No one slept that night.
The scent of rotting corpses began to fill the air.
Everyone had began to get to work. Blake stabbed the head of a fellow group member, making sure that they didn't turn. She let herself shut down, not letting herself feel anything in that moment. She did not care that the woman on the ground died. She did not care to see the scared look on her face. The way her cold, vacant eyes looked up at the sky. Blake told herself that this wasn't real. It was better than fully comprehending that she has stabbed the head of a dead woman.
Sure, she has experienced death. She is a doctor, so death comes with the job. However, stabbing someone in the head felt like she was the one killing them. Because of her, they are dead. There was no logic with that, she realizes. For some reason, she feels like that.Guilt sat on her chest as she continued to look at the woman. It was stupid to blame herself, but that seems to be the only thing she felt.
Was it guilt for being alive? Guilt for being a doctor and not being able to do anything to save them? Guilt for not reacting quickly last night to save them?
She was not sure.
With a sigh, she stood up from a crouching position to look around. Everyone were making sure that the people that died didn't turn.Others were beginning to get rid of the bodies, the group members and the ones from the dead.
Her gaze settled on a blonde beside her sister's body. She hasn't moved the entire night. Andrea remained on her knees, looking at her dead sister. Amy didn't deserve to die. She was too young for death, too filled with life. It was sad, heartbreaking to see that. Blake knows that if that happened to Rick, Shane or Carl, she would be like Andrea beside them. It is not good to think about that.
Blake tried her best to disassociate from this setting, from this situation. Thinking too much about this and feeling the emotions she is supposed to will bring her down. Last night, she had a moment of weakness. A moment where everything could have changed. Death was ready to take her. She was not going to die in vain, letting one of those things bite her and kill her. No, she is going to make it worth it. Death can't be meaningless, especially now. It has to count for something, for someone. Dying because she missed the old world was pathetic, weak. She is not weak. She can do this. She can survive.
Wiping the sweat from her forehead, the day was not kind to any of them. It was as if nothing happened. That the death that took place the night before had no affect to nature. The day had no remorse, no pity upon the men and women that moved beneath the sun. It was stupid to think that everything would pause at the sight of death. The world continues moving. Nothing will make that change.
Blake saw that she was done with her task and took a seat beside Shane. Rick has gone off somewhere, trying to communicate with that man that had saved him before. She didn't really care. She could only care about the present and the people around her.
Shane glanced at her briefly before he returned his attention to the blonde. Everyone was fixated on Andrea, waiting for something to happen. Andrea just sat beside her sister, mourning. It put everyone on edge, waiting for Amy to come back as one of those things. Seeing Andrea's state, no one knew if she was going to prevent Amy from turning. Lori and Carol had their eyes on the woman.
"You good?"
Blake bit her lip at that question before a smile grew on her face. It wasn't a genuine one. It was the type that one would use to hide their true feelings, a mask. It has been easier for her to do it over the years, especially when certain situations went wrong.
"Yeah, why wouldn't I be? I know everyone wants a taste of me" she joked as she turned to Shane. She knows he meant about last night, almost getting killed. She really didn't want to touch that subject. If she were to say her way of thinking, there will be an argument. That is just something she wants to avoid. She really wasn't in the mood for it. She just wants something else to take place. Talking about her mental health will not benefit anyone, so she will just toughen up.
Shane shook his head at her words, chuckling slightly at her words. "You know what I mean, Blake".
"Look, nothing happened. I am good. No bite or anything. I am fine", Blake turned to him to be met with his worried gaze. Biting her lip, she placed her hand on his arm and leaned forward. In a hushed manner, she spoke. "I am good. You do not need to worry about me", she patted his shoulder before backing off a bit. Shane still had a questionable look on his face, not fully trustingher word. However, right now wasn't the time to dwell on that issue.
"I will always worry about you"
At his words, Blake sighed. She wished he didn't have to. She is a big girl. She can take care of herself, but she didn't tell him that. He is too stubborn to listen to that. Rather, they just sat in silence to take a moment to take things easy. She could see Andrea from here and the guys moving the bodies to the fire.
This is awful.
"She still won't move?". Rick walked up from behind them, noticing Andrea not moving from her place since the last time he checked. Leaning her head against Shane's shoulder, Blake answered.
"Nope. She has just sat there, not saying a word at all". Shane leaned his head against hers as they kept their eyes on the blonde. It was sad, and Blake would have been the same if either member of her family died, but she would like to think she would make sure not to have them turn. Blake would make sure they were not coming back as those monsters.
Lori eyed how close Shane and Blake. It was odd that they hadn't had any sort of romantic interaction. Blake is a beautiful woman, and Shane is handsome man. Why not be together? Even though there hadn't been any interaction between them that was romantic or sexual, a tinge of jealousy hit her. Seeing them so close, just as close as she used to be with him not so long ago. Did he easily forget about her? Lori shook her head at those thoughts and turned to her husband. "What do we do? We can't just leave Amy like that".
"What do you expect us to do? Shoot Amy from here?," Blake turned her gaze to her sister-in-law. Lori's nose flared a bit, getting irritated with Blake. Although, Blake made a simple question with no malice nor sarcasm. She wanted an answer to that. What did Lori expect us to do?
"We need to deal with it, same as the others", Shane sat up straight. Blake did the same and turne to Shane with an arched brow. "Really, just like that?", Blake crossed her arms against her chest as she looked at Shane before her gaze turned to Rick's to see that he agreed with Shane. Clenching her jaw, disagreeing with them, but she saw their point. It would be useless arguing with them, especially when they agreed. Shaking her head in disbelief, she stood up. "Fine, I will tell her how it is". Blake thought it be best, since she knows Andrea and they were kind of friends.
This was not the first time she had to deliver bad news. She recalls more than a handful of times where she had to the family of a patient that their loved one had died. It was the worst. She had to deliver the worst news in their life, and she knew that they would only view her as the woman that had ruined their life by those news. She had picked up some techniques on how to deliver the news, just from experience and seeing the way her attendings handled those situations. Taking a deep breath, she began to make her way towards Andrea.
The sound of gravel crunching beneath her feet filled her ears. She ignored the talking behind her, mostly due to her planning what she was going to say. There is no correct way to tell someone, Hey, we need to make sure that your sister doesn't come back as one of the dead, so mind if we stabbed her in the head? However, there are subtle ways to say that. Blake just needed to find the right words for that.
"Hey, Andrea--" Blake was cut off when Andrea turned to her with a gun aimed at her. Instantly, Blake stopped in her tracks. Her eyes solely on the gun. Okay, Blake did not expect this to happen. She could hear a few footsteps behind her, but she raised her hand to make them stop. She did not doubt it was Shane or Rick walking towards her. Blake can handle this. If not, she kind of gets what she wants. Not a good joke. Blake shifted her gaze to meet Andrea's eyes. Her eyes were hard, almost glaring at the medic. There was this dangerous look in her eyes, waiting for something to happen just so she could snap. Continue or back off? That is the question.
"I know what you are going through. I have felt your pain", Blake began as she began to kneel down, which was not a good idea due to the gravel, but she did it anyway. Andrea did not waiver in her stance. The gun followed Blake's movements. "I know that ache you feel in your chest. It is overwhelming, like you can't breathe. When you try to, it hurts". Blake kept her eyes on Andrea, rather than the gun. "I am sorry this has happened. It shouldn't have happened, not to someone as lively and wonderful like Amy".
Andrea tilted her head slightly, listening to Blake. " I remember thinking that she was too happy for my liking, always smiling and laughing. It was annoying, and I thought I was going to hate her. However, we talked one night, after everyone finished eating and had gone to bed, and we stayed up for hours talking. We talked about our favorite movies and books, and that turned into a Harry Potter discussion", Blake couldn't help but laugh at that. Andrea smiled tearfully at Blake's words before she slowly lowered her gun.
"Yeah, she loved Harry Potter. Her favorite character was between --"
"The Weasley twins and Luna Lovegood", Blake answered, recalling that conversation. Blake did not want to get emotional, but she couldn't help her eyes from tearing up. Andrea nodded at her words as she turned to look at her sister. Amy was so pale. The only color from her was from that walker bite on her neck, and the blood that was on her shirt. Blake moved to be beside Andrea, and she did not seem to mind.
"I just need a moment with her, that's all. I know what everyone is thinking, but this is the last time I will be able to see Amy. So, please... let me just be here for her", Andrea turned to the woman beside her, wanting to be left alone with her sister one last time. Biting her lip, Blake nodded before standing up and turned around to be met with everyone's gaze.
Blake shook her head as she approached the group. "She will do what needs to be done when the time comes", she stated while she crossed her arms against her chest. Andrea is not stupid; she will do what needs to be done when she is ready.
Daryl was the one that scoffed at her words, clearly doubting that. That annoyed Blake greatly, someone doubting her.
"What do you suggest, oh wise one?", she asked the hunter, facing him fully to see him. At the name, he rolled his eyes and took a step towards her. Blake stood there, facing him. She really was not in the mood to be challenged right now. It was very easy to get irritated as of late. Anything could just set her off.
"Take the shot. Clean, in the brain from here", he pointed towards Amy. "Hell, I can hit a turkey between the eyes from this distance".
"Yeah, well this is not a turkey, Daryl", Blake took a few steps towards him and they were less than a foot in distance between one another. Blake licked her lips, calming down slightly. She cannot lose her temper over something so miniscule. She changed her tone, a bit softer than the harsh one she used before. She reminded herself that Daryl was the one that saved her last night, even when she did not want to saved. She had to be grateful for it. "That's Andrea's sister, who died less than 12 hours ago. Just let her say goodbye".
Both of them held their gazes, not diverting to anything else. One would see this and see tension between them. However, Blake did not feel it or acknowledge it. She is just advocating for a friend that is hurting. If being with her sister for a few moments gives her closure, the so be it. The morale is already low, and it cannot go any lower -- not now. Daryl seemed to slowly get that as he looked at the younger Grimes. There was no anger, just understanding.
Rick reached for her arm, grabbing hold of her elbow to pull her back, since he felt that there may be a fight. She did not move, holding Daryl's stare. He pursed his lips, glanced at Amy before returning his gaze to Blake. Biting back a few comments, he simply scoffed and turned away. A relief sigh left her lips. Good, no one is going to go and attack the moment that Andrea is having with her sister. However, Rick and Shane had a few words to say about that.
Rick pulled her gently towards him, and she turned to see his brows furrowed with a hint of a frown on his face. That confused her, and it was obvious with her expression. A matching look appeared on her face as she looked at her brother. "What?"
"You sure this is a good idea?", he asked -- glancing towards where Andrea sat. Sighing, she nodded.
"She just needs a moment. I know she will handle it", she said confidently. Shane arched a brow at her words, still doubtful of the entire thing. The last thing is another walker around, and it would be easier to just stab Amy in the head to prevent that from happening than actually letting it happen. Their man power has lessen since last night, so dealing with another of the dead will take a toll on them.
"Are you sure? We don't have the strength to lose more people"
"We aren't losing anyone. We are just giving someone some time to grief. Wouldn't you give that to me, if it was Rick?"
Shane shook his head at her words. His hands on his waist as he thought things through.
"She has a gun, if you haven't noticed", Blake stated sarcastically as she looked at both men. "So, she can shoot Amy when she turns. If not, I'll hand it. No need to worry. Plus, it is only one Walker. We can handle that"
Both men still were unsure, but they trusted Blake, so they didn't argue. "Fine", Rick sighed as he looked at his sister.
Blake smiled slightly at his response before turning to Shane. The man simply gave her a short nod before patting Rick on the shoulder. "Alright, let's continue working. We need to get rid of the bodies".
Okay, I am feeling inspired. I have a lot of thoughts with this story. Tell me what you guys think, maybe some suggestions or overall opinion on the story. I am always open to some criticism or some praising :)
