Hi everyone, there it is! There is Batman's rescue on Stryker Island. I hope you enjoy this chapter. Please let me know if I make grammar mistakes in my sentences.
Good reading!
Chapter 8: Batman
Stryker Island was teeming with the entire Regime's army. Several hordes of soldiers guarded the entrances to the penitentiary, ready to fight with their weapons. Superman floated in the sky, along with his sidekicks Hawkgirl, Sinestro, Black Adam and Yellow Lantern. All watched the prison from the sky. Superman watched the surroundings from the sky, convinced that Batman would come to rescue his counterpart from another Earth with the other doubles, the girl Maximoff and her thing.
Around the island, a face emerging from the waters. Aquaman's, being at the head of an army of sea creatures.
"There they are."Superman said when he saw the army of aquatic creatures heading towards the island.
With a wave of his finger, he ordered an assault on enemy. Superman and his henchmen rushed down, joining the Regime's soldiers to fight Aquaman's army of creatures.
Taking advantage of the absence of the Regime's soldiers, Batman, Wanda and Green Arrow walked towards the entrance of the prison. Wanda was amazed to see their way without the soldiers. They had all gone to fight Aquaman's army.
"He did it. He occupies them," she commented. "I didn't think it would be that easy!"
"Focus, Maximoff!" Batman snapped back. "Batman isn't out, yet! We're getting closer. Stay alert."
"Guys, we've company," Green Arrow announced, turning around and brandishing his bow.
The three of them whirled around and saw Nightwing rushing towards them, like a rampaging wild animal, followed by Catwoman. Nightwing knelt down, allowing the Catwoman to pounce on Batman, while Green Arrow confronted Nightwing.
"Hello Bruce," Catwoman greeted her former lover in a sweet voice. "Still as handsome as ever."
"Save it, Selina," the Dark Knight said dryly, indifferent to the flirtations of the woman resting on him.
"I'm sorry, Bruce," she said. "I joined him to protect you. He said if I helped find you he'd…"
"… spare me?" Batman retorted furiously.
"I didn't believe him. But it bought us time. I misdirected him..."
"Small comfort for the ones who died in my place," replied the Dark Knight, still with indifference and fury.
Batman pushed her aside as he tried to pull away but Catwoman stood in his way to fight him.
Wanda watched her two allies fight their enemies, not knowing who to help first. She brandished her hands as if to use her telekinesis on the two Regime's members, when multiple explosions arose around her. Pushing back the detonations, Wanda looked up to see several yellow military planes targeting her, then fired at her with missiles. The young Avenger waved her hands for protection from the missiles, and made them disappear before they hit her. Using her powers, she made the creations of airplanes disappear. Finally, she raised her head to the sky and recognized with rage the one attacking her.
"Sinestro!"she exclaimed with anger and contempt.
The Yellow Lantern gazed at Wanda from the sky with a smirk on her lips.
"Hello again, sweetie! You and your boyfriend shouldn't have come to this dimension! You made a big mistake coming here!"
"You made a big mistake in attacking us!" Wanda replied angrily. "Do you think you scare me with your ridiculous creations? I fought against much worse than you!"
"Your powers might be powerful, little girl. But you cannot defeated the One Earth Government and the Regime!"
"Well, fuck your Regime and your government! If you want to kill me, come down and fight like a man!"
"I'm not a man, sweetie! I'm Korugarian!" he sneered, brandishing his yellow ring which began to sparkle like gold. "And I'm not gonna make it easy for you to face you on the ground. I'll fight you from the sky!"
Wanda smirked defiantly.
"Fine! We'll do things your way!"
And she flew away and joined Sinestro close from him in the sky.
"Unlike you, I don't need a ring to fly!"she asked him sarcastically.
Then the two clashed in the sky, launching energy attacks. Sinestro used his creations to reach the young Avenger, while Wanda pushed them back with her powers and attempted to neutralize the Yellow Lantern, who dodged her attacks.
Batman was still grappling with Catwoman.
"Dammit, Bruce." she exclaimed outraged. "You have any idea what I've... You think I'm here by coincidence? (She approached him pleadingly, resting her hand on her former lover's shoulder.) Let's leave. We can be free of him. Be together."
"There is no « we » anymore." Batman retorted still indifferently.
"Bastard!" Catwoman snapped, withdrawing her hand.
"I have a job to do."
"So do I."
Then she attacked Batman, without wanting to cause him harm. She didn't want to attack him, but she feared she would face retaliation from Superman, if she let Bruce get away from her. The Dark Knight took the opportunity to neutralize her without too much suffering, but the catwoman rebelled and dodged her blows.
While in the sky, Wanda and Sinestro still clashed. The Yellow Lantern had launched all his attacks on the young woman, but she repelled them easily. Every creations he had thrown at her, she had destroyed them all, just with her powers. Sinestro seemed overwhelmed by her. He finally sighed with fatigue, which amused Wanda.
"Then, Korugarian, are you suddenly weakening a little?" she said jovial and amused. "I can do this all day!"
Then with a roar of rage, Sinestro summoned a gigantic hammer that propelled Wanda to the ground. She managed to regain her balance and landed gently on dry land.
"I will destroy you, sweetie!" he roared with a fierce look, brandishing his yellow ring.
Wanda turned around and saw Batman fighting with Catwoman. Then she returned her attention to Sinestro, smirking at him.
"Come get me!" she still cried, jubilant with amusement.
Sinestro howled in rage and dashed to the ground, revealing a giant yellow sword and aimed it at Wanda. Then the young Avenger turned and used her scarlet power. Instantly, Catwoman felt herself lifted into the air by red orbs and rushed through the air towards Sinestro. The two collided and landed on the ground, on a military vehicle. Both were knocked out
Satisfied, Wanda walked quietly over to Sinestro, who was moaning. He tried to extricate himself from the Catwoman who was on top of him, but the young Avenger put her hand on his face and put him to sleep.
"Sleep well, sweetie!" she crooned, as if speaking to a small toddler.
Ever since Sinestro had nearly killed Vision, Wanda swore to kill him. But after what Batman told her about Superman, she changed her mind. If she killed him, she would be no different from the alien tyrant. Covering him with ridicule was a victory for her.
Half-conscious Catwoman glanced at Batman.
"I'm sorry, Bruce," she whispered before passing out.
The Dark Knight just answered him:
"You joined the wrong side, Selina."
Wanda looked at the unconscious cat woman, and turned her head to Batman with a curious gaze.
"Did something happen between you and her?"
Batman just gave a low growl and walked away from her.
"I will take that for a yes," answered Wanda intrigued, wondering what happened between Bruce Wayne and this woman disguised as a cat.
Meanwhile, Green Arrow was fighting Nightwing. The young assassin attacked him with electrifying sticks, while the archer parried his attacks with his bow.
He couldn't believe that Batman's young protege had joined this Earth's Superman side.
He gave his opponent a look of contempt.
"He took you in! Trained you!"
And they both continued their struggles, while Green Arrow continued to speak with anger:
"Sure, he can be an uptight jerk, but... you abandoned him for Superman?"
But Nightwing wasn't at all affected by the archer's reproaches. After a few hits, he managed to push the archer back.
"I'm not Dick Grayson!"roared the rebellious young man.
Nightwing was about to deliver a final blow to Green Arrow until Batman burst in to save him by shielding his attacks with his arm.
"This is Damian Wayne!" he declared, looking at Nightwing with a sinister gaze.
"Wayne?" exclaimed Green Arrow and Wanda at the same time.
Wanda was helping the archer to his feet when she froze when she heard Wayne's name addressed to their young foe.
"His son!" Nightwing muttered, looking at Batman with contempt and hatred. "But Superman's been more of a father than you ever were."
"His son?!" cried Wanda, shocked and upset. "Why did he join Superman's Regime?"
Batman ends up pushing Damian away, glaring angrily at him.
"You stopped being my son when you killed Dick Grayson. He was my son!"
Wanda then watched Batman confront Damian in amazement and sadness. She knew Batman had been through hell for the last five years that followed the Metropolis Incident, but she'd no idea how much he had lost as allies. Batman hadn't just lost friends, he had lost family as well. There she felt a deep empathy for the Dark Knight. She too had lost loved ones. She didn't only have things in common with Superman. She also had some with Batman.
Nightwing hadn't wasted much time trying to fight his former father and mentor. It looks like Damian took the title «Nightwing» from Dick Grayson last year after giving Superman a good impression. Which annoyed Batman even more. He knew he didn't deserve the name «Nightwing» because he had lashed out at him in a fit of rage even though Damian retorted that it was an accident before his biological son changed sides. Unlike Selina, Batman and Damien fought without remorse, but Nightwing fell short of his former father and was easily neutralized.
"You're dead to me!" Batman said grimly to his fallen former son.
While the vigilante of Gotham was in charge of tying up Damian Wayne, Wanda and Green Arrow joined him, once their amazement passed.
"You okay?" the archer asked him.
"I'm so sorry," Wanda whispered, in spite of herself.
Batman looked at them with a neutral air and just replied with indifference:
"Let's get moving."
On the battlefield in front of Stryker, Aquaman's army had no trouble repelling the Regime's soldiers. No matter how much the soldiers fired at the aquatic monsters, nothing slowed them down. Aquaman had home advantage, and won over the Regime army.
Finally, Superman stepped in to confront the King of the Seas, but was knocked back by a giant green hammer skyward. As the Man of Steel was propelled towards the heavens, Wonder Woman grabbed him and wrapped her arms around his neck, preventing him from moving.
"Can we play too?" Green Lantern asked, brandishing his ring which sparkled dazzling green.
Superman threw Wonder Woman as she flew towards Green Lantern and decided to attack them. But he was stopped by a very powerful ray of energy. Strong enough to push Superman aside, as he floated in the sky.
Vision floated through the skies as he approached the Kryptonian with an unfriendly gaze. He had used the Mind Stone to repel his enemy. Superman took the opportunity to scan him with his X-rays. He realized that the thing in front of him in the air wasn't human. He had no idea what it was. Maybe a machine. Could it be an android?
"What are you?"Superman muttered, eyeing Vision curiously.
"Superman… Clark Kent or Kal-El, whatever your name is, your fight is fair, but you're doing it the wrong way," Vision said. "I know you believe what you're doing is right. But for the collective good, you have to give all this up and do the right thing."
But Superman just chuckled, totally indifferent to the synthesoid's words.
"You think you make me change my mind? Who are you to tell me what to do?"
"I am a being who was created to protect life," Vision replied simply, floating close to the Kryptonian. "And I will protect it from you!"
Superman gave a mirthless laugh. Then he gave a look of contempt at his android opponent:
"I don't know who the people who made you are, but they did a very bad work on you! I've protected this world! I saved millions of lives! And it's not an android that comes out of nowhere that's gonna tell me how to save this planet!"
"You aren't saving this planet," Vision objected firmly. "You are just destroying it."
"Shut up!"growled the Man of Steel angrily.
He used his heat vision on the android, but Vision phased, turning transparent, and dodged Superman's attack as he passed through.
The Kryptonian roared and dashed, flying towards the Avenger, but he was faster than him, to dodge his blows.
"I'm gonna kill you!" Superman stormed with terrible fury.
"I've died before. Twice." Vision replied with a smirk.
Superman used his heat vision on the android again, but Vision used the Mind Stone to ward off the Kryptonian's heat attack.
Inside Stryker's facility, Batman, Wanda, and Green Arrow had managed to find the other Batman. Using her telekinetic powers, Wanda lowered the holding cell he was in and opened the cell doors, still with her telekinesis.
They discovered a Batman without his mask and cape, chained to the cell wall. The face of Bruce Wayne was bruised and covered in bruises.
Batman joined his counterpart, with Wanda behind him. Bruce eyed his two saviors apprehensively.
"So you're what all the fuss is about." Bruce told his duplicate.
"I could say the same about you." Batman replied simply.
Then Wanda arrived to undo the other link that was holding Bruce back. The Batman's duplicate looked at the young woman curiously.
"And you are?"
"A friend who comes to your rescue," Wanda replied, releasing him. "I'm one of the Avengers."
"The what?"
Once Bruce was released, he collapsed on top of his two rescuers who supported him by the body.
"He's messed up and barely stands," Wanda commented. "We're gonna have to carry him."
It was then that an arrow failed to hit them, and came to cling to the cell. They turned to see Green Arrow pointing his bow and arrows at his allies, standing, but shaking.
"Arrow, what are you doin'?" Wanda exclaimed, her eyes wide in amazement not understanding why the archer was attacking them.
"Can't… fight it!…" Green Arrow muttered, pointing a new arrow at them and shaking his whole body. "Next one… might not… miss!"
"What's wrong with him?"she wondered in amazement.
"It's not him," Batman said very calmly. "It's Raven. She's using her demonic magic to control him."
"I can handle this," Wanda replied, leaving Bruce with Batman.
Immediately, Green Arrow fired his new arrow, but Wanda pushed it away with her telekinesis. She walked towards him calmly.
"It's okay, Arrow, trust me! It's gonna to be okay!"
She gestured with her fingers, sending out red orbs. Then she took control of the archer's mind, pushing back the evil entity that controlled him. She immobilized Green Arrow and whirled around her.
"Show yourself! If you want to kill us, come fight in person!" she called out defiantly. "I know a lot about mind control. Come on! Go ahead, face me!"
"Be careful, Maximoff," Batman warned, still supporting the bruised Bruce. "Raven is powerful."
"So do I." Wanda replied, not allowing herself to be distracted. "Raven! Come fight me! What's the matter? Are you too scared to face me? Did Superman surround himself with cowards in his Regime?"
A bluish, hazy halo erupted in front of her, and took the form of a giant crow. Then the giant raven changed into a multitude of crows which came rushing towards Wanda like a swarm of bees. The young Avenger raised her hands and used her powers to repel the demonic birds and make them disappear.
"Is that all you got?" Wanda exclaimed sarcastically. "No kidding! Crows?"
Then finally, Raven appeared in her true form and faced Wanda with a sinister gaze.
"Who are you? A witch? I'm gonna enjoy watching you die, little girl!"she sneered.
"You're welcome to try, witch!" Wanda replied firmly, brandishing her fists, ready to strike back at the demonic young woman.
"I'm much more than a witch, you little fool!"
And both of them swayed energy orbs. Wanda threw her red orbs at Raven, but the dark witch dodged them with her own demonic orbs. Neither of them managed to touch one or the other. Both could dodge each other's attacks.
"Well, you impress me, but you will not stop me!"Raven said with an evil smile.
Raven was so focused on Wanda, that she didn't notice the two Batmans behind her, who hit her by surprise, knocking her out. Once knocked out his demonic creations disappeared.
Immediately, Wanda returned to the archer, finally freed from all evil grasp. She helped him up.
"You all right?"she asked him.
"Yup, thank you Red, I owe you one," Green Arrow replied with a jovial smile. "Uh... Don't tell the others about this, huh?"
"Pinky swear," Wanda assured him with a relieved smile.
Bruce, injured, tried to stand up, but due to his injuries he was unable to stay upright. Wanda and Green Arrow came running up, supporting him by the body.
"Easy there, tough guy." said the archer, taking the arm of the wounded hero on his shoulder.
Then Wanda supported him on the other side, taking his arm over her shoulder.
"Can you walk?" Batman asked him.
As they tried to leave the compound supporting the injured Bruce, there was an earthquake that shook the entire facility. Then Hal Jordan in Yellow Lantern fell a few yards from them. Wanda wanted to attack him, but Batman stop her.
"Get him outside, both of you!" he ordered, facing Hal.
Wanda insisted firmly:
"Batman, I might to help you…"
"Do as I say! You and Green Arrow just go! It's an order! (Turning to Wanda.) You promised to do what I say and without question!"
Reluctantly, Wanda eventually nods and helps the injured Bruce walk with the help of Green Arrow. While Batman then placed himself in front of the Yellow Lantern, ready to face him.
"Well look what I found."Hal exclaimed when he saw the Dark Knight walking towards him. "Time to end the Insurgency."
Despite being stunned after collapsing, the Yellow Lantern managed to gain some advantage since Batman was just a normal human being, but the leader of the Insurgency was unafraid of his tactics as he rushed over to Hal. and temporarily knocked him out with his knockout gloves giving the enemy no time to react.
"Superman is the enemy, Hal. Not me." Batman retorted to his unconscious enemy, before going to find his double with Wanda and Green Arrow.
Outside the compound, during the battlefield, Superman fought Vision and Wonder Woman. The Avengers' android attacked him with the beams emitted from the Mind Stone, but the Man of Steel dodged his attacks and used his superblast, pushing Vision back into the clouds. He grabbed Wonder Woman by the neck and began to strangle her. The Amazon Princess struggled, Superman had a very strong hold on her. She started to lose her breath, until Aquaman used his trident to save her while Green Lantern caught her using his powers. An enraged Superman attacked Aquaman as they both held the Sea King's trident. Although Superman crushed Aquaman in a nearby Regime's truck, the Aquatic King managed to dismiss him and hit him taking advantage that he was down. But that didn't last long as he was knocked back with a punch and decided to return the favor by throwing his trident at him. But Green Lantern stopped him by creating a green cage around him. This disarmed him but he managed to free himself from it. Soon Superman chased Green Lantern into the sky and caught up with him. He was about to break his back but he noticed Green Arrow, a red-haired girl and the two Batmans below who were escaping from Stryker. He understood then: the League's attack was a diversion to allow Batman to free his duplicate. He freed Hal and flew to the ground towards his enemies.
Both Batman, Wanda and Green Arrow reached the edge of a precipice. Normally, they had to disappear by teleportation. But nothing happened.
"Uh… isn't this the part where we disappear?" Green Arrow asked, still holding Bruce by the shoulder.
At the Watchtower, Cyborg noted with dismay that the control screen read: Target Lock Failed. The teleporter had a malfunction related to the reactor that would soon explode.
"Damn!" he yelled in panic.
"Something's wrong!" Wanda exclaimed in alarm. (She addressed herself via communication.) "Wanda to Cyborg, it's time to withdraw now! Cyborg, get us out of here!"
"On it!" Cyborg's voice answered her.
The heroes move away from the ravine but Superman blocked their way by floating above them. Wanda was shocked when she saw the Man of Steel himself, floating a few feet away from them. She had heard terrible information about him, but seeing him himself was a further shock. Superman stared at them with indescribable rage and hatred. The young Avenger guessed that she must have looked the same face when she faced Thanos in the ruins of the Avengers' compound.
"You thought you could fool me, Bruce? Like he did?" called the Man of Steel at the leader of the Insurgency.
Wanda looked around for some way out. But only the teleporter could get them out of there. Of course, she could fly away and take the three heroes with her. But it was a big risk. Superman was as fast as a missile launched from a military plane. He would catch up with them without problems. Wanda might have had a chance to face him in the air, but not at the same time as having to telekinize three heroes. If she had to be distracted, and then it was the downfall for both Batman and Green Arrow. Too big a risk.
The heroes retreated towards the ravine, as Batman gave Superman a neutral gaze, who was still hovering above them.
"This isn't about Joker. It's about you." he said to the Kryptonian.
"I perfected this world!" Superman resumed fiercely. "So many lives lost because I held back. When I should've used all my power!"
"He's really crazy!" Wanda whispered in shock to the archer.
Discreetly, she raised her hands, sending out red orbs, ready to launch them at the almighty alien.
Batman then continued to dialogue with the one who was once his friend:
"For what? To control? To oppress?"
"I could've prevented Metropolis! Saved my family!" Superman resumed angrily.
"Crime took my family too, Clark." the Dark Knight replied calmly.
Superman's eyes began to glow a bright red. Wanda prepared to retaliate with her powers.
"But you weren't the gun," Superman said, preparing his heat vision.
Superman shot his heat vision from his eyes on the four heroes. Wanda immediately ran in front of the three men, created a reddish energy barrier, and managed to intercept the Kryptonian's heat vision. Wanda focused her power on blocking the Man of Steel's attack. Unfortunately, Superman didn't stop: his heat vision burst from his eyes in a continuous stream, more and more powerful, beyond what Wanda could endure. She was struggling to maintain her red energy barrier, Superman's attack was getting stronger and stronger, and she started to falter.
"I… I won't last long! He's very strong!" Wanda yelled, as she did everything to maintain the barrier blocking Superman's heat vision.
"Hang on, Red!"Green Arrow yelled, distraught and helpless not able to do anything to help.
"Focus, Maximoff!" Batman yelled. "Come on! Don't let go! Focus!"
"I WON'T HOLD!"Wanda yelled starting to weaken. "CYBORG! HURRY UP!"
The young Avenger began to wear herself out from the colossal effort to ward off the Kryptonian's heat vision.
With a cheerful smirk, Superman continued to shoot his heat vision on Wanda's energy barrier, seeing that the young woman would soon tire herself and make her bulwark of energy disappear.
"Brave little girl! But you won't be able to resist me for long!" he sneered.
Wanda used her hands to keep her hold on her barrier, but with Superman's continued attack, she wasn't going to be able to stay on forever. She finally screamed in pain.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!"
Further up in the sky, Vision was fighting Hawkgirl. He managed to push the winged woman back with the Mind Stone, when a loud howl of pain was heard. He turned his head towards the Stryker building. He looked at the edge of a ravine, and saw his beloved struggling to protect both Batman and Green Arrow from Superman's powerful attack.
"Wanda!"
Immediately he headed straight for the island.
Superman reveled in seeing Wanda soon wear out from the continued onslaught of her thermal vision. The young Avenger continued to scream in pain, despite her efforts to maintain her energy barrier.
"We must do something!" Green Arrow exclaimed horrified to be forced to watch the young woman weaken in front of Superman. "She can't handle this!"
"Cyborg must to evacuate us," Batman replied, furious that he couldn't do anything to help her.
"Your Cyborg? Or mine?" Bruce asked.
As the energy barrier began to disintegrate, Superman continued his attack with his eyes flashing red. Then Vision rushed out like a cannonball and hit Superman, throwing him against the concrete wall of the building.
The energy barrier disappeared. Wanda, exhausted from the effort, collapsed to the ground. Vision caught up with her in time by the body.
"I got you!"
"Vis?" Wanda whispered tired, her eyes barely open.
It was time for our heroes to disappear.
"Now!" Batman yelled.
Then, both Batman and Green Arrow fell into the void of the ravine. Vision grabbed Wanda and left to join the heroes in the void off the cliff.
Superman stood up and came to the edge of the ravine, floating in the air. He was going to pursue the heroes who fell… and who disappeared by teleportation. Even Vision, still holding Wanda in his arms, also disappeared.
Superman was stunned, before realizing:
"The Watchtower!"
He decided to fly into space to find his enemies but before his arrival, the huge satellite exploded in the starry black of space, as the Steel Tyrant was knocked back by the impact of the blast. As he regained consciousness, he realized that the Watchtower was gone. All that stayed were ruins, floating in the great starry black void. Just then he heard a voice from Earth with his super hearing.
"Superman! Your time is over!"
The Man of Steel turned to Earth from space, in confusion, before recognizing the voice, although it was distorted. It was Lex Luthor's voice.
