It felt like an eternity passed while he sat in the waiting room. The lights were too bright and the sounds too loud. He kept looking at the door hoping someone would give him news every time it opened. Finally he saw one of the doctors who wheeled her in walking towards him. "How's Hailey?"

"Your wife is doing better. She came in severely dehydrated and fighting an infection. The combination of those too is what cause the intense cramps she had. We have started her on antibiotics and on fluids."

"She's pregnant. Is the baby okay?"

"Dr. Manning is her obgyn. Your wife requested to have her check on the baby. You can go in to see her now. Follow me."

"Thank you." he walked behind the doctor to Hailey's room. He felt his chest tighten when he saw her. She was laying in the bed on her side with a hospital gown on and IV's coming out of her hand. Her eyes were closed but he could tell she wasn't sleeping because she was slowly caressing her stomach. How did not notice the swell of her stomach before? It was very prominent right now.

"Mrs. Halstead we've paged Dr. Manning, she'll be in shortly to see you."

She took his last name. He assumed she still went by Upton but maybe it was only at work.

"Thank you, doctor."

"I'll be in to check on you a little later. Try to rest." The doctor excused himself and closed the door behind him.

He slowly approached the bed until he was standing next to her. "Are you feeling better?"

"Yes." She said, barely a whisper.

"Are you still in pain?"

"More of a discomfort than pain. The medication is helping."

"Is the baby okay?" he asked nervously.

"I think so." She was being strong and staying positive, but it was hard. She felt a tear fall down her cheeks surprised she still had any left after the last few hours and even more surprised when Jay swiped it away with his hand. "I am praying it is." He took her hand into his and kissed it. The simple gesture made Hailey feel better.

"Hailey, I came as soon as I could. Are you okay?" Natalie stormed into the room. "Hi Jay." She had her tablet in her hands and was already reading her chart. "You were severely dehydrated. Are you still having morning sickness?"

"More like all day sickness and every time I eat something."

"Hailey you should have come see me before in the past three weeks you've lost more than 10 pounds. That's not healthy for you or the baby."

Jay felt like a jackass. How did he not notice she was sick all the time? He was so focused on his problems he failed to see how bad it was.

"I know Nat. I made an appointment for Friday. These last few weeks have been very hectic."

"It doesn't matter Hailey. You must take care of yourself. Remember the baby depends on you."

Jay felt his cheeks getting red. It was like being back at school and getting a lecture from the principal. He squeezed Hailey's hand showing his support.

"Lets check on this baby now."

He saw Natalie pulled what he assumed was an ultrasound machine by the looks of it. She lifted Hailey's gown and put some gel on her belly. It was round and bigger than it looked without anything covering it. There was a baby growing in there. He watched Natalie go over Hailey's belly a few times and found himself holding his breath. One look at Hailey showed him she was doing the same. Suddenly a sound filled the silence in the room. He immediately knew what it was, he'd heard it before. This was his child and he already loved him or her.

"Nice and strong heartbeat." Natalie smiled at them. "Baby is perfect."

"Thank God." Hailey breathed deeply. She had been so worried and hearing her baby's heartbeat calmed her heart.

"I am going to prescribe medicine for the nausea and a round of antibiotics for the infection. I'm ordering plenty of rest. Not going back to work for at least 3 days. You need to try and eat."

"I will do anything you say I promise. When can I go home?"

"I see you've caught the Halstead hate for hospitals." She joked looking at Jay. 'You need to finish this IV of fluids and I would like you to have one more because I'm not sure how much you'll drink a home."

"I'll make sure she drinks plenty of fluids at home." Jay interrupted.

"I am trusting you Jay." She looked at him very seriously. "In that case you should be out of here is about 30 minutes. I want to see you next week to check in no excuses."

"We'll be here."

"Good night you two."

They were alone again and Hailey was a little taken back at Jay's responses to Natalie. "Jay you don't have to come home with me."

"I want to."

"Okay." She was yawning, the toll of this horrendous night finally catching up to her.

"Try to sleep until it's time to go."

"I am so tired." The words weighted heavy between them. Both knowing the meaning was deeper than simple sleep.

"You rest. I am here and I am not going anywhere." He sat in the chair next to the bed. Never letting go of her hand and watched as she closed her eyes drifting into sleep.

And hour and a half later they were back in the house. They had swung by the pharmacy. Jay had picked up the prescriptions while Hailey napped in the car. He had let Voight know neither of them would make it into work today. He also called his brother who was mad Jay hadn't let him know what was going on before then.

"I am going to take a shower. I need to get this hospital smell off me." She disappeared into the bathroom.

Jay moved to the kitchen and started making breakfast. He found the ingredients he was looking for apparently his hands knew where everything was because he knew which drawer to look in. Everything was ready by the time Hailey came back out wearing a long t-shirt that looked very familiar. She looked surprised to see him in the kitchen. "I was never a culinary star and I don't believe I would have turned into one in the last six years, but I do know how to make eggs."

"Oh I know. Most of the time you burn them though."

"Not today, they came out perfect."

"I am not hungry."

"Hailey you gotta eat. You didn't eat anything yesterday. Remember what Natalie said. Make an effort."

She nodded, sat down and picked a little of the scrambled eggs. Every time she swallowed, she expected it to come back up but it didn't. maybe this medicine would really help her stop throwing up.

"See they are not that bad." Jay said with a cocky smile and for a moment she got lost in his eyes.

"They are good. But I can't eat anymore. I don't want to temp fate." He took her plate and started cleaning up the kitchen. Hailey sat on the sofa and turned on the tv. She was tired but didn't feel like going to bed alone and couldn't ask him to go with her.

"What are you watching?" He had finished in the kitchen and sat next to her.

"Some rerun of an old show. There's not a lot in tv this early in the morning."

"You don't want to sleep?"

"Not yet." They watched in silence for a few minutes. "Thank you for coming when I called. I am sorry I didn't tell you about the baby. I feared your reaction."

"its not your fault Hails. I am sorry, I shouldn't have screamed and got mad. It just took me by surprise and my reaction was to be a jerk."

Now that you've had some time to digest it can you tell me how you feel about it?"

"Scared, excited, happy. Its really a mix of emotions."

" I was afraid you wouldn't want it." She felt hot tears falling. "These darn hormones are driving me crazy. I am not usually a like this." She chuckled trying to make fun of the situation.

"I confess when you told me it was a turmoil of emotions. But then where the possibility of losing it was so big it hurt. Literally I felt a weight in my chest, from the moment I walked in and found you in the bathroom I could barely breathe. I was so scared of something happening to either of you and all of it be my fault."

She was close to him in a second, both hands on his face. "Hear me Jay Halstead, this was not your fault. You would never ever hurt me, no matter what the circumstances. You have the biggest heart of anyone I know."

Hearing those words broke him, the stress from the past 24 hours finally breaking Jay. He felt tears coming down and started blinking in an effort to stop them to no avail. He finally gave up and let the tears come hiding his face in the nook of her neck.

"Let it out Jay. I am right here." She ran her hands through his hair knowing that calms him. "We are going to be okay, all of us." She let him cry silent tears. Not saying anything just holding him until he was done.

"I am not usually like this, either right?"

"No, but you are not afraid to express your feeling either. We are very open with each other. Jay we became friends and confidants before anything else. I know I can tell you anything and I trust you with my life."

"I prayed for you and our baby?"

"What?"

"I remember going to church with my mom a lot and she would always have us pray. Then when she died my dad told us it was stupid, and we never went to church again. But when we are the hospital, and I didn't know what was happening I started praying. I barely remember how so I just asked God to protect my wife and my child." She gasped at his words. "Hails I don't remember our life but I have feelings so intense they scare me. I want to be with you all the time, I have a feral need to protect you, my heart starts beating faster when I am near you. I don't remember marrying you and yet when I thought of you yesterday, I thought of my wife. Does it make sense?"

She only nodded and leaned into him happily, Jay has feelings for her.

Neither spoke again. He simply held her in his arms, enjoying having her so close and thinking about everything they both said and that's how they fell asleep in each other's arms.
