Chapter 8

*I'm excited to finish up another chapter within a week! I'm so proud of myself! Let me know what you guys think of the story so far! Every day I'm getting more ideas!*

Maka turned off the water and Soul took that as his cue to give his meister her privacy.

"I'll let you get dressed" Soul slipped out of the steamy bathroom into once glorious suite, now littered with broken dry wall. He scoured the room smashing all the small hidden cameras he found, not that it made him feel any less anxious.

'This is going to be a long night. Not cool.' Soul sat on the edge of the bed, allowing himself to fall back. The feeling of being watched looming over him, tugged at his frustration and even his madness. Soul shot up from the bed and paced over towards the window and peered out the curtains taking in the view of the city, the laughing moon almost seemed to be mocking Soul.

"Damn it, that's it we are leaving tonight."

*Back in the bathroom*

Maka turned off the water and not a moment later she heard her weapon grace her with privacy. Before she could respond the door had already shut. Maka dried herself off and got dressed in her classic look.

'I should report in to Lord Death' Maka looked at the fogged mirror and began writing out the sequence of numbers her and every other DWMA student knew by soul.

'42-42-564 whenever you want to knock on Death's door.'

"Hiya! Hello! What's up? Good to see ya!" Lord Death chimed from the mirror.

"Hello Lord Death, this is Scythe meister Maka reporting in. We have successfully collected three souls on our mission." Maka answered professional as always.

"Well congratulations on a job well done!"

"Lord Death, Joji had all of Soul's information. He said he was working for someone." Maka explained Joji's final words, doing her best to try and mask her worry from the reaper.

"Hmmm, interesting indeed. First thing's first let's get you two back home. I would like you to report to the Death Room as soon as you're settled back in. For now, toodaloo!" Lord Death sounded so carefree it gave Maka a sense of relief.

"No problem, we will see you soon!" The mirror reverted back to showing the reflection of the meister. Maka opened the bathroom door to see her weapon partner aggressively packing the rest of their things.

"What's going on?" Maka asked as her nerves began to stir.

"I can't shake the feeling of being watched. Those cameras were definitely not cool. Plus I really miss my bed, so we are leaving tonight."

Maka had no argument and quickly started helping Soul and that same night they were finally on their way back home to the comfort of their own apartment.

*Streets of Death City*

Maka and Soul walked down the familiar roads of their hometown both of them relieved to be home. Soul could tell his meister was exhausted from the trip.

"Almost home, meis—" Soul trailed off and his attention was immediately drawn to a dark figure he saw darting in an alley behind them.

"What is it, Soul?"

'She must be exhausted if she couldn't pick up a soul this close to us.' Soul's thoughts raced, maybe he didn't really see anything. He was pretty exhausted himself.

"Nothing just stumbled, guess I'm pretty beat." Soul played off his reaction and decided to keep it to himself for now. He didn't want to get his meister riled up over something he wasn't even sure he saw. Still, the thought of someone following them haunted Soul.

'Almost home.'

*Maka/Soul's Apartment*

The meister and weapon duo finally made it into their apartment and immediately dropped all of their luggage in the living room. They both started dragging themselves towards their rooms when their needy feline came bursting from Maka's room.

"Maka! Souly!" Blair jumped and transformed into her human form and pulled the pair into her chest with an embrace. Soul, as usual, had a slight nosebleed. No matter how tired he may be Blair was always too much for him.

"We missed you too Blair but right now I'm really missing my bed." Maka greeted sleepily, slowly slipping from Blair's grasp. With a yawn Maka told the two goodnight and went to bed.

"Blair, Do me a favor will ya? Stay with Maka tonight." Soul mentioned as he turned to move the luggage from the middle of the living room.

"Well sure, but why is there something wrong?"

"I just have a bad feeling. I'm sure there isn't anything to worry about but you can't be too careful."

With a short look of confusion on her face the magical cat transformed back into her feline self and scurried into Maka's room. Once Blair was out of sight, Soul turned and approached the front door and peered through the peep hole. He was still haunted by the feeling they were being watched. His body at war with exhaustion and worry, Soul decided he would just peek out the door and down the hall. Their apartment was on the fifth floor so the front door was really the only way anyone could get in. Soul ripped open the front door and looked both ways in the dim hallway but once again saw nothing. Soul shut the front door and locked it and with a slight bit of ease on his soul he finally disappeared into his own bedroom and collapsed on his bed.

"Oh how I've missed you so much." Soul mumbled to himself. His bed welcomed him with overwhelming comfort and without even changing into his pajamas Soul fell asleep where he laid.
