The next few months are uneventful. Emily still tries to call everyday but Spencer never answers so she continues to leave voicemails. He listens to each one now but can't think of what to say if he decides to answer her calls, so he doesn't.
Then, of course, things go poorly yet again. Spencer is shot in the neck after he pushes Blake out of the way and then Blake leaves the team soon after. Spencer is sad to have her leave, but understands why she has to. The team all makes it without her and then Kate Callahan joins the team, and she's nice but Spencer doesn't feel the same type of connection that he had with others and avoids becoming too close to her like with Blake and others before her.
But then, Gideon is murdered.
Spencer keeps it together for the sake of catching his killer, but once he gets back to his apartment that night he just breaks down. Meanwhile, JJ calls Emily and lets her know what happened and asks if she's going to come to the funeral. Emily says she will.
The funeral goes well, Rossi delivers a eulogy and it brings the team to tears. They go to a bar after and drink and tell stories about Gideon, and laugh, cry, and mourn together, which also gives Emily the chance to get to know Kate a bit. Spencer even interacts with Emily willingly, although he is a bit drunk as well.
Eventually everyone heads off and Emily goes back to her hotel room. It's not long till she hears knocking on her door and her name being called.
"Emilyyyyyyy," the one and only Spencer Reid drunkenly slurs as waits outside her door.
She giggles at the sight of Spencer in his drunken state and her heart melts at the huge smile that covers his face when he sees her, even though it's probably just because he's drunk.
"Emily!" he happily exclaims, rushing in the room and waiting for her to shut the door and follow him.
"How many drinks have you had Spencer?"
"Too many probably," he replies and they both laugh.
"So, what's up Spencer?"
"I just wanted to come see you," he responds, although she knows he isn't telling her the full truth and can see him becoming sad again as well.
"What's really going on Spencer?"
He looks over at her with tears in his eyes as he responds,"I'm just really sad. Gideon's gone and I know I hadn't seen him in a while but it just doesn't feel right. And I've missed you. So much."
Emily is fighting back tears now as Spencer leans against her and she wraps her arm around him to hold him.
"It's okay Spencer. I've missed you too."
"I listened to all the voicemails," he says quickly.
"What?"
"The voicemails you left. I've listened to all of them. And I wanted to call you or at least text you but I could never think of what I was gonna say to you," he says while crying, which is making Emily cry a bit as well because her heart just aches.
"Oh. Oh Spencer it's okay. I'm not upset about it. I left all the voicemails to let you know that I am here for you whenever you're ready."
"I know, but I just wish I would've worked up the nerve to speak to you again, even after how everything happened when you left."
"Spencer that wasn't you-" she starts before he interrupts her.
"Yes it was. I was taking stupid risks and being awful to you."
"Well I was pretty awful as well. Let's just say that it was both of our faults, how about that?" she says and he nods in agreement.
Spencer is starting to drift off, so Emily helps him get into the bed.
"But where are you gonna sleep?" he asks.
"On the other side of the bed. It's not like we haven't shared a bed before, and you're too drunk and tired to go anywhere else," she replies.
"Okay. Goodnight Emily."
"Goodnight Spencer," she says as she turns out the lights.
A few minutes later after Emily thinks Spencer is asleep she freezes when she hears him mumble,
"I still love you Emily."
Quietly she says,"I still love you too Spencer."
A few months after the funeral, Emily has left Interpol and rejoined the BAU, which makes the entire team happy, especially Spencer as the two of them slowly try one last time to make it work.
Spencer goes out to lunch with JJ and Morgan a few months after him and Emily are back together, and it's obvious he has something on his mind.
"Spence!" JJ says, regaining Spencer's attention.
"Huh?" he replies, not knowing what they were talking about.
JJ giggles as she says,"I was asking what you're thinking about. It's pretty obvious your thoughts aren't anywhere near here at the moment."
"Well I have a pretty good guess of who he's thinking about," Morgan adds, which makes Spencer blush and Morgan cheers at being correct.
"Uh well yeah, and that's kinda why I asked you guys to come to lunch with me as well," Spencer says nervously.
"Well come on pretty boy, spit out," Morgan says.
"Could you guys, uhm, come with me to go ring shopping?" Spencer says with a blush spreading across his face as JJ and Morgan share a wide eyed look with huge smiles on their faces before looking back at Spencer.
"Yes! Oh we will definitely help you with that," Morgan says as Spencer is paying the bill for lunch.
JJ grabs Spencer after he finishes paying and is basically dragging him out of the restaurant saying,
"Well come on you two, let's go find a ring!"
Spencer looks back at Morgan fearfully while Morgan is following behind laughing.
They end up going to multiple stores trying to find the best ring, which is a somewhat eventful time. At one store the employee helping them is extremely energetic and gives Spencer no time to think and breathe, terrifying him. Eventually the three of them escape that store and move onto the next.
Later Spencer finds a ring he likes, a medium size diamond ring.
"What do you guys think?" he asks them.
"I think it's perfect Spence," JJ says.
"She's going to love it kid," Morgan adds.
Spencer buys the ring and they leave the store. JJ asks,
"So when are you gonna propose, Spence?"
"I'm not sure yet. Soon, hopefully."
"Well don't rush it kid. Just do it whenever you're ready," Morgan adds.
"Alright. Thank you guys for helping me with this," Spencer says as the three of them hug.
"Of course Spence," JJ says.
"Anytime pretty boy," Morgan says as the three of them head home and Spencer gets back to planning how he wants to propose.
