Second Chances

Chapter 8

A year later, after a lot of physical therapy; Kaitlyn was on the mend and doing very well. She was currently working on getting her GED and she and Mike had developed a close and loving relationship. She depended on Mike and Maddie and Mike would have been lost without her. Daily walks on the beach and plenty of time just talking. It was exactly what their relationship needed.

Maddie had moved in and as soon as Mike retired, they surprised everybody by getting married and announcing they were expecting twins. Mike and Maddie were thrilled, but Kaitlyn was over the moon happy and so when Maddie's doctor told her they would be able to have another person in the delivery room, Kaitlyn was her choice. Normally, Mike would have balked but he was thrilled to share the experience with his oldest daughter and as she watched him holding his youngest daughter, she gave him a big smile.

"Was this how you were when I was born?" Kaitlyn asked quietly. Maddie was sound asleep and Mike was in charge of taking care of little Anna and Andrew.

"Not exactly. I'd never held a baby before and was terrified I'd drop you or squeeze you too hard. Least Anna has the benefit of my experience." Mike answered.

"Anna is really lucky." Kaitlyn said as Anna wrapped her hand around Kaitlyn's hand.

"Lucky to have you as a big sister." Mike told her and kissed to top of her head.

"Mom would be really happy. Hannah and Lucas too." Kaitlyn remarked.

"Yeah, I think they would. Just know; you are still a huge part of this family and we love you so, so much." Mike said.

"I love you guys too." Kaitlyn said. Mike smiled at her and passed Anna to her so he could pick Andrew up. The baby boy needed a diaper change and to be cuddled until his mommy woke up. Mike changed the diaper and settled next to Kaitlyn with Andrew, waiting on Maddie to wake up; thankful for how everything turned out. He had a beautiful wife, two new babies and a relationship with his oldest daughter a lot of people envied. Sure, he missed Christine, Hannah and Lucas. That would never go away and there were bad days, but he had a good life. It all worked for him.

I realized I hadn't updated in forever, so it was time to bring it to an end. Thanks to all who have read and reviewed.
