Fury stood next to the table of heroes. Tony, Bruce, Peter, Steve, Clark, and Natasha were silent. Coulson was killed in Loki's escape and they all knew it could have been stopped if they could work together as a team, if they could have been united they wouldn't have lost him.

"These were in Coulson's pocket, I guess he never did get you to sign them" Fury remarked tossing the trading cards across the table at Cap as he took a deep breath and decided to reveal what he needed to, something for them to get behind "Yes, we were going to use the cube to make weapons but I never but all my eggs in that basket." he stated looking around the people in the room, his "Avengers"

"There was an idea and Stark knows this, called the Avengers Initiatve. The idea was to bring together a group of remarkable people to see if they could become something more, to work together when we needed them to, to fight the battles that we never could" He stopped at the only empty chair among them "Phil Coulson died believing in that idea, in heroes" he said somberly as the team look angry, not at Fury but at themselves for not being the heroes that Coulson thought they could be so each of them.

Bruce met Natasha to check on Clint as Peter and Clark helped get the wounded to the infirmary as Tony and Steve talked about Coulson before the Genius figured out where Loki was going to put out the word. Clark flew off to find Diana and Thor as Cap readied Natasha, Clint, and Peter to get on a jet and Bruce took a head start with his own, asking for Alfred to task the Tumbler across the river as he figured he might get more miles out of it on the ground than using his jet.

Tony went to the tower, first trying to break the barrier before confronting Loki who had a simple question "What have I to fear?" Tony poured his drink before almost smugly answering "The Avengers, that's what we call ourselves, earth's mightiest heroes that sort of thing" he mused as Loki grinned "I've met them" he replied as Tony nodded and grimaced "Takes us a while to get any traction, I'll give you that one but lets do a head count here, a pair of demi gods, your brother included, a man with breathtaking anger issues, a one man army, a super solider, a man with amazing reflexes, the last son of a dying world, and a pair of master assassin's, and you've managed to piss off every single one of them" he spoke sliding his bracelets on. Loki smiled "That was the plan" Tony replied in kind "Not a great plan, when they come, and they will. They'll come for you, there is no throne and no version of this where you come out on top, because if we can't protect the earth, you can be damn well sure we'll avenge it"

"How can they fight me when they'll be too busy fighting you?" Loki asked tapping the spear to Tony's chest before being stunned it didn't work, after a few snide remarks Tony was thrust through the window before his suit met him before making impact to the ground and he flew back up to the window "there was one other person you pissed off, his name was Phil"

The portal opened above the tower as Tony heard a gust of wind behind him, it was Clark. "This looks, horrible" He remarked before Tony turned to him and the two flew up after the aliens, Clark trying to keep them contained as Tony fought them coming around the buildings, Diana entered the fray by crashing onto a leviathan and bringing it to the ground below Stark tower. Clark gave up stopping them from entering as their numbers grew too large for him and he landed behind Steve on the ground. Tony was still in the air as Bruce arrived in his Tumbler, ejecting and handing it to Alfred as he looked up "Is there anyway to close the portal?" He asked before Tony chimed in "I blasted it and got nothing, it's made of pure energy and we aren't getting through, invasion is coming" He spoke as the group looked around at the aliens crashing to the planet.

"Where's Banner?" Tony asked still maneuvering around the buildings as Clark burned one Chitauri after another but felt like he was getting nowhere.

Steve noticed civilians were being corralled into the street, easy targets for the army so he reasoned a plan to help them "Kal, Diana I need you keeping the sky clear, everyone else hold the line on the ground" he ordered before hopping off the bridge to chase the police down, get a containment area for the damage.

Once the perimeter was set up Steve returned to the team on the bridge as did Thor, Diana, and Clark.

Tony brought the leviathan around the block and Banner began to walk as Steve spoke "Dr. Banner, now might be a really good time for you to get angry"

"That's my secret Cap, I'm always angry" he said and almost on command he turned into the Hulk, stopping the Leviathan in it's tracks as he punched it. the back half of the creature shot up and stopped in the sky, Clark and Tony both firing on it as it exploded

The Chitauri on the surrounding buildings all screamed at the team as the Avengers readied themselves in the street staring above at the hell that awaited the city of New York.
