Unlikely Partners Chapter 7
"Do you have any regrets?" Kim asked so softly, she was so tired.
"Getting deep Burgess?" Jay teased gently.
"Do you think they are going to find us?" she confessed in a soft voice. She was tired. She was scared. Her head ached, her body throbbed. It hurt to breathe. She couldn't feel her right arm.
"We're getting out of here. Our team isn't giving up and we're not giving up." "Breathe." He encouraged her, his hand rubbing her hand gently. Finally he interlocked hands with her smaller one.
Regardless of what he told Kim, he was worried. What if the team didn't find the van? What if this building is out of the district and no one heard Kim's message? What if they were too injured to survive much longer? All the what ifs and Kim's gentle breathing, and her head on his chest lulled him to sleep.
"What's that over there?" Kelly Severide shouted over the noises of the machines outside. Was it his imagination or was it a van?
"Is that a white van?" Matt Casey confirmed. Before they got everyone's hopes up they had to get closer. Climbing over a few more rocks they found the semi buried vehicle. Kelly shared a look with Matt, hoping to find their friends, and hoping to find them alive.
Matt was able to get to the passenger side of the van. Shining his flashlight in, he was stunned at the sight and motioned for Kelly to come over.
"How are we getting them out?" Kelly asked, switching into rescue mode.
Matt saw a broken window and peered inside. Kim and Jay. He couldn't believe it. But they weren't moving. He was able to get closer and saw both of their chests going up and down. He reached in to wake Jay.
"Jay!" Matt called in, reaching his arm in to shake him. At first Jay thought it was a dream. "Matt?" he questioned in shock.
"Yeah and Kelly too. You've got all of 51 and 21 upstairs ready for a great report." "How's Kim?" He asked about the brunette, resting next to him.
"She has a concussion, a broken collar bone, a few broken ribs. Her right arm is trapped under a boulder." Jay ran down the list of things concerning him. Kim's eyes fluttered open at that moment when she heard a voice that wasn't Jay. "Matt?" she asked, confused. "Am i dreaming?" she whispered.
"Yeah, we heard your message on Stella's radio." Kim could not believe their luck, even Jay was shocked. "Good job." he murmured, gently kissing the top of her head.
"Kelly, can we get Sylvie down here?" Matt wondered if she would be able to do it safely. These two would be stuck for some more time, and they needed some medical attention immediately.
"Matt?" Kim asked softly. "Hey, Burgess." he responded trying to keep them both awake. "Do you have your phone? Can I record something for Nicole and Zoe?" He knew it would make her less anxious, so he handed over his phone to his friend.
"Hey Nic, it's Kim. I'm sure by now you've heard from Hank or Trudy. I'm fine, Jay and I are waiting to be rescued so I am sure that as soon as we are out I will talk to you. I love you and Zoe so much, I couldn't ask for a better sister Nic. Don't worry about me too much, I promise. I will see you soon. Love you."
"Yeah, I will ask her to get harnessed up and I will get her down here as fast as possible. You stay with Kim and Jay." Kelly decided for the pair. "Go ahead and make the call, captain."
"Hey Chief" Captain Matt Casey called over the radio. Boden had been waiting impatiently for any news. He wanted to hear it first and then tell Hank. If it wasn't good news he did not want him to hear it over the radio.
"Go ahead Casey." Boden responded quietly. "We found them." Matt said fortunate that today was not ending in disaster.
