever police magic they had, to see if they could figure out who sent the pictures.

Caroline and Klaus were starting to have some sort of budding romance, that Bella found sweet. Klaus was very sweet with Caroline, and she was to him. He was recovered for the most part from his gunshot, but he was still riding the desk at the station until the doctor cleared him completely. College life was still scary on campus, but they had increased the police presence even more, and they were hopefully, going to be able to deter the shooter that shot Klaus. They were operating under the assumption it was the same person for now because there was no reason to believe that there was more than one.

Jasper came and leaned a shoulder against his sister's. She was standing in the kitchen getting something to drink. "Hmm. You've called a family meeting."

"I have."

"Is this about your clothes fitting too tight." Jasper asked lowly. His honey amber eyes looked at her, smiling.

Bella looked up at him. "You know."

"I'm very observant." Jasper said with a nod. "I'll feign surprise. Don't worry." He grinned and grabbed himself a drink and wandered back into the living room.

The door beeped and opened and Alice was there, Stefan right behind her. "Sorry we're late." She was flushed, which made Bella suspicious, but she didn't say anything.

Esme and Carlisle smiled, but Esme spoke. "Okay, we're all gathered sweetheart."

Damon ran a hand down Bella's back, calming her, because he could sense her nervousness.

She looked over at him and smiled. "Well. Damon and I have important news, and we wanted everyone we loved to be here."

Alice clasped her hands together. "You're getting married?"

Damon chuckled. "Not yet, but that's not far off," he said and looked at Bella smiling.

Bella nodded. "We're having a baby." She said, the air whooshing out of her, her nerves alive like fire.

Esme teared up, a smile coming to her face. "Are you serious?"

"Yes mom," Bella said softly, unzipping her hoody jacket, and revealing her tiny bump. "Um. I realize this is…very unusual or fast, or whatever everyone thinks, but…" she looked at Damon. "We really love each other, and we love our daughter already so much."

Esme's face was streaked with tears as she rushed to Bella, her arms going around her. "Oh, I'm going to be a grandma." She kissed Bella's cheek and then she was hugging Damon, kissing his cheek as well.

Carlisle smiled at his wife, but his eyes met Bella's. He was worried, yes, but he was happy for his daughter. She was young, but a baby would be a blessing regardless. He stood. "Bella, honey, I'm so proud of you. You've gotten a doctor, yes?"

"I have, Dr. Callahan, she's really nice. Very thorough."

Carlisle nodded. "I know her. She is exceptional." He smiled and walked over to his daughter, hugging her as Esme did, and kissed the top of her head. "You are full of surprises, but these are happy surprises." He said with a smile, and looked at Damon. "While most fathers would be upset that their daughter ended up pregnant before marriage, I'm not that type of father. We're not a traditional family by no means. Being a father is one of the most rewarding things that…will ever happen to you. Hang on to every memory, every moment." Carlisle's voice cracked a little, the emotion getting to him.

Damon nodded. "I understand." His voice was soft, and then he was hugging Carlisle, and Carlisle was hugging him back.

Alice cheered. "I'm going to be an auntie!"

Rosalie was smiling big. "Oh Bells, that's so exciting! I can't wait to spoil my niece with all the fluffy dresses, and hairbows."

Jasper laughed. "Well, she'll be highly protected, with four uncles." He winked over at Stefan who was smiling at his brother.

Edward was smiling wide. "I can't believe this. This is wonderful Bella."

Bella looked over at Edward, and went to hug him. "Thank you."

Edward's arms wrapped around her. "Of course." He murmured, and looked over at Damon. Of course.

The announcement went better than expected. Bella never expected it to be taken so well. Esme was talking about all the things that was needed for the new arrival. Anna was also around the same gestation of Bella, and Esme and Carlisle were letting the genders be a surprise. Fortunately, Esme had some healthy eggs that could be harvested, and so the twins that Anna was carrying, would be Esme and Carlisle's biologically.

Everyone was cheerfully carrying on conversations, and dinner had been ordered out by Doordash, so they could just continue to relax and talk.

Damon's phone rang, and he gave Carlisle an apologetic smile. "Hold on." He said and turned, answering the phone. "Salvatore."

"There's been a murder on campus, two. We need all available. Klaus is still on desk duty." Mason's voice came through, and Damon could hear the siren in the background.

"I'm on my way. Same MO?" He asked, as he moved towards the back of the apartment grabbing gear.

"Yes, and the shooter is pinned down. Bring your vest." Mason said.

"You have him in your sights?" Damon was appalled. He grabbed his vest, after snapping his belt on with and his holster. He rushed out of the bedroom, phone still to his ear. He motioned to Klaus, who got up. "Hold my phone." He said and Klaus did that as Damon strapped his vest on, POLICE written across the back and front.

"Yes, he's taken another hostage, Carol Lockwood, the Dean. He's insane." Mason said. "You're the only negotiator we have."

Damon nodded. "Okay. I'll be there, five minutes. Keep him talking." He hung up. "Klaus, I know you're on desk duty, but-"

"Got it. I'll gear up. I'll meet you there. Go go." Klaus said, and jogged to the bedroom he was still utilizing.

Damon looked at Bella. "Babe, I really love you, and I'm really sorry I'm missing dinner, and all the exciting stuff, but I really have to go, and please don't worry." He kissed her.

"I know I know. Love you. Please be careful." She kissed him.

Damon nodded, framing her face. "I promise I will come back. This is dangerous, I'm going to be honest."

"I know." Bella said with a nod. He kissed her again and then he was out the door. Bella blew out a breath, and looked over at her mom who was standing there worried. "He's going to be okay." She said, and rubbed a hand over her belly.

A few minutes later, Klaus emerged, vest on, and gun holstered. "Bella, I'll watch him. I don't know what's going on yet, but I will make sure he comes home." He said and hugged her, kissing the top of her head. "Don't sit and worry." He glanced over at Caroline, who stood and went to him, kissing him softly. "I'll be back." He smiled at her and winked. "Good evening everyone." He said and then he was gone.

Carlisle hated to see the worry on Bella's face. "He's going to do fine. Let's just sit and have dinner."

Edward looked at his sister. "Bells."

Bella looked at Edward. "I'm okay." She smiled. "He knows what he's doing."

Stefan nodded. "Damon is a good cop, Eddie. He'll be okay."

Edward nodded. "Yeah. I just wonder what all of this is about. He rushed out, so it's serious. Serious enough to drag Klaus out too."

"I'm sure it's just normal police stuff." Esme offered.

[Whitmore University]

Damon pulled up his lights blinding in the night. Mason and a bunch of other cops were there. "What's the situation?"

"His name is Atticus Shane. He seems to have cracked. He's a professor here at the University. He killed two girls, Mia and Sara. Both brunettes, both Freshman." Mason relayed.

"Is he saying anything?" Damon asked.

Mason nodded. "He said that he's not the one that killed the girls, the he was just there when he did it. That he begged him not to. The dude is a little insane. We were able to get his personal file from the dean's office. He's been working here for four years, and last year, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor."

Damon frowned. "He wasn't the one who killed the girls? Did he say who this other person was?"

"No, he won't give up the name."

Klaus arrived on the scene, getting out of his car, and walking towards the grouped people.

Damon nodded to Mason. "Catch him up. I'm going to go see what this guy wants." He said and walked off behind the tape. "Mr. Shane. My name is Damon Salvatore, I'm with MPD. How are you doing man?"

"Go away!" Atticus' voice was strained, hoarse, like he had been crying a lot.

"I can't do that man. I just want to figure out what's going on. You have the Dean. Is Carol okay?" Damon asked.

There was some silence. "I'm okay." Carol's voice called out, she sounded tired, weak.

"Okay. Mr. Shane, can I call you Atticus?" Damon asked, his voice was neutral, calm.

"I didn't do it!"

"Okay, I understand. You saw who did that to the girls?" Damon asked.

Atticus was quiet again. "I only…do them. I don't…I d-d-don't kill them. That's unfair."

Damon swallowed. "Okay. Well, let's just let Carol go. Take me with you instead. Let's just chat."

"She can't. I shot her." Atticus' voice whined.

Damon swallowed. "Okay, so why don't you let me come in, take a look at her, make sure she's okay. You haven't killed anyone yet Atticus. Let's not let that happen, okay?"

Atticus was quiet. "Okay. But just you." His voice was tired.

Damon nodded, he looked back at the uniforms that was with him. "I'm going in, don't follow me. I have my radio, and I'll kept it on." He said and then he opened the door. They were in the history building. He had his hands in clear view. "I'm coming in Atticus."

"Slow. Don't go for your gun, or I'll shoot you."

"I understand. I want to help the situation." Damon said, and then rounded the corner. He saw Carol and Atticus hunched down in the floor. Atticus had the gun pointed at Damon. He could see the nervousness on Atticus' face. The pain, and the confusion. He wasn't himself. "Okay, I'm going to crouch down Atticus. Check on her. Okay?" He said, and moved slow, keeping his hands visible. Atticus moved back, giving himself space from Damon, keeping the gun raised on him. Damon focused on Carol, looking for the gunshot. She was unconscious, but still breathing. She was hit in her abdomen. Something that needed to be fixed right away. "Okay, Atticus, she's lost a lot of blood. Will you let me radio my EMTs? There are some right outside, unarmed, that can come in, and take her to get fixed up. Then me and you, we can just sit here and chat about what's going on with you."

Atticus blinked, sweat was forming on his lip, on his brow. "Yeah. Yeah…that's okay." He sounded unsure, but he didn't want a person to die.

Damon nodded, grabbing his radio. "Hey, I need two EMTs, a gurney. We have a lower abdomen wound. She's unconscious, but still has a pulse and is breathing. Unarmed." He relayed.

A moment later, two EMTs came in, slowly, with the gurney, and picked Carol up on it, and wheeled her away.

Damon focused on Atticus now that Carol was safe. "Alright, let's talk. What's going on man?"

Atticus blinked a few times. Twitching a little. "I-I…he did it. I-I didn't…no one. It hurts…" He pressed butt of the gun to his temple, his other hand on the other temple. He was sweating harder, his heart rate up. "Just shut up, I don't need you to tell me…" His eye twitched. "No, you did this, why should I-"He growled, anger unfurling in him. "Just shut up." He screamed.

Damon realized what was happening. It wasn't two different people, just the same person, different personalities. Atticus was two people in one. "Hey, talk to me. What is he telling you man?"

"Can you see him?" Atticus was astonished, the pain was still drawn over his face.

"No, I can't," Damon was honest. "But he's very real to you, right?"

Atticus nodded. "He won't let me go." He pleaded.

"Can you tell me what his name is?"

Atticus twitched some more. "S-s-silas." He said the name, the whimper in his voice and he recoiled form himself. "He wants out, I c-can't." He screamed again, raking his nails over his face, clawing the skin and drawing blood.

Damon raised a hand, calming. "Hey, let's just breathe a little. Let's just try and relax, and- "

Atticus went still, his eyes shut briefly, before opening. The look in his eye was not wild with fear or pain anymore. But an odd dead, calm. "He's said to much. You know too much." Atticus said, but his voice was different, lilted a little with poise, his tone conceited. His fired at Damon before he could draw his weapon. Three times, two hit Damon in his chest, the other in his stomach. The vest caught all three, but that didn't stop the wind from getting knocked out of him, he drew his weapon as he landed backwards, and fired four times, hitting Atticus in the chest all four times. Atticus was not wearing a vest.

His radio crackled. "Salvatore!" Klaus' voice was panicked. "Are you okay man?"

Damon groaned, reaching for his walkie. He grabbed it, breathing hard. "Clear." He croaked.

Klaus rushed in, his gun drawn, Mason was right behind him along with some other uniforms and Enzo St. John. "Damon!" He rushed to his friend's side. "Where are you hit."

Damon groaned, taking in a deep breath. "Not hit. Vest." He blew out a breath.

Klaus looked at his chest, the vest had the bullets impacted in his chest and lower abdomen. He felt the relief wash over him.

"Get me up." Damon wheezed out, and Klaus and Mason got him to his feet. "Take this off."

Klaus and Mason unstrapped the vest, and pulled it off of him, and Damon sucked in a breath, the weight of the vest coming off him, helped his lungs expand better. He coughed a little. "That hurts like a bitch." Damon muttered.

Enzo checked Atticus, and he was dead. Damon knew he would be. He shot him four times in the chest. There was no coming back from that.

"How's Dean Lockwood?" Damon asked, taking deep breaths to help his lungs keep expanding. The pain radiated in his chest, and he knew there would be bruises there.

"She is stable. At the hospital now. She got lucky." Klaus said. "What the hell happen in here?"

Damon sighed. "He had DID."

"What?"

"Dissociative identity disorder." Damon elaborated.

Klaus shook his head. "I know what it means. How did you figure that?"

"His behavior, and he was talking to his other self, and then, Silas, he called him, appeared. His demeanor changed suddenly, and I didn't have time to react before he shot me. Luckily, I have my vest on, but I don't think his goal was to kill me. I think he was toying with me."

Klaus shook his head. "You're lucky."

"Yeah, I know."

Mason looked around. "I'll CSU come and clear the scene, and have the coroner come for the body. It's likely we'll match the DNA to all the girls. I was thinking that maybe there were two of them, but with DID, it seems like that might be the case here."

Damon nodded. "Yeah. Get those results rushed. We have to be sure."

"Got it." Mason said with a nod, and then stepped away, making some calls.

Damon winced, sucking in another deep breath. "Compared to when I actually got shot, this is a walk in the park." He said to his partner, and best friend.

Klaus nodded. "I bet. Let's get home." He slapped Damon's back lightly.

Damon and Klaus pulled up at the apartment a couple hours later, exhausted, but they managed.

Bella was sitting on the couch with Caroline and Alice. Even Edward was still there, and Jasper and Emmett. Carlisle and Esme went back to Mystic Falls, they didn't want to leave, but it was getting late, and the two hours drive was going to have them back late and Carlisle had a surgery scheduled in the early morning. Rosalie went back with them because she had an early morning for herself as well.

Bella looked up as the door opened, and Klaus walked in Damon right behind him. Bella went to Damon immediately. Her arms around him, and she pressed against him. Her mouth landed on his.

Damon winced as the slight impact of Bella pushed against his chest.

Bella withdrew a little. "You're hurt…" she murmured.

"I got shot." Damon said, lifting his shirt, the big purplish bruises already painted his chest and abdomen.

Bella gasped slightly, looking at the large circler bruises.

Jasper frowned. "Shot?"

"Yeah, vest saved me. I'm just sore." Damon said and leaned in and kissed Bella softly.

Klaus shook his head. "Lucky son of a bitch." He swore. "I'm sorry Bella."

Bella looked at Klaus. "No, it's not your fault." She said and looked back at Damon. "You're, okay?"

"Just sore."

"What about the guy? Did you guys catch him?"

"He's dead." Damon said.

Bella frowned. "How?"

"I shot him. Four times. In the chest." Damon said and blew out a breath.

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine. The scene is still being processed. We checked on the Dean, she's still in surgery. She was shot." Damon explained. "Bella…"

Bella nodded. "What?"

"Atticus Shane. Do you know anything about him?"

Bella blinked a few times. "Um. Yeah. He's a professor. Why?" She stared at him. "Oh god…That's who shot you. Is that who did those things to me?" She murmured.

"Babe, we don't know. We're processing the scene. He shot me, yes. We'll figure it all out, okay? Right now, you need to be in bed. It's getting late. You need rest."

Bella nodded, still a little wide eyed. She had just met Dr. Shane, and talked to him. He seemed…normal. "Okay. I'm…I'm going to go wash up."

Damon kissed her softly and watched her retreat towards the bedroom. All eyes were on him. "What?"

"What happened to Bella?" Emmett asked. "Was she assaulted again?"

Damon and Klaus looked at each other and then he sighed. "I can't discuss that with you."

"Oh my god…" Emmett said, shaking his head. "She was, and no one told us?"

Jasper looked at Damon. He knew that Bella was assaulted once, sexually assaulted. Was there a second time that no one said anything? Or reported?

Klaus spoke. "Calm down. No one said that. "

"Yes. I was assaulted again." Bella said from the hallway. She looked tired. "I was assaulted the night of the fundraiser."

Emmett paled. He had left. Left her by herself, and then that happened to her and a pit formed in his stomach.

"The first night I was assaulted, I was raped. I wasn't just roughed up…."she murmured.

Emmett ran a hand through his hair, clearly shocked, and angry. Edward seemed to be boiling a little too. Jasper just looked sad. He knew about the first time.

"Why didn't you tell us?" Alice asked softly.

"I told Jasper." Bella looked at Jasper. "I didn't want anyone to look at me differently, and so I kept it a secret from the rest of you and I'm sorry."

"The hotel." Emmett spoke, his darkening blue eyes setting on her. "Why didn't you tell us?"

"I didn't tell anyone….I didn't even report it…until much much later." Bella said, her voice wavering.

"Why?" Emmett asked shaking his head.

Bella bit her lip. "Because there was evidence in the room that would implicate Damon had been there with me earlier in the night. Because I didn't want to bring trouble. I know now that I'm just an idiot." She sighed. "He chloroformed me, bound me. I woke up I believe hours later. I just left the hotel, and never…never thought about that night until now." She looked at Damon, tears watering in her eyes. "I'm pregnant because he uh…he removed my birth control, and I didn't know."

Emmett clenched his fists tight. He wanted to hit something. "You've got to be kidding me. Who the fuck does sick and twisted things like this?"

Damon's phone rang, and he sighed. "Salvatore."

"Blood is a match man." Mason said.

"You're serious." Damon said, looking at Klaus.

"Yes, Atticus was the guy who shot Klaus. His DNA is linked to all of the girls. And Bella. He was our guy." Mason felt relieved.

"That's fantastic. Mason man, I love you."

Mason chuckled. "Get rest before you start confessing even more to me. Talk to you later man." He said and hung up.

Damon looked at Klaus. "It was him. Fuck Klaus, it was him."

"Seriously?"

"That's the second-best news I have ever heard in my life." Damon blew out a breath.

"What?" Bella asked, focusing on Damon.

Damon looked at her. "Shane was the guy. He's the one who killed all the girls, shot Klaus, and…you."

"Really?" Bella felt the wave of relief wash over her. "I can't believe it."

Damon moved to her, leaning in and kissed her. "You're safe again."

"Who was it?" Edward asked.

"Professor Shane." Klaus supplied. "He's the one that Damon shot tonight."

"He had a brain tumor, diagnosed last year. In some cases, tumors, or cancers in the brain, can lead to some psychological distress. Shane was experiencing what we call DID. Dissociative Identity disorder. Split personality so to speak. It's why we thought there were two for a while." Damon explained. "But we don't have to think or talk about it anymore. It's over, and everyone can rest easy." He said and looked back to Bella. "But really, you need rest, you look like you're going to fall over." He kissed her forehead.

Bella nodded, and looked at everyone. "I'm really sorry I…I didn't tell everyone the full truth, but please don't worry about me. I have processed what's happened to me, and I'm not dwelling on it. I've moved past it, and I'm okay. I promise."

Jasper was the one to talk now. "Of course. Go get rest. I'm going to carry these two big oofs out of here and to a hotel. We're not going back to campus tonight considering what just happened."

"Oh, just use the spare room." Bella said. "Klaus sleeps with Care anyways, and the couch has a pull-out bed, and we have that rollaway bed in the closet." She explained.

Jasper nodded. "Okay then. Go get rest. Love you sis."

Bella smiled. "Goodnight everyone," she said and her and Damon went back to their room. She blew out a breath. "I do feel better now that they all know the truth. I just hope that they can leave it alone. I don't want to talk it to death."

"I know." Damon said and finished taking his gear off. His gun was at the station, being processed, which was protocol. He slipped his shirt off, and Bella just stared. "It doesn't hurt as bad as you think. It looks worse, I know."

"I'm so happy you were wearing a vest." Bella murmured.

Damon smiled. "Well, hostage situations, vests are a requirement. I should have been quicker. The way he was acting, I should have been ready, but I had to get Carol out of there, and I did. He turned so quickly. One moment he was Atticus, and then the other personality, Silas, he came out so fast, and I just…slow to react. Won't happen again."

Bella nodded, and leaned in gently, and kissed him. "Go shower, I know you want one. I'll be in bed, waiting." She smiled and then climbed into bed, and watched him saunter into the bathroom, grinning at her. She could rest easier knowing that Atticus Shane was gone, and not able to hurt anyone else ever again. She closed her eyes, feeling heavy and drifted off to sleep.

[5 Months later]

School was out for the next two months, summer vacation so to speak. Anna, the surrogate had the twins three weeks prior, born slightly premature, but they were healthy. So Bella had a new brother and a sister. Alec and Jane Cullen. Esme was over the moon happy to have them home, and everything was so perfect.

Bella on the other hand, was two weeks overdue, today. She was getting induced later that evening, so she was trying everything to make labor just happen.

"Why does she not want out?" Bella whined.

"I'm sure she's just taking her time. Stewing until perfection." Alice said happily.

They had done some rearranging. Alice moved into the old room Klaus had been using before, so Bella could use the room closer to her as a nursery for Ava Leigh. Klaus was still staying in the apartment, the building he was living in just wasn't doing what they were supposed to. The fumigation thing happened against and Klaus was just getting irritated, so Bella, Alice, and Caroline told him to just move in. It wasn't a big deal. And after some hesitation, he did. He was so in love with Caroline, and she was with him.

Stefan was spending a lot of time over with Alice, and to Bella's surprise, the two were dating, and it was going strong. Everything was just moving along so smoothly. She was finally in a happier place, with her friends, and family, and that's all that was important. That and getting Ava to finally make her appearance.

Bella bounced up and down on a ball, did squats, ate pineapple, hot sauce, you name it, she did it, and nothing. By four that evening, Damon walked through the door.

"Are you ready?"

"Yessss." Bella groaned from the couch.

Damon smiled. "Come on, let's get to the hospital." He helped her off the couch and the whoosh of her water breaking made her excited.

"Damon! My water just broke!" A huge smile was on her face.

Damon chuckled. "Yes, I see that babe, so we definitely need to get to the hospital." He said and helped her down to the car. "Any pain?"

Bella thought about the twinges she was getting throughout the day. "Not really pain as much as it is just a nuisance." She said, rubbing a hand over her belly. "She's finally going to be here."

Damon smiled, kissing her softly, before driving off to the hospital.

[10 Hours later]

Ava Leigh Salvatore came into the world screaming. Weighing 8 pounds, ten ounces, and a good twenty-two inches long. Damon was amazed at how well Bella did, delivering her. Ava had the darkest of hair, ruffled in small curls on her head, and when she opened her eyes the first time, piercing blue eyes stared back.

"She's perfect." Bella murmured, cradling her daughter.

Damon was sitting on the bed next to Bella, his arm around her as she leaned into him. "She is." He whispered. "Marry me, Bella."

Bella looked up at him. "You don't have to marry me because of Ava."

"I want to marry you because I love you. Even if we didn't have Ava, I would want that. I want you forever, I want you to be my wife, my everything." He leaned in, kissing her gently.

Bella smiled against his lips. "Okay. I'll marry you." They snuggled together on the bed, and then a knock sounded at the door. It cracked open and Esme poked her head in. "Mom, you made it."

Esme walked in the room, Carlisle right behind her. "Oh, she's sleeping." She whispered.

"Do you want to hold her?" Bella asked.

Esme of course brightened up, she wanted to hold her first grandchild. She washed her hands quickly, and then took Ava from Bella. She looked down at her precious, sleeping face. "She's beautiful." She teared up. "Oh Bella, honey, I'm so proud of you."

Carlisle smiled. "She's perfect. Worth the wait huh?"

"Yeah, yeah she was." Bella smiled, still feeling tired. It had been a long night and day, so she was ready to rest.

Damon kissed the top of Bella's head, feeling her relax into him, and then she was asleep.

Carlisle smiled at his daughter. She needed the rest.

Esme glanced up, smiling. "She's sleeping too."

Damon nodded. "She really did good. Very strong. I'm proud of her." He looked down at the sleeping Bella. "I asked her to marry me, and she agreed." He said and looked at Carlisle.

Carlisle nodded. "That's good. I knew it would happen. You're good for her. I'm happy that she found someone like you."

"Thank you, Carlisle, that means a lot."

Esme swayed, humming softly to Ava as Bella slept, resting after bringing in the most precious gift into the world.
