Chapter 8 A Brawler's Resolve
(Location: Combat Arena Beacon Academy capital city of Vale Sonus continent Kingdom of Vale Remnant)
Team JNPR and CRDL stood on the front of the arena awaiting their teacher to resume with their hand to hand combat training class. It was a surprise Himeko hasn't arrived yet when she's the first to be here awaiting them. It was clear something was wrong or has happened. They thought that they should check in with the headmaster if he will know where could she be. Because after seeing how strict she is it was very unlikely she will be late. Some students like Jaune were starting to wonder and get worried. She couldn't be sicked because they took Himeko's class in the morning as usual. So, what was going on. Maybe the teachers had a meeting unable for the red head to come.
Yang has suddenly arrived with the rest of Team RWBY behind her. The blond has already equipped Ember Celica more than ready for her match. Everyone noticed the blond girl of the team didn't looked happy. Jaune was about to ask Ruby but the silver eyed petite just shook her head. Her face said she was worried. Blake and Weiss were quiet but they weren't happy. Just what was wrong with them. Himeko has arrived wearing her Battle Storm suit this took the students by surprised. The sight of her weapon got their attention, she has never used it during the training. This made them more confused at what was going on. Will the red head teacher go all out on them, not a pretty sight.
"Everyone head to your seats except, Miss Xiao Long!"
This caught them by surprise. Why should they go there. Does she want them to get seated. That has never happened before they will usually be here training.
"Professor Himeko…." started the Arc.
"The two of us have a match" resumed the red head woman.
And once more JNPR and CRDL were surprised. A match, an actual match. Judging from her face and Yang's, this was really happening. They weren't planning in disobeying her as they slowly left. Jaune wanted to know about to ask Ruby but the petite just left with her two teammates. Himeko and Yang were only staring at each other as the students left the arena. The brawler was focused, ready to fight with everything she has knowing this was no ordinary opponent. She has proven to be really strong and definitely not one to be underestimated. While the red head was calm not looking worried in the least. Once more the past was catching up to her to that day she fought a certain white haired Valkyrie.
They stood outside of the Academy in the courtyard where they won't cause too much destruction. Himeko was wearing Battle Storm and using a regular claymore model. She wasn't going to need the stronger models, not like she wanted to kill the poor girl. Kiana was wearing White Comet and she was using a pair of prototype dual pistols. The twin braid girl knew this wasn't a serious fight so she choose to go with regular models. Though she was considering on using stronger models for someone like the major. The white haired Valkyrie was actually trying to focus and have the advantage in hoping to beat her.
"What's going on?!"
People arrived one of them being alarmed at what was about to take place, the other wasn't fazed. The first were Mei and Bronya wearing their B rank battle suits, Crimson Impulse and Valkyrie Chariot. The last two were the Principal Theresa Apocalypse in her A rank battle suit Valkyrie Pledge and Fu Hua in her A rank suit Valkyrie Accipiter.
"Himeko! What are you doing!?" shouted the Principal in the nun battle suit.
"She challenged me to a fight and I accepted."
"You can't do that! Its against Academy regulations if there's an unofficial match without my consent" argued the short Valkyrie.
"Tell her that, she doesn't care."
"Kiana what are you doing?!" called Mei.
"They shouldn't fight just because they feel like it. This is careless behavior" said Fu Hua.
"Stay out of this! I want to do this" the twin braided Valkyrie readied her guns.
"You heard her. If she won't behave like a good girl and wants to act like a brat over being a Valkyrie then it's up to me to teach her a lesson by putting her in her place" the red head has drawn her claymore.
"Kiana stop!" said the girl with long purple hair.
"Subject Kiana's chances of victory are a negative one million" spoke Bronya in her usual monotone voice.
"I'm ready when you are" Himeko ignored the angry Theresa shouting in the background with Fu Hua trying to calm her down.
The red head kept staring at Yang with her yellow golden gauntlets ready for the fight. By now the seats were filled by the rest of the students. This is exactly like that day. Kiana challenging her thinking she could take her on as a way to go above her authority. Probably used her to measure her limit what a silly girl so stubborn and hotheaded. Thinking she had a chance. The girl before her now, had similarities to the white haired Valkyrie. But she already knew the brawler wasn't as strong as Kiana at least, she wasn't in the same level as a trained Valkyrie. Sadly this match wasn't going to last long. Himeko knew who she was dealing with and she won't even break a sweat.
The doors to the arena opened as Goodwitch arrived in a hurry. At first she thought Himeko was kidding, she should have known better.
"You're really going through with this?"
"She's not going to stop until she gets what she wants. Be the official for the match dear."
The blond teacher gave a sigh taking her scroll activating the combat class app settings for the coming match. The students saw the large holographic screen showing the profile pictures of the combatants as well as their aura gauge.
"We still haven't made agreement conditions for our match."
"Conditions…?" said the blond brawler.
"Don't you have any conditions if you win?"
"Well-If I win then you will stop looking down on me and apologize."
"Sounds fair. But if I win…."
The red head has taken something from the pocket of her shorts. The sight was enough to make Yang looked in fear. It was enough to make her realized what she was planning if she does win the match. The Valkyrie was holding a pair of scissors.
"I will cut your hair."
Lilac eyes widened in fear as Ruby was shocked at the teacher's condition. The silver eyed petite knew how much her sister loves her long hair, it's so precious to her. There was no way she will agree to the match now. Even the young reaper knew her chances of winning are very slim. The brawler should just forget about it. The blond stood frozen, the scissors and those words. If she loses, she will lose more than just her dignity and pride but her beautiful golden hair. Himeko shook her head, all of this fear just for hair. Guess she couldn't expect less.
"You can still back down. I'm not obligating you to fight me."
"No we're doing this!" even if there was some hesitation in her voice.
"Don't say I didn't warned you."
The Valkyrie has taken Giukikiri Nagamitsu and stabbed it on the ground. She gave a few stretchs before getting into a fighting stance.
"What are you doing, pick up your weapon?"
"I don't need it" she smiled cockily.
This only made Yang more upset. Last time they fought, she beat her with her weapon so easily. Fighting her with her fists is proof enough she will be holding back. And it was really making her blood boil. This teacher wasn't taking her seriously, not even worth a challenge.
"The following match will be treated as any other from this class. You all know the rules. Whoever aura's fall on the red will lose and Miss Murata try to go easy on Miss Xiao Long" said Goodwitch.
"I won't hurt her except her big ego."
This enraged Yang as her eyes turned red. Big ego, she's the one treating her like crap non-stop. This woman has been disrespecting her, belittle her since the incident at the Klub. She admitted she did wrong to Junior and his place of work but enough is enough. She wanted respect from the red head teacher and she will get it whether she likes it or not. Time to fight serious like she has never done before. The others on the seats were watching eagerly wanting to know what will happen. Even if they already know how this match will end.
"If both combatants are ready...BEGIN!"
(Music: "Lightning" from the Honkai Impact 3rd original soundtrack)
Yang focused firing the shot gun feature straight at the red head woman. As she expected, Himeko has evaded the fire with ease. This shocked the students it sounded impossible to dodge dust round fire as fast as it is. Unless your semblance is moving fast like Ruby's or something else. But it didn't seemed the teacher has used such. The Valkyrie wasn't trying it was just like the Klub. The blond might be trying her hardest but it wasn't enough. Caramel eyes widened as the brawler has gotten closer, firing at close range. No need to use ultimate evasion as she chose to take the full blast. It didn't hurt her but managed to lowered some of her aura. Though that combat class app has some flaws, the aura gauge wasn't accurate if she does have a lot of it.
The blond brawler used some quick punches and kicks that were blocked. Himeko countered with a strong kicks, followed by a right hook. Yang groaned seeing that those attacks took a bug chunk of her aura. She mentally growled, she was still strong without her weapon. The teacher wasn't taking this fight seriously at all. Lilac eyes widened as the red head come straight at her, too fast to react. Taking a barrage of punches as she hit the ground hard. Ruby, Weiss and Blake gasped in shock as the red cloak leader was trying to cheer on her older sister. The Valkyrie noticed how much the brawler's aura gauge went lowered. One more hit would do to put it in the red zone. But knowing Yang she's going to get up and attempt to land a hit.
(Music end)
"It's just like back then…."
Kiana did her best using her katas. The kicks were blocked and she got hit by counter attacks of the red head Valkyrie. Firing the dual pistols were blocked by the claymore. This match should have never take place because it was so clear which Valkyrie is the strongest. Himeko was barely trying against the white haired girl. Another attack blocked as she performed a kick and a straight hook right in her face. The young Valkyrie was sent to the ground as she dropped the pistols. The red head kept her large sword not even breaking a sweat.
"Kiana! Major Himeko please stop the match!" said the worried Mei.
"She's the one who issued the challenge."
"This is enough Himeko. You proved your point!" argued Theresa.
"I'm willing to end the match right now. Good luck convincing her though!" she pointed to the downed girl.
"This girl...She reminds me of Kiana…."
"Yang!" shouted Ruby seeing her sister on the ground.
"Why did she challenged Professor Himeko in the first place?!" asked Weiss.
"This match is over. Glynda dear, call it."
"Miss Xiao Long's aura isn't on the red yet so I can't call it yet. However, it will be up to her if she wants to concede the match."
The red head sighed knowing that wasn't going to happen. This girl is too stubborn, she wasn't going to give up the match. She rubbed her forehead this wasn't over and already wanted it to be done. The blond has made a big mistake challenging her and it was going to cost her. She could have gone to her and land the finishing blow but that wasn't her style. Yang was no enemy, no threat just an opponent for a mock battle. This wasn't a real fight to begin with. Everyone else watching were in awe seeing the display of strength from the red head teacher. Himeko stood there staring at the girl, her eyes softened for a moment.
"Give up. You know you can't win. Back down now."
"….."
"Give up Yang. You did your best but now, it's over. This match was pointless from the start."
The blond slowly got up as she stared down at the red head. Himeko's eyes widened as her gaze was exactly as Kiana when she refuses to give up. So much determination that couldn't die. If it was a flame it would never be extinguish.
"You don't seem to know me well…."
(Music: "I Burn" from the RWBY volume 1 original soundtrack by Jeff Williams)
Yang got up firing her gauntlets as the red head dodged. Her eyes turned red activating her semblance. She has one shot only and she couldn't waste it. The brawler charged up able to go faster, firing as the Valkyrie evaded again. After getting hit so many times her strength should be more than enough to beat the teacher. Himeko was right ahead, launching everything she's in this one punch. If it connects she wins. She heard Ruby cheering her on. This match was over, decided when she activated her semblance. Giving a battle cry the brawler unleashed her might at the woman. But it didn't got the results she wanted.
(Music end)
It seemed time has completely stopped for Yang as the audience were shocked. It was the same with Goodwitch. It was all silent as not a single sound was heard. Red eyes widened in pure shock at what she was seeing. Himeko has caught her fist with one hand and what's worse she couldn't fire because her gauntlets ran out of ammo. No time to reload because she was just that shocked. The red head has proven she was stronger than she looks as the effect of her semblance vanished. Her eyes returning to her original lilac. The Valkyrie didn't said a word as she hit the blond on her stomach with her knee. The final hit was done as the brawler's aura hit the red officially ending the match.
"NEKO CHARM!"
Kiana exploded, back on her feet as she has activated her ultimate attack for her White Comet battle suit. This caught everyone by surprise not expecting her to use such attack. The white haired girl charged at Himeko who kept her guard up though, she was also shocked of this. The young Valkyrie released her giant cat arms and legs as the red head dodged them. Each hit that landed on the ground was causing destruction, turning it to craters. Using her ultimate was out of the question. If she was blinded by her own anger she wasn't focusing which it should be easier to land a precise attack.
"Kiana! Stop!" shouted Theresa.
"This match is over! Enough already!" followed Fu Hua.
"Kiana stop right now, please!" said Mei.
"Subject Kiana has decreased her chances of victory to a negative ten million" said Bronya.
Himeko ignored them. If she wasn't listening to them, she wasn't going to listen to her either. Something caught the red head's reaction as the enraged assault continues. Caramel eyes widened as Kiana's eyes have changed color. No longer they were baby blue but rather yellow. Something about those eyes that actually scared her. It's like she wasn't there and instead it was someone else. Someone more dangerous, someone more powerful and someone very evil. The red head Valkyrie took her chance evading attacks as she used a knee strike as it made contact with the white haired girl's stomach. Enough to send her to the ground she was downed, but not out. Her eyes returned to normal as the woman was relief. She knew what was behind those yellow eyes.
"Yang Xiao Long's aura is in the red. The winner of the match is Miss Murata!" declared Goodwitch.
"I lost…." Yang was still in shock.
Everyone were still in awe at the fight. The brawler did put up a fight but she never stood a chance. Himeko has proven to be stronger, faster and just overpower for the blond. Ruby was tearing watching her sister lose knowing how much it will hurt her pride. She was always the winner of Signal, the strongest student and the one everyone wanted to be like. How things have changed. The red head Valkyrie has taken the scissors knowing what was going to happen next.
"Are you ready to fulfill my condition on the match?"
Lilac eyes widened in horror as they fell on the scissors in her hand. No, this couldn't be happening her beautiful long hair. Himeko grabbed her right wrist as a shriek escaped the brawler's lips. Ruby acted on pure instinct as she jumped from the stands of the seats. Blake and Weiss were surprised but they chose to follow their leader. The red head teacher stopped them in her tracks with her serious gaze. It was enough to freeze them in fear.
"I tried to talk to her out of this and she didn't listened. She challenged me and she lost, she chose this. If you have any dignity you will accept the conditions we agreed on" her gaze fell on the blond brawler.
Yang only shook her head not accepting it. It only upset Himeko more instead of admitting she was wrong about all of this. Now she was going to pay for it, with her hair.
"Please...Don't…." her tone sounded so breaking like a frightened child, tears emerged.
Instead the Valkyrie just had a bout enough of this. She should have known better than to find a way to feed her ego proving she's the strongest in the school.
"Live with your choice."
And with no mercy she grabbed some of the locks of her hair and started cutting them. Her cries was heard throughout the whole arena as the red head teacher resume to cut the long blond locks. Ruby, Blake and Weiss stood in so much shock along with Goodwitch. It sounded like Yang was being tortured. Jaune, Pyrrha, Ren and Nora were in the same boat. CRDL was more afraid than shocked, the four boys wanted to bury themselves in a hole. This has opened their eyes to NEVER make Himeko angry. The brawler kept on crying until the cutting was done. The Valkyrie got up watching as so many blond locks were falling to the ground. The blond was still on the floor, her head covered as she was sobbing.
Ruby went to the downed girl at a loss for words. This was the first time she was seeing her older sister cry like this. She was always the strong and happy one who will looks things on a bright side. Not anymore. It was more shocking to see her with short hair thinking that the blond will remain with long hair. And now she was watching her looking so helpless, so weak. Turning to Himeko who had a cold expression like she could care less. How can she be so cold to treat her sister this way. Will she do the same to everyone.
The Valkyrie stopped staring at the sobbing Yang as she gazed at the rest of Team RWBY followed, by gazing at the students by the stands.
"This is a school for Huntsmen and Huntresses not a daycare center, or a fast food joint, or a dance club! If you choose to come here, it's because you want to protect Remnant from all kinds of threats! It's because you want to become a protector for mankind! Honestly it's a little late to be asking but it's time you open your eyes and ask yourselves what do you want? You're here now then it's clear what you want to do with your life and the kind of future you want to lead. The life of someone to fight for the sake of others, against the Grimm, against evil. To risk your life to protect others, the innocent, the weak, human, faunus, and even those that have committed crimes. You're not here to feed your pride, your ego or prove a point that you're better than others!" her gaze went back to the sobbing Yang.
"It's up to us to prepare you to become the best Huntsman you can be. The headmaster might have a soft spot believing in you but not me. You'll have to earn it if you want to prove to me that I can believe in you! So I don't care how popular you are" her eyes were on Pyrrha for a second.
The red head stood worried but chose to stay calm. Of course she didn't care how good she is. She wants to graduate from Beacon as a full fledge Huntress.
"Or if you're from a wealthy family" the Valkyrie gazed at Weiss.
The heiress chose to be calm while she was still shocked gazing at the broken down Yang.
"Or if you decided to bully other students because it makes you feel good to be stepping on them" her eyes went straight to Team CRDL.
The four males were ready to crap their pants. The leader Cardin wasn't fond of faunus but after the red head teacher said that. Maybe, he should turn a new leaf and try to be nicer to them. That cold gaze of hers is cold enough to freeze anyone solid.
"Or if you want to show off because you're strong. If you think that, you're definitely in the wrong place" her eyes went back to the sobbing blond.
"Remember this. You're here to study, train and dedicate yourself to be the very best you can be. As Huntsmen and Huntresses you must...You have to be ready for anything. Because if you're not ready to put your life on the line for the sake of others. You don't deserve to be a Huntsman, you have chosen the wrong occupation. Not just a job but a duty and a responsibility. If you can't meet up to the standards of one then, you don't belong here."
Taking one last glance at Yang, Himeko finally walked out of the arena. Once she was done, the whole place fell into a dead silence. Even Goodwitch couldn't speak from her shock.
Himeko kept staring at the downed Kiana. Mei ran to the white haired girl checking if she was all right. Indeed she was okay, it would take more than that to kill a Valkyrie. Even a B rank like the Kaslana. The red head turned to Theresa and Fu Hua they were obviously still upset with her for this fight happening. But it seems they also noticed when the girl's eyes changed color. They knew very well what was that about. It's a good thing she was able to bring her back to normal. Who knows how how bad it would have gotten if that power got released.
The white haired Valkyrie slowly got up as Mei was helping her. Her blue eyes narrowed at the red head. Obviously she wasn't happy with the defeat. The woman just wanted to hurt her pride more than just physically.
"You can't become an S rank Valkyrie if you're reckless. It will be for nothing if you get killed. You will never become one if you don't follow orders. Become stronger than Durandal do you know how much of a joke that sounds?"
Kiana glared as Mei did her best to calm her down. Himeko didn't said another word as she walked out.
"I hate you Himeko! I HATE YOU!"
The red head Valkyrie walked the hallway as she stood in thought. After that, they won't want to take any classes. They would be too shocked or fearful and she didn't blamed them. Should have said there won't be no class today. Hopefully Goodwitch will tell them. Right now she needed to get to her office and wait before she gets called by the headmaster over he behavior with Yang. Not looking forward to it and she knew the blond teacher will be the one to contact Ozpin. A cold one would do or her flask. Her thoughts went back to the brawler.
"She's so similar to Kiana. Or maybe I'm getting softer than I thought."
Just as Himeko expected she was called to the headmaster's office by Goodwitch. The blond teacher was clearly not happy with her actions towards Yang. The red head stood calm staring at Ozpin who was up from his desk holding his cane and his coffee mug on the other hand. He seemed to be in his usual demeanor while the blond woman stood next to the Valkyrie trying to remain calm. The red head didn't bothered to throw a glance at her thinking she was overreacting. The man took a sip from his mug as he stared back at the red head woman.
"Miss Murata do you know why you're here?"
"I do."
"And do you have anything to say for yourself?"
"You told me to prepare them to face Salem and that's what I intent to do."
Goodwitch was surprised at this.
"I have to make sure they don't have any second thoughts. I'm trying to test their resolve. If they can handle it, I'll gladly continue to be there for them. If they don't they're free to leave the school I won't be teaching them anything if they lack the will. I want future Huntsmen and Huntresses and the best way to make them learn is to make each day of their lives here struggle as if they were fighting an impossible battle. Going easy on them is out of the question, they must learn the hard way. Regardless of status or race, I treat them all equally."
The headmaster gave a nod as he took another sip.
"They're just kids!" argued Goodwitch.
"Not for long. They will grow a lot faster with me around."
"Your actions earlier basically have them dead scared!"
Ozpin took another sip from his coffee gazing at one teacher to the other as they spoke.
"It was just a match."
"You humiliated a student in front of her classmates!"
"It's just hair, it will grow back."
"We both know this is more than just hair. You didn't just won the match that lead in cutting her hair. You tarnished her dignity to the ground, step on her self esteem, you made her cried, you...Scarred her for who knows how long, maybe forever. Miss Xiao Long won't ever look at you the same way or the rest for the matter."
"Inflicting fear isn't something to be proud of I don't like it any more than you. But it's a necessary evil. They must learn discipline one way or the other. Besides I warned them on the first day they will fear me and hate me. They should have seen this coming."
"That is not the point! What you did back there was WRONG! It goes against the morals we teachers of this school stand for! Or any other school in the four kingdoms. I don't have to tell you. You crossed the line Miss Himeko."
"This is no ordinary school dear. It's a Huntsman school a military school, call it any other name it doesn't change the fact that is anything but ordinary."
"It's not the same!"
"Oh? Back in my world there are military schools known as boot camp where young folks will go to receive a lot of education and intense training. For the purpose to graduate and become official soldiers of their country. They will get sent to other countries that are engulf in war for the purpose of protecting their own country, their people. To end the war so the world can be a better place. Soldiers fight for their home, for their land and some fight because they want peace in the world. So tell me Glynda, how is that any different from being a Huntsman?"
The blond teacher stood silent as her gaze was still fixed on the red head. Ozpin was still quiet listening, letting them resume their argument.
"Being a Valkyrie isn't any different either. We received training and education and we also go through some painful moments with the process for becoming one. We get deployed to locations infected by the Honkai, we eliminate the threat for the world, for mankind's sake. We're the protectors to ensure those people can live to see another day. We fight for good, for humanity and we're risking our lives every single day. We're all alike. If I'm harsh and cold it's because I must. I don't know how powerful Salem is even with everything Ozpin told me about her. That's why I have to ensure those students succeed during their time here. I don't like involving them in this war but they already got involved the moment they came to this school."
"Feel free to judge me and criticize my way of teaching. I've met people like Yang Xiao Long. She wouldn't stop asking for a rematch until she gets it, she just wants to prove a point. I'm not giving up on her or them. If they gave up on themselves there's nothing I can do. Until then I will give it my best that the future defenders of Remnant become the strongest when they graduate Beacon."
Goodwitch stood in thought guess she has been harsh on the red head. But she was still questioning her method to dealing with the first years. Ozpin has taken another sip from his coffee before settling the mug to his desk facing both women.
"I've heard enough from both of you. I agree with Glynda to an extent and I also agree with Miss Murata to another extent. Miss Murata is right of this school not being an ordinary one. Beacon just like others are schools with the purpose to train future Huntsmen and Huntresses. Students come here to become warriors and those that will protect humanity against the Grimm or more precise, Salem. They will no longer be children by the time they graduate so I see no harm if they grow up a little faster than usual. I admit this war, my war will eventually be fought by everyone. Sooner or later they will have to get involved and they will have to make a choice. I don't doubt that day will come" he turned to the red head Valkyrie.
"Glynda is right regarding your treatment towards Miss Xiao Long during that match. It was rather cold how you cut her hair in front of everyone. It would have been acceptable if you did it somewhere else with less of an audience. Perhaps you should learn to control your...Mannerism. I know you were trained as a soldier Miss Murata but that is no excuse for such treatment. Whether Miss Xiao Long's behavior is unacceptable or not. Please do be careful the next time. I do hope your actions towards her don't have severe consequences."
"Guess there's only one way to find out. I'll be on my way."
Himeko turned as she took the elevator leaving the office. She wasn't upset and she didn't regretted her choices and actions. Yang needed a wake up call no matter if it was a cold one as Ozpin said. Goodwitch just shook her head at the woman.
"I had a feeling this would happen. I knew working with her would be, difficult. I know I can be strict and harsh because I follow the school rules and I want everyone to obey them too, but I would never humiliate a student no matter if his or her behavior is bad. There's detention for that not...What she did."
"I believe Miss Murata's experience in this world will change her and help her. Spending time with the students might have a positive impact in her life. Try to give her a break, she did died and her life was quite tragic. She was willing to give her life to save one of her students such sacrifice is to be taken into high account" he took another sip.
Himeko was almost done with another session of her first class. It's been four days since the match and things didn't seemed to have gotten back to normal. Not in the least as the Valkyrie has noticed the empty seat next to Ruby with Weiss and Blake seated on opposite side. Yang was absent today too as the red head mentally sighed she didn't like this. She was getting worried maybe she did went overboard. But getting depressed because she cut her hair sounded ridiculous. Not to mention Ozpin has already spoken to her regarding the brawler's predicament and it wasn't good. The red head teacher ended the class as the three teams were ready to go for the next course.
"Team RWB stay. I would like to have a word" of course she would say the name without the Y to complete the team's name.
The three girls wearing their school uniforms didn't reacted as they went back to their seats. Himeko saw their expressions. Ruby was the most noticeable not happy, nor angry. She was sad, probably depressed and the Valkyrie didn't blamed her. Weiss was trying to hide her concern knowing the team she's weren't in the best of terms. Blake wasn't her usual also knowing the team has been affected by the absence of their teammate. Needless to say these past few days haven't been good for them. Yang better get her act together or, the red head didn't want to think further.
"Is your fourth teammate planning to show up for class?"
"She's not planning to come, not after what happened" Weiss replied not sounding happy.
"She's been in bed and barely leaves the dorm. At least until she decides to take a shower" followed Blake.
"She hasn't eaten and slept either. We tried talking to her but she won't say a word and if we try to move her she won't budge" resumed the Schnee heiress.
Himeko shook her head while rubbing her forehead so it was worse than she thought.
"Apologize."
They turned to Ruby who finally spoke looking like she was about to break down.
"I want you to apologize to her. Just apologize now!" she suddenly snapped shocking her teammates but Himeko remain unfazed.
"She hasn't been the same ever since that match. She stopped talking to me after she...She was no longer herself. I don't even know who am I staring at whenever I see her. All I know, that's not Yang. That is NOT my big sister! You did this to her Professor Himeko so apologize!" tears emerged on the red cloak leader.
"You think if I say sorry to her she will go back to normal? You're sadly mistaken Ruby dear. In fact, I have nothing to apologize. Your sister did this to herself. She should have known better than to challenge me because she was still upset over a loss. Keep in mind that loss was over a fight she started. If you do remember the events that took place at the Klub."
The silver eyed lowered her gaze as Weiss put her hand on her should trying to comfort her partner. Honestly it was strange seeing her so sad, so downed when she's usually the complete opposite.
"Asides asking you about Yang's condition. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I must tell you. The headmaster has issued an ultimatum for your absent teammate. If Yang Xiao Long doesn't come to class in the coming two days, she will be expelled from Beacon."
The three girls gasped.
"But that can't be I-I mean you can't expelled her. The school rules say that there has to be a four man team to continue being in the school" replied the worried heiress.
"Does that mean we'll get expelled too?" Blake was also worried.
"Ozpin will decided what will become of Team RWBY. It is entirely up to him if he will find a replacement. Right now, it is not looking good for Yang. You should let her know immediately before she losses her chance from attending this school.
"You're not going to apologize?" said the silver eyed petite.
"I won't."
"But she-"
"Why do you think she's acting this way, and it's not because she lost the match?"
"Because you cut her hair" said the raven haired girl.
"Exactly. Yang is acting like a little kid that got her favorite toy broken. Her hair means everything and she would even get angry if someone touches it attempt to ruin it. That is not the behavior of a someone that wants to become a Huntress. Her hair will grow back she's sulking for nothing."
"It could be how you defeated her."
The Valkyrie and the rest turned to the amber eyed girl.
"It's the hair but somehow, it has to be with the fact how you acted after winning the match. In a way, you abused her, made her feel weak and helpless. You're superior and you treated her like she was inferior. Being beneath her abusing your power it's not right."
Himeko stood in thought letting Blake's words consume her. True the blond brawler was screaming and crying as she mercilessly cut her hair.
"My actions may have been unfair but I don't regret them. Yang needed to wake up and realize that being a Huntress isn't about luxury, worrying over her hair or her looks. Not when you have more important things to think about. Like your own life and the life of others. Hair will grow back, there's no need for her to sulk for four days because she got it cut. Ruby the only way your sister will go back to normal it's up to her. If she's committed to be a Huntress then she will suck it up and move on. No apologies just her."
"In other words it's up to her to get out of her sulky mood" said Weiss.
"If she still hasn't after four days then, there's nothing that can be done. She was never meant to be a Huntress. I'm sorry you have to hear it. I wish there was something I can do for her but I can't help her if she doesn't want to help herself first."
Ruby's silver eyes narrowed as she frowned. That wasn't true she knew Yang has what it takes. Her older sister is very strong and she's not going to let losing her hair keep her down. The brawler made it to Beacon so there's no way she's going to get expelled. She was a part of Team RWBY.
"You're wrong. I know Yang better than anyone and she's not a quitter she will never give up. She will get through this. For as long as I have known her she has always cherish her hair so much. It was...Her pride I guess when you cut it your tarnished it. I believe in her and so should you."
A smile spread the Valkyrie's feature this girl was truly something. When she thought about it there was some of Kiana in Ruby with a little of Mei in the mix. Yang however, she was still all Kiana. Turning to her teammate's, Weiss sighed while Blake had a small smile. The red head kept her smile.
"I do believe she will get better I don't want her getting expelled. I have a feeling when she's feeling like herself, she will come to me. So don't worry Ruby dear. If she's as tough as you say she is, then there's nothing to worry about."
Yang stood on the top bunk of their makeshift bunk bed. It was her sister's idea to create one with rope and some books from Blake's collection. She was still wearing her pajamas with her new short hair that will barely reach her neck. She hasn't even touch it to think it's been four days since then. The brawler was finally seeing reason in her actions. What the hell was she thinking challenging a teacher. Someone that she has seen first hand that was stronger and experienced. In fact, why she even accepted her conditions in the first place. Guess her pride got in the way not wanting to admit she lost to Himeko.
The door to the dorm opened as Ruby, Weiss and Blake arrived wearing their regular outfits. The brawler buried her head in her pillow she hasn't seen her sister and teammate's face since the match. Or has said a word to them since then. Why was she still acting like this it was starting to look pathetic. Sure she's devastated her hair got cut and it hurt more than her loss. The blond was really a mess knowing her behavior was worrying her baby sis and two teammates. Now she was just ashamed to look at their faces knowing she was only worrying them more. No tears would come out cause she was done crying.
"Hey sis. We got you today's class work, you really should catch up."
The blond didn't replied as she remained in her bed. It was getting ridiculous to be this way just because she lost her long and beautiful pride of her hair. Ruby sighed decided to tell her the news received by Himeko.
"Professor Ozpin says if you don't show up for class in two days, he will expel you. He means it. You should…."
The silver eyed leader finally had it as Weiss and Blake noticed the sudden change in the girl's features.
"I'm done with this. I don't care if you lost your hair that is no reason to mope for four days. I know you're sad, angry but it's time to move on. You can't let it end like this. You trained so hard, you studied so hard to get here. Remember how you kept telling me you wanted to become a Huntress and travel all of Remnant? Well if you don't get with the program now you'll lose your chances to be a Huntress. Did you hear me? You'll be kick out from the school! Don't let it happen, you're so strong Yang I know you'll get through this. I…." she sniffed.
"You're the strongest person I know. This is nothing you can overcome it. That's why you have to get up and fight because if you don't, there will no longer be a Team RWBY. If you're out of this team it's over, we're done. I don't see anyone else and I mean ANYONE who can replace you. You're irreplaceable big sis so please show them. Show everyone Yang Xiao Long never gives up!"
"….….…"
Weiss shook her head as she went to take a shower. Blake gave a soft as she picked up a book before hitting the ones from class. Ruby stood in the same spot in thought. If none of that worked then, there was only one thing she could do. It was a long shot but she needed to try it. Because if it doesn't work, nothing will snap her older sister back to reality.
"Don't prove Professor Himeko right."
Lilac eyes widened.
"The longer you stay sulking there, the more you're proving that everything she said about you is true. Do you want that or do you want to prove her wrong? You can't let her win. I believe in you, I will always believe in you."
No answer from the brawler as the red cloak girl gave a sigh. Not feeling like leaving the team leader decided to do some studying. Yang slowly raised her head from the top bunk letting her sister's words sink in. She was so pitiful acting like a child. The brawler was now staring at the ceiling her expression has changed to one of determination. Her baby sister coming to talk to some sense into her. After ignoring her and her teammates for days. She was starting to wake up and smell the coffee. There was only one thing to do to solve this.
After finishing class work Himeko went outside to the courtyard to catch a break. And what better way to enjoy her time off than with some alcohol. The red head happily drank from her flask. The refill isn't cheap but it's worth it. Enjoying the drink wasn't the same when she was thinking of other things. Usually the red head would think of nothing relaxing and drinking. Okay, maybe she will think of Qrow every now and then. But it wasn't the same when it was about her students in the first years. Blake's words were running all over her head but she couldn't accept it. Would Yang risk her future in Beacon just because she lost her hair, it was ridiculous impossible to swallow.
A Huntress shouldn't have that kind of thinking of putting her physique first over the duties of one. She really wanted to believe Ruby and Taiyang, she really wants to give the blond the benefit of the doubt. That girl needed a serious talk and if she doesn't take responsibility she will be expel and goodbye to her career as a future Huntress. The red head was hoping the red cloak leader will be able to get through to her older sister. The Valkyrie took another sip before closing it. It was still the week and there was enough work to get done. When she wasn't thinking about Yang's predicament she was thinking of her uncle. When will he come back. She sensed she was no longer alone in the courtyard.
"Finally decided to leave the dorm."
Himeko turned to see Yang at the end. The brawler has changed to her regular attire, the red head a long look at the blond. She was obviously upset as her eyes were red giving the message. Not like the Valkyrie was expecting she will be in a different mood. At least she managed to get herself out of her bed and leave the team's dorm. If she came to her it could only mean she either wants to fight her again or talk. The teacher was hoping it wasn't the first choice seriously, another fight will put her in trouble with Ozpin. And Goodwitch wasn't going to leave her alone about it. The red head mentally sighed the blond teacher has proven she's worse than Principal Theresa. She got up from the bench facing the brawler.
"Please tell me you're not here to challenge me again."
It was pretty true that Yang was angry glaring at the red head teacher. The memory was still fresh and alive in her head at how she was beaten. And then how she cut her beautiful long golden hair so cruelty. Followed by her harsh words during her speech. Yet, those words hold truth and logic. Himeko said them being intimidating but she was right. Four days was enough to make her think what she did wrong and her mistakes. She was still upset with the red head for losing at the Klub which it was the main reason she challenged her. And she lost, knowing she was way over head facing the teacher.
"I'm sure Ruby tell you about Ozpin's ultimatum. If you don't show up for class in the next two days you're out of Beacon. I hope you don't put the blame on me for it. I had nothing to do with his decision. You can't get away with being absent in school for too many days."
The blond stood silent as her eyes remained red. The Valkyrie was expecting an outburst of anger throwing another temper tantrum like a little girl that won't admit she lost. She was easy to read because Yang was the same as Kiana in personality wise.
"It's obvious you're still angry at me, I don't blame you."
"I am so angry at you, I am still angry at you" her tone was soft but there was a lot of anger hidden within it.
"Why are you here? I can assume you want another rematch sorry dear but I can't. Goodwitch will be lecturing me along with the headmaster I won't hear the end of it" the red head mentally sighed she didn't wanted that to be putting up with the two.
"I'm not here to fight you. Just because I'm still angry at you doesn't mean I will be stupid enough to fight you again. I learned my lesson what I just...I don't understand. Did you did it to for your own enjoyment? Humiliating me like that in front of everyone and my own sister? Does it feel good to make me feel miserable?"
"I was just fulfilling the conditions of the match. I won, you lose your hair. Get to the point what do you want?"
"Do you hate me?"
"I don't. Why do you think that? My first impression of you wasn't a good one and I think you're more of a trouble maker than someone aspiring to be a Huntress. But I don't hate you. I want you to learn and realize your mistakes and make your choice because time is running out. You're very close of being expel from this school. Do you want that?"
"No. I want to be a Huntress, I really do! I…."
"Travel around the world and seek adventure is not a good enough reason dear."
"But my mom-"
"Let's leave your mother out of this. I don't want to dig too deep into your personal life. I want to know if you really want to become a Huntress for the sake of helping people. Ruby has already proven she wants to whether her reason is corny the least. I still don't know Weiss and Blake's reasons or the other students but I'm sure it doesn't involve destroying a dance club that would get them in trouble with the law."
By now Yang's eyes have returned to normal, calming down a little. Her anger wasn't that strong anymore. Guess talking things out was really helping.
"I want to be a Huntress for the reason I said but...Maybe there's more. These four days gave me a lot to think about. It could be that my parents were Huntsman and they were all on a team. I know that's not Ruby's motives I guess...I'm still trying to find what drove me to choose to be a Huntress. Sorry if I don't have the answer you want to hear."
"You might be a troublemaker but I doubt you want to be a delinquent. You sound honest enough I hope you can find the answer. That is, if you do want to stay at Beacon."
"Of course I want to stay!"
Himeko smiled at the blond girl. Guess she was wrong about her, just as wrong as she was about Kiana. Guess she can give her a chance to prove herself and let her be.
"I'm not going to apologize for what I did if that's what you're wondering. Listen up Yang you better get serious now. I want to see you studying like you have never studied before if you want to change my mind about you. You really want to be a true Huntress then, prove it! Show me your resolve through your actions as a student of Beacon."
"I will. I'm still angry at you though" even so the brawler gave a soft smile.
"I know you will be for a while sugarplum" the Valkyrie smiled not realizing she called her the same nickname she started calling Kiana.
"Maybe she's not that bad after all. Sure she's a pain in the butt and she's so mean but, somehow. I feel like I can connect with her. It's like I can trust her with everything."
"As for your hair, there's nothing that can be done but wait for it to grow again" her caramel eyes softened.
Himeko has suddenly removed her hair pin releasing her long red hair. The brawler was in awe at how pretty she looks with her hair downed. That's exactly how she wanted to look with her hair. And even when all the boys and girls told her she was gorgeous with it, the teacher was prettier with the look. It shocked her what followed next as the red head has taken the same pair of scissors she used to cut her hair. And just like that the woman have grabbed her hair and just straight cut it. Lilac eyes widened in horror, why did she do that, what was she thinking. She was grabbing the long lock of red hair as she stand with a proud smile.
"There. This will make us even. It's all I can do to make you feel some payback satisfaction."
"Why...Why would you…." she was still shocked.
"It's just hair sugarplum. But I admit I hurt your feelings with my actions and I might have went overboard. Glynda brought it up and so did your partner Blake. I have a tendency to be too mean and a real bitch sometimes. I'm not hoping you will forgive me it's just the way I am."
"But I have to keep acting like a strict bitch because their lives are at stake. I have to prepare them to face Salem and the incoming war. This might even be in the same level as the war with the Honkai. I refuse to lose any students like I did with Kiana, I just can't. And Yang…." she kept staring at the blond brawler.
As the Valkyrie stared at her, the image of Yang was replaced with the white haired girl in twin braids. Giving that big smile that she was proud of being a Valkyrie.
Himeko enjoyed drinking the canned beer near the St. Freya Academy building. No alcohol consuming inside was one of the rules and the red head Valkyrie didn't had a problem with it. As long as she gets her chance to chunk down some booze, she can always go outside to have one. After the match with Kiana Theresa gave her a long lecture while she gave her reasons why arguing with the white haired girl. Without bringing the fact of her eyes changing color. She keeps bragging she will become an S rank Valkyrie while being reckless and disobeying orders during missions.
"You're here?"
The red head turned to see Kiana standing not that far. The white haired Valkyrie was still looking upset for what happened hours ago. She looked like she was ready to charge her going for another fight. Nope, the Principal already warned not to caused another one. Himeko was warned and she will obey so this time, the girl will have to suck it in. Seriously she's a Valkyrie she should behave like one not a little girl throwing a temper tantrum.
"I hope you don't cause me any more trouble. What happened earlier is enough."
And she pouted at her comment as expected. To think she was the daughter of the powerful Valkyrie Cecilia Shariac and predecessor of Durandal. She kept that expression while trying to turn her head away. Just what was going inside that head of hers.
"Well, I'm waiting. If there's something you want fairy, it better not be wanting an apology-"
"I'm sorry!" she suddenly sputtered shocking the red head.
"I was talking to Mei sempai and she pointed out some valid points that are true. Bronya too and...Stupid Bronya, she's the idiotka-I mean after talking to them...I guess I did wrong."
Himeko was baffled. She came here to apologize after talking to her classmates. This was definitely an improvement from her behavior earlier.
"I haven't been obeying your orders and doing a lot of crazy stupid things…."
And she laughed shocking the white haired Valkyrie.
"What's so funny?!" she glared as her face turned red.
"Admitting your errors is an improvement I approve sugarplum. What matters to me the most isn't if you obey my orders or not."
This confused Kiana, what was she talking about. She got so upset with her when she disobeyed direct orders.
"It's that nothing happens and you come back safe and sound. I don't want anything bad happening to you. When we go out there you as well as Mei, Bronya and everyone else are MY responsibility. I don't want to have any of your deaths on my shoulders sugarplum. So when I give you an order, you obey without any questions asked. Following the rules and behaving professionally is also part of being a Valkyrie. You need those qualifications when you become an S rank."
The girl stood in thought as the anger left her system. So she might act so harsh and really strict being the "by the book" person but deep down, she's a softy. A smile spread her features understanding her a bit more. Looks like Mei was right about Himeko after all. Hard on the outside, soft on the inside. Maybe this can be the beginning of a fresh start with the red head teacher.
"How about we forget what happened and move on?"
"I like that!" she smiled happily.
"Good. Now be a good student and bring me another beer."
The twin braid girl sweat dropped.
"We can have another sparring match if you want."
Immediately the red head has pulled her on the white haired girl's shoulder smiling. Just like that they have buried the hatchet.
Himeko gave the long cut piece of her red hair to Yang. The blond brawler was shocked as she didn't know why she was giving this to her.
"Keep it as a trophy."
"Trophy?"
"Or turn it into a nice wig."
"YANG!"
The brawler turned to see Ruby, Weiss and Blake running to her. Their expressions said that they were worried with a mix of relief. Then they gasped seeing the look on the teacher's hair. Their attention went back to their blond teammate.
"Oh my gosh Yang! We were so worried when we returned to the dorm and you weren't there!" started the red cloak leader.
"We thought something might have happened to you" added the Schnee heiress.
"Ruby and Weiss made a bet you were going to challenge Professor Himeko again" Blake had the guts to say it.
Both girls gasped staring at the amber eyed girl while Yang sweat dropped and the Valkyrie gave a chuckle.
"I can't believe this, you guys really thought I was going to fight her again!?"
"Did you?" said the silver eyed reaper.
"You're here and so is Professor Himeko" replied her partner.
"I didn't! I was-I AM angry at her but not stupid enough to challenge her a second time!"
"I mean it's you…." the petite blurted out.
Yang sighed before turning to the red head who kept a smile. She wasn't going to lie she was feeling a little better. Her pride was still crushed but she wasn't holding so much anger towards the red head teacher. Most importantly, keeping her teammates worried for so long.
"Guys I-I'm sorry. I didn't mean to worried you all. I needed some time off. It wasn't right to ignore you the way I did when you're my teammates and even my own sister. Weiss, Blake, Ruby-"
The girl just gave her a big hug as she accepted it. The brawler teared up a bit how she hated making others worried for her when she's supposed to be the one to look after the team. She was the mother figure of RWBY and it was going to stay that way. Breaking the embrace as Ruby saw that Yang-like smile on her face again.
"You're back to normal?"
"Good to be back!"
"We had a small talk and came to an understanding" spoke Himeko.
"That's good" smiled Blake.
"At least things will be a little normal around here" followed Weiss.
"All right. It's all good now. Time to head back. Tomorrow will be another hard study intense training day!"
"Okay, But, what happened to your hair Professor Himeko?" Ruby finally brought the topic.
"Yang cut it as a way to bury our hatchet."
The three girls stood still then staring at their blond teammate who was holding the big chunk of red hair.
"Does that mean you guys fought after all?" Weiss shocked.
"For real?" followed Blake.
"No way!" the petite leader was shocked.
"No, we-we didn't" the brawler turned to the Valkyrie who only winked, so she was letting her take credit for it.
"She lost a game of rock, paper, scissors to me and we agreed if I win I will cut her hair."
The red head hold her laughter rock, paper, scissors. Well, it was an improvement from an actual fight sort of. Giving it more thought, that will be something Kiana would come up with.
"What can I say, I'm not good at the game?"
"That's a relief uh-I mean not relief that you lost your hair Professor Himeko."
"I'm all right. I'm not going to cry and sulk on my bed for four days like a certain someone" the Valkyrie gave a grin.
Yang turned to her with a frown and her eyes turning red while she smiled sweetly. This team might have what it takes. All of the first year teams might have it. Not like she didn't believed in them. It was if they'll be able to face the real enemy when the time comes.
"I'm glad you didn't fought her again Yang."
"All thanks to you baby sis. Your words back at the dorm really woke me up out of my depression. I was acting like such an idiot I wasn't just letting myself down but the whole team. Thanks."
The brawler pulled her to another hug as Himeko kept smiling. This might be a sign that things might get better for them from now on.
"I still won the bet" spoke Weiss.
"Wait-So you guys DID bet on me facing her?" sweat dropped the blond.
"I bet you weren't going to challenged her because one time is enough and after that defeat, no one would would even try."
"You voted against me?" Yang kept staring at the red cloak girl.
"I swear I wanted to bet the other way but, I remembered when dad gave you your first hair cut it wasn't a pretty sight."
"You owe me thirty lien Ruby" replied the Schnee heiress.
"I can't believe you! My own sister doubted me I should give you noogies in return."
"No! We agreed no more noogies!"
The red head only laughed.
To be continued
-And thus concludes the Yang/Himeko fight sorry if it took a little long. I am planning to make chapters where Himeko will bond with each members of the class in the future.
-Just to let you know updates for this story will be slow due that I'm currently reading the Honkai manga and I also want to know more about the Honkai. I admit I was a bit clueless since I only play the game and I'm not that well informed. Therefore updates will be slow I hope you understand. Don't get me wrong I already know how v1 will go as well as v2.
-Replying to reviews:
*Ultimate Kuuga- I knew you were kidding lol. And don't worry if you got VK Himeko I'm not upset. I got CH Theresa, HOV Kiana and Phoenix Fu Hua 3 S ranks over sacrificing my choice to get VK I'd say that's a good deal if I do say so myself.
*TheEmeraldMage- well someone needed to do it because I find it dumb they would never lose their weapon during a fight scene. Thanks again for the constant support. Just to let you know Rita's JP VA also voices Lumine from Genshin Impact and Ai-chan's VA voices Paimon so it should be obvious Honkai voice actors will also be voicing on another Mihoyo game.
*ZeroTheOne- she already got what she deserved and learned her lesson we might be seeing a whole new side of her.
*damienfoxy- Thanks and Yang lost as expected.
*Kamen Rider Chrome- exactly she needed a severe punishment to realize her mistake and Himeko knew where to hit her, her hair.
*Guest- the difference between Yang and Adam, she didn't kill anyone. Sure she might have a bad temper but she's aware not to go way overboard. Not to mention she didn't hurt the people that were dancing. While Adam on the other hand would kill anyone without hesitating.
*PoofyOhio- I'm always more than eager to accept constructive criticism because there's a big difference between that and an actual flame. So thank you again.
*Eternal Emperorof Zakuul- yep though Qrow doesn't much his fists but Ironwood definitely even if he uses his guns he's a good melee character. Everyone must learn the basics because relying too much on your weapon is a flaw mistake.
*InnocentSorrow- thank you here's the new chapter.
*The True Skull- here you go it's finally over sorry for dragging it for too long. XD
*Guest- what? What's AO3?
*willywonka3234- thank you
*Techpriest5154- thank you and here's finally the new chapter.
*Gry24- she did won there was no way Yang was going to win even with using her semblance.
-Honkai news I've been enjoying 4.7 and Haxxor Bunny Bronya aka Bronie and so happy with the new event as well as resuming my quest to get good equipment need more 5 star weapons and stigmata. 384 days playing the game wow, it seems like yesterday I started. XD I also like the new S rank Starchasm Nyx who is Veliona that will be available in 4.8 (Seele's alter ego).
-As always thank you very much for the favs, follows and reviews I really appreciate it.
Next time: The Badge and the Burdendice
