The kids were up and dressed by the time Danny and Linda got up the following morning. Jack and Sean had moved the luggage downstairs and Millie was attempting to make yogurt parfaits for breakfast.
"Good morning!" Sean beamed as his parents made their way into the kitchen.
"Hey," Linda yawned. "How long have you guys been up?"
"Not too long. Millie made breakfast."
"You did?"
"Granola, yogurt, blueberries, and a dash of honey."
"Dash or glob?" Danny chuckled.
"A little more than a dash."
Linda put on a pot of coffee before sitting down as Millie placed the bowls of her breakfast concoction at each place setting. "Millie, this is fantastic. Thank you!"
"You're welcome."
"Alright," Danny started, "let's go over the rules for the roadtrip." The kids all looked up in his direction. "Number one. Do not under any circumstances go off on your own. You three stay with Uncle Jamie or Eddie at all times."
"What about Nicki?"
"Nicki has to stay with them too. Number two. No fighting, be respectful, and use your manners. Uncle Jamie and Eddie are taking you guys out of the goodness of their hearts, so don't cause them any trouble. Copy?"
"Copy," the kids all answered as they heard a knock at the door.
"Hey! Anybody home?" Jamie yelled as he came in.
"Kitchen!" Danny yelled back.
"Hey! Are we ready for a few days of fun in the city of Brotherly Love?"
"What about sisters?" Millie asked.
"Sisterly love too," Jamie smiled.
"We're ready!" they all agreed.
"Well, finish up breakfast while I load the car and my brother finishes reading you the riot act. We've got two more girls to pick up on the way to even things out."
"How did you know?" Jack asked.
"You guys have lived with him for what… less than fifteen years. I've known him my whole life." Jamie grabbed their bags and headed out the door. Once he had the car loaded, he made his way back inside. Linda had a thermos full of coffee waiting on him and an envelope full of cash and tickets.
"There's plenty of mad money in here along with printouts of tickets for all of the museums."
"Got it," Jamie said as he placed the envelope in the inside pocket of his jacket. "Are we ready to roll?"
The kids jumped up and put their dishes in the sink and ran to get their coats, hats, gloves, and scarves. Linda and Danny got up and walked them all to the door.
"Take care of each other," Linda instructed as she gave them all a hug and a kiss on the cheek. "Call and check in every night."
"We will."
"You got Atticus?" Danny asked as he squatted down in front of Millie.
"Mr. Uncle Jamie, did you put him in the car?"
"I did."
"Got him."
"Ok. Remember what we talked about. Be good, have tons of fun and, we'll see you in four days."
Millie wrapped her arms around Danny's neck. "Love you, Daddy."
"Love you too." The kids all headed to the car as Danny and Jamie pounded knuckles. "Take care of my kids, Little Brother."
"You got it, Danny."
The Reagan/Janko/Boyle crew made it to Philadelphia by lunchtime. They checked into the B&B and went to find some lunch before heading to Independence Hall. The tour guides did a great job of telling the history of Independence Hall and then Jamie picked up and regaled them in a few more stories. They even sang a few songs from the movie/musical 1776 before moving on to the Liberty Bell.
"Can we ring it?" Sean asked with a devilish smile on his face.
"Only if you want to end up in the Liberty Bell Jail," Eddie chuckled as she put both hands on Sean's shoulders and started pushing him toward the parking lot.
"Hang on," Nicki said. "Let's take a picture first." They all posed for a selfie in front of the Bell before heading back to the car.
"Where are we going now?" Millie yawned.
"Well, I thought we'd go grab dinner and head back to the B&B. It's getting late and I don't know about you guys, but I'm exhausted."
Danny and Linda called just before the kids got ready for bed. Jack and Sean told them every detail of what they'd seen and done and eaten.
"What about you, Mil Mil? Are you having fun?" Linda asked.
"I wish you were here."
"Me too, but we have to work. I'm sure you're going to have even more fun tomorrow than you had today."
"Yeah…"
"I bet you're all tired," Linda smiled. "Go hop in bed and you'll feel better in the morning."
"Ok."
"How are we sleeping?" Eddie asked. They had two adjoining rooms and three beds.
"I'm sleeping with Nicki," Millie mumbled as curled up on one side of the bed and slowly drifted off to sleep.
"I'm with Jack," Sean said as he crash landed on their bed and turned on the television.
Jack grabbed the remote control and quickly turned the volume down a few notches. "Dude, Mil's almost asleep."
"So you and Eddie are across the hall," Nicki pointed. "We'll see you in the morning."
Jamie smiled at Eddie. "So, it's you and me over there, I guess."
"Shouldn't one of us be in here with the kids?"
"Well I don't really want to sleep on the floor, do you? Nic, can you make sure no one leaves this room and come get us if anyone needs anything?"
"You got it, Uncle Jamie."
"Come on, we're literally four feet away from the door. They'll be fine."
"If you need us," Eddie said, "we'll be right over here."
"We're good," Jack assured her.
"Oh, this place is so romantic," Eddie gushed as she and Jamie walked into their room for the night. "We'll have to come back here sometime."
Jamie had a wry smile as he leaned in for a kiss.
"Forget it, Regan," Eddie shot him down. "No way you're getting lucky tonight."
"What? Why?"
"I'm not having sex with you next door to your nieces and nephews. No way."
"It's not like they are in the room with us."
"Um no. What would the Commissioner think?"
"Well I really didn't plan on telling him… just like I didn't plan on telling him about that time on the train coming back from Virginia or any time at my apartment, or your apartment, or in that tent when we went camping at Niagra, or that Hotel at Kristin Cartwrite's wedding, or in the back of the Jeep when we were at Coney Island…" Eddie blushed as she rolled her eyes. "Are you really telling me after we have our four kids, we never get to fool around again?"
"Four?"
"Didn't you say you wanted four…" Jamie walked up and wrapped his arms around her waist as he leaned in for a kiss.
"Hmmmm….. Four with you? I could handle that." She kissed him then put her index finger on his lips. "You got me Reagan. But here's the deal, you have to be quiet."
"Me?"
"Uh yeah. None of your incessant giggling. I don't want to scar those kids for life."
"Fair," Jamie chuckled as he pulled her down onto the bed with him.
"What are the odds Eddie and Jamie went up there with four kids and they come back with five?" Erin asked Jack as they lay in bed after having enjoyed a very romantic evening. He'd come back in town for the week and while he missed Nicki, he was delighted to have some alone time with Erin.
"What do you mean? Are those two getting serious?"
"Oh, they are way past that. Why do you think I got them a separate room from the kids? I'm ready for another niece or nephew."
"Well from my recollection, they better be walking down an aisle first."
"True."
The following morning, the kids were up before Jamie and Eddie. It was only after exploring what the B&B had for breakfast that they all decided to go wake their uncle.
"Uncle Jamie! Eddie!" they sweetly crooned as they knocked on the door.
"Kids are up," Eddie mumbled as she elbowed Jamie. "Go answer the door."
"Huh? It's too early."
Eddie squinted as she looked at her watch. "It's 7:30am. Get up and open the door. But put some clothes on first." Eddie sat up and pulled her hair into a sloppy bun as Jamie rustled around for his pajama pants and a tshirt.
"Good Morning," he smiled as the kids all barreled into the room and jumped in bed with Eddie. "Did you guys sleep well?"
"We did. And we've already checked out breakfast. It's amazing!" Sean said excitedly. "There's breakfast casserole, and biscuits, and chocolate gravy, and waffles, and fruit…"
"Oh my goodness. I guess I am pretty hungry," Eddie smiled. "Can we eat in our pajamas or should we all get dressed first?"
"I vote jammies," Millie grinned as she snuggled next to Eddie.
"Well, I vote we get dressed and then as soon as we eat, we can hit the road," Jack said. "All in favor?"
"That does sound like a good plan," Jamie agreed. "Nic, what's on the agenda today?"
"Constitution Center, Betsy Ross House, Congress Hall, and the Powel House."
"Ok. Let's get to it. Sounds like we have a full day."
After indulging in a wonderful breakfast, Jamie, Eddie and the kids bundled up and headed out. "Do we all have coats, hats, gloves, and scarves?" Eddie asked as they climbed into the car.
"Yep!"
"Everybody buckled?" Jamie asked, as he cranked the engine.
"Yep!" came the same replies.
"Alright. Let's roll."
"Hey Babe," Danny smiled as he answered his phone later that afternoon.
"Hey. Do you still want to meet or do you just want me to pick us up some dinner on the way home?"
"Well, we can meet… or you can pick up some food and I can go draw a bath…"
"I've been on my feet all day and I don't feel like this pair of scrubs is exactly sexy enough for a night out…"
"Option two it is," Danny smiled. "I'm headed out now. I'll go chill the wine, light some candles, and have a bath ready for you when you get home if you'll pick up the takeout."
"Perfect. See you in a bit."
It wasn't much longer until Danny and Linda were both sitting in a steaming bath surrounded by candlelight and each had a glass of wine in their hand. "Did you talk to the kids today?" Danny asked.
"Not yet. I think Nicki had planned a pretty full day."
"So, no news is good news?"
"That's what I'm hoping. Jamie didn't text?"
"Nope."
"Should we call…"
"Nope."
Linda smiled as she sat down her wine glass and turned to kiss Danny.
"We're buying Jamie whatever he wants for Christmas…"
Back in Philadelphia, Jamie, Eddie, and the kids had just returned to the B&B from an exhausting day. They all agreed that they would be sleeping in the following morning. Millie took a shower and curled up beside Jamie while she waited on Eddie to say goodnight.
"So, what's been your favorite part of the trip?" Jamie asked.
"I liked when we sang at Independence Hall… and the statues at the Constitution place… and this part." Jamie chuckled as he kissed the top of her head. "What about you?"
"I'm with you, Cricket. I enjoyed all the history stuff, but spending time with you and Nicki, and Jack, and Sean…"
"And Ms. Officer Eddie…" Millie interrupted.
"And Ms. Officer Eddie was the absolute best part of the whole trip."
"What are we doing tomorrow?"
"Oooh tomorrow is a little less history, a little more Philly. We're going to run the Rocky stairs, eat Philly Cheesesteaks, see the Fresh Prince Basketball Court, and hit up some of the more obscure places in town. It should be fun."
"What's obscure mean?"
"Quirky… funny… weird."
"Ah. Like cool?"
"Yep. Cool."
"Can we go get a brownie sandwich?"
"What's that?"
"Jackers found it on his phone."
Jamie grabbed his phone as Millie curled up in the crook of his arm. "Look for brownie sandwich in Philadelphia." Jamie typed what Millie said into the search and began to read the ingredients to Millie. "Doesn't that sound yummy?"
"Yes it does… so does this cinnamon sticky bun." For the next ten minutes Jamie read the description of all of the different desserts at Lawrence's Bakery."
"Hey," Eddie smiled as she walked out of the bathroom in her bathrobe, rubbing her hair with a towel. "Are you keeping Uncle Jamie company for me?"
"We're making plans for tomorrow," Jamie told her.
"Ah. What's the plan, Mil?"
"Whoopie Pies, Brownie Sandwiches, Cinnamon Sticky Buns…"
Eddie died out laughing. "We're going to eat all day?"
"Oh, there's other stuff too. We're going to run up the steps like Rocky, go to the basketball court, and visit some obscure places."
"Obscure?" Eddie asked, looking at Jamie.
"It means cool," Millie clarified as Jamie smiled.
"Alright, Cricket. Time for bed." Millie turned and gave Jamie a hug as he kissed the side of her head. "Want me to walk over with you?"
"Nah. I got this."
"Come on," Eddie said, reaching out for Millie's hand. "I know you got this, but I want to say goodnight to everybody else."
Millie smiled. "Ok."
Jamie sat in the bed and watched as Eddie walked out with his niece. As if he wasn't already certain, that sealed the deal for him. He saw his future with Eddie in that moment. He was still smiling when Eddie walked back in.
"They good in there?"
"Oh they're fine. The boys were watching Jurassic World and Nicki was painting her nails. She promised Millie she would do hers next… What?"
"What – what?"
"You're smiling like you just scored the last cookie in the jar."
"I just love you. You know that?"
"I had an idea," Eddie grinned as she took off her robe and crashed down beside him. "So tomorrow…"
"I've been looking at the most obscure places to visit in Philly. Trust me. It's going to be fun."
"Or cool according to Millie."
She climbed on top of him and began to kiss him. "Definitely cool."
Back in Staten Island, Danny and Linda were starting to miss their brood. "Hey Babe, I have a crazy idea."
"What's that?" Linda asked as she sat in bed, rubbing lotion onto her hands.
"Well, since we're off tomorrow, how about we call Erin and see if she wants to surprise the kids in Philly tomorrow for their last day?"
"You want to drive to Philadelphia in the morning?"
"Why not? As Millie said, it's only an hour away."
"You're missing our babies aren't you?"
"No. It's not that. I just thought we could take a day trip…"
"Uh huh."
"Come on, let's just call Erin and see if she and Jack want to go with us…"
"Jack?"
"He's in town. I'm 1000% sure he's over there right now."
"How in the world do you…"
"I'm a detective," Danny mumbled as he picked up his cell phone and started dialing. "Hey Sis. What are you and Jack up to tonight?"
"Excuse me?"
"Jack? The moron that's about 6'5" and probably laying beside you right now."
"What do you want, Danny?"
"Linda wants to surprise the kids tomorrow," he began as Linda slugged him in the shoulder. "Want to ride to Philly?"
"Sure. Why not. When and where are we meeting?"
"You can ride with us unless you plan on bringing along a friend…"
"Danny!"
"We'll meet you at the Museum of Art at 10am. According to Nicki's itinerary, that's when they should be there. I figure we can surprise them at the top of the stairs."
"Sounds like a plan. We'll see you then."
"Hey, call Dad and invite him."
"It's too late."
"Well, call him in the morning."
Danny was up bright and early the next morning. He and Linda got dressed and called Frank to see if he and Henry were going to join them. Having managed to get off work, Frank had agreed to join and he and Henry were already on their way to Staten Island to pick them up.
"Erin is meeting us there," Frank said. "Apparently Jack's going to join us."
"Sounds good. See you in a bit."
Jamie, Eddie, and the kids all slept in, finally rolling out of bed just after 8:30am. They meandered down to the kitchen and had yet another delicious breakfast before heading out for the morning. "So, who's going to reach the top first?" Eddie asked as she turned and looked at the kids sitting in the back?"
"Not me," Nicki chuckled.
"Ugh. I ate too many pancakes," Sean groaned.
"So, it's Cricket or Jack…" Jamie looked in the rearview mirror to the back. Place your bets people."
"Sorry Mil," Sean said, "but Jack can cover three steps by the time you take one. I think he's got you on this."
"Well, Jack's legs are longer," Nicki pointed out… "but Millie's quicker on her feet. I'm sticking with girl power. Go Mil!"
Millie and Jack just smiled at one another. "How about you, Uncle Jamie? You're running too, right?"
"Well, I guess I could."
"In that case, my money's on you," Millie giggled.
Danny, Linda, Henry, and Frank arrived at the Museum of Art shortly before 10am. Linda had been tracking Jack's phone and knew they were about fifteen minutes away, giving them plenty of time to find Jack and Erin, who had already been through the Museum and were waiting on the top of the stairs. After exchanging pleasantries, they anxiously awaited the arrival of their brood at the top of the stairs. It didn't take Danny and Frank long to spot them when they pulled up.
"They look happy," Danny smiled.
"Well don't look so sad about it," Henry laughed.
"I just thought they could miss me a little bit."
"On your marks," Eddie said as they all braced themselves, "get set, GO!"
With that, all six took off in a dead sprint. Of course, Jamie and Jack left the rest of the pack in their dust. Millie and Sean were next… and Nicki and Eddie took their own sweet time.
The Reagan/Boyle clan started cheering them on as they began to near the top. The kids faces lit up when they saw their tribe at the top of the stairs yelling and clapping. "You're here!" Millie shouted as she ran straight into Danny's arms.
"What are you guys doing here?" Jamie asked, slightly winded, but not nearly as out of breath as the rest of the crew.
"We thought we'd surprise you. Mind if we join you for a day of sightseeing?"
"Sounds great."
"When did you get here?" Nicki asked as she hugged Jack and Erin and then made her way over to Henry and Frank.
"Not long ago. We missed you guys. Have you had fun?"
"We've had a blast!" the kids all agreed. Their fun continued as they explored the city together. The adults were thrilled to see the kids having such a great time. They all enjoyed each other's company and as promised, Millie got her brownie sandwich. They finally arrived back at the B&B around 9:30pm. The kids were all wiped out. Millie was sound asleep when Danny picked her up and carried her inside.
"What time are we leaving in the morning?" Linda asked, knowing she'd have to help the kids pack all of their stuff.
"Breakfast starts at 8:00am, but I say we don't wake these guys any earlier than we have to," Jamie answered. "We've been going non-stop."
"Sounds good."
Danny and Henry were absolutely blown away by breakfast the following morning. They loved each and everything dish that they tried. The kids giggled as they introduced them to all of their favorites. After four wonderful days, it was time to return to the Reagan/Boyle kids to return to New York and as expected, they slept all the way home. They were equal parts happy and exhausted.
"Hey," Jamie smiled at Eddie once they were finally alone, "I can't thank you enough for going with me on this crazy adventure."
"It was fun. Those kids are great."
"They love you. I don't think they would've hung out with me solo for four days."
"Uh, yeah they would. Those kids worship you."
"Either way. I'm glad you were there."
"Me too."
