The basement was nothing like I expected, yet it was completely normal. At the base of the stairs there was a friendly area with two bean bag chairs along the wall. There were also some wooden chairs around a table with a half finished puzzle on it. An open cupboard sat against the wall next to the beanbags. It was filled with puzzles and games. It also seemed to act as a dividing line to the other end of the basement where there were laundry baskets for clean and dirty clothes and a washer and drying machine. The open door at the end seemed to lead to the small shower area they'd let me use once or twice, and there was another locked door next to it. Everything was neat and organized except one basket had quite a bit of clothing in it. It was labeled as Sans' clean clothes.

"Wow. It's amazing down here. What's behind the other door?"

"my lab. i doubt you want to go back in there so soon. i may need you to go back in eventually—with the door unlocked, of course—so I can better work on getting you home."

"Right, but not yet. So what types of games do you have?" I questioned wandering over to the shelves.

Sans was already sitting in one of the beanbag chairs. He just shrugged. I looked at the games. A few of them I'd already played with Papyrus, after he somehow got them past Sans' security check.

"You have Othello? I actually like that one. Why Didn't Papyrus bring it in?"

"that thing? we never found the instructions. it's amazing it even has all the pieces. papyrus just likes to mess around with it."

"Well, I know how to play. Want to learn? It's not that hard to learn."

"hm… ya know what bud, sure. i'll play."

"All right!" I smiled, but I paused, looking at Sans. My smile didn't fade. "I'm totally going to lose," I finished, sitting on the ground as Sans teleported to be across from me.

"wow bud, don't be so hard on yourself. i don't even know how to play yet."

"Yeah, but it's easy to learn. Not so easy to win. Just because I like the game doesn't mean I'm any good at it. I'm actually really not, so chances are, you'll be better at it," I explained setting up the game. "Who knows, maybe I'll surprise myself. Ready?"

"soon as you explain."

"Good. One of us is the white side of the pieces and the other is black. The point is to have more of your color at the end. We start with these four in the middle and you flip pieces by placing your color next to the enemies where yours is on the other side. Like this, or this." I explained, giving some examples. "Feel free to ask questions. You can even lay out pieces to ask."

Sans nodded. He laid out the pieces in a few different scenarios to ask me questions before returning the board to the start. "but what if you can't flip anything?"

"Different people play differently, but I've always played where it's the other player's turn. You have to flip something to lay a piece. If I can't go either, then you can place a piece wherever. Same for me until we have places we can go. The game is over when the board is filled."

"kay. i got it. now, you might lose." Sans smirked.

"Oh, you're on." We started the game, and I was right, Sans completely destroyed me. "Again?" I asked, despite the almost entirely white field in front of me.

"sure."

I stood a slightly better chance the second time, but Sans still annihilated me and I was pretty sure he was going easy on me now.

"Again?"

"ya sure you want me to beat you again?"

"We'll see about that," I countered, despite having no doubt I'd lose again. I was surprised that we seemed to be pretty even, until we counted the pieces. Sans won by one piece and had the smuggest grin on.

"looks like i almost lost there," he said, not even trying to hide the fakeness of his concern.

"I have two words to describe you right now, Sans. Show. Off." I huffed, despite the smile forcing its way onto my face. "That's not even right for you to manage that and don't say it wasn't intentional."

"it was completely pun-intentional."

"Yeah, I don't think so. That shouldn't even be allowed."

"and yet i get away with it easily."

"Sure you do." I sighed. "Seeing as how I clearly can't win, you want to beat me again?" I smiled. "Or do you have somewhere else you should be?"

"i don't need to be anywhere. what makes you think i would?"

"Papyrus isn't here all the time and—despite being there a lot—you weren't always in the lab. And I'm, uh, sorry for pulling from the game, but… didn't you have about five jobs? What happened to those?"

"oh, that. no, i don't have a job anymore. in fact, you might as well be my job. i don't get paid for that though. no one does. we monsters don't have the same currency as you humans, and with all the moving around jobs are questionable. because of that were operating on a system of 'help where you can' until things settle down, which pap is more than happy to do. when they found out about this, and the kiddos gave their input, i got stuck here taking care of you."

"Oh. You're not really stuck here, though. Are you?"

"no."

"Well then, about that game. Again?" I questioned, smiling.

"don't you want to do anything different? there's more house."

"Other than your rooms and your lab?"

"no."

"Then why mention it? I don't want to go in your lab until I have to and your rooms are your space. Give me some credit here, Sans. I'm curious, not intentionally rude. You're not just a fictional character anymore, and I already know too much. If your rooms are different from the game, or the same, then it's not my right to know if you don't want me to."

"and you assume i don't want you to."

"You just let me out of your lab and made it quite clear you don't trust me. Sounds like a fair assumption to me," I answered, finally cleaning off the game board. "Do you want to play again or not? We could play a different game, or you could just leave me here. I could do a puzzle or something."

"you aren't even going to try? not even ask?"

I shrugged, assuming he was still asking about their rooms. "Probably not."

Sans just stared at me.

"Why are you so focused anyway. I said I'm fine here. If you're looking for a trick, you won't find it. Am I putting this away?" I asked, ready to slide the game back in its box then to the cupboard.

Sans shrugged. "sure bud."

I carefully put the game away, then stared at the other games and puzzles.

"hey, bud. what do you think of my bro?"

"Papyrus?" I asked, confused by the randomness of the question, but quickly recovering. I smiled brightly. "I think he's just as great as he says he is. He's kind, caring, and an amazing cook. He's a little loud, but there are worse things a person can be. Besides…" I paused, my smile becoming sad as I ran my finger along one of the game boxes. "I'd still be tied up if it weren't for him, or at least, the small freedoms I've gained would have taken much longer. I'm really quite grateful," I whispered, turning to look at Sans. "Or am I wrong in that assumption?"

Sans didn't answer, but he wouldn't look at me.

"Despite that, I do think you're pretty cool too. You did get me here after all, and that doesn't sound like an easy thing to do." My smile grew again. "And you do listen to Papyrus and you did let me out. Also, Frisk and Chara are nice too. It will be fun to properly play some more games with them now that I can access them." I stopped, frowning slightly. "I am allowed to get into these without you, right? I know you said I'm free in Snowdin town, but this is still your guy's stuff."

"you're free to play with the games and puzzles."

"What's with the one on the table?" I asked, sitting in front of the cupboard.

"it's new. papyrus is fixing it."

"Fixing?"

"replacing any missing pieces, if there are any. there normally are."

"Replacing? With a blank piece?"

"the slander," Sans gasped, placing a hand over his chest as if I'd wounded him. "how dare you suggest the great papyrus would ever do something so lazy." Sans smirked, quickly relaxing. "nah, he's cooler than that. he paints the piece so it will fit the puzzle. he can't stand not being able to finish them. he also enjoys being the first to finish them, so i wouldn't suggest messing with it."

"Got it. That's so cool if he can actually paint the pieces to fit. I've got to try one of these puzzles at some point, just to see if I can tell."

"you can. not because of the painting, but the different material."

"Oh."

"hey bud. come here."

I closed up the cupboard, slightly confused as I wandered over to Sans. I was even more confused when he lightly grabbed my arm without warning and teleported us somewhere else.

AN: More house!

Yeah, Lilly isn't so good at games, but that's one of the cool things about undertale. It's not too terribly difficult depending on how you play. It's also not insanely long unless you want to hunt down every detail, and yet it still has plenty to make it enjoyable for a lot of people. Even some people who never play the game.
