I warned you that I was a liar.
I've always been one my whole life. There isn't anyone I haven't lied to—my mother, my boss, even my friends. I can't believe that I have managed to get away with it for so long.
I limped down the road, squinting at the early morning sun as I slapped my cane repeatedly on the asphalt. I hated my cane, but I'd had it since I was viciously attacked as a child. I must stop Fenrir Greyback before more children end up like me. I sighed as I couldn't breathe and my leg burned, but I ignored it. I was already late and I didn't want to anger my boss even more because he hated it when people are late. My name is Remus Lupin.
I breathed sharply as I walked up to the old building that housed my office. It wasn't much to look at. It was crumbling, the paint was peeling off and vines were crisscrossing around the bottom of it and over the windows.
I was glad that no one was around me. I walked up to the door, ignoring the vines and weeds, and knocked on the old wood. I began to fidget as I waited for it to open, not wanting to be caught working for a criminal. Finally, after a few seconds, it opened.
"Romulus. You're late. Get in here," Peter Pettigrew snapped at me, pulling me into the building. "Where have you been? Do you know what he would say to me if he found out that I let you in late?"
I didn't respond. Around here, I was known as the silent wolf because I did not speak a whole lot. All they'd heard was the story of how I lost my leg to a wolf attack. I might have been a liar, but that part was true. I nodded and walked away from him.
The boss's door was a lot cleaner than the rest of the building, probably because of his ego. I took a deep breath before I knocked.
The door opened a little, and I heard him laughing. He had a stupid laugh, but I couldn't say that to his face because I didn't want my cover to be blown. He laughed again before he opened the door all the way. My eyes met his as he pulled me in. My boss was aging. He had brown hair that was greying at the temples and amber eyes that matched my own.
"There you are, Romulus. Where the hell have you been?" he asked, putting his hands on my shoulders and pushing me down in the chair across from his desk. I picked my words carefully. I didn't want him getting mad. Bad things happened when he got mad.
"I was having pain in my leg, sir, Greyback," I said.
He nodded and smiled at me. His smile made me shiver. It made me think of my childhood with him; a thought I didn't want creeping through my brain.
"Pain in your leg?" he asked, standing up and running his hand through his hair.
I had to grip my cane to stop my hand from shaking. I nodded slowly, knowing that he might find out about who I really am.
"It isn't easy walking with only one leg, sir," I said with false calm. I kept my eyes on the floor as he looked at me. My hand gripped my cane tighter as he laughed a little, making me look up at him. He laughed again, and a chill ran down my spine.
"Yes, I understand. Now, go get my papers," he demanded.
I didn't like working here, but I had to. I had to stop him from taking more kids. The sad thing was, I didn't even know where they were being held.
"Romulus?"
I looked up from my desk to see Grayback watching me.
"Yes, sir?" I couldn't look at him as he walked over.
"Do you know why we look for young kids to take care of?" he asked in a slow voice.
I nodded and shivered when his hand pressed into my shoulder. "So that they'll be ready for what's to come, sir."
He laughed and tapped my shoulder. I knew I should keep my mouth shut or else he would find out, but I needed to blend in.
"We're really talking today, aren't we, wolf?"
I didn't respond to that, but when his hand left my shoulder, I nodded and I started to play with my cane.
"Can I ask you a question, sir?" I asked, knowing that something might go wrong. He nodded. "What do you do with the kids?"
He gave me a dark smile and nodded.
"Well, if you must know. I find kids like me. My little wolves," he said with a smile. "You know, you'd fit right in with your amber eyes."
He laughed. I didn't laugh back.
"Yeah," I replied.
I let out a breath as I sat at my desk looking over the notes that I had taken over the past year. It had been a long day and I was glad to be finally home. I closed my eyes when my phone rang. I didn't answer it straight away. Instead, I listened to the ringtone. After a few minutes, I picked it up.
"Remus Lupin's house. This is Remus speaking."
"Remus. Hello, how is everything?" my real boss, Albus, asked.
"We need to act now, sir," I told him, looking over my notes.
"Are you sure? James and Sirius have not found the children yet. We don't even know if there are any kids," Albus said. I sighed and looked out the window at the rain.
"I'm sure, sir. I know why he's doing this. I just don't know how to stop him, I'm only a guy with one leg."
"You can do this. Be careful, Remus," he told me before I hung up.
I wasn't nervous, but as I walked up to the building, on time today, my leg started to shake. I wanted to sit or run away, but I knew that I had to do this. Taking a deep breath, I knocked with a shaky hand. Peter opened the door as usual, but I saw something in his eyes. I couldn't place what it was.
"Romulus, get in here. Something's wrong," Peter said, opening the door all the way. He was slouched over and playing with his hands.
"What happened?" I asked, my voice shaking with fear. I thought I knew what was going on, but I had to make sure.
"A new guy barged in today saying that the boss is going to be seen by someone from the police," Peter cried, and I could not help but smile a little. "What am I going to do?"
Looking ill, Peter ran off into the cold building. I couldn't help but laugh at his cowardice before I headed to my boss's door.
When I got there, the door was open and I saw him packing his desk and muttering to himself. I hid a smile as I knocked.
"Sir?" I asked looking around, faking my confusion. Inside, I was cheering and preparing myself for what was to come.
"Romulus, get in here. Help me pack. They found us."
I raised an eyebrow.
"What are we going to do, sir?" I asked, looking down at my false leg.
He didn't answer as I heard barking. My whole body tensed, and I gripped my cane, looking over at Greyback who stared at me.
"Sorry," I muttered, looking down to the floor. My mind cleared. "I don't like dogs."
He nodded and started packing again.
I didn't move from my spot. "Mostly wolves," I added a little louder.
Greyback looked at me and raised his eyebrows.
"That's nice, wolf, but why don't you help me!" Greyback snapped.
I shook my head and took a deep breath.
"I'm not your wolf. I was never your wolf. You killed my father and your stupid wolf pet, or whatever you called it, took my leg!" I yelled before I hit him with my cane, making him fall onto the boxes.
"Romulus. What the hell are you doing?" he snapped at me as he picked himself off the floor. I, however, didn't say anything as I walked over to his phone and called my boss.
"That's not my name. My name is Remus Lupin," I said as I waited for Albus to pick up. "Sir, I've got him. I need backup," My eyes locked onto his as he walked over to me.
He grabbed my cane from my hand, and I fell over, dropping the phone. It hit the side of the desk. I grabbed it quickly. "Can you hurry, sir?" I asked before I stood, using the desk to keep myself stable. But Greyback hit my fake leg, and I fell again.
"Backup. I don't think you need that, Wolfy," he said before he hit me in the head making my vision go fuzzy.
I woke to Greyback yelling and screaming.
"You can't do this to me!" he yelled.
I rubbed my head and looked around to see Albus holding Greyback's hands behind his back.
"Ow," I cried as someone helped me to my feet, but I was having a hard time seeing them. They handed me my cane and I nodded my thanks before walking over to Greyback.
"I think we can do this, sir," I said, laughing a little before I taped his shoulder with my free hand and smiled. I then laughed and sat down in a nearby chair.
"You really believe you'll be safe?" he yelled at me. However, he looked at me when we locked eyes again. His eyes fell to the ground as if he saw the pain in them.
I hope my father is proud of me. I know that I'm proud of myself for this.
