One Shot Challenges
Disclaimer: As always, I do not own the Arrowverse
Note: So after last prompt which didn't receive too many entries we said we were done with challenges, but then Supergirl gave us an idea and we wanted to see if this one would work. So, one more challenge.
Prompt: The Legion of Superheroes finds and rescues Kara from the Phantom Zone.
Blessing in Disguise
Mon-El sat in his seat on the bridge of the Legion of Superheroes' new ship, since their previous one had returned to the 21st century to be with Brainy. "Toy Man," Mon said to Winn who was at the controls. "Is the ship ready?"
"I've been working on these modifications for months," Winn said with a nod. "We're ready."
"Okay crew, we know our objective," Mon said to the group, looking around at his Legionnaires. "We're going into the Phantom Zone and we're not coming out until we have her. I think she's waited long enough for a rescue." There was a cheer and nods as everyone went into work. "Open the portal. Let's go."
A portal opened directly in front of them and the Legion ship entered the portal and appeared inside the Phantom Zone. "Are we safe from the Phantoms?" Mon asked as they floated over the many different phantom zone rocks.
"Our shields are holding," it was Lighting Lad, another member of the Legion of Superheroes. "Phantoms don't even sense us."
"Good, Toy Man, can you track her?" Mon asked.
"Scanning for Kryptonian life signatures," Winn said. "This feels so Star Trek."
"Winn," Mon said warningly, and Winn nodded as he looked back down at the computers.
"Going to let out a burst of yellow sun energy. Giving her back her powers will make it easier to track her. Luckily she should be the only Kryptonian here. All the others were in the prison ship," Winn said and he pushed several buttons and a large torpedo left the ship. It traveled away from them and then blasted into a large yellow burst. "Got a Kryptonian power signature…. Actually, I have two Kryptonians. With each other."
"I'll go down," Mon said as the ship moved over to where the Kryptonians life signs were coming from. "Imra, you're in charge until I get back." Imra, who had remained quiet, gave a nod as Mon left the ship and, using his Legion ring, flew down to the surface.
He found Kara sitting in a cave along with another man who was wearing the House of El symbol. Both seemed to be in a daze. "Kara!" Mon said, bending down and shaking her. Her eyes were glazed over, which Mon knew was an effect of the Phantoms. "Kara?" Mon shook her again and Kara moved her head.
"Another trick," Kara whispered.
"Kara, this is no trick, it's me," Mon said knowing he had to break her out of this. "Remember when I first came to Earth and was a spoiled rotten prince? You spent so much time on me, making me a better person. The person who could lead the Legion. And remember the last time we saw each other? On the balcony of the DEO. Both of us knowing I had to leave, but I didn't want to. All I wanted to do was tell you I love you and kiss you and stay with you forever. Kara. come back to me."
"Mon?" Kara whispered, blinking and her eyes changed back to normal. "Mon, you came for me." Kara put her arms around him.
"Of course, I came for you," Mon said. "Come on, the ship is waiting."
"My dad," Kara said turning around to the other Kryptonian, who's eyes were still glazed over. "Dad, we're leaving. Come on. Come back to me," The man eyes turned back to their normal.
"Leaving...? Kara," Zor said. "I feel… strong."
"We released some yellow sun energy," Mon said, putting and arm around Kara and holding out a hand to Zor. "If you'll come with me sir." Zor took the hand and Mon didn't wait a moment before flying both of them up to the legion ship.
…
Once back on the ship, Mon ordered Winn to leave the Phantom Zone and brought Kara and Zor to a medical area in the ship for them to be checked over. He waited patiently. "They need some rest and plenty of yellow sun," an A.I explained. "But they will be fine."
"Thank you," Mon said to the A.I. "So, what happen down there?" Mon was curious how they ended up in that cave.
"Lex... he shot me into the Phantom Zone. I found dad there and we were going to escape using the Anchor mom made, but then there was this 5th dimensional Imp," Kara explained, and Mon groaned. "Nyxly. I thought we were friends, but she…. I had to break the anchor to stop her from escaping and torturing those on Earth. Dad and I barely got out and then there were all these phantoms. We hitched a ride on one off the breaking rock to a safer place and got into that cave. Then… I don't know how long we stayed there in our fears until you showed up." Mon did though - once inside the cave the two were safe from the Phantoms coming after them, but they had already been effective by the Phantoms. The two sat there for a thousand years without even knowing it, the Phantom Zone not experiencing time the same way the rest of the universe did. The two were lucky they were even sane; maybe it was due with their Kryptonian minds and yellow sun. "Mon, you came back to rescue me?"
"I came to rescue you," Mon said taking Kara's hand. "But I didn't go back."
"What?" Kara asked.
"Kara, you've been in the Phantom Zone for a very long time. It's the 31st century," Mon explained.
"No, no, that's… not…" Kara paused, blinking.
"It is," Zor said, having been quiet and listening into the conversation. "We lost track of time in there, a lot of time."
Mon could see the look on Kara's face and he went to sit next to her, bringing her into a hug. "It's okay Kara, I'm here," Mon said holding her. "First we're going to bring you to the finest Kryptonian doctor. You know Argo survived and thrived? Krypton and Earth now have an alliance. And after you and your dad are thoroughly checked out by them, we'll figure out the next steps."
"You're not going anywhere?" Kara asked.
"Nowhere, I promise," Mon said holding her.
-Supergirl-
Back in 2021, Brainy and Nia came into the Tower, proudly holding a vial of blood.
"We have Kara's DNA now," Alex grinned, as Brainy and Nia held up the blood they received from the past, having transferred it from the Kryptonite rock to this vial in the Legion ship Braining used. "It's the last piece we need."
"Now we can go into the Phantom Zone," Lena added.
"I really wouldn't," a voice surprised them; they were shocked when Kara flew into the room. Her outfit was different from the last time they saw her - it was all blue still with red running around the costume. The most striking difference being behind the House of El symbol had a black background. It was very similar to the outfit the Clark, who looked like Ray Palmer, wore. "The Phantom Zone is not a nice place to be."
"Ka - Kara?" Alex said, shocked as she ran forward to hug Kara.
"But how?" Brainy said, looking her over and realizing she looked older than the last time they saw her. "You're in the Phantom Zone."
"Technically yes," Kara said as Alex pulled back. "But I was also rescued…"
"Mommy!" A little boy came running in and jumped on Kara, who caught him. "Mommy, I saw a car with wheels!"
"Didn't I tell you to stay with Uncle Winn?" Kara asked the boy, the group in the Tower confused.
"Sorry Kara," it was Winn coming into the Tower now.
"It's okay. He's a handful," Kara said to her friend. "Alexander, you see her." Kara pointed at her confused sister Alex. "That's my sister. Your Aunt Alex. Everyone, this is my son Alexander, named after his brave aunt."
"Aunt Alex," Alexander said, leaving Kara's arms and running at speed at Alex.
"Human!" Kara yelled as her son ran and grabbed him a moment before he charged at Alex and possibly crushed her. "Alexander El, she is human. Be careful."
"Yes mommy," Alexander said, and Kara put her son down and he hugged Alex. Alex, stunned, didn't know what to do but hug him back.
"Kara, maybe you should fill us in?" J'onn said, also confused but starting to get an idea of what had happened.
"In a thousand years I will be saved from the Phantom Zone by the Legion of Superheroes," Kara told them. "That was ten years ago for me."
"Ten years? But why didn't you come back sooner?" Alex asked, looking at her little sister. She was definitely older. Alex couldn't tell at first glance but she had definitely aged some since. Not as much as a human, considering Kryptonian DNA under the yellow sun.
"She wasn't allowed to," Winn said. "You remember the Time Bureau?"
"That was disbanded," J'onn said.
"In this time yes, but in the future the Legends rebuild it and rebrand it the Time Legends," Winn said. "And there are a lot of rules when it comes to time traveling- especially when it comes to changing the fate of certain people and especially when you're traveling back into your own timeline. The only reason why Kara is even allowed to be here right now is because the Time Legends decided, since her younger self is in the Phantom Zone, she could come here for a bit. To warn you."
"Warn us?" Kelly asked.
"Um…. Nia, could you take Alexander and show him some cool 21st century stuff?" Kara asked and Nia nodded, getting that Kara didn't want her son here.
"Sure," Nia said. "Come on Alexander."
"Yay!" Alexander said. "Can we go see one of those movies on a big screen? Those are gone, replaced by holographic movie telling..."
"Movies it is. I'll buy popcorn," Nia said, wondering what movies were out that she could take someone who couldn't be older than 5 or 6 to.
Once Nia and Alexander were gone, Kara turned to her former friends. "If you go into the Phantom Zone you all die," Kara said to them.
"No, that's not…" Lena started, but then paused. Kara was from the future.
"We found the wreckage of this Tower ship in the Phantom Zone," Winn said. "With your dead and mangled bodies within. The Phantom you're going to use to track Kara escapes and lets in his friends. They kill all of you as you try to fight back. The only reason your plan didn't kill Kara was because Kara and Zor had got themselves into the cave where we found them and were already under the Phantom's fear power. There was no point in going after her."
"Zor? You found your father in there?" J'onn asked, but before Kara could answer, Alex spoke.
"Well, now we know, we can…." Alex started.
"No, you have to stay out of the Zone," Kara said.
"But you're in there. Being tortured. I can't let…." Alex started.
"Yes, you can. Leave me be. I am not here to change my past. I was given permission to warn you because the Time Legends feel you surviving would be a positive change to the timeline that wouldn't create too big of a paradox, but I must remain where I am," Kara said. "Besides, I don't want you to save me."
"How could you not want me to save you?" Alex asked.
"If you save me," Kara said. "I never reunite with Mon. I never marry him and I never have my children. The me you see here, Alexander, my new little baby back at home, we pop out of existence." Alex should have known Mon was Alexander's father - the boy did look like him after all.
"But... you're my little sister. I'm meant to protect you," Alex stated.
"I am your little sister," Kara said, putting a hand on Alex. "And I am here asking you to let me go. It is not your job to protect me anymore. I relieve you of that burden placed on you when we were kids. I belong in the 31st century. I am happy, Alex. Please don't take my happiness away." Kara hugged Alex who hugged her back, Alex crying now.
"Can't you stay here?" Lena asked. "Get Mon and your other baby and live…?"
"Double Paradox," Brainy spoke up. "Two versions of the same person can't live in the same timeline. Kara can visit, since her double is in the Phantom Zone, but she cannot stay."
"Overall, we can't stop you from trying," Winn "All we can do is warn you. If you want to take the risk and try to change history, you can."
"You don't need me," Kara said. "You don't need Supergirl. You guys can take down Lex Luthor without me. Please, don't destroy my happiness."
"We said our part, we'll let you talk," Winn said,, giving Kara a nod and the two walked over onto the balcony of the Tower, giving their friends time to think over their plans.
"Now we know, we could change their past," Lena said. "Better reinforce the containment. We could save her."
"And do exactly what Kara just asked us not to?" Kelly asked. "Get rid of her kids. Get rid of the life she loves." Kelly turned to Alex who seemed numbed. "Could you really know your sister found happiness and you took it away? If we save her, she could never find what she has in the 31st century here."
"And we could still all end up dying," J'onn added.
"Especially if Kara being in the Phantom Zone is a fixed point," Brainy pointed out. "If time doesn't want her saved until the Legion can save her, time will make sure anything we do fails. I would say the probability of us saving Kara is at 5 percent."
"Alex, it's up to you," J'onn said turning to Alex. "Do you want to go?"
Alex looked at the vial of blood in her hands; Kara's blood they had gotten from the past. She had to make a choice now.
…
"Did we do the right thing coming here?" Kara asked Winn as they stood there, overlooking National City. "I want to save them…. but if they go and change time….. I can't…"
"Kara," Winn said. "Everything will be okay." Winn brought Kara into a hug.
Alex walked out to them a few minutes later and held the vial of Kara's blood out to her. "Take it, so I am never tempted again," Alex said, and Kara took the vial and then Alex hugged Kara. "I'm going to miss you."
"I miss you too," Kara said. "But you can have a life here now. And I'll make sure to look up all the great things you do with your life when I get back."
"How long can you stay?" Alex asked. "I want to get to know my nephew."
"Why do you think I brought him?" Kara asked.
"Because he stowaway," Winn pointed out, and Kara hit him. "Sorry." Alex smiled as Kara put an arm around her and they went to go find Nia and Alexander.
….
That night, Alex walked into the apartment she shared with Kelly. "She's gone," Alex said to Kelly. "Went back to the 31st century."
"She went home," Kelly said, and Alex nodded and then started to cry. Kelly sat next to her and brought her into a hug. "She's safe."
"In the future. There's a version of her I have to let be tortured," Alex said.
"Because she asked you to leave that version alone," Kelly reminded Alex. "You did what you needed to do for your little sister. You did the right thing, Alex. And now we can have a life together." Kelly and Alex sat there hugging each other and Kelly let Alex cry into her. She was mourning the loss of her sister, even if she knew her sister was alive and happy in some place in time.
-Supergirl-
Kara walked into her home in the 31st century with Alexander.
"There he is," Mon said. "When I couldn't find him, I figured he went with you and Winn." Mon hugged his son and then told him to go play in his room. "So?"
"They didn't go," Kara said.
"I know," Mon said with a smile. "Time changed. They had a good life. Defeated Lex much earlier than he was taken down before. I was asking how you handled this?"
"It was nice seeing them. Saying goodbye to them," Kara said as she sat beside Mon and leaned into him. "But I knew I wanted back here. Back to you."
"I'm glad you found your way back to me," Mon said, kissing Kara. "And your dad wants us over this weekend."
"I'll call him and tell him we're coming," Kara said and then heard a cry. "After I take care of her."
"I can," Mon said, going to get up but Kara pushed him back down and kissed his cheek.
"It's my turn," Kara said getting up and giving her husband a smile before going to take care of her baby. The Phantom Zone had ended up being a blessing in disguise for her.
Post Chapter Note: Well, I hope you like my entry into this prompt. As always, prompt and rule below. You have until Supergirl comes back to add one - thats mid-August.
Prompt: The Legion of Superheroes find and rescue Kara from the Phantom Zone.
Rules:
1. It can be as long as you want but it needs to be at least 500 words to be able to be a story.
2. The direction of the story is, of course, your choice, but you have to follow the prompt. Kara has to be in the Phantom Zone until the Legion of Superheroes saves her. Whether or not anyone else is with her is your choice.
3. Time isn't an issue in the Phantom Zone, as demonstrated in the show, so Kara isn't stuck in the Zone for 1,000 years, BUT this is up to you; she can wait for a long time in the Zone or not.
4. You can add a romance to it if you want, or you don't have to. Completely your choice.
5. You have to post it on FanFiction or Archive and send us a link.
As for time limits on this, you have until Supergirl returns, so mid-August.
Hope to see great entries.
Please REVIEW.
