The carriage was dead silent as the awkward duo sat there in wait.
The half elf woman gently held the hand of her first true friend. Yes she had met people before, but the man currently gripping her hand with a strange feeling of protectiveness was different.
She was drawn to him, as she had been since the day she met him.
Few hours Later
Both Satella and Subaru arrived to what seemed like Lugunica, Subaru would note that the kingdom didn't look too different from before although he would note the atmosphere seemed more alive or grim. There were the usual citizens of demi-humans and normal people roaming the streets as they were doing their own Business. Subaru eyed the many shops and smaller areas thinking of what his next step would be when suddenly he felt a hand hold his shoulder.
"Subaru, what should we do first?" Giddily, Satella nearly hopped up in excitement.
Subaru, who had taken notice of this, blinked at her. "Ah Satella-tan, I think we should probably look around and see what's up. This is my first time here so it's best to see where we are."
Satella, who was more than happy to spend her time with Subaru, complied, "Alright Subaru, let's go."
The duo of Subaru and Satella decided to explore the kingdom, and it was a fun time. One could describe it as a date. They both looked around to the many places that were present such as shops to buy items or even food stands that provided many treats for the citizens of the kingdom.
"Hmmm something smells good I wonder where it's from." Subaru eyed a little shop, which looked like it sold a type of soup similar to Ramen.
"Hahah I feel like I'm in Naruto" Subaru thought as he remembered those fun times he had of watching the show.
This thought process also stimulated him to remember something else. "Hey Satella-tan wanna go to that soup store? I'm kinda hungry."
"Sure, Subaru. I myself am a bit hungry." As she rubbed her stomach in a cute manner.
"I myself, huh…" Staring off wistfully into a nonexistent space, Subaru pondered the last time he got to say those words. Thinking about it, it would make sense that phrases he thought nobody said anymore were being said 400 years earlier than his actual arrival.
"Alright then let's go" Subaru said as the duo made their way into the shop
"Welcome to my shop what would you like" The man behind said as the duo both sat down
"We would like two bowls of your best soup please." Subaru responded
Turning back around, the soup tender simply told them, "2 bowls coming up"
The man brought both Satella and Subaru a bowl of very delicious looking soup as Satella handed the man the money they both dug in to their treat.
"Wow this is tasty." Subaru said as he ate the soup, noticing a rather odd feeling of fulfilment in himself.
"Yes I agree, this is overtly tasty" Satella said as she nibbled on her food.
Satella was enjoying her food when she saw Subaru with a string of noodle on his face. He probably didn't notice it was stuck there, so Satella thought there was nothing wrong with helping him out. Satella slowly inched closer to his face much to the boy's confusion once she got close enough she licked the string of noodle off his face.
"S-SS-S SATELLA! What are you doing.?" Subaru screamed, starling the poor girl alongside everyone else in the restaurant.
"What? I was just removing a noodle off your face."
The blushing Subaru couldn't even process what was happening, sure a pretty girl licked his face but he was not ready for such assertive actions at that moment. He probably never would be.
"You could have just told me or used your hands. Why did you lick me?" Still, even he was surprised that she didn't know this much about common sense.
"Well I didn't think it would bother you so much" Said a clueless Satella as her lack of a knowledge of social norms managed to surprise Subaru yet again.
"Well it's not that I didn't well like it it's just I didn't expect you to do it and also again this is the type of thing couples do Satella-tan"
Satella processed his words and with an annoyed pout protested .
"Mannnn why is it always this is what a married couple do at this point. Why don't we just get married or something?"
Subaru looked at her shocked as even she didn't realize what she had just said. Moments later, a blushing Satella, whose face could compare to the sun in relative temperature, made her way to apologize to Subaru. He laughed at her cuteness, as it was moments like this that made Subaru want to live more seeing his friends smile.
Both members of the duo finished up their food and decided to head out to continue their little exploration. They visited many different areas and bought some neat items, such as some small trinkets and of course, the legendary travel bag to hold items that were going to be used later. Not having one seemed like quite the foolish move to make.
"Man this place really is amazing, isn't it Tella." Subaru, who had offhandedly come up with a new nickname, simply sat down and had a dreamy smile creep across his face.
"Tella?" Satella looked at him with confusion. Yet another oddity of his, she presumed.
"Tella is another new nickname I made for you. Like it?"
"Yup, I like it." She said excitedly, as the thought of a new nickname did excite her quite a bit.
The duo continued walking talking about nick names and such when they were interrupted by a group of men in front of them.
"Hey you there why don't you and the lady give us all you got"
Shit. It looks like thieves are here. Man, the guys from before weren't enough and now we gotta deal with them?
"Hey, why ya just standing there? Cough up what ya got and we'll let you be on your merry way."
One of the thieves approached them with a knife immediately he was knocked across the floor hitting another thief in the process.
"What the fuck was that?" one of the men spoke up.
Immediately he felt a sudden grip on his leg, and he was picked up and thrown into the wall. After seeing this, the remaining men ran away fearing for their lives, with a smug Tella and a very confused Subaru being the only remaining occupants of the alleyway.
"Uhhhh Tella-tan, what happened?" Said the confused Subaru.
"Well they were interrupting us and posed a threat, so I dealt with them." Saying it as if it were nothing, Satella threw her hair up behind her. It seemed as if there was no reason behind it, just a random thing she did.
"I assume that was magic of some sort?" Subaru couldn't hide the amazement in his voice.
"Yes, as you can see I'm a master of yin magic. I used it to beat those robbers to the ground just then."
"Wow. You're awesome Tella-tan" Subaru said, clearly impressed.
This sudden praise caused Satella to blush aside Subaru as she put her hands behind her back with an innocent smile.
"Ahhh thanks Subaru, but we should get going right?"
"Oh yeah, let's go then." Subaru said as he walked out the alley with Satella.
Subaru and Satella spent more time together as they both continued to explore this kingdom. Besides the criminals and the discrimination against demihumans, this was a perfect experience for them until they reached what looked like a library.
"Hey Satella-tan what's this place? Some sort of public library?" Subaru asked much to his curiosity. He would be surprised if-
Satella looked at the place and looked at Subaru for a brief moment
"Oh this is a library, correct."
"Cool, can we go inside? I kinda want to check this place out."
"I don't know Subaru, the owner of this library can be a meanie sometimes, and I don't want them saying bad stuff about you." Satella, who now had a cute pout across her face, frowned slightly. She didn't want her first friend to have to deal with any harassment if necessary.
"Hey it's fine Tella. I'm sure nothing will happen" Nevertheless, the confident man known as Subaru wouldn't budge on this issue. In comparison to what he had already done, this seemed relatively harmless.
"Now let's just go inside already," he insisted.
They both opened the door to what looked like a massive library of some sorts filled to the brim with books.
"Woah this place looks cool" Subaru was amazed by the amount of books in this building.
"Yeah, it's great." Satella tried to hide her anxiety, but it did little. It was evident in her voice that she was on edge.
"Well then, I'm going to look around see if anything catches my eye" Subaru said as he and Satella wandered around
Subaru looked around the library for something interesting to read, as he was looking around he found it weird no one else was in the area he would expect a few people to be here but to his surprise no one was here
"Man this library is really empty wonder why no one is here"
"Well Subaru that's becaus-" Satella was going to speak until she was interrupted by a female voice
An unidentified yet familiar voice came from behind the pairing. "My My, that's because no is supposed to be in here."
Subaru was shocked to be hearing such a voice to begin with. It had been a month since he had last heard it, and now that he wasn't hearing it in the realm he was supposed to...
"Well aren't you going to turn around? It's rude for a man to have their back turned to a fair maiden asking for attention."
Subaura built up the courage and turned around along with Satella as they both faced the mysterious woman. Subaru was shocked to see none other than Echidona, the witch of greed.
Subaru was in shock as he stared at the witch. It isn't every day you encounter a witch, and this statement was doubly true for an isekai'd Subaru. Taking this into account, it was more than fair that Subaru stared straight at Echidona with his mind completely on the fritz.
Echidona, who was currently holding a smile containing a mixture of pleasure, intrigue, humor, and of course, curiosity, observed the boys face right back in return. "If you keep staring at me with those eyes of yours, I don't think my poor heart can take it."
Snapping out of his trance, Subaru quickly shook his head and tried to kickstart his mind. "O-Oh Sorry about that. I was just surprised to see someone else here."
Echinina looked at him atypically, although she still held that confusing smile. Leaning in,
"Don't be sorry, as I for one understand what it's like to be curious. That said, knowledge is not without its price. So, can I ask why you and the half-elf have stumbled into one of my libraries?"
"Well I kinda wanted to check this place out maybe read a book or two" It was really the only thing he had wanted to do. With the exception of maybe sitting down alongside Satella, Subaru had just hoped to sit down and gather some more knowledge about the new time he was in.
"Well that seems like a reasonable request. Books are a joy to read, but they are far more enjoyable when you have a partner. Why don't you join me for a cup of tea? It's very rare that I have guests here." Seemingly making up her mind about something, Echidona extended an offer to Subaru. Whatever her intent was seemed inconsequential at the moment.
Subaru thought to himself as he remembered the tea party before it was pretty normal except the body fluid tea, but maybe this time she wouldn't trick him with it.
"Sure, tea sounds nice." Shrugging his shoulders, Subaru decided to go with his trusted and true philosophy of "It'll work out later" and accepted the offer.
"Excellent. Come with me." Fashionably turning around, Echidona ordered Subaru and Satella to follow her.
The trio made their way to the back of the library, each having their own thoughts in the process. Satella was quiet on the matter, so no one knew what she was thinking or anything close.
Subaru, although cautious, was still surprised about the witch of greed and her sudden appearance, but he put those thoughts aside for now as he followed the witch.
Echidna had a very different thought process as she thought about the boy behind her. She first noted that Satella, the half-elf, was usually always alone and refused to leave her household even when Minerva asked her to. Seeing her here, much less with this boy was a big surprise to her, and she was more than curious about what circumstances led her to leave her house. Then she thought about the boy, who was probably the reason why Satella came out of her isolation in the first place.
Echidona noted how interesting he was as he had no fear when talking to a witch. Many would go crazy or not even think about having a normal conversation with her, and a tea party with one would be nothing short of pure madness. Her curiosity was spiked by this new boy. She had to learn more about him.
Silently humming to herself, Echidona asked the two, "Well, why don't you two sit down as I prepare the tea."
This was of course, a simultaneous bluff and a truth. While she would indeed go off to make some tea, Echidona would also spend this time thinking up ways to figure out this boy and his compatriot. She was already beginning to feel some sort of attachment to this boy and his mysteries.
"Sure thing ma'am" Subaru said as he and Satella took a seat while Echidona went to bring the tea.
"Hey Tella-tan you okay? You haven't said anything for a while." His voice full of both concern and compassion, Subaru tried to figure out why his compatriot was so silent.
"O-oh sorry Subaru didn't mean to make you worry. It's just that...well do you know who that person is?"
Now it was Satella's turn to be surprised by an obliviousness comparable only to her own. "Well that's Echidona, the witch of greed. Right?"
"Yes that's her, but you just said it so normally."
"I don't follow you. Is there something weird about that?"
"It's just she's a witch and most people tend to fear witches so why don't you " Satella asked confused
"I don't know what to say Satella I just don't feel fear" Subaru said as even he was confused she was a witch he should be scared but honestly he really couldn't care about her status"
As the duo talked, Echindona came back with a kettle of tea and 3 cups that she brought to the table as she began pouring the trio conversed more leading to Subaru getting bombarded by questions from Echindina.
"So what is your name boy?" She asked
"My name is Subaru Natsuki." Subaru said
"Where are you from?" Keeping up with her persistence, Echidona continued her questioning.
"A land far east you've probably never heard off." Well if she had heard of it then they had other things to worry about.
This answer caught Echidona off guard. To her, there was no current country further than Lugunica. "Hmmm, far east you say. If my knowledge is correct Luganica is the furthest nation to the east, but you don't seem to be lying."
"Tell me boy, how did you manage to meet her?" As she pointed to Satella which caused the half-elf's head to shoot straight up.
"Who? You mean Satella-tan? Oh I met her at some flower field near a forest. After that I lived with her for a month or so and we became friends." A relatively short and sweet explanation, but it did summarize things fairly well.
Echidna seemed surprised for a moment before her normal smile returned a second later.
"I must say, I am impressed. Usually the half-elf is isolated in her tiny little home but seeing you drag her out is a high achievement. I congratulate you. It must have been hard."
"Echidona, you meanie." Satella pouted while wearing a much smaller, albeit still noticeable blush.
"While this has been a nice chat, I am a very busy lady and I have work to do. Thank you for having tea with gets quite lonely here." She then turned towards the space between both of them, and rapidly rotated her view from Satella to Subaru. "Also, you may pick out a book out of this library. I have studied them well enough that missing one shouldn't be too big of a deal."
Subaru reached his hand out for a hand shake with a bright, wide smile.
"Yeah it was nice meeting you. Thanks for having the opportunity to have tea with you"
Echidna looked at him for a moment before smiling a more genuine grin than last time while returning the handshake.
"We will meet again, Natsuki Subaru."
Before he could say anything she left, both Subaru and Satella looked at each other before leaving to exit the library.
The lady dressed in black walked around with only her thoughts as company.
"That boy, there's something about him that excites me."
Not even she, the witch of greed who tries to understand all there is, can understand what about him makes her feel this way. All that she did know was that she could feel that whatever actions that boy does could help satisfy her curiosity.
How Interesting….
