Two of Spades
.
.
Oikawa was waiting for me as I walked towards science class. How I knew that, I didn't know. He was surrounded by his ever-present fangirls, who used the time before class started to fawn over him.
He looked up and noticed me. "Ah, back so soon?" There was something in his tone I couldn't quite decipher.
The girls glared at me for interrupting but I ignored them.
"Yeah."
I stalked inside the classroom and dumped his books onto his desk, immediately feeling the pressure lift off from my arms. I was still irritated from my conversation with Kotoe. Needless to say, I wasn't in the mood to talk.
I pulled out Oikawa's science textbook and notebook, setting them down with a bit more force than necessary. In the doorway, Oikawa said something that made the fangirls pout, disappointed, before they left.
"So, what happened?"
I started at his sudden voice. I plunked down into the chair next to his desk.
"Nothing," I grunted.
Oikawa sat down, flipping through the notebooks as if making sure that I'd brought everything. "It didn't seem like nothing."
"Why do you even care?"
He raised an eyebrow. "As my pet, I have the obligation to make sure that your life is running as smoothly as possible."
I gave him a flat stare as more people started streaming into the classroom. "That's the exact opposite of what you've all been doing."
Oikawa shrugged. "If you're not going to tell me, then I guess I'll have to ask Kotoe."
I opened my mouth before clamping it shut, slouching down in my seat. Knowing Kotoe, she would probably twist the truth until it was indistinguishable, until the roles were reversed and everything became a lie in her favor. But strangely, I found that I didn't really care anymore.
"Fine. Ask her," I sighed. "Swallow whatever lie she tells you."
Oikawa hummed, unfazed, his eyes severe yet also amused. "That's not a very nice thing to say about a noble."
"Does it look like I care?"
"You should."
"I don't."
The bell rang, signaling the beginning of the period. The teacher walked in and immediately dove into a lecture. I pulled out my own notebook I'd hidden under Oikawa's stack and proceeded to take notes. Pet or not, I wasn't going to let the money my parents had scraped together for my education at Seijoh go to waste. I missed the slightly inquisitive glance Oikawa gave me.
Splat!
A blob of milk had suddenly splattered onto my notebook, staining the words and spreading through the pages.
"Oops, my bad!"
I slowly looked up at a Class 3 commoner in front of me, the now empty milk carton in his hands.
"My hand just slipped, sorry!" he snickered, the apology fake and insincere in every possible way. "I didn't mean to ruin your notebook like that."
We had the attention of most of the class by now. Mr. Tajima stopped in his lecture to tell the disruptors off, but once he saw it was me, he ignored the commotion and proceeded with his lesson. I took a deep breath and let it out slowly.
"No problem," I said. "It was just an accident."
I reached down into my bag and pulled out a napkin, wiping up the soggy mess my notebook was by now. The Class 3 commoner's eyes narrowed. That obviously wasn't the reaction he was looking for.
"What- is that all? I just ruined your notebook… is that all you've got to say?"
I didn't look up. "I don't have anything to say to you. My words would just be wasted."
I swore I heard a small huff of a laugh beside me, amused and bewildered at the same time. I looked at Oikawa, but there was no trace of the quiet chuckle.
The Class 3 commoner glowered. "Why you-"
"Mr. Fugaya," the teacher finally interrupted irritably, "would you please quiet down? You're distracting me and the other students. I don't think you'd want another detention."
The so-called Fugaya jolted. "N-No, sir. Sorry."
And he scuttled away to his desk. I had to stifle a smile. Class 3 commoners might be all high and mighty over a pet, but they didn't stand a chance against the teachers. Especially Mr. Tajima. I had to thank him for cutting in.
"And," he continued, his severe gaze landing on me, "don't make a commotion in my class next time."
Actually, I take that back.
"I didn't even start it," I muttered under my breath.
Oikawa put down his pencil as Mr. Tajima continued. "I'm wondering… how you would do in keeping a bunch of volleyball players in check."
I blinked, tilting my head. "You want me, a pet, to order around some rowdy, volleyball-playing nobles?"
He only smirked at me, his eyes mischievous, but not in a scary, demonic way. They were more teasing, playful.
"...You're joking."
"Nope," he chirped, propping his head up on his desk. "How do you feel about becoming a manager for the Seijoh Boys' Volleyball Club?"
And that was how, after school, I found myself following Oikawa as he led the way to the gym.
"You're joking."
He frowned. "That's the fiftieth time you've said that. And for the fiftieth time, no, I'm not joking."
"There's no way they'd listen to me, so your idea of ordering them around is down the drain already," I said, baffled.
He waved his hand dismissively. "It'll be fine. Besides, this way, you can even help me out after school at practices, as well as my teammates. It'll be great!"
"Yeah, great," I grumbled sarcastically, wincing at the new-forming bruise on my arm. Some Class 3 girls had thought it would be a good idea to shove me into a sink in the bathroom.
I trailed behind Oikawa as he walked down the hallway, heading to the doors for the gym. I looked out the window towards the campus entrance on my right, the freedom so close yet so far away.
If I'd known the trouble I was going to get myself into, I would've run right towards the campus gate and escaped the school grounds before it was too late.
