For the third night in a row, a nightmare had rampaged through his mind and this one had to be the most disturbing. He was on the move through the corridors of CTU with his gun drawn and an alarm warning others of the threat. Out of nowhere, Michelle appeared and told him to stop and drop the gun. Instead, he aimed at her head and fired. Continuing on as if nothing had happened, he seemed to be fast approaching the parking lot. It was only a few seconds later before he killed again, a guard who had tried to stop him. Reaching the parking lot, he ran to his car and was about to drive off when a bullet smashed the side window. Looking over and seeing Tony pointing a gun at him, he shot Tony as well before driving off. That was all that there was before it turned black.
Hoping that the dream would vanish from his mind soon, Alex rushed to the bathroom. There he splashed cold water onto his face almost until his skin felt numb. Despite the hope, he couldn't help but wonder why he had killed Michelle, the guard and Tony. He considered calling the therapist he had seen a few years ago but dismissed the idea. CTU would find out and that would only make things worse for himself.
What happened before the dream began? Am I a mole or terrorist in this scenario? I seem very willing and able to kill so that I can escape. I can only hope that these aren't some sort of horrific predictions of my future self.
Arriving at CTU, he saw Kim as he climbed out of his car. They talked for a few moments as they made their way into the main building.
"Are the dreams still happening?" Kim asked and Alex nodded in reply. Although she knew of the dreams, he had not gone into too much detail about them. After all, one involved him helping her mother's killer escape. Another showed him becoming her father's murderer. She at least hadn't asked for details, as if she had a good idea already.
"I hope they stop soon, they're always so vivid," Alex replied. He wondered if any of them would ever come true. The possibility was a disturbing one to him.
"I'm sure they will once things get better," Kim spoke, feeling the urge to hug or kiss him. Their feelings were growing stronger by the day. Jack's resistance wasn't waning and it looked as defiant as ever.
I wish he could give us a chance. He knows that I'm no terrorist or mole and that I'm nothing like Nina. He's even said before that I shouldn't feel guilty for the things she's done. Yet it seems like he is finding me guilty by association.
As time advanced, Alex began to get the terrible feeling that it was going to be one of those days. It had now been three years since the day they stopped the nuke and four since Teri's murder. He felt as if the universe had decided to give them another dose of harrowing trauma. The dreams might as well be some sort of warning system leading up to the long day.
Jack was back under with the Salazar cartel and there was a developing problem for CTU. An auction of a dangerous biological weapon, the Cordilla virus. Worth hundreds of millions, it had the potential to wipe out entire cities if released.
"We know that the second buyer arrived in Mexico earlier today," Adam informed the group. He was about to change the slide before Tony tried in vain to stop him. Alex and Kim both stared at the passport photograph in shock. Things were about to get very tense down in Mexico.
Nina's the second bidder?! Oh no, this is not going to end well!
Kim fled the room and Alex followed her, hearing whispers as he left. He could only wonder how much of a gossip that technician who saw them kiss was. Both he and Kim walked straight into a nearby room.
"She's there with my Dad, Alex!" A panicked Kim spoke as they hugged.
"He'll know how to handle her," Alex assured her. Shocked at her involvement, he wasn't surprised. She always seemed to be a vital piece of the puzzle and an ever-increasing one too. How on Earth had she gone from information broker to buying biological weapons?
"What if they bring her back here? I don't want her anywhere near me," Kim whispered as memories of that night of her mother's murder flooded her mind. Horrified by the prospect of seeing Nina Myers once more, she was glad to have Alex there. As for Alex, his mind was full of the dreams he had been having - of the dream where he surrendered to Nina in the parking lot. The dream where he shot Jack to prove that he had changed sides. The dream where he made a deadly escape from CTU for reasons he didn't know.
"We'll do everything we can to stop her harming anyone, she won't get away with it this time," Alex replied. How true that was, he had no idea. Nina always seemed to find some hole to slip through.
A whole drama had unfolded in Mexico and was now drawing to a close inside CTU itself. As he ran down the corridor, Alex knew that this was no dream but a stark reality. Nina was loose in the building and that meant mortal danger for everyone else. The alarm had been all he could hear before a gunshot echoed from a short distance away. The sudden silence was painful and he froze in place as he contemplated what had happened. He began moving again, in the direction of the shot, only for three more to ring out. Running into the tech room, he soon found out what had gone down.
"I'm sorry, Alex, I had no choice," Jack spoke as he noticed him enter the room. Despite their recent tensions, Jack still considered Alex a good friend and felt bad for him.
"It's okay," Alex replied as he looked with mixed feelings at the greying face of his sister. He was glad that she could no longer harm anyone, but he was sad that this was how his sister's life ended. He had never understood her actions or why she had taken such a path, and now he likely never would. Even if she had no cause, he was sure of one thing. Her motives were more complex and multi-faceted than simple greed.
"She was going to shoot Kim, I had to protect my daughter," Jack told him. If he had been a little slower in getting there, things could have been very different.
At least she can't cause any more harm anymore. Yet will the suspicions about me end, or will they carry on as if Nina was still alive?
Alex crouched down and closed Nina's eyes with a gentleness that was more for him than her. He hoped that her death would bring closure to everyone including himself. Standing back up, he left the room, leaving Jack alone to await Chappelle's arrival at the scene. He soon found Kim and the pair embraced.
"She's dead, isn't she? I'm so sorry, Alex," Kim whispered as they hugged. She felt relief that Nina was no longer able to harm anyone as well as sadness for Alex in losing his sister. Still, she had a nagging feeling that her death might not have been all that necessary.
"She is, yeah," Alex replied. He could only wonder how he would have reacted to seeing Nina pointing a gun at Kim.
What does this mean for us now? Will Jack be more open to us being together, or will he continue to oppose it all together? I guess we'll not know for a while.
Alex surveyed the wreckage of the last day, now that the threat was over. He was currently the Acting Director of CTU although there was little he could do at that moment in time. Sighing, he leaned against what until a few hours before had been Tony's desk. A thought came into his head - now, even the third dream couldn't come true - and he tried to push it away. Meanwhile, Kim had entered the office, and she leaned on the desk with him. For a few moments, there was silence before Alex broke it.
"What if we left and never looked back?" Alex spoke as he considered the idea. It sounded good to him, leaving behind everything and starting a new life elsewhere. Kim looked at him and smiled.
"My heart says that we should go for it, but my head says that we should plan it out first," she replied.
It would be so much better than this. We could go anywhere in the country or outside of it, cut ties with our current lives and start fresh somewhere. I wouldn't have to be the brother of a terrorist, nor would I have to feel any obligations towards CTU.
Shortly afterwards, the replacement had arrived and Alex was free to go. He left as soon as he could, not wanting to spend more time at CTU after everything that had happened.
The next day, Alex was back at CTU with some reluctance. His replacement, Erin O'Driscoll, wanted to see him. Entering her office, he assumed that it had something to do with his future at the agency.
"As you know, I have the task of seeing where we can improve as an agency," O'Driscoll spoke as he sat down. She then pulled out a file and dropped it onto the table.
"This is an investigation into you that began recently. I'm not making any judgements until I've read this, but I am someone who will do what is best for the agency," she continued. Alex knew then that nothing was going to change, whilst the file looked even bigger than he thought. Did they have something else on him that Chappelle had declined to mention?
"I'm going to suspend you for two weeks whilst I investigate the contents of this file. I hope you know it's nothing personal, Alex," she finished, and he could only nod in reply.
Walking into the bullpen, he considered his options. His phone rang, interrupting his thoughts. Kim was the caller, and the first thing she said would change everything.
"Alex, my heart won the argument"
