Summary: Sam and Daniel begin to wonder – just how smart is the colonel? Is Jack the genius known only as MacGyver?

Disclaimer: I do not own "Stargate SG-1" the series. I believe it is owned by MGM. No copyright infringement is intended. I do not "MacGyver" (original or remake) and am not sure who does. No disrespect is intended I am merely intrigued by the possibilities.

The Colonel?

Chapter 8

Sam hadn't liked General West – he'd excluded her from the original Stargate mission because he was a sexist asshole who believed women had no place in combat. Although he hadn't even had the balls to tell her to her face, he'd just ordered her to attend a conference on some random biology project the US Navy was conducting in Hong Kong instead. Sam fumed just thinking about it – she wasn't a biologist – she'd had no business being there – and on top of that the whole time she was in Hong Kong that one guy had followed her around like a lost puppy. Sam shook herself out of her musings in time to hear General Hammond explaining to Teal'c just who General West was.

"He is the former head of security for special projects at this base. Including the original Stargate Research Project."

"I see."

"He was transferred over to supervise the physical training programs at the Air Force Academy sometime in the year after I came back from Abydos and before Apophis came here searching for a host for his bride," Colonel O'Neill added.

"Almost immediately after the first mission in fact," General Hammond clarified, "the ink was barely dry on your team's reports before he was transferred out and I was shuffled in." General Hammond frowned as he spoke, obviously bothered by something he'd said – although Sam couldn't venture a guess as to what.

They all exchanged a little more small talk about their past dealings with General West, although both the General and the Colonel had gone mostly silent, for a few minutes – before General Hammond called their attention back to the purpose of the meeting.

The meeting was just wrapping up when heavy boots could be heard pounding up the stair case from the control room. Sergeant Harriman came into the conference room at speed – making his way directly for the television controls while speaking, "please excuse the interruption, General, but I think you'll all want to see this," as he spoke Walter Harriman pointed the remote at the wall of TVs. They all came alive with the largest center screen tuned to ZNN and the volume turned on as they heard the white-headed anchorman speak.

"Again, this breaking news story. Just moments ago, members of the FBI and DXS, that's the Department of External Services, interrupted a joint session of congress at the Capital to arrest Senator Robert Kinsey on charges of treason. That news once again: the republican chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Robert Kinsey, has just been arrested for treason. The long serving Senator from Texas was placed under arrest, read his rights, and put in handcuffs before being pulled from the Senate floor. While we do not yet have any further specifics this basic chain of events can be clearly seen in this C-SPAN footage. You can also see that the Senator has not appeared to go quietly, he was shouting, swearing, and struggling as law enforcement removed him from the U.S. Capitol Building. Again, breaking National News," Sergeant Harriman muted the TV as the anchorman began to repeat his spiel. The silence that descended was deafening – more deafening than any battle had ever been.

In the pounding silence these seven comrades in arms stared at each other, back to the muted television, and back, again, to each other. Sam felt their confusion was as profound as their silence. The obvious question hung in the air unvoiced, apprehensive of an answer: what was happening?
