Chapter 6: The power of the soul.

———————————————————————————

Earth, United Kingdom.

Scotland, Hogwarts.

Fourth year boy's dormitory.

November 11, 1994.

Harry had just woken up, while it was still early and despite how much he would appreciate the extra sleep, the excitement that he had to finally see his sister in action was overwhelming and that the loud snoring coming from a redhead wouldn't allow it either way; Harry still felt a bit bad that their friendship had fallen but curiously he didn't pay much attention to it, it kinda was as he had expect it or was simply too distracted to pay any mind to it….it probably was the latter. he shook his head to get rid of those thoughts and decided to get up and get ready for the day, either way at some point Hermione would have found a way to wake him up. He smiled at that thought.

Once he was already dressed, he went to the common room. Harry was the only one at the time but knew that his sister and her team were already in their classes, he decided to wait and do some homework for a bit.

After a while he heard footsteps coming from the stairs, he turned around and saw just the person he was waiting for. He smiled and waved at Hermione as she came to him and sat beside him on the couch, she was still sleepy but returned the gesture.

"What are you doing up so early?" Hermione asked, yawning halfway through.

"Excitement wouldn't let me go back to sleep."

"What are you studying?" She asked, leaning a bit closer to him to catch a glimpse of the book.

"Some defense spells… but I was thinking of lowering the amount of defense to thirty percent so I could train a bit more in my offensive."

Hermione raised an eyebrow at this, genuinely curious by his decision, "why's that?"

"Because the best defense is a good offense." He said in a matter of fact tone, causing both to smile and laugh silently.

They spent the rest of the time before going to breakfast in a comfortable silence, that only broke when one had a suggestion or a question; by the time they went to have breakfast the Great Hall was already full of students. Both of them thought that it was quite weird to see it this full on a sunday morning, but when they heard the gossip about today was. They were not surprised at all, after all, news do travel fast in Hogwarts.

Everyone was murmuring about the training of the Remnant people and how they were going to be able to finally watch the Girl-Who-Vanished in action. Harry laughed in his head, they didn't know what they were getting into, he hadn't seen any of the fights his sister got in, but going by what little Ruby had told him. Those fights got bloody crazy and he couldn't wait to see that craziness. He started to think that maybe if Ruby would like to see some of his own classes… even if they were boring compared to what she must study.

He didn't notice Hedwig was coming until she started pecking him to make him give her some food. He grabbed the letter from Hedwig and gave her something to eat.

'Harry, the training should start in about half an hour after the letter arrives I would tell you personally but Goodwitch wants us to make sure we're good with our normal studies so I quickly wrote this and gave it to Hedwig.

You will have to head to the quidditch pitch, that's the place where we had enough space to train and to be able to have all of the school to watch, we know that somehow the news of being able to watch has already spread over the whole school, so have fun!

-Ruby Rose.

P.D. save me some cookies and strawberries :P'

Harry smiled as he finished reading the letter, he passed the letter to Hermione while he looked for a bag or something to save some of the treats that his sister asked for.

When Hermione finished reading the letter she tapped Harry. "Do I?" Harry gave her a confused look until it clicked and nodded. Hermione suddenly stood up along with a loud thump, gaining the attention of everyone in the Great Hall. "EVERYONE THE TRAINING OF THE REMNANT PEOPLE WILL BE ROUGHLY IN THIRTY MINUTES IN THE QUIDDITCH PITCH!!"

Immediately after she shouted this the rest of the students ran to either the quidditch pitch or to their rooms to get some more clothing, they were in the middle of fall so the air started to be a bit more cold. Somehow, in less than five minutes the Great Hall was empty except for Harry, who was just finishing packing the food in a paper bag he found, Hermione who was finishing her meal and the staff, which was clearly dumbfounded at how fast the Great Hall emptied. They had assumed that it would have at least taken fifteen minutes for all the students to leave but they had done it in a third of the time needed.

"Are you finished or do I have to wait a bit more?" Harry asked, grabbing a strawberry.

"Actually I just finished," She said as she got up and followed Harry out to the quidditch pitch, "I hope they aren't overwhelmed by the whole school watching them."

"I sincerely doubt it." Harry didn't know why but he felt that all of them have already fought with an audience.

"How about we hurry so you can talk to her a bit?"

"Yeah, we should do that."

When the two students arrived they could see that the quidditch pitch was almost full and that they could see the three teams stretching, except for Ruby. She was talking with her professor, and going by her irritated expression and how she was shaking her head, it looked as if they were talking about something Ruby refused to do.

Professor Goodwitch dismissed Ruby and started to do something in her scroll, Ruby joined the rest of her team in the center of the pitch. Harry was in awe as he watched Ruby twirl her scythe as if it was a baton, along with that girl Nora and her giant hammer; and Hermione was wondering how in the world did a weapon like that work.

"RUBY!" Harry yelled. Ruby stopped twirling her scythe around, stabbing it in the ground beside her, she turned around and saw Harry and Hermione practically beaming at them.

She waved them over with a smile and herself coming a bit closer so they could be safe from the swinging weapons. "Hey guys!" She said with a cheerful voice. "What's up?"

"Nothing special other than watching you guys train." Harry said, not being able to even contain his excitement, and with how clear it was it made Ruby laugh.

"I can see your excitement from miles, y'know?" She teased.

"Well how can I not be excited!? I can finally see if your battle gets as crazy as you say!!"

"Calm down Harry, it's just training. I doubt they get that crazy." Hermione said, but it was obvious that she was as excited as him. Ruby let out a snort. Actually the whole school was, if the amount of people in the stands were anything to go by.

"Team RWBY and JNPR, please come to the arena." Glynda called without looking up from her scroll; Hermione really wondered how that even worked in Hogwarts.

"It'd be better if you kept your distance." She winked at them and went to get her scythe.

The two nodded and went up the stands to join their house, but were stopped by team FLMB. They led the two to a closer but safe place in which they were going to watch the match; the team also put themselves in front of them, in case something happened. Meanwhile CFVY was making sure nothing happened to the spectators.

They saw as both JNPR and RWBY talked on opposite sides of the makeshift arena, probably thinking on strategies. Harry hoped that the quidditch pitch wouldn't get so damaged.

"Hey guys?" The team turned to look at Hermione. "How crazy do the fights get?"

"Let's just say that one time our team and theirs had to repair the training arena without help and our weapons almost had to be reforged." Murasaki said, shaking her head trying to fight the headache coming while the rest of her team were laughing. She really didn't like that memory.

Harry and Hermione paled.

——

Team RWBY was trying to think of a strategy good enough to beat JNPR; while both teams had seriously improved it couldn't be denied that most battles now ended in a draw, but still with RWBY winning more often than not. Goodwitch had given them some time before the match to organize themselves.

"Ok, so we agreed already on the order; first Nora, then Jaune, Ren and finally Phyrra, so we are able to overwhelm her." Their leader explained.

"That makes sense, but how are we gonna get rid of Nora? she's the second toughest." Weiss asked.

"I was thinking in ring out." Ruby started, "Whatever, this is the plan…"

——

Meanwhile with JNPR…

"So...how are we doing this?" Nora asked, looking curiously at the blonde.

"I was thinking of taking Ruby out first, she is the easiest to distract. Then we could take Blake or Weiss…." Jaune was passing all the different outcomes or better strategies against their friends.

"I think we are going to take a lot of time to knock Ruby out, she will be trying to show these people that she isn't defenseless and to not mess with her even if she doesn't know how to use her magic." His partner interrupted.

"Pyrrha is right, I doubt that Ruby will be holding back and that she doesn't already have a plan to win against us." Ren added to finish his teammate's thought.

"Well, we just gotta figure out their plan and then we improvise." Jaune said with a confident smile.

"Aaaand! You're the best at thinking in the moment!!" Nora said, punching the air.

"Prepare to fight!" Glynda yelled, by this point, everyone in the stands was silent, they wanted to be able to hear everything.

The eight of them were already in position to jump into the fight, their eyes were focused on their opponents and their hands were gripping the weapons thightly. They could hear the conversations that came from the stands but barely as hushed whispers to them.

While waiting for the fight to begin, Ruby saw how Jaune appeared to be analyzing her team. Just what she needed. She knew that Jaune was better at making plans at the moment, so she needed to be careful...but she also just knew that most of those strategies just included making Nora K.O. everyone with her hammer.

"Begin!" Glynda yelled.

Immediately after the signal was given, the two teams jumped into action. Ruby made her way through her teammates with her semblance, quickly turning into thousands of petals and successfully managed to separate JNPR individually. When Ruby made sure that they could not rea-group she dashed to Pyrrha in a flurry of rose petals, while Blake tried to distract Ren, Yang and Weiss went for Nora and Jaune tried to help Pyrrha, but was pushed back several times by Ruby and brought to the fight against Yang and Weiss.

When the redhead saw her coming, she tried to dodge only for Ruby to stop at her side, for Pyrrha everything slowed down she saw as Ruby's scythe was raised high as if ready to slash, she knew her friend had something planned but didn't know what it was. The only thing she did not expect was to see Ruby quickly sheathe Crescent Rose and punch her square in the face.

The cheers from the people here were louder than before, but they tuned it out and focused on the task at hand. Ruby started to engage Pyrrha in a barehanded combat, the mistralian had to acknowledge that Ruby's hand to hand combat had improved visibly over the last three years, but even so she could not win against her alone. After a particularly well placed punch, she could hear Ruby shouting. "Weiss, now!" then she heard the sound of a glyph forming beneath her, she dodged but afterwards felt a pull to the ground so strong that she fell to her knees. 'Gravity Glyph' She thought as she saw how Jaune went from helping Nora in her fight to trying to break Weiss' focus.

It was after a hit in the face with his shield that her focus broke enough to let Pyrrha stand again as the glyph started to weaken, but it still kept her in place. She then changed Miló to its carabine form and shot several times at Weiss, that was the final straw; the glyph under her vanished allowing her to move again. She dashed forward, and was stopped short when a boot connected with her face sending her back. Ruby came back, she engaged in hand to hand again, Pyrrha decided to play along and sheathed Miló and Akuó, so the hand to hand combat between the youngest student and the mistralian champion began.

Meanwhile Jaune and Weiss were in an intense sword fight. Weiss was constantly trying to make a glyph to keep Pyrrha in place but kept being interrupted by a slash or a shield hit from Jaune. She had to change the plan a little. She stopped focusing on Pyrrha and started to exchange blows, where she had been only dodging.

She started to try and gain enough time to form a certain glyph, eventually Jaune changed his sword and shield combo for the broadsword mode that he added last year, and was better with it. Everyone was confused at first when they saw him sheathing the sword but immediately cheered when they saw the broadsword. Weiss struggled a bit but thankfully for her, she still had an advantage in this fight. She decided to use it.

Jaune went for a vertical slash, one which she easily blocked keeping both of them in place, trying to break each other's defense. Jaune would have used his shield, but right now it is a part of his sword and he cursed internally for that. Weiss used the first second to make a gravity glyph under him just to keep him in place. He noticed right away but couldn't do much, maybe only if he managed to break her defense; his concentration failed him when he saw her smirk. His eyes widened, he knew that smirk like the back of his hand, when he heard the gasp that came from the crowd and the sound of something forming behind him, he confirmed what he suspected "...damn it…"

"Indeed my friend…" Weiss said sarcastically. She then made a movement with her right hand, and in less than a second Jaune was hit by the Arma Gigas that had been summoned in the matter of seconds, he was sent flying and landed at the feet of team FLMB.

"Jaune Arc is out!" he heard Glynda yell.

"You ok there, vomit boy?" Flame asked, smirking with Harry and Hermione looking at him incredulous.

"Oh great the nicknames are back…" Jaune said from his place on the floor.

Everyone took that as his signal of being fine and turned to watch the rest of the fight, and it looked very one sided. Pyrrha was on her knees again by a glyph but was trying to break Weiss' focus; the Arma Gigas had already been destroyed by either Nora or Ren. Weiss and Yang were against Nora, and Ruby and Blake were busy with Ren.

Harry and Hermione watched in terror how Nora swung her hammer right at Yang but were skeptical when she easily stopped it and how her hair was now in lit up in flames and her eyes changed from a warm lilac to a raging crimson red, while they saw how some marks in Nora's body had started to be more noticeable, and at one moment the saw sparks of electricity. Yang changed the grip on the hammer and after Weiss made a glyph to help her; the two were equal in strength but Yang started to be on the losing side until an incoming Weiss crashed onto Nora and made her lose enough balance to let the brawler gain the upper hand.

Yang adjusted her grip on Magnhild and threw it with enough force to make Nora go along with it. She went flying to one of the walls of the quidditch pitch and even went through one of the walls, her aura flickered before breaking in a cloud of particles.

"Nora Valkyrie is out by double knock out!" Glynda yelled while Murasaki and Coco grabbed Nora and her weapon out of the hole she had made, then Glynda repaired the damage done with a flick of her riding crop.

"That was more difficult than I thought…" Yang deactivated her semblance and quickly checked her aura, it was in the orange.

"Well, your semblances work similarly and Ren and Pyrrha were aiding her so it made sense." Weiss said, then the two nodded and went to help Ruby and Blake.

"Finally, we need help and Blake's aura is almost in the red." Ruby said as soon as her feet touched the ground.

"Did she take hits from Nora?" Ruby nodded and looked over where Blake was, it was obvious that she was exhausted.

"Freezerburn!" Weiss and Yang nodded; while the students and professors of Hogwarts watched in confusion as Weiss changed the chamber in Myrtenaster and stabbed the blade into the ground, forming a cape of ice over the ground, but the confusion disappeared after Yang had leaped into the air and punched the cape of ice creating a mist and hiding the current fight from eyesight.

Ren knew something like this was coming, so he used one of his most trained abilities. He started tracking the auras of his friends, the first aura he detected was the one of his teammate's then Ruby's then Weiss',whose aura was slowly depleting, Yang's and lastly Blake's. He decided to go against the heiress, he needed help.

While he managed to dodge or parry the hits and shots from the other three he still struggled, even more when he was focused on a sole target. The mist was starting to disperse but it had managed to cause enough trouble to the two remaining members of JNPR. Pyrrha had been trying to break free, but so far she hadn't had good luck, and had tried to help her teammate. For Ren it was almost the same except for not being able to determine from where exactly they came, and right now? He was exchanging blows with RWBY's former ninja, apparently Weiss had been close to Blake, making him engange her instead of his original target; this time, the fight was a more short one, Blake's aura was already low due to their previous fight and that one even managed to get his aura on the orange.

Ren finished her with slashes from Storm Flower along with fire dust shots, breaking her aura. "Blake Belladonna is out!" By this time the mist had already disappeared and Blake started to walk out the improvised arena, she collapsed halfway to FLMB and Laisha came to her and helped her up.

"You're exhausted, right?" Her friend just nodded, they reached the others and Laisha let Blake lay on the ground.

"Lie Ren is out!" Everyone wiped their heads to the arena, they saw Ren laying in the ground near the limit of it. The conclusion: the girls managed to get him out. Bradley went to help him once he saw him struggling to get up, conclusion number two: Yang did it.

Back in the fight, Weiss, Yang and Ruby were ready to knock out Pyrrha. Weiss looked at her leader and received a nod in return, she then proceeded to vanish the glyph; their opponent stood and drew her weapon, she was extremely wary of them and watched them closely, analyzing their every move.

"Spring…" Ruby whispered, Weiss and Yang nodded and got in position. Weiss changed the chamber on Myrtenaster again and charged, Yang following closely and Ruby in a flurry of rose petals. Pyrrha saw them charge at her at different times and thought that it may be a bit easier to deal with them if she managed to separate them; that was until they were a second away from her and all of them were charging at her at the same fucking time.

She dodged and parried all the hits she could and with the aid of her semblance managed to get a few hits on them, but was mostly trying to survive. The three pulled back and quickly checked their auras, Yang had the lowest; they proceeded to finish the fight.

Weiss made a glyph under Yang and Ruby, aidin them to leap into the air. Using the last of her aura, Yang grabbed Ruby and activated her semblance. She launched her sister to Pyrrha, the leader took the advantage of the impulse and activated her semblance and passed through a time dilation semblance making her faster. By the time she reached Pyrrha, said person had, in no way or form, time to be able to even block; she took the hit directly but it only left her aura flickering, just what they needed.

When Yang had landed her aura was about to break and Pyrrha thought to at least do something. She activated her semblance and yanked Yang to her by her gauntlets; the sudden movement had startled her and did not let her focus properly. As soon as she was within the range of Pyrrha she was met with an aura infused punch to her jaw, one that was strong enough to break her aura and sent her flying outside the arena.

"Yang Xiao Long is out by double knock out!" their professor announced once again while their friends came to help her up.

Even if Pyrrha's aura had lowered enough to be able to break with a few hits, Weiss and Ruby still needed a way to get hits on her. Weiss then just needed to confirm the order. "Ice Flower?" Her partner and leader nodded.

Ruby stabbed the blade of her scythe on the ground to stop the recoil while Weiss made glyphs in front of the canon of Crescent Rose, Pyrrha prepared to dodge the bullets. As Ruby started to fire she was only able to land five shots of the approximately twenty, two on her left leg, one on the right, and two on her left hand, stopping her from using her shield as a frisbee. Weiss then made a glyph that allowed Ruby to get a bit of impulse, the silver-eyed girl adjusted the grip on her scythe and jumped from the glyph, aiding herself a bit with her semblance; Pyrrha tried to block with her javelin and it actually helped her as she landed outside the arena and the last of her aura broke.

"Pyrrha Nikos is out by double knockout! Team RWBY wins!" Glynda's voice is heard before the whole stadium bursts into cheers and you can see the redhead struggling to get up while the two people left on the arena were clearly exhausted leaning on their knees or straight up collapsing to the floor--like in Ruby's case.

——

To say that the immense showcase of power that has just been shown didn't make everyone scared of the Remnant people would be a huge understatement; and let's just say that the Potters along with Sirius and Remus were worried for Ruby.

Lily was straight up freaking out, she just couldn't believe what just happened. She knew that her daughter could fight and keep up but when she saw how mad the fight had gotten and how many hits, falls and shoots her little girl got she even more worried by the second. Also, by the time the fight had finished she was already running down to check on Ruby, with the marauders hot on her heels.

When the four of them arrived at the improvised arena--that Goodwitch had started to do some repairs to--Ruby's friends and teammates were already there, checking on the people that had remained in the arena after the fight. Ruby was still on the floor but was now groaning as the adrenaline from the fight wore down and the pain from the hits taken started to catch up with her. Weiss just had to catch her breath and let her aura do the rest.

"Hey Rubes, you alright?" Yang asked, lightly kicking her sister to make sure she was fine.

"Stop it…" she smacked her sister's foot before trying to get up. "but I think I may have some mild concussion…" She said as she held her head, Pyrrha did get a few good hits to her head.

Madam Pomfrey arrived at the same time as the Potters, Hermione, Remus and Sirius; she had started to check on everyone's injuries, fortunately they didn't seem to be badly injured, just some bruises that would apparently disappear in a few hours. Maybe except for Ruby, she was going to have a small headache for the rest of the day and possibly tomorrow.

Even so, she was still getting asked for a whole ton of autographs or pictures by literally the whole school, and Ruby actually accepted Harry's offer of going to some of his classes. Though she would have to see with Glynda when she was allowed to.

——

The general staff of the schools along with the members of the ministry were in total amazement at the demonstration that had just occurred, although most of them were trying to stop their jaws from hanging open. They had seriously thought that the lost Potter wouldn't have any chances of even surviving the first task, but after seeing her take multiple shots, hits, slashes and possibly some small explosions and look merely scratched made all those thoughts vanish immediately.

Dumbledore watched the whole fight and aftermath with an amused smile, her skill was better than what he thought although he felt there was something that the young Ruby was hiding, something more powerful than they might be able to imagine. This was going to be interesting. And, apparently, only now he could notice how smooth the dynamic between Ruby and her faunus teammate was; if he didn't regret even thinking about separating her from her friends and family already, he would've done even more if the relationship between those two was what he suspected. A melancholic smile came to his lips, remembering moments of his youth.

November 13, 1994.

It has been three days since both Lily and Remus started training Ruby in her magic, and so far she has been doing good, she was a quick learner. Even though the two sometimes worry for her because of the amount of times they have to take breaks.

Today it seemed there was nothing wrong, Ruby looked perfectly fine, even though they were showing her a more complex spell than she had been taught. She was learning the fire spell, Incendio , and it has been a few hours already without her being able to cast it, if only some little fire was able to come out, but apparently she was stubborn and did not want to change it like Lily and Remus recommended.

After some more tries, she relaxed and took a deep breath. Ruby rubbed her eyes, she wouldn't admit it but she was getting tired and she didn't know why. She thought that this was going to be more of mental tiredness not physical! nor both! Ruby sighed and got into position again.

"Incendio!" Ruby made the correct wand movements and this time it did work, making the mannequin in front of her catch on fire from the flames coming out the wand. Her eyes lit up at finally getting it right but right after casting it, she almost fell to her knees. Lily came to check on her while Remus made sure that the fire didn't spand.

"RUBY!" The three turned to see Ruby's team running to them, weapons at the ready.

"What happened? Is something wrong?" Ruby asked, panting hard and trying to not panic.

"What happened? What happened to YOU?!" At her partner's question she just looked at her confused.

"Your aura just dropped from green to RED!!!" Blake elaborated, glancing worriedly at her, Ruby's eyes went wide, and immediately asked for a scroll. One was practically shoved to her face, and there it was her aura indicator in the red area.

"Uhh...Lily?"

"Yes, Ruby?"

"Is the magic of a person somehow connected to the soul?" She turned to look at her, and Lily was taken aback.

"Uh...yes, the magical core is connected to your soul, why?" Lily was honestly surprised that Ruby connected the dots so fast. The team nodded with an understanding look on their faces.

"Well, do you remember what we told you about aura?" Yang asked and received a nod in return but both adults still didn't seem to connect the dots, leaving it to an elaboration. "The aura is the manifestation of one's soul and you said that the magical core is connected to the soul, so maybe the magical core is using her aura to do the magic…." She quickly explained doing vague hand motions.

"That...actually makes a lot of sense." Weiss said thoughtfully.

"Hey, I may not be the best in class but I am smart." While Yang and Weiss started bickering, Blake was transferring some of her aura to Ruby just to make it recharge a bit faster.

"I think we should head back to the castle, and have a nice meal after that whole little fiasco." Remus said with a calm tone and smile. Everyone agreed, mostly Ruby and Lily, and headed inside.

Now it was time to be able to relax a little, after all, there's only two weeks left before the task, and who knows maybe they will find out something interesting in the remaining time.

A/N: GUYS! I have a genuine question for you: why do you like the story so much? like I'm really curious as to why, not that I'm complaining. Also please tell me what you think of the battle, was it well written? and if you have some advice or constructive criticism about it I'd be glad to see it! and so you know I do use some of the recommendations you give, it helps me to construct the story, so if you see the reviews with them, the credit of the idea goes to them! I also decided to use one of the Harry Potter's fandom concepts...

'There are not names':Thanks for the idea of Lily freaking out! I really didn't think about that :P…

'Guest' and 'HarryPotterCrossoverMaster': As you already read in a part, yes, the team will be attending some classes, thank you for the idea! I'm already planning on how it will possibly play out.

I hope you enjoyed the chapter, I did my best as always!
