"Teacher! Can you tell me more about pacts?" The ashen haired woman looked down, past the table and the great winged lizard laying its head on her lap. She felt a smile make its way up to her lips as she stared at the little purple haired girl that gripped the edge of the table just so she could look over it. She stifled a chuckle, reaching over, she lifted her up and placed her atop the table.

Her wyvern grumbled in slight annoyance when the little girl placed her feet on its head, but made no other move. It was a well disciplined beast, and an even better partner. The ashen haired woman held no regrets in binding it to her soul, and hers with it. "You want to learn more about pacts?"

Selina nodded, a twinkle in her eyes.

"Hm... well, I guess I don't mind teach you, but wouldn't you prefer practicing your geokinesis?" The girl was unnatural in that regard, she described her control over it something akin to moving an arm or leg, in other words. She considered her geokinesis a limb, and not a tool. It was another thing the Archmage explained, and got berated because of bigoted views.

"I want to learn pacts!" Her wyvern let out a low growl as Selina stomped her feet on its face over and over. Eventually, it had enough and tried to attack Selina but was stopped with a single hand from the ashen haired teacher. "Please...?"

"...Alright, the first thing you should know about pacts, my dear Moonsong..." She dusted the dirt on her wyvern's scales. "Is that you shouldn't step on their heads."

Pacts were a sort of specialty for her teacher, even though she was a Witch like her, she opted to go out of the box of sorcery and alchemy and delve into a realm unsuited for their people. Selina never really understood it though, but she grew curious after spending five years with her, but before she could really learn anything, they were attacked and separated.

A sad thing, but it was something she'd grown over.

Still, she'd like to see just why her teacher seemed to love it so much.

"Would you… would you like to form a pact with me?"

'...Is it supposed to be this embarrassing? I thought that got beaten out of me already...' Selina fidgeted under the direwolf cub's stare. Her teacher had mentioned that while subduing a monster and forcing the pact onto them was one way to get it done, the end result would be less than optimal. Since the pact was one forced on the monster, if... no, when they break out they would hold no loyalty to their former partner and kill them.

Though the chances of them breaking out in the first place was... almost non-existent, aside from a few rare occurrences, but those had several circumstances leading up to it, so they weren't a good comparison. Still, creating a pact with a strong monster was integral to being considered powerful in the magic industry. The Archmage for example, despite being a very hated individual by the researchers, is considered respectable and highly revered because of the Holy Dragon he at at his side.

Dragons on their own were already beings considered impossible to make a pact with, as not only were they sentient, they are at large prideful and wise. Even the most gentlest of dragons knew better than to make a pact with a mage. It was a widely discussed topic, but so far, nothing had been decided on as the answer.

...Going back on topic, another theory proposed by the archmage, was to ask the monster for a pact.

As one would expect, this theory would be met with harsh criticism from all sides as talking monsters were treated as Abnormal Monsters, an abomination of nature. Much like many of his other theories, that one also got scrapped as the Archmage gave up. Selina had wondered why her teacher knew so much about the Archmage.

"...What's a pact?" Monsters matured faster than humans, but in size and mentality, but even with that in mind. Tia was far too small to be anything but a few weeks old. He shouldn't be able to fight as well as he did. He shouldn't be able to speak as well as he did. The direwolf cub shouldn't be as kind to her as he was, as all monsters hated humanity, and witches were considered both monster and human.

For them, that was more than enough of a distinction to hunt her fellow witches down.

If talking monsters were abominations, then Tia was the abomination within abominations with how unnaturally... human he seemed.

From his mannerisms, to his actions, to his words and to his eyes.

Especially his eyes.

It reminded her too much of a human, rather than a direwolf.

A theory was forming in her head, but it got pushed away and thrown to the bin as she struggled to answer his question. Selina frowned as her mind came up blank whenever she thought of a word to explain it. "I-Its..."

The little girl and the cub entered an area that was starting to look for familiar to the canine. While looking for a healing herb, he followed a minty scent and came through an area filled to the brim with berries and mint flowers. While in a way it was a medicinal herb... his parents weren't sufferings bowel issues, so he ignored them. "Careful, the thorns on those berries hurts more than they should."

"R-Right..." The temperature dropped, and Selina's rags did little to protect her from the cold. Tia soon found himself being carried by her and cradled to her budding chest.

"I don't mind." He spoke up once she began fidgeting. It was like providing warmth to his siblings. It was weird that he was the only one among four to generate warmth though... anyways, he really didn't mind her carrying him. "Are you going to finish?"

She froze, but slowly picked up her pace. "A pact... is... to put things simply, a contract, of mutual benefit."

The light in Tia's amber eyes seemed to intensify as they passed through a particularly thick shade, Selina bit the inside of her cheeks to prevent herself to appearing too nervous. If she showed uncertainty, she was certain that it would ruin any chance of making the pact.

And that, she couldn't let happen.

"...Will you let me think it over?" The direwolf said, before falling in silent contemplation. Selina nodded and left him to his own devices.

Eventually she got used to the temperature and Tia left her embrace… the little witch didn't want to admit she missed his warmth.

'Pacts are something that grants mutual benefits... but what are those benefits...?' Selina should be able to explain it to him. Though the cub didn't ask.

Though... honestly speaking, Tia wouldn't be opposed to it. Pacts didn't sound like contracts of servitude at least. However, that was his human side convincing him to abandon his pack and Lynn to go with the human girl. Therefore, he hesitated and brought himself time to thoroughly think it over.

Tia Schnieden was no longer a human.

He was a Direwolf.

A Monster.

But... what was wrong with being a monster with a human heart?

Tia's brows furrowed as he fell into silent contemplation as Selina watched over him.

In the end, he decided to put it aside.

He could think about it later.

Several more hours passed by, and they were reaching an area he remembered being not too far from the den. The berries were starting to thin, something Selina and he were thankful for. At times, the little girl literally had to bury patches of berries because there was no other way around it. His ears twitched before his vision flared up with notifications.

[Warning! An Impossible Foe is approaching]

[Warning! An Impossible Foe is approaching]

[Warning!]

[Warning!]

[Warning!]

'I get it, shut up already!' As if it held a will, the notifications grew tenfold and it felt like his head was splitting in half. Thankfully, Selina also noticed something and upon noticing his struggle, grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and began running. The left the sweet berry bush area, and entered a place that was filled with far too many large rocks.

"How do you usually get rid of them?" The little girl had been on the run for more than a couple of months, it would make no sense if she had no solid method of escaping her pursuers. Not counting her geokinesis, since he can assume that they would have something to counter that in a week's time. "Selina?"

"Nothing ever works twice..." Selina thought back to the time she made a tunnel underground, they would simply sense out where the mana influxes and follow her above ground. She then thought back to the time she tried fighting back... her initial strike managed to take down two, but her teacher had to hold them back while she ran because they were way, way stronger than she thought.

Tunneling underground, fighting back, making traps for them as she ran, provoking monsters to hold them back, and finally her latest trick, the sinkhole. Each attempt gave her a couple of weeks of peace in between, but every time they caught up just as easily as well. Fortunately, they were a group while they were two, currently one, so she had an easier time moving not even mentioning her teacher's wyvern who could fly.

"Damn..." The idea of going to the den popped up, though he dismissed it. Arnou and Accala were probably still no way capable of combat. Their quest may have gotten nulled, but that was definitely not a sign that they were already healed up. He wasn't an idiot, and this wasn't a fantasy wonderland, things wouldn't be that convenient.

He wasn't even thinking of the possibility of their pursuers matching them in strength.

After all, they were just direwolves.

"I hear something!" Selina suddenly shouted, her face paling as she picked up the pace and re-entered a more forested area. Unfortunately, before they could go back to the cover of the trees, spikes of ice impaled the ground which forced them back. Slowly, they turned back and found an ivory haired woman heatedly glaring at them, her mouth having trails of frost haze.

[Goblin/? Hybrid] [Status; Mildly Exhausted, Mildly Discontent] [Neutral] [Threat Level; Impossible] [Health; Bright Yellow]

[Jack Frost/Werewolf Hybrid ] [Status; Mildly Exhausted, Mildly Bloodthirsty] [Aggressive] [Threat Level; Impossible] [Health; Bright Yellow]

[Lamia/Mermaid Hybrid] [Status; Lightly Exhausted] [Passive] [Threat Level; Impossible] [Health; Dark Green]

[Minotaur/Dwarf Hybrid] [Status; Mildly Exhausted, Mild Muscle Pain, Mild Back Pain] [Passive] [Threat Level; Impossible] [Health; Bright Green]

"...Its you guys..." Tia glanced at the little girl, and noticed her hands trembling. He could smell the scent of magic going stronger, but he wasn't sure if that was because of Selina or the new guys... specifically speaking, the jack frost/werewolf hybrid. As curious as that union one, he ended up staring at the Minotaur and wonder how that worked.

Because a Minotaur and a Dwarf?

Yeah...

'There is absolutely going to be a story there.' He was curious, but he wasn't enough of an idiot to think he would speak because he asked... still, how?

"We meet again brat!" Ivory Hair grinned wide, bloodlust leaking out from her small frame and pinning them down. Selina was used to the sensation, but Tia struggled to maintain his composure. She jumped off her direwolf and punched her fists together, her bloodlust growing in intensity. Fortunately for the cub, the goblin placed its hand on her shoulder and somehow snuffled it.

"You're scaring Lux. Stop it."

"Wait, why Lux?!"

"Trauma?"

Selina didn't waste the opening caused by the ivory haired woman's bafflement and made the earth around her swirl and surge toward the group. As they dealt with that, the little girl ran past him into the forest. He followed soon after, but spared a glance behind them to find the Minotaur/Dwarf Hybrid raising their hand, and making an green barrier in front of him.

'That is so cool.' Tia quickly caught up to the little girl by pumping up his (Sprint). Barriers were cool, especially if he could shape it like clay. If it works like he thought it would, then it would be both the strongest shield and the bluntest but strongest weapon. The cub nodded to himself as he put a personal quest for himself. 'I will get that someday.'

"Do you know this area?!" The cub shook his head. This was a new location, they were near the den but that was a stupid decision in all honesty. They would be bringing his parents certain death, or certain imprisonment. After all, only a fool would pass up on the chance to control a strong but weakened monster. Still, the cub placed a skill point into (Instinct) in hopes of a deus ex machina.

His ears twitched and howled.

Selina made her own assumption and turned around to shoot a barrage of medium sized spikes to the tree's. A white shadow dropped on the ground, the Ivory Haired woman had abandoned her mount and chased after them. She grinned wide after dodging, but gasped in surprise as the spikes impaled her right arm despite having the absolute certainty that she avoided it.

"Gah! Since when could you do that?!" Tia looked up and found the rocks curving in the air. "Annoying little pieces of shit!"

Selina didn't bother holding it for more than a second, pulsing her magic, she shot the rocks and turned on her heel to run. Tia followed after watching the jack frost dance in the middle of bona fide sandstorm. She howled and a gust of frost exploded out of her small frame. Tia took that as his signal to run the hell away less he turns into a frozen statue.

"That won't hold her long, we need a plan, quick!" Selina muttered to herself, panting heavier after her display of magic. Her brows furrowed in thought, Tia snapped her out of it with a howl, the cub noticing the fast approaching shadows slowly surrounding them. Tia could spot the large frame of the Minotaur, the slender shadow of the Lamia, and the small blur of the goblin.

"Can we go under?" Tia asked.

"It would be hard to move around the roots." Going over also wasn't an option then, since the jack frost had already shown herself capable of traversing it with relative ease. The cub let out a frustrated sigh, nothing was going their way... speaking of, rarely anything does for him. Still, Selina wasn't willing to give up and neither was he.

He noticed the three shadows shoot past them.

"They're going to do an ambush." Tia pointed out, Selina nodded in silence as her brows furrowed further. She opened her mouth to speak up, but gasped when someone grabbed the back of her head and smashed it on the ground. The cub snarled at the ivory haired woman as she lifted the little girl's face, revealing that she had broken her nose.

"Heya!" Her cheerful smile was offset by the vast amount of puncture wounds on her body. Though, only one was deep and the others were only surface levels. Her eyes were twitching, and she sneered at the girl. "Miss me, bitch?"

'Weak… so weak! Why did we have so much trouble… no, now that I get a closer look, it looks like she just recovered a quarter of her reserves.' Diana clicked her tongue in disappointment. She remembered going against the Little Witch's geomancy before, it didn't make sense for someone so young to be so strong. Then again, magic itself was ridiculous, as it can grant immortality to those immortals… detestable bastards aside. 'She should be stronger than this…'

Jack Frosts, even half breeds like her, have a core in their body. As long as that wasn't destroyed, she could recover from practically anything. The perk of being part spirit, she supposed. So she wasn't too concerned about the puncture wounds since none of them came close to hitting her core. Diana threw Selina and cackled as her body bended around a tree.

"Rrrrrr!" And then there was this.

The Jack Frost hybrid reached over to her neck at the tiny direwolf cub gnawing on her, its tiny fangs focusing on the open wounds, knowing it couldn't go past her skin. 'So much power in such a little body… this brat's the same as the Little Witch.'

Interesting… how interesting…!

Diana grinned widely as she held up to her face. "Hey…"

Her eyes twitched to the side, and the jack frost flipped and held out her arm under her, blanketing the ground in snow and frost. It completely froze the snake made of rocks the Little Witch created. She reached the apex of her jump and began falling, Diana clenched her fist, flicking her feet and shattering it in one go.

"...You got stronger," The Little Witch scowled, her cute face scrunching as she cradled her broken nose. She held out her good arm and made two more rock snakes, "...Let him go."

"Oh…? Oh, oh, oh, oh!" The ivory haired woman felt a grin crawl up her face. She began chuckling, before coming into a full blown laughter. The jack frost doubled over, feeling her sides hurt from laughter. "The Little Witch caring enough for something to make a demand? Now this is interesting, where did the girl that only cared for her own survival go?"

Selina tightened her lips, her eyes never leaving the struggling direwolf cub's form. Those same lime green widened in fear when Diana began excluding a frosty haze. She took a step forward and made the earth surge around them, but froze when the cub began hacking for breath.

"You care for this cub, don't you…?" Diana dangled the struggling canine, bringing it close to her face and grinned. The ivory haired woman found this situation fun, it wasn't often she could see the Little Witch make a face so full of desperation. The brat had caused their group grief many times, most of those times were because her retaliations resulted in the death of friends. 'Maybe I should give her a taste of what that feels like?!'

All it would take was a little more force in her grip, and crack! Just like that, the abnormally powerful direwolf cub would be no more. Diana was interested in taking it as her own, but she knew better. Their group treated direwolves as pack mules, horses, and target dummies. It wouldn't last the trip back unless she sold her body for favors, and even then she wasn't sure she could keep it alive. At the end of the day, it wasn't worth the effort.

'A shame, its the first thing I found cute in forever.' The world was hideous, the jack frost hybrid could say this without any doubt.

The Little Witch put her head down and muttered something in a voice so quiet, even her werewolf influenced hearing couldn't pick it up. An impressive feat, but something she did not appreciate in the slightest.

"Let… go…!"

"Hm? Did you say something?" Diana walked up, confident that she had far too little mana to make up something that can kill her in one shot. "Speak up brat!"

"I said…" An orange hue began forming around her body, despite there being no wind, her purple hair began to sway and the covering her modesty began to rip into tatters. Diana… felt like she had made a mistake, coming this close. The direwolf in her hand went still, passing out from the pressure emanating from the little girl.

'What the hell? Did she just bullshit being low on mana?!' Sweat began forming around her brow as Diana's lips twitched upwards, and despite the pressure pressing down on her, she was starting to get excited. Her werewolf blood demanded a good fight, and she was all but eager to deliver.

Her ears twitched, registering the sound of glass shattering, but where?

Selina raised her head, lime green eyes glowing under the shadows, and purple bleeding into orange.

"Let him go!"

Reality seemed to shatter as an older woman overlapped over the little girl's body.

Green shards gathered around the girl and enveloped the stone in her hand, shattering it and taking in the broken pieces. The fragments moved like a viper, and struck as one. It entered the unconscious cub's body and made its veins glow a mix of purple, orange, and silver.

Diana tried to move it away, but she was forced to let go of the canine as the earth around her surged like a turbulent wave and knocked her over.

Witches were creatures considered both human and monster, an existence that belonged in neither faction, as they posses the power of monster but the heart and potential of humans. A mature woman felt a smile crawl onto her lips as she overlooked the battle happening under the cliff she was sitting on the edge of. Call it a whim of a senior, but her heart bled for the girl.

'A little help shouldn't violate the rules.'

She lowered her arm, which was enshrouded in a fog of purple mist.

'Still... she's quite young to already be at the end of her pilgrimage... and that cub...'

Baby monsters were hard to create a pact with, as not only does one need to get past their parents, they would also need to get past the unnaturally strong magic resistance every living being was granted at their birth. Still, the effort was worth it. Pacts helps a monster and their witch get stronger, the longer they resonate, the stronger they become.

An adult monster might be strong at the start, but the sheer potential of starting young couldn't just be brushed to the side.

The Ashen Haired Witch and her young Wyvern were a good example of this.

...A little more help wouldn't be pushing things too far right? The mature woman played with her hair, which held the same color as the little girl, and smiled.

'Another way to establish a pact... is to have someone else make it for you.'

The cub was cute, she wouldn't mind making it her own once it and the girl grew up.

The mature woman licked her lips at the thought.

She did it.

She did it!

"What… did you do?!" The ivory haired woman raged, snowflakes began forming around her as the jack frost released her own energy to mitigate the pressure from Selina's mysterious power-up. Not that the little witch really understood the specifics of that, it was the first time she ever managed to exert pressure through releasing her magic after all.

Perhaps it was because of the Willow Forest's influence?

Or perhaps...

'Teacher would know, I'll ask her when I find her.' Selina thought to herself as the little girl grabbed the unconscious cub and cradled him near to her chest. She noted the almost unnoticeable silver energy coursing around his veins. The barest tint of orange was proof that the pact was successful, and it was making adjustments to his body and soul to make it bind to her own.

The process should last just a few minutes.

Her brows furrowed as she spotted a single spec of purple.

Selina didn't get a chance to think about it.

"I said, what did you do?!" The jack frost repeated, a torrent of snow spontaneously appearing from behind her. Selina took a few steps back, swiping her hand to move the earth and matched it. "Witch!"

"I don't know." It was the truth. Selina did not know where the boost in power came from. Her geokinesis was strong, stronger because of her unnaturally large reserves and talent, but she digressed. It shouldn't matter, since one couldn't just bring out something one doesn't have, magic was no exception to this despite how incomprehensible its true nature is…

Regardless, she counted its blessing and created a large spike that shot towards the ivory haired jack frost at the speed of sound. It grew larger as it tore through the ground, taking the broken pieces into itself and skewering through a wall of pure ice that was formed as a reaction, and tore off the Jack Frost's good arm as she desperately dodged.

"Dammit!" Selina didn't waste time and made a tidal wave of mud, she cut off her control and let it fall over the woman as she ran away, Tia clutched to her chest. "Moonsong!"

'My head hurts…' She could feel the mysterious boost in power disappear. 'What do I do… it won't take her long to get out of there… and there were three more too.'

The situation was bad, but still, the little girl had gotten worse before. She can get out of this as well.

'My head hurts…' The sudden influx of information the moment he woke up gave him a massive headache as his brains struggled to cope. It wasn't as bad as the times he had to upgrade (Observe) but it was pretty damn close. It took a few minutes for everything to settle down.

"You woke up…!" Selina, so she survived. Tia let out a quiet breath, that was a relief, he was worried that when he got knocked out she would have been taken away when he woke up. "Are… are you okay?"

"...A bit dizzy, but I'm fine." He would need to think about the pact she forced on him, but that can be put aside for later. From the fact she was running, they still weren't in the clear from the knights hunting them down. Furthermore… he had absolutely no idea where they were.

"Where do we go now…?" Tia remained silent and frowned. There really was nothing they could do but run, and judging by how utterly exhausted Selina looked, it would just be a matter of time until she collapsed. After that, it wouldn't even take the ivory haired woman a minute to catch up and take her away. "She'll catch up... I don't know if I can run away again. She won't hold back now."

'I'm thinking, I'm thinking…' His eyes roamed towards beyond the trees, narrowing whenever he thought of an option but frowned when he shot it down with cold hard logic. Too taxing, take too much time, take too much effort, physically impossible. Spot after spot, Tio scowled as every option either slowed them too much, or were simply impossible for Selina's current state… but there was one spot that made him think survival was possible.

"Go east!" Tia barked, drawing Selina's attention, who then nodded and bolted to the directed direction. Eventually, the came upon another hole on the ground, but unlike Selina's sinkhole that just went straight down, this one led to a gradual descent as dirt shifted to stone and gravel.

It was a cave entrance, a perfect spot to hide in when one of them can do geokinesis. In addition, he could smell the foul stench of those purple crystals, which would mean their scent would be masked as well. It was a perfect spot to hide in, but…

'I don't need to be in there to know that something dangerous lives inside.' Call it an animal's instinct, but his entire body was trembling just by being near it. It was something he took into account, but also something he chose to ignore. They simply didn't have enough time to do anything else.

Why? Because the jack frost had caught up.

"Selina Moonsong!" The absolute rage in her tone was palpable, Tia could feel Selina tremble because of it, but her eyes showed resolution. She was determined to survive. The little girl ran into the cave, determination plastered on her face. Still, she took a risk and stopped at the entrance, turning around to watch the ivory haired woman desperately catch up.

Selina smirked, a vindictive glint in her eyes.

"0... and 1... I win."

She snapped her nose back into place as the woman bellowed her rage.
