Chapter 6

When he heard the soft footsteps of the nightingale drawing nearer he raced to the end of the corridor so as to not to startle her and catch a glimpse of the woman with the magical voice. As he rounded the corner and turned back, the door opened and out of the room walked the person draped in black clothing. The person that had gone in the elevator after they had gone out, she was the one with the voice like an angel. Stunned, he just watched as the tall shapeless figure disappeared down the hall and into the open elevator. Which revealed his bewildered cousin, who did a double take as she turned back to the closing elevator. Ventus stepped out hiding place and walked towards his cousin, who looked at him and asked. 'I thought something happened to you. Did you grab your keys?'

'I,' he continued to look towards the elevator as if the woman would come back at any moment.

'Earth to Ventus, what's going on? You know you shouldn't gawk at people.'

'What…yeah,' he shook himself out of his stupor. 'Did you see her?'

'Who, the person in black? What about them?' Namine asked him a bit startled by his reaction in regards to that person.

'She came to see Grandma,' Ventus grabbed her hand and pulled her towards their grandmother's room.

'Great, but why are we going back. Didn't you already grab your keys?'

'Because I haven't grabbed them yet,' he opened the door to his grandmother's room and walked in ready to ask her about the woman from before, but she was fast asleep. 'She's never asleep at this time.'

'Shhh,' Namine hushed him. 'You can't wake her, grab your keys and let's go.'

'But she's real,' Ventus told her and she just looked at him like he was crazy.

'Who,' she whispered and told him to lower his voice so they didn't wake her.

'Her Nightingale, the one she says has the voice of an angel.'

'Ventus,' Namine was starting to worry. 'Maybe we should go home so that you can get some rest. It's late and we still have work tomorrow.'

'I,' he stopped, 'maybe some rest will be good. Once tomorrow comes, I'll come and visit her.'

'Yeah,' she looked at the end table with the large arrangement of white roses and saw the keys laying next to them. 'These were the roses she brought,' she reached out her hand and touched one of the soft white petals. 'They're beautiful.'

'Her voice was beautiful, I wonder what she looks like?'

'Well, while you keep wondering let's go home. It's getting late,' she told him and walked over to him to grab his wrist and drag his day dream self out of the room.

o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o

Terra arrived at his grandmother's hospital room to visit her, the woman was extremely cheerful and she had a large bouquet of white roses on one of her night stands. 'Hello, Grandma,' he announced himself and walked over to her so that he can lean in and give her a kiss. 'You seem lively today.'

'Hello, Terra,' she kissed his cheek back. 'Extremely so.'

It was the first time in a long time that he saw her in such a good mood, she was glowing, 'Does it have to do with this large arrangement of white flowers?'

'They are beautiful aren't they? The nurse this morning was telling me how pretty they were and how jealous she was,' she beamed as she turned towards the floral smell.

'So I am guessing they are from a special person.'

'A very special person,' she heard him pulling a chair up beside her and taking a seat.

Terra looked up at his grandmother a bit perplexed by her enthusiasm. She had outlived most of her friends and she didn't have any secret admirers. He was about to ask her who this person was, when his brother rushed in on a whirl wind of excitement. 'Grandma,' Ventus called out to her.

After last night Ventus couldn't get the voice or the dark figure out of his mind. 'Hello, Dear,' she turned her face towards his voice.

'I didn't think you'd have company this early,' he nodded in greeting to his brother.

'Your brother and I were just talking about my roses,' she answered. 'Aren't they lovely?'

'Yeah,' he nodded without looking at them. 'That's what I wanted to talk to you about, but I can see that you're busy. So I'll stop by later.'

'Wait,' Terra called out to his retreating little brother, 'you saw the person who brought these?'

'Well,' Ventus didn't know how to answer without annoying his brother. 'Yes and no. She was covered all in black and I couldn't make her face out. But, I do know she has the most amazing voice I've ever heard.'

'You talked to her,' his grandmother asked.

Terra had gotten up and walked over to block his escape, 'Did you talk to her,' he repeated their grandmother's question.

'Um, no,' he shook his head, 'I forgot my keys and had to come back last night.'

'You eavesdropped?'

'I didn't mean too, it's just,' Ventus felt a bit ashamed.

'Her voice was lovely and you couldn't resist?' His grandmother asked giving him an excuse.

'Yeah,' he nodded, 'it was captivating.'

'Well, why don't you guys tell me who this amazing woman with a beautiful voice is,' Terra had a very suspicious feeling that he knew who she was.

'Grandma's Nightingale, I can't remember what her name is, but she's real.'

'Ursa,' he asked their grandmother instead of Ventus. 'She came here? You spoke to her?'

Ventus was pushed aside as Terra grabbed his grandmother's shoulder, afraid that she would try to get away. 'Terra, you're going to hurt her.'

Ventus tried to pull his brother off of her, 'I need to know, please, Grandma. Was it Ursa?'

His grandmother frowned, 'She was here, but only for a moment.'

'Will she come again, did she say? If she is, did she give you a time and day? I need to talk to her Grandma.'

'Hold it,' Ventus pulled is erratic brother away. 'You know this woman?'

'Not really, I just know what father has told me about her,' he pulled himself away from Ventus. 'But she is someone very important.'

'Important,' he said to himself as he looked at his brother and then grandmother. As far as he was concerned this Ursa character was just his grandmother's Nightingale, nothing more. So how was she important to the family?

'It's decided Grandma, I am coming to spend the night with you,' Terra announced.

'As much as I enjoy my grandchildren's' company, I must tell you to stay home and enjoy time with your family.' She tried to dissuade him.

'Not going to happen,' Terra said already determined to catch his sister in the flesh.

o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o

As night fell, she refused to leave the house. Last night she had made a mistake in going out without Amistad and almost did the same once more. Nevertheless, she also felt bad about her grandmother and she frowned to herself. She only wish was a song and she failed to fulfill her one request because she was afraid of the unknown. The more she thought about it the more she realized that fear of the unknown would always hold her back. She needed to face her problems head on, well maybe anyone but Terra. She was still upset with him for what he said the day before.

o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o

Terra was exhausted, with blood-shot red eyes that he struggled to keep open and furious that his vigilant night left him empty handed. With an annoying brother that was happily sleeping on his left shoulder with drool coming out of his mouth. 'Hey, wake up,' he ordered Ventus as his pushed him off his shoulder so he could sit up right.

'What,' he asked with a slur then remembered why he was sleeping in a hospital. 'Is she here?' He sat up straighter and looked around.

'No, wipe the drool off your chin,' he told him as he got up and stretched his stiff muscles and aching joints.

Ventus wiped his face, a bit embarrassed at being caught drooling at his age. 'Maybe she sensed that someone would camp out in Grandma's room,' he offered his dejected brother and looked at his grandmother who was also waking up but still looked tired. Her insomnia did a number on her last night and she had also kept watch until who knows when.

'I think that your brother has a point,' his sleep voiced grandmother told him as she turned in the direction of their voices. 'That's why you boys should just go home and rest. Don't think of coming back tonight.'

'Grandma, you know that this is the only place that we can catch her unguarded.'

'You sound like she's some criminal that you need to capture,' his grandmother pointed out as she shifted in her bed trying to make herself comfortable.

'That's not it,' he mumbled as he felt the down crest of his lips and the cress between his brows deepen.

'I am sure that with given time she will come to you.'

'She'll only come…' Terra paused and decided. 'You're right, it was foolish of us to stay here. We'll go home and come and visit you later.'

'What,' Ventus was confused by his brother's sudden change of mind. Given the fact that this was their sister they were talking about. After they had left yesterday, Ventus cornered Terra and questioned him about the mysterious woman and why she was so important. To say that he wasn't shocked, surprised, excited and furious all at the same time was an understatement. It had amazed him that she had been such a well guarded secret that no one ever suspected within the house, let alone a child. When their grandmother had started talking about her nightingale and how she was real, their mother became uncomfortable and silent, at other times she would step out of the room so she wouldn't have to listen to her.

As he thought about the last six years, he realized that there had been a shift between his parents. Mainly his father, at first he thought it had to do with the disappearance of Amistad. Whom he misjudged all those years thinking that she was his father's lover. It didn't help that he would find his father leaving the abandoned room from time to time. He never visited, considering he was told years ago that it was off limits and he wasn't curious to see the room of his father's lover. Now that he knew the real reason behind Amistad's protectiveness over the room, he wanted to see it too. He wanted to see the place that his sister had called home all those years ago and see if there was a fragment of her past left behind.

Ventus had not only been shocked to hear that he had a sister, but that she refused to see them. Everyone claimed that she had a mutation, but it couldn't be so bad right? His parents didn't have to lie and tell them that she was dead or hide her away within the house like a prisoner that never got to feel the warmth of the sun. Even more so when she had the voice of an angel, that the world needed to be exposed too. But in a way her voice was already exposed, he never would have thought that she was the writer of the series Namine enjoyed. He had read it himself and liked it as well, but he wasn't a huge fan like Namine. Who waited with anticipation for the final installment, where she was sure the protagonist would find true love and break her curse.

He didn't want to meet her because of her lovely voice or because he enjoyed her story telling, but because she was his sister. A person whom his family had exiled within her own home. He had a feeling it wasn't the luxurious that she missed out on as a child, but the freedom to run free, cause mischief and most of all be with her family. 'Come on, if we don't get going we'll be late for work and I need to get home so that I can shower and change.'

'But what about,' he wanted to protest, but by the look on his brother's face he knew he was already planning something. 'Fine.'

Terra nodded and they both said their good-byes and gave their grandmother a kiss on the cheek before leaving. As they walked down the hall and to the elevators, Ventus finally looked over at him and asked, 'So what are we going to do?'

The elevator arrived and they got on, 'We're going to camp out in the lobby and when we see her, we'll grab her.'

'Don't you mean ask her to talk to us?'

'No, she's stubborn and will runaway from us. She didn't want to see me when I went and asked to speak to her,' he told him, leaving out the part were he lost his temper a bit and said something that he shouldn't have.

'But you make it sound as if we're going to kidnap her, when all we want is to talk to her and ask her if we can be a part of her life or at least get to know her,' Ventus pointed out.

'We're not kidnaping, be we need to corner her so that she doesn't runaway.'

Ventus studied his older brother, who was known for losing his temper when things didn't go his way. Over the years he had gotten better at controlling it, but sometimes remnants of his old self would slip through cracks. 'You didn't lose yourself at her refusal and say something stupid, did you?'

Ventus hit the nail over the head and Terra tightened his fist and didn't say anything else besides, 'Meet me at seven tonight, if you plan to come and stake out the lobby with me.'

o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o

Ursa had finally gotten the courage to leave the house, she had called for a cab and had them pick her up so that she could head over to the hospital. The reason she had decided to go in so early was because it was probably when everyone was at home getting ready for work. The possibility of them crossing paths on a weekday was minimal. One of the elevators arrived and was heading up, she took it upstairs to the eighth floor. As her elevators door closed, the second elevator arrived and both brothers hurriedly left. Neither sibling realizing that the meeting they desired or dreaded was missed by mere seconds of fate.

As she arrived at the eighth floor, she silently walked towards her grandmother's room. She could feel curious eyes on her the entire time, she couldn't blame them. She was a sight to be seen, but no one really broached the topic of her attire or drew close to her. Although, she had a feeling that being dressed in complete black, within a hospital wasn't something patients on death's bed were pleased to see. Before she knocked and alerted her grandmother of her presence, the door was cracked open and she could hear voices coming from inside. She decided that it was best not to intrude, so the waited outside the door for about five minutes before the doctor walked out.

To say that he wasn't startled by her appearance was an understatement. 'Sorry, I didn't see you there,' he told her before turning to take his leave.

Ursa didn't say anything, she just nodded and watched him turn away, puzzled and a bit bewildered by her attire. She turned to the door and knocked to announce her arrival, 'Come in,' she heard the weak and tired voice.

'Hello,' she greeted and watched as her grandmother's face began to transform, as a smile filled her worn and wrinkly face.

'I am so happy that you decided to come back,' she told her.

'I hope that you didn't wait for me,' she apologized.

'Oh, no, it's a good thing that you didn't. Your brothers were camped out here all night,' she confessed.

'They must have been worried about you,' she thanked her lucky stars that she didn't come out to see her last night and that they left early.

Her grandmother's smile softened, 'They are good boys, but I am not the reason they were here.'

'Oh,' she thought for a moment and felt a chill run down her spine. 'You didn't tell them that I was here, did you?'

'No, Child, I would never do such a thing. Having you here is a gift, I wouldn't do anything to jeopardize my ability to receive it. However, Ventus, your younger brother, heard you singing and he wanted to meet the person behind the lovely voice. He mentioned your nickname in front of Terra and he figured it out.

'Then I must go,' she got up from the seat she had taken beside her. It seemed that being near her grandmother would really bring her closure to the people she was bound to meet eventually, but not because they were stalking her room.

'Please, don't go,' her grandmother cried out. 'I will talk to them and ask them to leave you alone.'

'Terra seems too strong willed and stubborn to listen to you or anyone.'

'He feels guilty for the way that you were treated. Even more so when he realized his actions hurt you, not knowing who you were or that you even existed.'

Ursa shook her head, knowing her grandmother couldn't see the action she spoke up. 'I hold nothing against him. All I wish to do is live my life in peace.'

'I understand, but those young men don't wish to harm you or bring misfortune into your life. They just want to get to know you and be a part of it, because they are your family.'

Ursa wanted to laugh at that, just because they were family didn't mean that they wouldn't reject her, hide her away and never even acknowledge her existence. 'Once they see how hideous I am, they'll want nothing to do with me.'

'Then why are you here?'

Ursa was taken back by her statement, she was there because she requested it, but also because even seeing her in her attire, years ago, she offered her kindness. 'I wanted to meet you and repay your kindness. Also, I know that even if I lose my head piece, you won't be able to judge me based on appearance.'

'How did you know,' she asked, she hadn't mentioned it and she was great at facing and focusing on the area she heard their voices coming from.

'Amistad keeps in touch with my father and he told her about you losing your sight two years ago.'

'So if I weren't blind, you wouldn't be here?'

'I would have sang to you from outside your door or called you on the phone.'

'Then you would have still tried to talk to me,' she smiled as she looked up at her.

'I would have,' she answered.

'Good, now take a seat and honor me with a song please. You don't know what a long night I had. Terra kept pacing back and forth and Ventus snored too loudly, bless his future wife.'

Ursa found herself laughing as she pictured both brothers, an annoyed Terra watching a peacefully sleeping Ventus. 'Alright,' she watched as the older woman got ready for bed, so early in the morning.

'Just one song.' She took her seat once again and began to sing.

o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o

After a week of not being able to catch her, Terra could feel his anger and frustration beginning to get the best of him. 'I don't get it! We've been camping out here for the past week and nothing. Do you think she stopped coming because Grandma ratted us out?'

'No,' Ventus shook his head, 'Grandma's been too cheerful lately. Maybe we should just give her time,' he yawned, 'or you could give me her address and I'll go and see if she'll talk to me.'

Terra scoffed, 'Why would she want to talk to you, if she didn't want to talk to me.'

Ventus was a little annoyed at the statement, he was sleep deprived and a bit more irritable and slapped him with, 'Because I've never said anything to offend her.'

'I told you,' his fist clenched, 'I didn't say anything wrong.'

'You know, you clench your fist every time you lie,' he pointed out.

Terra looked down at his fist and released them, 'I am just doing it because we've been wasting our time.'

o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o

Ursa looked up at her ceiling and sighed. Being alone for the past two weeks had been fine, but entering the third week and she was starting to feel lonely. Amistad had called her during the end of last week and told her that she needed to prolong her return home. It seemed that something big and unexpected had happened to Riku. She had thought about asking, but if Amistad didn't want to tell her it was her choice. However, as she stared up at the cream colored ceiling she was becoming lonelier in the big house. She snapped out of her thoughts, when the buzzard to the main gate went off. She turned to her side on the couch and looked at the hallway, where the intercom was located. She was too lazy to go and get it, but it went off for a second time. With a groan she got up off the couch and headed to investigate.

She reached the intercom and monitor, 'Yes,' she looked at what appeared to be a delivery man at her door. Strange, because she wasn't expecting anything.

'I have a delivery for Mrs. Ursa Veale,' the strange delivery man told her.

'I don't have any deliveries scheduled today,' she studied him and his vehicle. It was too nice for it to be just an ordinary delivery, he disappeared from view and into his car to pull out a cute puppy.

'It was sent here by Mr. Terra Veale.'

She almost choked as he used Mr. in front of her brother's name, because of his horrible cap, she couldn't make out his face. However, the adorable boarder collie in his hands made the corner of her lips turn up into a smile. Debating with herself the fact of whether or not to accept, she finally answered. 'Just follow the road,' she buzzed him in.

o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o

Ventus couldn't believe his good fortune, she allowed him to enter, he looked down at the puppy next to him. 'See, I knew that being nice to her would get me in. Okay, maybe I tricked her and used you,' he petted the puppy. 'But I'll apologize later and make it all better.'

The drive to her house was long, he wondered how long he would have taken if he had walked. Already waiting for him in dark attire was his sister on the porch. Because she was covered from head to toe he couldn't see what she was thinking, he would continue to play the delivery man routine. He stopped the car and shut it off, carefully he grabbed the pup in his arms. 'Come on little buddy, don't fail me.'

Ursa studied the fancy black SUV and then the delivery man that was in simple, yet brand names clothes. 'Humph,' she thought in annoyance at her older younger brother. She didn't need to see his face to know who he was, she just needed to put together all the clues.

Ventus ran around the other side to stand before her, 'Hello, I have this cute puppy for you and some food, toys and other items—-'

'You can stop your act,' she cut him off.

Ventus lifted his head up, so that the bill fo the cap he was wearing wasn't hiding his face anymore, 'You knew?'

She smiled at his surprised look, but she nodded in response. 'I just wanted to tell you to your face to please leave me alone. I've done nothing to the family for you two to continue coming after me.'

'No, you're wrong,' he told a step towards her but she lifted up a black gloved hand to stop him. 'We don't wish to do anything, but to talk to you.'

'You and Terra should just do what has always been done,' she told him, 'forget that I have ever existed.'

'We can't do that,' Ventus shook his head as he held the puppy closer. 'You're our sister, our family. Do you hate us so much?'

She watched as the puppy in his arms began to struggle and Ventus bent down to set it down. 'I don't hate you or anyone in the family, I just wish to live my life freely .'

'Terra and I don't ask for much, just a chance to get to know you,' the puppy reached the steps before her and was debating how to climb up.

Ursa stopped watching the puppy try to climb the stairs to join her and looked over at her brother. 'You seem like a nice person, but I don't think that getting to know me will be the right thing. Therefore, I'll have to please ask you to please leave.'

He watched as the puppy reached his new owner's side and tried to get her attention, unworried or fazed by her appearance. Frowning at the fact that she would let the puppy join her while she turned him away. He was family, did that mean nothing to her? He lifted his gaze up to her, 'Ursa—-'

She sighed, stubbornness seemed to be a common trait that ran within the family, 'Look, I am honored that you want to get to know me. However, I believe that it is best if we kept on our separate ways.'

'Then why do you allow our Grandma to get close to you?'

'Because it is her last request,' she answered, leaving out the kindness that she offered her years ago.

'How do you know that this is it for her? She could recover and live an extra ten years. Will you leave her side once she gets better?'

Ursa sighed, it wasn't hard to take notice of her Grandmother's deteriorating appearance and how everything seemed to be shutting down slowly. She didn't ask her directly, but she had overheard the doctors talking about the progress of her cancer and how it was attacking most of her organs. That they would do everything in their power to help ease the pain. She was too old to go under the knife and with chemo, her would really effect her chances of recovery. 'She has cancer, with her age and the stage that it's in, it really hurts the chances of her recovery. You now better than I that she's there to make her transition as easy as possible.'

'That's,' he didn't want to confirm her observations. 'Than what about our parents?'

Ursa's lips pressed together as the man that helped protect her, in his own misguided way, came to the surface of her mind. 'I would find a way to be by our Father's side.'

Ventus noticed that she only said father and wondered what her thoughts were about their mother, 'What about—-'

'You look a lot like him,' she cut him off knowing where he was heading with his next question, but stopping him. She was a topic of conversation that was never brought up. When she was little she had questioned why the pretty woman in the picture frame close to her father never visited her? Why her father never brought her up in conversations? Amistad skirted around the subject and the day of her departure, she understood why they never said anything about her or why she never once made an effort to see her. She was scared of her, ashamed of her appearance and what that could do to their family name. Her fists clenched tightly, who needed someone who didn't care about her. That was why she had Amistad, she loved and cared for her as a mother would and should.

Ventus noticed the sadness laced in her voice as she mentioned him, it seemed that the woman that made him smile, supported him and took care of him wasn't a topic of consideration. He tried to analyze the past six years and realized that his mother wasn't as effected as his father. Maybe at first she had been worried and more reserved than usually, but could she have been more worried of the revelation than the actual loss of her daughter. He knew that she had a mutation, Terra had told him so, but how far did it go for his mother to turn her back on her and fear people knowing. 'I am sorry,' he said.

Ursa looked at him and began to feel the corner of her lips turn down, 'Why, you should be happy to look like him. He is a handsome man,' she told him, but felt that the look of sadness in his blue hues were because of some other reason. A topic that she didn't want to breach and get into, so she needed to end this awkward conversation in the bud. 'Thank you for the puppy, I am sure that it was your idea and not Terra's.'

'If you are grateful, then why not give me a chance,' he offered.

'I feel that this common trait of ours is going to be a problem,' she referred to their stubbornness and refusal to give up. She studied the hopeful young man, unlike their older brother he was more charming and inviting, easy to talk to and get along with. It probably helped that his appearance echoed their father's. He had handsome facial features, brilliant blue hues and from the hair that slipped his cap, golden like their father. He was slightly shorter than Terra and his built was slim but toned, a take away that wasn't their father's. 'Fine, but don't think of sneaking in Terra or any other family member. This is an offer just for you and no one else.'

'You mean,' he took his cap off, revealing his golden mane, as if solidifying that he was their father's child.

She couldn't help but think that his hopeful look was that of a child entering a toy store and being told that he could have anything he so desired. 'Yes, but only for you and only every once in a while,' she reiterated and stated.

'Really?'

'Yes,' she answered and watched as his face lit up into a beautiful and cheerful smile.

'Yes,' he cheered happily. 'Will you also sing for me and tell me what happens in your next book?'

'How do you know I write?' She was startled by his sudden request.

'Namine is a super fan of your current book series. She introduced me to it and I enjoyed reading it, not as much as her though.'

'But I use a pen name.'

'Terra figured it out a few month's ago and told me after I heard you singing at the hospital.'

'Oh,' she mumbled softly and then realized they had been standing outside for a long time. 'Would you like to come in for something to drink? The weather's hot and I am sure standing out in the sun isn't much fun.'

His smile got wider, 'I would like that, just let me get the stuff out of the car.'

o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o

Amistad sighed as she looked up at the quiet manor, in its peaceful state. She knew that as soon as Ursa found out about their guest, she'd probably be upset. However, she looked over at her son, whom she couldn't leave behind or on his own. 'So this is your new home?'

'Yes,' she watched as he studied the darken manor.

'It's kind of isolated,' he looked back at the road the taxi just taken.

'Hopefully, the fresh air does you some good,' Amistad told him as she grabbed her bag off the ground and walked towards the front porch. 'I just hope that she isn't too upset with your arrival.'

'Humph, I though you said that this was your home too,' he grabbed his own luggage and followed after her.

'It is my home, but I am not the owner and my friend doesn't like unexpected guest.'

'Sounds like a prude,' he scoffed.

Amistad looked up at him as he joined her and glared at his comment before she slapped him on the back of the head, 'Oww,' he cried.

'Shh,' she reprimanded him for all the noise he was making, 'don't wake her up.' Amistad opened the door and heard a soft sound of barking in the distance. 'Oh, no.'

o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o

Ursa shifted in her covers as she opened sleepy hues to look over at her pup. 'Come here,' she called to the little black puppy. 'It's bed time,' she told him.

The puppy turned from the door to look at his sleepy mistress, before deciding to listen to her and go back to his bed beside hers. 'Good boy,' she lazily reached down and patted his head before going back to sleep again. If the alarm hadn't gone off it meant that either he was hyper sensitive and getting used to the noise of house or Amistad arrived unannounced. She was too tired to think properly, so she shrugged off the thought and fell asleep.
