Makoto and Kyoko were sitting on a bench outside the hospital as they waited for Fuhito to come and pick them up. The pair hadn't spoken to each other since they had learned they were going to have triplets.
Makoto was filled with guilt that he had made Kyoko's life much worse. He had pretty much destroyed it. He began to have that niggle in the back of his head that it would have been better if he never went to Hope's Peak in the first place.
Meanwhile, Kyoko was still trying to figure out how they would get out of this mess. She and Makoto needed money fast, but who would hire two barely adults with no work experiences? Then there was the housing problem. The housing agency would never grant the pair a house.
Fuhito rolled up, and he saw the despair in the young couple's faces. Makoto and Kyoko got into the car and didn't say anything.
"What's wrong?" Fuhito said as he looked over his shoulder to face Kyoko. "Is the baby ok?"
Kyoko didn't reply at first as she let out a massive sigh. "The babies are fine."
"Babies?" Fuhito replied as he raised an eyebrow. "Are you expecting twins?"
"No, one better, triplets."
Fuhito was stunned he didn't know how to reply, so he drove away.
"Naegi," Kyoko said, looking at him.
"Yeah?" Makoto said quietly as he looked at her.
"Are you still committed to having the children?"
"Yeah," Makoto nodded. "I want to keep them still even though it would be in our best interest to give the children to an adoption centre. Do you still want to keep the children?"
"Yes," Kyoko replied. "I needed to ask because it was a big bombshell that just landed on us."
Makoto put his head down. "I will never abandon you or the children. I know things look like crap, and we are both in big trouble. But I will never leave your side Kirigiri. I need time to think and find the courage to phone the folk."
"I can be at your side if you want?"
"No," Makoto said, shaking his head. "I will tell them alone. The last thing I need is for you to listen to my mother rant or being overbearing."
"Kyoko," Fuhito said. "You will need to tell your father straight away."
"I was planning on telling him when I got back," Kyoko replied. "I hope he takes the news well."
30 minutes later
The trio had arrived back at the school. Makoto quickly said his goodbyes and got out of the car, and headed to his dorm room.
"Will he be alright?" Fuhito asked.
"I'm not sure," Kyoko answered. "I will speak to him tomorrow. I think Naegi needs a goodnight sleep."
"Hmm, by the way. When are you two going to drop the second names?"
"What do you mean?" Kyoko asked, staring at Fuhito.
"Well, you two are in a relationship, and both of you are going to become parents to three children. I find it out how you two are still on second name terms."
"To be truthful, I haven't thought about it. I don't have Naegi has nither."
"Ah, truth," Fuhito said. "There is something I want to know."
"Regarding what?" Kyoko asked.
"How you two ended up having sex?. You are much smarter than that, Kyoko. You wouldn't allow yourself to hop into a man's bed without protection because you know the risks. So I want to know the truth. What happened?"
"If I talk, then you must NEVER tell my father!"
"Deal, go on then."
"Naegi and I got drunk at his 18th birthday party, and that's how we ended up in this mess. We were both peer pressured into having one drink, and then after, we couldn't stop."
Fuhito shook his head. "Today's generation is so uncivilised." He got out of the car.
Kyoko was slightly annoyed at Fuhito's remark, but she knew that she had more concerning things to be more worried about.
Kyoko got out of the car. She and Fuhito headed into the school building and headed up to the Headmaster's office.
"Remember we made a deal," Kyoko said, looking at Fuhito.
"My lips are sealed," Fuhito replied.
Kyoko knocked on the door and opened it. She and Fuhito walked into the office to see Jin on the phone.
"Sorry, can I call you back," Jin said when he saw his father and daughter, "Something important had grabbed my attention, goodbye." Jin put down the phone, and he smiled at Kyoko. "So, how is the baby?"
"The babies are fine, father," Kyoko said, closing her eyes.
"Babies?" Jin replied, surprised. "Wait, are you expecting twins?"
"Triplets," Fuhito said.
"T-Triplets?" Jin said, stunned, but a small smiled appeared on his face. "I'm going be a grandfather to three babies. Oh, I can't wait!"
Kyoko opened her eyes to see Jin being overjoyed with the news. It made her happy. But she knew this wasn't the time to be happy.
"Father," Kyoko said. "We have a massive problem now. Naegi and I only accounted to only having one child. Not three."
Jin's smile faded. "What are you and Naegi going to do? Is he still committed to you?"
"Yes, don't worry about that. Naegi said he would never leave my side. But, we can't afford three children, and we don't have a house."
"Hmm, I don't think. I can help you right now, Kyoko. I don't have a plan to help you two out."
"I'm fresh out of ideas as well," Fuhito said.
"Father, grandfather, I don't need your help. Naegi and I said we would find a way of this mess together."
Jin gave Kyoko a concerning look. "Yes, that was before the ultrasound. But having three children is a big challenge."
"I'm well aware," Kyoko said. "We will find a way."
"Come on, Kyoko, be real," Jin replied. "Both of you don't have jobs, no house. Why are you saying that you two will find a way?"
"Oh, I'm so sorry, father!" She snapped. "I'm only trying to stay POSITIVE! Because that is the only thing I can do RIGHT NOW!"
Jin and Fuhito were both surprised by Kyoko's outburst of anger.
Kyoko shook her head and quickly turned around and walked out of the office.
"Kyoko wait!" Jin said standing up.
"Jin, stop," Fuhito sighed. "Leave her. Kyoko needs time alone."
Jin slumped back into his seat. "Dad, how the hell am I going to help her?"
"Unless you have a million yen that you aren't using, I don't think you can help her," Fuhito replied.
Hours later
Makoto was sitting on his bed with his phone in his hand and had been sitting there for 10 minutes. He didn't dare to phone his parents.
But Makoto knew it had to be done. His parents, along with Komaru, deserve to know the truth. Makoto held his breath as he phoned his mother.
"Hello Makoto, how was the ultrasound? Is the baby alright?" Mrs Naegi said.
"Mum… Are father and Komaru there?"
"Your father is here. Komaru is upstarts. Are you ok, Makoto?"
"Get Komaru, then I will talk," Makoto sighed.
Makoto could hear his mum shouting Komaru, then a few seconds later, he could hear Komaru talking.
"That's Komaru here. Now tell me did everything go ok?"
"Yeah, everything went ok, I guess," Makoto said emotionless.
"What is up with that tone, Makoto? Did you and Kirigiri fight?"
"No… During the ultrasound, there were three heartbeats."
"Three heartbeats…"
Makoto heard a bang and then heard the phone land on the carpet.
"MUM!" Komaru shouted.
"What's going on?" Makoto said, alarmed.
"Komaru, help me get your mother on the sofa," Mr Naegi said.
"Hey, what is going on?" Makoto asked with concern in his voice.
"Mum fainted and fell on the floor!" Komaru shouted loud enough for Makoto to hear. "We will call you back, end the call."
Makoto ended the call, and he fell back onto his bed. "Mum is going to kill me."
