Chapter 4
The Man on the Moon
(Part I)
Celeste drove until the sun broke through the horizon. She went to every alleyway, bar, club, hideout, pick up point Klaus has been to or she could think of and nothing. Not one thing. She could feel he was definitely alive, thank goodness, but he was not in the City.
Did he get on a bus and leave? Klaus has definitely been more of a flyer than a fighter, but taking off from two people when his siblings were there to fight seems very uncharacteristic of him. He would have hidden.
They must have taken him.
Celeste wants to go an search the outer limits of the City, but Diego's car is almost out of gas.
And so is Celeste.
She drives back to the Academy. Her ankle is still sore, but she's able to walk in it better after a night of not using it.
She opens the doors and the air is stiff. Something uncomfortable and sad has happened.
No. No more. Celeste feels like a mirror with a growing crack. She feels out with the little she has left after feeling out and searching all night and she there is Allison and Luther up on the second floor landing. Having a bit of an emotional moment. And Diego is sulking in his room. He's done something.
She chooses to ignore all of that. No more trying to help them. None of them are helping her find Klaus, who they have known longer! She needs to eat, nap, and get back out there.
She sinks down to the kitchen and fixes a bowl of cereal. She puts some Brahms on the record player and unwinds as much as she can.
Music might be the biggest thing to help her recharge. She automatically feels what everyone else is feeling she has a hard time discerning what she is feeling. Music helps her feel her pulse. She feels an emotion releasing from her stomach. The wave of everything that has happened in these short compact days hitting her face, about to leak out from her eyes when-
She feels Diego make his way down the stairs.
Without even thinking, she gets up, turns off the music, and her feelings go back down and hideaway somewhere in her stomach. Or another dimension. And then she thinks of Ben and wishes he was here. Ben. Maybe he's with Klaus. A wave of relief floods her and she's able to sit up straighter as Diego enters.
He spots her and sits across from her.
"Anything?"
She shakes her head.
"I'm sure he's sleeping off a bender somewhere."
"Somewhere not in The City."
"You drove through the whole City? Is my car in one piece?"
"Yes and it's out of gas."
She tosses his keys and they bend through the air and into his hands. She gets up and rinses her bowl.
Diego spins the key chain around his finger. He is pulsating with anxiety and just waiting for her to ask. She wont give in.
She walks out of the kitchen.
"Aren't you going to ask what I did."
She wants to stomp and scream. He can be so self centered! But instead she says just says "Nope." as calmly as she can without looking at him.
"You can't tell?"
"I can feel your feelings, I can't read your mind. You know this."
Diego is about to speak and she puts up her hand. "Go talk to her about it."
She walks towards the stairs.
"Her?"
"Whoever it was you thought of and made you get all nervous when I said her."
"There's no one."
"Whatever you say, Romeo."
She needs to take a nap. She can't keep looking for Klaus like this. Though, maybe a lack of sleep state of mind will help her think like him and she can try to figure out where he went. Though, not if he was kidnap. In that case she'll need her mind sharp, especially since no one will help her.
She makes her way up the second floor landing and realizes she should have taken the back stairs because Allison and Luther seem to be having an intense conversation. She tries to take off swiftly but-
"Celeste! Great, you can help us find Five." She hears Luther proclaim.
Number One. Assigning assignments and totally rerouting whatever was going on with Allison.
"Not until I find Klaus." Celeste says.
"Klaus? He could be anywhere doing God knows what. We need to find Five and figure out who those people were-"
"-What if they took Klaus? If you help me find him we could find them as well."
"Celeste, he ran off-"
"-Did you see him do that?"
Luther has no answer.
"He does this. He disappears. You know this."
Damn it, she does. Luther has his practical reasoning and Celeste just has this feeling in the pit of her stomach. She looks to Allison who remains stoic. Her silence agreeing with Luther. Celeste sees their mom sitting behind them. Mother. Who Celeste has never been able to feel, but sometimes her facial expressions looked more honest than any of the siblings and certainly the Monocle's. This was the stillest she had ever seen her. Was she…was she off? Off off?
"If he is with them, then all the more reason to find Five so we can find them." Continues Luther.
Time for Celeste to reroute this conversation.
"Is…is your mom okay?"
Luther and Allison exchange glances.
"They, they did something to her. She's, she's gone."
Diego. He either doesn't know, or…or that's what he was talking about in the basement. Damn. Celeste knows her face is going to reveal something so she quickly says,
"Last I saw Five he was in a parked van off of Mallory. It's parked in front of a big office looking building in someone's driveway."
She walks past him.
"Great! I'll follow you there."
"No, I'm going to to Vanya's and then to find Klaus."
"What? Celeste-"
"I can drive you. I was going to head there anyway." says Allison as she rounds the corner putting on her coat.
"Oh come on. No one is going to help me?"
"Vanya needs to know about mom." Allison says.
This makes Celeste's heart full. One sibling still wants to include Vanya, and honestly it's the last one she thought would.
Allison shakes Celeste awake when they are outside Vanya's apartment.
"You really did stay out all night looking for Klaus."
Celeste nods and unbuckles her seatbelt.
"He'll turn up."
There it is. That sour, sinking feeling in her stomach. It slowly makes its way up and out.
"I just feel if he was going to, he would have already."
She pushes is back down as she gets out of the car. She feels Allison holding it but backing off to give Celeste her space. Celeste is thankful for it.
They get to Vanya's landing when Celeste stops. The look in her face must say it all because Allison looks to the door and it's ajar.
"How many?" Allison mouths to her.
Celeste feels out. What. Is. He. Doing. Here.
"Just one." Celeste mouths back. "It's the guy. It's Leonard."
They exchange a look. Leonard has definitely lost any points he never had from either of them.
The quietly enter the apartment. Celeste feels him in the back. Ew. Get out of her room! Celeste gets the sense the he's snooping. But it's more than that, he's almost getting a high from it.
It makes Celeste spine crawl.
"Let's scare him." Allison mouths.
Celeste nods and they press themselves against the wall. He comes out of the room toward them. Celeste know that Allison really meant "I'm going to scare him." and she is selfishly looking forward to watching what is about to happen.
BOOM. Allison springs silently forward and kicks him behind the knee. He falls to the ground and Allison turns him over.
Celeste has to hide the smile on her face as she feels his total shock. It's not funny or anything, it just serves him right.
"Wait!" Leonard cries as Allison fist nears his face.
"What are you doing here? Allison demands to know.
"Where's Vanya?" Celeste calls from behind him.
Leonard turns and sees Celeste. He feels he's out numbered now. Umm..like you could even dream of taking out Allison Hargreaves. Celeste desperately wants to say out loud.
"She's at a rehearsal." Leonard says as he gets up. "She left her keys at my place last night, I'm just returning them." He takes out, indeed her keys. And everything he said is true.
Celeste nods to Allison. Something still doesn't feel right.
"I'm sorry I scared you." He says with a fake sweet smile.
"So, what are you doing inside her apartment?" Allison asks.
Yes.
"It's kinda of embarrassing. I had to use the restroom." Fake laughs. Nope. That's a lie.
He looks away from Celeste to Allison and Celeste shakes her head.
"If you don't mind me asking, why are you here?" Leonard asks, trying to worm his way out.
"Excuse me?" Allison takes a step forward.
"No, it's just from what I heard yesterday you didn't want anything to do with Vanya so I was just wondering-"
" I don't see how that's any of your business." Allison cuts him off.
"Right. It's probably not." He answers.
"It's definitely not." Celeste says. Leonard turns to her.
"I should probably get going. I'll just take Vanya's keys to her at rehearsal-"
"-We'll take them thanks." Celeste holds out her hand and purposefully forces a smile across her face.
"Right." He says as he hands the keys to her. He sure does say that word a lot. "Whatever's easiest."
"Right." Celeste says bitingly back.
Leonard uncomfortably smiles at her and then Allison. He moves to the door like he might not make it out, which he might not.
"It was great seeing you both." He leaves and does not close the door behind him.
Allison looks to Celeste and Celeste waits until she feels him out of the building. Then she nods.
"Did you get anything?" Allison asks.
"Not much more than you did, probably." She says as she darts to Vanya's room.
Allison follows her.
"He was not being honest of why he was here, obviously."
"Anything different?"
Celeste looks around the room. "No. He's either really good or he was just creepily standing here. She checks the bathroom. The only thing she clocks is Vanya's medicine is not there, but V often takes it with her. So no, nothing out of sorts.
"I've already tried hinting that he's no good to her and got no where. Maybe you'll have more luck." Celeste says as she hands the keys to Allison.
"You don't want to come just in case?"
"No. Besides, it should just be you two when you tell her about your mom and I need to find Klaus." Celeste heads to the door, but she starts to feel faint. Allison catches her.
"Whoa what is it?"
"I need nap. I need to nap and take a shower and find my twin."
Luther was right, she thinks on the bus. Damn it. She should have just gone with him to talk to Five. Maybe they're still there. She gets off the bus and walks a few blocks up to the building. She stares at her feet when she feels quite a few people curious and excited. She looks up. There's a small crowd straining to see beyond the caution tape as smoke cloaks the sky. Celeste quickens her steps.
"What's happened?" She asks the nearest person.
"Looks and sounds like someone blew up the building." They say, a little too gleefully. Celeste nods and slowly backs away. She can't get through the tape, but maybe she can follow it down to where the van was parked. And ah ha! There it is. Still parked across the street in somebody's drive way. No Number Five or Luther felt. They must have something to do with- wait. What is that written on the windshield? Celeste takes a step closer. Through the debris on the windshield someone has written "Your brother says hi." so that it could be read forward from the inside. Celeste stomach drops, the do have Klaus. There's a match box tucked behind the wiper that says "Luna Motor Lodge."
That's the motel right outside of the City. Celeste doesn't think twice. She turns walks swiftly to the bus stop.
"I'm coming Klaus." She cries out more in her heart than her head.
