She didn't know how long she sat there. She only looked up when the distant voices of the boys became particularly loud around the wrestling match. She realized that her sudden disappearance may have lasted for longer than she planned so she straightened herself back up and swiftly made her way back to the burning fire that was much lower now.
As she approached the party of boys, she was noticed first by Newt who she could see had a worried look as he walked around, his eyes scanning the area - he had probably noticed that she had gone missing. He was clearly relieved when he caught sight of her, though when she drew nearer he began to look concerned again as he studied her face.
"Hey... where were you? I was looking for you," he asked her more gently than she expected.
He looked her deep in the eyes and she suddenly felt so vulnerable. It was as if he was sifting through all her thoughts from the last hour she had been away.
"I... was just... exploring a little." She tore away from his gaze. She was so tired. She didn't want him to ask her anything more.
"There you are, Greenie! Have you tried Gally's brew yet?" It was that boy, Elias. He came up from behind her and offered her a full glass of that drink she had had earlier.
Thankful for the excuse to avoid further interrogation from Newt, she lied and shook her head, taking the glass that was being offered to her. Elias grabbed her arm and led her toward a patch of grass where she sat her down beside him.
"You remember me from yesterday, right? Before we were interrupted in our conversation by Nick?"
Elias kept talking and she kept pretending to listen, drinking whenever she didn't want to answer him much. Soon her head felt heavy and her vision started to haze over. She smiled easily now, not really understanding what was being said to her. It felt good to be so blunt for once. Besides, she didn't like the anxiety and despair that so frequently swept over her in this place.
Elias brought her generous refills and by the third time she had developed a hammering headache. She tried to refuse it by shaking her head but that only made it worse. She sighed a little as she brought her head up to her forehead and then moved it to feel the heat on the back of her neck.
Elias suddenly took her hand and moved closer. He leaned in and whispered something to her which she couldn't make out. He smelled heavily of the drinks they had been consuming and his breath tickled her ear. She let out a quiet giggle. She saw him smile at her as he brought the drink back to her mouth and poured the contents down her throat. She brought her hands up to stop him but his grip was too strong and she was too disoriented.
"Elias! Go easy on Greenie there. Holy shuck."
She thought she heard Newt or Nick. She couldn't make out who.
"Damn, you shanks. Always gotta... come INTER..RUPT our conversation!" Elias shouted and was slurring his words.
"Hey, hey, Greenie. Can you hear me?"
"I think we better call it a night."
"Minho. Can you take her?"
"Yeah.. come on."
"NOO!"
She was suddenly pulled on her legs up by Elias, swinging from his hard grip on her upper right arm. He moved her behind him and was yelling out things she didn't understand.
"Man, you drank too much of that stuff. Get your head straight."
"Hand over, Greenie, come on, let her loose before you get her hurt."
"She was talking to ME! Shuck off!"
"Gally, do something about him. He's in your crew."
"That's enough Elias."
He swayed her from side to side in his grasp, she felt her fingers going numb. She tried to free herself by pulling away, resulting in his hands closing around her tighter. She winced at the feeling and gasped as he almost tripped back on top of her.
"Hey-" Newt had grabbed the front neck of Elias's shirt, preventing him from stumbling again. He kept his hold steady as he stared Elias in the eye and commanded in a low voice, "let go of her, Elias." through gritted teeth.
She was swaying, her legs feeling like jelly from all the momentum and chaos. Her vision blurred even worse as she tried to stay up for a second longer by grabbing onto Elias's shoulder. His grip was still harsh. She also tried to grab onto the last bits of her consciousness but she was fighting a losing battle.
The last thing she saw was the sky. It had no stars.
