When Rebecca was leaving the appointment this time, she returned with Mac no problems. "Hey dad, mind if I go out on my own for a bit? I was just thinking of heading down to the theatre," she pondered. Mac looked at her concerned and she chuckled. "I'm fine. Even incompetents get to do some things alone. Going to the movies is one of them."
"Fine but just to the theatre and back," he answered pulling out a few bills and handing them over. "Since you are not to have the card in your name, a little cash to get you a ticket and some snacks." As she threw it in a small wallet, she quickly went to change and then walked out with the wallet. Stella had seen the whole thing and looked at Mac concerned. "She noted a little movie theatre just up the road from my apartment building. She's going alone and already showed me the movie she wants to see."
"It's not that. It's just letting her out there alone right now. She's 23 but has to pretend she's not well. What if it actually gets to her?" Mac looked at Stella worried and she nodded at him. "We have to consider that she might get ill in her own way." Mac stood up and looked at the time on his phone.
"She showed me the showtimes and which one she was seeing. She's in a theatre just up the road from here," he explained calmly looking at her. "I'll have Flack swing by the theatre near the time the show ends and then he can monitor her."
When the two hours passed, Flack watched the theatre and then saw Rebecca walking out. He was about to go to her and then noticed a cop driving and she hadn't even noticed as she walked onto the road and went for a tumble over the vehicle and onto the ground. He ran over to her and the other officer got out. "Flack," he greeted surprised.
"Officer Langston," he greeted back as he looked over Rebecca and helped her sit up before dialling Mac's phone. "Yeah it's me boss. Rebecca just got hit by a car. She was jaywalking and got struck but not too seriously. We're still calling medics down here to take her to the ER and get checked over. Yeah I'll go with her," he answered.
"You are a lucky kid," Langston began before she scoffed at him. "You are certainly filled with attitude to spare," he noted before she snarled at him and then Flack glared at her and she rolled her eyes at the taller dark haired cop.
"I'm fine and yet you people have to call an ambulance," she muttered and Flack looked at her but she shook her head at him.
Langston looked at Flack and he scoffed looking at Rebecca. "You're lucky your dad didn't come down here himself. I barely persuaded him to wait for us to arrive at the ER and for Dr Hunter to look you over. Yes I arranged that much. She agreed that with your condition she should be the only one seeing you."
As the ambulance arrived, Rebecca groaned and looked at Flack. "I'm fine. I just took a little spill," she answered. Flack smacked her up the back of the head and she grunted in pain. "Look I'm sorry I didn't look but last I checked I didn't commit a federal crime."
"No but you have your dad worried sick. Stella too," Flack began and she rolled her eyes. "Don't roll your eyes at me. They both are blowing my phone up knowing your's was crushed to kingdom come by the traffic." He was about to continue before the phone rang. "Speak of," he warned answering it. "Yeah she's still conscious and she's full of attitude. Not cooperating with EMS or even Officer Langston. I'm used to her lack of cooperation to me." He then handed the phone to Rebecca after a few minutes. "He's not happy."
"Dad they're overreacting. I'm fine. Just a little tumble over a car."
"Rebecca Claire! You are damn well lucky to have survived that," he snapped annoyed while holding his hair and Stella looked at him worried. "I've so far heard you are being less than cooperative. You will cooperate with anything your brother, Officer Langston or the EMTs request or you will feel the consequences."
"But dad," she responded and he then made a small sound over the phone that made her make a small sound. "Okay I promise. I'll cooperate with them," she responded.
"Good. I'll see you in the ER once they've cleared you. Sheldon also has words for you when we arrive." As Flack hung up he had to admit Rebecca looked like she had been scolded like a naughty school girl and she seemed to finally cooperate.
"She's your sister?" Officer Langston was confused. He knew about Sam Flack but not this one but it was clear that to an extent she respected the officer that was higher in rank than Langston. Flack gave a small hand motion explaining it was a 50/50 thing.
"Rebecca's father treats a few of us like his kids. We get held to high standards. Parental love is abundant but so are the standards. I met Rebecca a few times but this was the first time I'd seen her in years. She had a mental breakdown after her appointment a couple days ago and I was there for that. But this was the first time Mac let her out on her own. If it's just up the road, he doesn't fear too much."
"I'm sure that's just changed," Langston answered and Flack nodded as the ambulance was about to leave and he got in with her and held her hand gently. She glared at him and he smiled guiltily knowing that Mac was the only reason she had to go by EMS. That and her cover.
When Mac and Stella arrived with Hawkes they walked over to Flack. "If you can't hear, the cooperation died the moment the psychiatrist showed up." Hawkes snickered at that and Flack had to chuckle at the imagery of it. Even Stella laughed knowing what they found funny. Rebecca was a quiet and helpful woman most days. Bring a shrink near her? Well quiet became deadly.
"Mac," Aubrey greeted walking over and he hurried over to see her. "I heard from Flack about Rebecca. She's physically okay. A little bruised but to be expected when she gets tossed over a car and lands head first. We have people checking for a concussion and a psychiatrist with her. What we have states," she began before Mac put a hand up.
"How my daughter's attempted to kill herself in a plethora of ways before I gained custody, yes," he answered as he walked back with Hawkes and saw Rebecca trying to shove away the psychiatrist. "Rebecca," he began and she glared at him. "What did you agree to?"
"Dad I didn't try to kill myself! I just accidently got hit," she insisted. Mac looked at her and then saw Hawkes walk over and glance in her eyes with his light. "I'm fine," she muttered swatting at his hands, although he easily grabbed both her wrists and held them on her lap.
"They are right. No concussion," he answered.
"I'll have a word with her psychiatrist and then hopefully after that we can head out," he answered walking into another room with the Psychiatrist. "I'm so sorry about Rebecca. Today was one of her appointments with her new psychiatrist. I know that's no excuse but I can't think of what would possibly make Rebecca want to go and do something like that. I think this was just an accident."
"I'm sure. From what I saw though she looked to be getting tired," she began. Mac nodded knowing he had shown Rebecca a daily schedule and albeit a few little conflicts of interest, she obeyed her schedule as Rebecca Conrad-Taylor.
"Yes. Rebecca's usually sticking to a routine and it's almost her bedtime," he explained honestly. Rebecca Conrad-Taylor schedule always ended by 7:30 just due to her file. Mac and Stella knew Rebecca didn't care as she started to deal with more strenuous tasks for the undercover mission.
"Well let's get to your daughter and finish up with her. I don't want to be the cause of her routine being messed with," she assured. As Rebecca and Hawkes saw the doctor walking in they both stood straight. "I just need a few words with Rebecca and then you all are free to get out of here."
"I'll remain here. Hawkes can you go get the car ready?" He nodded knowing that Rebecca would be done soon. "You," he began looking at Rebecca. "You answer everything that she asks and then we can get home." She nodded and then as the psychiatrist kept asking questions, she looked annoyed and bored.
"Well from the looks of it she is safe to go home. But Rebecca?" The woman handed Mac a card and then looked at her. "If you ever need someone to talk to, your dad has my card." She nodded and as soon as she climbed off the table, she followed Mac and got into the car.
"What were you thinking Rebecca? Jaywalking?" He was mad and nobody ever dared to lie to an angry Mac Taylor. "You were lucky you weren't concussed or worse killed," he snapped and she looked straight ahead. "You have a lot of explaining to do to Stella when we get back. She was worried sick!"
"I'm fine though."
"Yeah but it doesn't change the fact that you could have been in the ER for much longer," he answered looking at her. "You have zero regard for your own safety and that needs to change. Even before when you weren't undercover. You were the one who ran ahead and took on the killers so then Flack didn't."
"Yeah but it didn't change that in the end they were brought to justice," she responded before groaning in pain as Mac slammed on the brakes. "Look I get it. More mindfulness to my safety. I promise. Trust me if you didn't get it through the thick skull, Stella will in under 5," she promised.
"Good," he answered as they walked inside. When Stella saw them she ran over and hugged Rebecca. "She's fine. No concussion and no signs of any extreme head trauma. Doctors said she just needs some rest," he promised.
"You are very lucky to be alive," Stella warned her.
"I know. I got the whole my life was lucky lecture all the way home."
"You won't stop hearing it if you don't get it through your head to keep an eye on what is around you," Stella answered looking at her. "Go to bed. You have more things to get done tomorrow." She nodded and as she went to bed, Stella looked at the closed door. "She never did that before."
"No. Something got to her head and she wasn't looking. Even in the ER once I showed up, she shut down."
"Think that psychiatrist has something to do with it?"
"Not sure. Need more information," he answered as he looked at the records they pulled. "Have we put Rebecca on any watches? As in Rebecca Manx?"
"She's on monitoring. We haven't ever seen anything but her behaviour now is concerning me as it seems to be more than just the undercover story. Her nightmare still rings in my mind clearly. Her begging her dad to stop. What has he done to her?"
"Probably something that she doesn't want us hearing about," he answered as they went to bed themselves. Mac feared waking up in the middle of the night again for Rebecca as it was clear her own demons were bubbling to the surface even though she was burying them. As he laid down he grabbed the picture of him, Rebecca and Stella at the Christmas party and had to chuckle at it. Rebecca dressed even more formal for the party than he thought she would. Instead of a low cut dress like he expected she was in a long sleeve modest cut red dress that had a white trim at the bottom and she even had white gloves on and had her hair styled for the event. "Oh beautiful. What do you hide beneath all this? Let us in for once."
